Our Money Pit

by Caryn

We've been here about 2 months and are finally getting things in place to do the badly needed repair and maintenance work on our “new” 84 year old house. Next month someone is coming to install piers and replace old beams under the house so I won't be sitting sideways while I type on the computer and we won’t have to crawl uphill to get off the sofa anymore.

Much of the electrical wiring needs to be upgraded and we need to consolidate three breaker boxes (two are piggy-backed off of the main one) and get the house properly grounded. It's a wonder my mother-in-law never had a fire in here! In her bedroom she had 3 very old extension cords daisy-chained from one side of the room to the other so she could have a lamp next to her bed. The dishwasher had an old lamp cord wired to it with a hole cut on top of the counter so it could be plugged into the wall outlet. We didn't see that until we moved the microwave that her boys bought her back in the day when microwaves were first sold for personal use. There is no main cutoff for the electricity - yikes! Shortly after we arrived, there was a thunderstorm and I watched the lights on the ceiling fan glow with each lightning strike ... and the ceiling fan was turned off! And there's a breaker that bounces when we use our microwave and won't completely trip, which is disturbing.

The doors don’t close properly and windows have terrible wood rot. There are cracks all over the house that are an open invitation to creepy crawly things from outside, and Oklahoma has a LOT of creepy crawly things!

We had to wait to start this work because we didn't want to put a lot money into the house before we got a clear deed, although we did get the kitchen outlets replaced and the dishwasher wired properly. Soon, the real work can begin. Correcting the foundation problems, bringing the electrical system up to code, replacing the heating and window a/c units with a geothermal system, putting in ductwork for that, insulating, installing thermal doors and windows, repairing the driveway that looks like a jackhammer has been taken to it … these are all on the “to do” list before winter hits.

We have to let the professionals take care of these things before we can start on the do-it-yourself cosmetic projects. The fun stuff will probably have to wait until next spring. We don’t know the condition of the drywall because the entire house has wood paneling, with the exception of the kitchen and two bathrooms. So we may be replacing drywall as well. There are lovely hardwood floors under the very old gold carpeting in the front of the house that I’m looking forward to refinishing.

My mother-in-law was widowed when my husband was just an infant and she bought this house with insurance proceeds. She eventually put herself through beauty school and built a beauty shop onto the house so she could be home with her three young sons while still being able to support herself. In one of the bedrooms you can still see the pipes where the shampoo bowls once stood. The front porch is enclosed and was once the space where clients sat under the old chair dryers.

There are lot of inconveniences we’re living with and will continue living with for awhile. It will cost a bit to get things in order, but this is our home. It’s the first place my husband and I have owned since we got married 11 years ago. It’s the place where my husband grew up…so many memories in these walls. From the first time my husband brought me here, I felt there was something special about this house. Now it’s a place our children and grandchildren can come to make more memories. Back in California we rented one of those fairly new “McMansion” type homes for the last 4 years and in spite of all the upgrades and bells and whistles it had, I never felt as happy as I do in this moment. This place reminds me of my grandparents’ home in New Jersey. Theirs was a 3-story place with my grandfather’s general store in front. When we visited, I would wake up in the middle of the night and go down to the store to sneak a gumball (probably why I have bad teeth). I still have one of the ice cream scoops he used back in the day when he made 10-cent cones for the neighborhood kids. The place has since been sold and turned into a seafood restaurant. I drive by when we’re in Cape May and I’m immediately transformed into the little girl in pigtails and sandals, with all the smells of the shop and of Nanny’s home cooking so deep in my senses, it’s as if I’m there again.

I sit in my office chair, straining to keep it from turning into the downhill slope in the floor and I breathe a sigh of contentment. For me, it’s not about how shiny or new or pretty it is. It’s about where the love is, and our love is here. My husband has a great job that he can see himself at for the next 20 years. We are closer to our children and our grandson. With luck, more grandchildren will be enjoying these walls as the years pass.

And we are finally home.

