Did you know....

by Dianne_in_Denver

My granddaughter had a very interesting project for school. She was to take on the role of someone famous from our state and explain all about them. I thought it would be fun for everyone to tell a little about someone famous from your state. I will start by "borrowing" my granddaughter's character:

Ruth Handler: Ruth is the inventor of the Barbie and Ken doll. She and her husband and another man also founded Mattel. She named the dolls after her two children (which they didn't like at all). She and her husband made millions of dollars over the years. There is a twist to this story, which I was very surprised to hear. Around 1972, Mrs. Handler lied to the stockholders about the value of the stock. She was tried and convicted of fraud and was sentenced to 41 years in prison. Although she never went to prison, she did end up paying fines, serving 500 hours of community service and was on probation for 5 years. She soon resigned from the company she founded.

Ok...bet you all didn't know about that and probably didn't care...but who is someone famous from your state?

Here's mine:

Mark Hofmann is an American counterfeiter, forger, and murderer. Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished forgers in history, Hoffmann is especially noted for his creation of documents related to the history of the Latter Day Saint movement. The book, The Mormon Murders, talks about how Mark Hofmann forged 48 documents regarding the early Mormon church. They were purchased and suppressed by the church because they would have cast doubts on the basic beliefs of the church and its origins. When Hofmann's schemes began to unravel, he constructed bombs to murder two people in Salt Lake City, Utah. As of 2009, he is serving a life sentence at the Utah State Prison in Draper.......right down the road from my house!!!

Tina damn you are faster than the road runner! Congrats on first.

Huh Barbies Mom is a convicted Felon, Who Knew??? You learn something new every day. Great report by the granddaughter.

Someone famous from our state. Well three jump to mind, Bill Gates which I think we all know his story. Kurt Cobain who by the way was raised in the same town I grew up in Aberdeen WA and again we all know that ending.

The last one is the Green River killer, Gary Leon Ridgway (born February 18, 1949), known as the Green River Killer, is an American serial killer. Ridgway murdered numerous women in Washington during the 1980s and 1990s. He strangled them with rope, fishing line and anything else he could find. He also engaged in forms of torture, rape, and necrophilia.

On November 30, 2001, as he was leaving a Renton, Washington factory where he worked, he was arrested for the murders of four women whose cases were linked to him through DNA evidence. In November of 2003 he pleaded guilty to 48 counts of aggravated murder, although he says he actually killed 90 women or more, almost all prostitutes. The murders occurred in the early 1980s. As part of a plea bargain, he was spared the death penalty and received a sentence of life imprisonment without parole.

That man terroized the women in and people of our state for so many years. Still can't drive by the Green River and think about how it has been tainted and what a sad place.

Good Morning!

DIANNE: I wish I could have seen your granddaughter's presentation..it had to be so cute.

I have always been fascinated by Winnie Ruth Judd. In 1931 she was tried and convicted of murdering one of her friends and stuffing her into a trunk. She then shipped the trunk from Phx to L.A. There were actually two trunks..the second one contained another one of her friends who had also been murdered and dismembered. It was this trunk that was initially investigated when someone noticed it was dripping blood. Miss Judd was not convicted of the second friend's death though. Rumors were that she killed her friends because they were all interested in the same man.

Winnie Ruth Judd was sentenced to be hanged but was sent to the state mental hospital when the death sentence was repealed. She escaped numerous times from the hospital and sometimes was free for years before being sent back. She was released for good in 1971 and lived to be 93 years old. She died in 1998.

I remember as a kid hearing about this story and being afraid that Winnie was gonna come and get me! Oh..the irrational fears of an innocent 8 year old!

Loved the blog today DIANNE, can't wait to read everyone's stories!

Congrats on FIRST today TINA! Sheesh..Mark Hofmann's story sounds like part of the plot of Big Love!

LYNND: That green River killer case was so creepy. Didn't someone mention the guy that was convicted as a suspect years before he was actually investigated? So sad..

Dianne...Cool topic! We have a lot of historical figures from my state, Paul Revere anyone? So I narrowed it down to my city...The most famous one is Dr. Seuss, but we have Milton Bradley, Kurt Russell, Nina Blackwood, (original MTV VJ) Taj Mahal, James Naismith, (inventor of Basketball)Dr John H. Breck Sr, (founder of Breck Shampoo), Indian Motorcycles, Timothy Leary, Author Robert Parker, The band Staind and a couple of Olympic Medal winners. What's really odd is I was reading this stuff last night....(cue theme from The Twilight Zone)

Morning Zona, Bonacci and Scrishy!

Zona he was a suspect in the case early on but they could not find enough evidence to push forward an arrest and conviction.

He was another one that people said was a quite neighbor and great co worker. Did his job and kept his head down.

I tell you I look at all of my really quite neighbors differently now! LOL

Dianne: I've been wracking my brain to think of a notorious Californian who people haven't already heard of... and I'm drawing a blank! Notorious people from California always seem to get famous!

As far as scandals go, the state has Lizzie Bordon, The Salem Witch Trials, and The Boston Strangler, to name a few.

A more recent controversy involved the British nanny Louise Woodward, who was accused of murdering eight-month-old Matthew Eappen while he was in her care. As part of the defence strategy, Woodward's attorneys requested that the jury not be given the option of convicting her of manslaughter and instead either convict her of murder or find her not guilty.

The prosecution presented eight physicians involved in Matthew Eappen's care, including a neurosurgeon, an ophthalmologist, a radiologist, two pathologists and an expert in child abuse, who testified to their belief that his injuries had occurred as a result of violent shaking and from his head impacting with a hard surface. The defense challenged this, among other things, on the grounds that there were no neck injuries to Matthew Eappen—injuries that would have been expected if he had been violently shaken. The prosecution had also claimed initially that Matthew Eappen's impact injuries were the equivalent of having been thrown from a two-story building, but they equivocated over this claim as the trial progressed. The defense presented expert medical testimony that the infant's injury may have occurred three weeks before the date of death, implying that the parents, Sunil and Deborah Eappen, were as fully implicated by circumstances as Woodward. There were old wrist injuries to the infant that may have been incurred before Woodward even arrived at the house. Woodward, however, admitted under cross-examination that she never noticed any slight bumps, marks or any unusual behavior by the baby at any time prior to the night he was taken to hospital.

After 26 hours of deliberations, the jury found her guilty of second-degree murder as they were not permitted the finding of involuntary manslaughter. She faced a sentence of a minimum of 15 years to life in prison.

However, at a post-conviction hearing, Judge Hiller B. Zobel reduced the conviction to involuntary manslaughter, stating that "the circumstances in which the defendant acted were characterized by confusion, inexperience, frustration, immaturity and some anger, but not malice in the legal sense supporting a conviction for second-degree murder," adding: "I am morally certain that allowing this defendant on this evidence to remain convicted of second-degree murder would be a miscarriage of justice"

Woodward's sentence was reduced to time served (279 days) and she was freed. She then returned to Briton.

Before the trial, Woodward had decided to undergo a polygraph examination. During the exam Woodward was asked questions about whether she caused injury to Matthew Eappen while he was in her care. Woodward denied having caused any injuries to Matthew. The polygraph administrator concluded that her answers to these questions were truthful to a confidence level of 95 percent. The results were then evaluated another polygrapher hired by Woodward's defense lawyers, who also claimed that Woodward had answered truthfully. However, the polygraph was deemed inadmissible in court.

In 2007, Dr Patrick Barnes, the prosecution's star medical witness, reversed his opinion: he concluded that death could have been caused by an old injury, as argued by the defense. In a scientific paper he states: "The science we have today could, in fact, have exonerated Louise. There is certainly, in retrospect, reasonable doubt."

Then there was Charles Stuart who was the man responsible for re-igniting racial tensions in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood by claiming a Black gunman forced his way into his vehicle, shot his pregnant wife in the head, then shot him in the stomach before robbing them and leaving them for dead. Charles later committed suicide after his brother implicated him in the murder. A gun that matched the bullet that was removed from Charles stomach was later found in a river close to Boston. The brother later identified the gun as the same one he threw over a bridge along with Mrs. Stuart's purse and jewelry.

Ok...I'm done...I promise!

Good morning Tina, Scirish, Lynn D, Zona, Bonacci and Whabbear!

Very interesting blog Dianne. I don't have a state, just a province, so can I still participate? I'll take that as a yes. Here are some famous people who lived in Nova Scotia.

Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone and phonograph.