Caryn what a great blog! I think you described what I have been feeling about every house we have lived in. Yes even this house. For some reason it just does not feel like my home. Even though we own it for some reason I feel like it is a rest stop for the real thing. I don't know what the real thing is but I know and sense it is out there somewhere.

I agree it does not have to have shiney bells and whistles it just has to feel like it welcomes me and it is where I belong.

I just hope that my house waiting for me does not have to be upgraded from 1907 like yours! LOL

I am so happy for you and hubby! Now be damn careful when you plug in your blow dryer and curling iron. Okay?

Waving at MEK!

Loved your blog today.. Surly lots of works needs to be done.. but with time it shall. It interested me so, that your MIL set up her beauty shop right in her home, so she can take care of her kids, and still bring home a income. I am sure those walls of yours are talking up a storm. How fun would it have been to see all those ladies back than getting their hair done and chatting away..

Cape May is about 3hrs south of where I live.. It surly is beautiful. I never stayed in Cape May, I have stayed in Wildwood on summer vacations which is the next town over and would visit Cape May for the day.. You juggled a memory, love gumballs.. :O)

Thank you so for writing it and sharing with us all.. Hey, this is your first blog??? Congrats..

Aww shucks guys *blushing*

This started out as a comment but got so long that I decided to write it as a blog for myspace. Then I decided to send it to Carol in case she needed a filler.

As life often does, things turn around in a heartbeat. Last night my stepdaughter and grandson showed up on our doorstep. She was living with a controlling boyfriend and needed to get out of there but has no savings and no place to go until she can afford a deposit on a place of her own. So they will be here for about 6 weeks.

At least she wasn't asking for money, as all of ours is earmarked for home improvements. And I enjoy having my grandson around.

This weekend my yummy hubby and I are going down to Dallas. My darling DIL and I are planning to attend an open casting call for the Biggest Loser ... please keep us in your thoughts as we sit out in the heat with hundreds of other people who need to lose 100+ pounds.

Waving a wing @ Lynn, MEK, & Zona and all who come in after me! Right now my grandson is sleeping so I have a few moments and I hope to get back here again later today. Have a great day everyone!

Carol! Hello there! You snuck in while I was commenting. If I call this my first blog, does that mean I'm on the hook for more?

I'm not much of a writer most of the time but when I feel something deeply, I'm inspired to journal about it.

Oh yes, you certainly are on the hook.. and be careful.. cause when I am in need of blogs.. I will stalk ya! ;o)

My MIL is an amazing lady. She's so happy in her new little apartment and feeling much better now that she isn't overwhelmed with all the work that needed to be done around here.

I've left most of the things in place that she still has here because she comes by every so often and goes "shopping". She walks through the house, sees something and asks, "is this mine or yours?" When I tell her it's hers, she gets a grocery bag and starts filling. It's really kind of fun.

Now the place has her stuff, our stuff, and we'll move my stepdaughter's and grandson's stuff here shortly. We may be crowded but it's a good excuse for not having a tidy house, lol!

It seems I missed a couple of days blogs.. (I think anyway)

So...

J/L.. When I read your blog the last line stuck out the most, it is so very true, and I believe for me, its the inner scars that hurt me the most, the outer ones, well are just there. They do tell a story, but I feel there are out and visible. Where the inner scars are what haunts me, I have let some out with my writings, I have lots more, when the words come, I will write....

Thanks for writing your blog and sending it off to me..

Tina... That lady sounded so sweet, I love listening to ppl's stories, so interesting.. Very glad she was able to take her hubby on that long awaiting meeting. This story kinda reminded me of the "bucket list", I am sure Mek knows about the "bucket list"

DeeDee.. Your blog the other day was your first as well.. So Congrats..

Good Morning Hooters!

Congrats on 1st Lynn.

Great Blog Caryn. What struck me the most was the wonderful daughter in law you are. You shared your feelings and love and it was really touching. I am a bit of the old (me) meets new (house) kind of person. I prefer to not have saggy floors or bad electric- BUT I see the pleasure that home is giving you and will for years to come!

Had a great vacation- will post pics soon.