Oswald Theodore Avery, was the first scientist to explain the purpose of DNA. He moved to New York City with his family at the age of 10. His discovery was at first controversial when he published it in 1944. He worked at New York's Rockefeller Institude.

Caroll Baker,is a famous country signer who has won both female and country female vocalist of the year honours.

Sidney Crosby, from Cole Harbour, just lead the Philadephia Flyers to win the Stanley Cup.

Anne Murray, from Springhill,is well known for her musical success around the world.

Robert Perry, from Sydney, discovered the North Pole.

Hank Snow, from Liverpool, was one of country music's first true superstars. It has been written that he was the man who discovered Elvis Presley, when Elvis was a young singer.

Shirley Hartman, Shelburne, is the most famous Nova Scotian of all time for her discovery of ...well a girl can't tell all her secrets! LOL!!

Have a good day!

Bush in December 2002.
She died in an apparent suicide 9 months later. Gunshot to the head. And this matter remains unsettled.

I'm not saying Bush or the FBI or CIA had anything to do with it but google her if you love a good murder mystery.....excuse me...suicide mystery.... let's just say government agents have made murders look like suicides before.....

Dianne Very thought provoking blog. So many famous people have come from California but I settled on this one because of her influence on American culture.

Carol Doda was a stripper in San Francisco, California in the 1960s. In 1964 Doda, still in her teens, made international news when a gynecologist injected silicone into her size-34 breasts, adding 10 inches to what would become known as Doda's "twin 44s" and "the new Twin Peaks of San Francisco". Doda's enhancements were direct silicone injections rather than filled prothesis, a procedure not practiced today due to concerns about silicone migration within the body. She had 44 injections, a large dose of silicone.

Carol Doda worked as a topless waitress at the Condor Night Club in the North Beach section of San Francisco. The large lit sign in front of the club featured a cartoon of her. Her premiere topless dance came on the night of June 19, 1964. Doda's act began with a grand piano lowered from the ceiling by hydraulic motors; Doda would be atop the piano dancing. She go-go danced the Swim to a rock and roll combo headed by Bobby Freeman as her piano settled on the stage. She also did the Twist, the Frug, and the Watusi. Doda performed 12 shows nightly so that management could keep crowds moving in and out. She was 19 or 20 when she first danced at the Condor. Two months after she started the rest of San Francisco's Broadway was topless, followed soon after by the rest of America.

I was with Whab on drawing a blank for CA. Most of us are either imports or nut cases. But....

Jeff Buckley was born in CA. He sang a most beautiful rendition of the song Hallelujah, and had unlimited potential. He drowned in 1997, in his early 30's. Unlike fellow drowned singer Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, Jeff Buckley had neither drugs nor alcohol in his system.

I received repeated calls this morning from an unknown gentleman. I answered and he asked me if I was Terry. I said no. Then he wanted to know what I was doing in his house, answering his phone. I told him I thought he'd misdialed and should try again.

He called back. Furious with me for answering his phone. I was able to learn he was in a hospital and the nurses hadn't given him his drugs.

He still didn't believe I wasn't in his house on the third call. I called the local hospital to ask them to track this guy down and give him drugs so he'd stop bothering me.

I assume the matter got sorted out because I've not gotten any more calls.

Hey hooters!

Fun blog Dianne! I was trying to think of someone and then remembered the Mitchell Brothers.

The Mitchell brothers (James "Jim" Lloyd Mitchell and Artie Jay Mitchell) were pioneers in the pornography and striptease club business in San Francisco and other parts of California from 1969until 1991, when Jim was convicted of killing Artie.

Jim, a part-time filmmaking student at San Francisco State University in the mid-1960s, aspired to become an "important" director like Francis Ford Coppola and Roman Polanski and headed a clique of classmates with similar ambitions. While in school, he worked at the Follies, a cinema showing "nudies" (brief, plotless films featuring naked performers), and observed that each night the theater was filled with "horn dick daddies" (masturbators) who arrived simply for the onscreen nudity; he therefore perceived pornography as a potentially lucrative career opportunity for himself and Artie, who had just been discharged from the Army.

They opened the O'Farrell Theatre in 1969 as an adult cinema and at one time operated 11 such businesses; in addition, they produced and directed many adult films, including Behind the Green Door in 1972.

MR. EBJ is/was their 1st cousin. His dad and their mom were brother and sister.

Just watched part of the Michael Jackson memorial.

I did lots of errands this morning, hair cut, eye exam appt, etc.

Hope everyone is having a nice day so far!

I loved his music in fact I still have his albums.

However, there are just too many red flags waving around to make this such a media wide attention. I just don't understand it.

EBJ I was thinking about the Mitchell Bros., too. LOL

iteach I guess it's just because he was such a big deal, world-wide for so many decades. I for one, don't believe he ever did anything innappropriate with anyone, let alone a child. I don't think it was in him to do such a thing. I do think that his life since childhood was so cut off from any kind of normalcy that he didn't understand how our culture would view certain behaviors. I think he was an extremely talented but sad figure. IMHO

VERY interesting nest today, Dianne!

iteach: I've always thought that one of the primary victims of the Michael Jackson story was the truth. No wonder it's stirred you up so much. I can't believe the horror of actually being sexually abused by someone larger and more powerful than myself. Bonacci is so right... stand proud at being a survivor!

EBJ and J/L: By mentioning the Cohn bros and Carol Doda, you've jogged my memory!

The Emperor Norton! Of course!

He was a wildly eccentric San Francisco in the Gold Rush era who self-proclaimed himself "Emperor" of San Francisco and even printed up his own money!

And there's a modern-day twist to the story. Legendary gay rights pioneer Jose Serria, who ran one of the original gay bars in San Francisco in the mid-60's, also founded the Imperial Court system. This is an organization of drag queens, with chapters in most big US and Canadian cities, each of which elects an "Emperor" and "Empress" every year, along with assorted Dukes, Duchesses, and what-have-you. The whole thing is essentially an organization to raise money for charity.

Jose Serria may have the most eccentric title of all: The Widow Norton! Yes, for decades he's designated himself the official widow of the original Emperor Norton. Every March, the Imperial Court of San Francisco (plus anybody else who wants to drag (oops, I meant tag) along, piles into a bus in San Francisco's Castro district. Their destination is the actual grave of the original Emperor Norton, where they perform a little ceremony at the grave site in honor of Serria, Norton's ever-faithful grieving widow.

Of course, from what I gather (I've never actually participated), everybody is drunk by the time they get off the bus. These ARE drag queens, after all!

Only in California? You bet! LOL!

Hello .... You owls have been extra great today on my blog. I am always a little gun-shy about writing a blog but thought this might be a fun one today.

Thank you so much for all the input on people from your area. It has been so much fun reading all of them and I am only up to 84 on my reading. I guess we all are just a small bit smarter tonight as we have learned so much about people from our states.

On my granddaughters assignment she had to dress the part and her speech covered three written pages and to not only present it to the class but with the other children as a wax museum. It was a wonderful assignment given by the teacher and the kids (4th grade) were so darn cute...Molly Brown, Alfred Packer, Buffalo Bill, etc. I think every parent knew and will remember their children's speech forever... I know I will as a grandparent with all the practicing.

Anyway, again thanks to all of you.l

Fun new topic, Dianne! Let's see, a few of the famous/infamous folks from Oregon (some born elsewhere) include:
*James Beard, food expert/writer
* Beverly Cleary, author of Ramona Quimby books
*Tanya Harding, redneck skater
*Herbert Hoover, U.S. President
*Chief Joseph
* Ann Curry, Television Journalist (TODAY Show)
*Phil Knight, Nike founder
*Matt Groening, Creator of The Simpsons

A couple of my favorites are:

Bill Bowerman, U of O Coach and Innovator, who pretty much invented running shoes by ruining Mrs. Bowerman's waffle iron, pouring urathane onto it to create the first waffle-soles, and~

Ken Kesey, author of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'...(this from Wiki) When the publication of his second novel, 'Sometimes a Great Notion' in 1964 required his presence in New York, Kesey, Neal Cassady, and others in a group of friends they called the "Merry Pranksters" took a cross-country trip in a school bus nicknamed "Furthur." This trip, described in Tom Wolfe's 'The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test' (and later in Kesey's own screenplay "The Further Inquiry") was the group's attempt to create art out of everyday life. In New York, Cassady introduced Kesey to Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, who in turn introduced them to Timothy Leary. 'Sometimes a Great Notion' was made into a 1971 film starring Paul Newman; it was nominated for two Academy Awards, and in 1972 was the first film shown by the new television network HBO.