Have one of Miss Hailie and myself for you too. Her mom has asked me for names and addresses of my friends who made donations to the benefit fund. The bank did not provide that to them, only the amount raised- over $8000!!! She would like to send thank you notes and I said I would give her them only if you give me permission.

So- if you would like a TY from them, please let me know (send me an email or on myspace).

I have a ton of catching up to do at work (ugh)... will be back later!!

Thank you EBJ, Goldie, Tina, Iteach ... like I said, words from the heart.

I love the QOTD and those teaching moments!

BL scares me ... I'm scared of having to work out for hours every day, scared of throwing up every couple of minutes until my body gets used to those intense workouts, scared of failing and having Bob or Jillian yell at me. I'm scared of what kind of temptations will be presented and scared of doing the ugly cry in front of all of America every week.

But for some odd reason, I feel up to the challenge. If we aren't lucky enough to stand out when the casting directors interview us, I think my DIL and I will be doing our own version of BL. But dang, if I won even one of the smaller cash prizes, that would go a long way toward fixing up the house (and I'd be in better shape for the DIY projects)!

G'Morning all!

Caryn, I've read the last paragraphs four times now, and love them more with each reading. I can just 'see' the house 'as is' in a treasured series of watercolors.

I currently live in the home we built when I was in high school, but would give anything to live in the house where I grew up, next to the general store where mom worked and the sawmill-town's office where dad kept the company books/payroll, and every neighbor family's home was also 'home'. Sadly, other than a wonderful book of history and photos, there's no trace remaining that the once thriving village ever existed. It is now mere flattened riverbank embroiled in years of costly and ongoing natural gas pipeline litigation. Sad,sad.

Good Morning all Owls

Congrats on being first Lynn

Caryn - I loved your blog and I agree completely. We live in a 55 year old family home and I love it even if it gets tiresome doing repairs. When we were first married we lived in a house that was just built. It was a lovely home but 18 years later when we moved into my Inlaws house I loved the idiosyncrasies we found here. There were root cellars and wine cellars and other mysterious cupboards. It was great fun. Yes, it keeps on begging for more repairs, (it never stops) but it is worth it. As Dorothy said, "There is no place like home".

Caryn, I loved your blog! You drew a perfect picture for us. I had to laugh when you mentioned the slanted floor. It reminded me of our old VFW building. You had to hang on to your beer bottle/glass or it would slide right off the table!

I drive by our old home a couple times a year. I want to go in so bad, but I know they have remodeled and it just wouldn't be the same. I want to keep those memories intact. I did notice they cut down the huge Maple tree I used to play under. That was sad to see, but I knew how much damage the roots caused the drains!

Caryn I loved your blog today, too! Your home has so many memories and such character! I am envious! My home is fully paid for so I am certainly lucky in that regard. However, I have never felt really at home here. This was my first husband's house so there are some really bad memories here for me. There are good ones, too, from raising my two kids and they don't remember their dad so this house has sentimental value to them. I feel like I'm just passing through, though, and I have no idea where I'm supposed to be going. Don't get me wrong, I am very thankful to have this house, it's just that I still haven't found my home.

A couple of them are near your mom.

Whabby - If it's any consolation, we DEFINITELY miss the cool weather in the bay area. It is soooo hot here I swear I melt every time I open the door.

Mary - I just finished some applesauce and thought of you.

I promised Austin I'd take him out to play in the pool we set up in the back yard if it ever cools down. I fear the water may be hot enough cook him! Don't think his mom would like that much...

MIL's handyman was over to fix the dishwasher because sediment from the hot water heater clogged it up. No plumber's crack. The electrician that was here a couple of weeks ago was cute but all I could think was that he'd be a nice catch for my stepdaughter. I must be getting old!

I guess I'd better go take the cover off the pool and check the temperature. Maybe we'll have lobster for dinner...

Congrats on your piece of history, Caryn! We seem so eager to cover it up or throw it away. I visiting Scotland (not one of my favorite places, but I made the best of it) some years ago and we toured what was known as a castle from the 1700's. It was raided by the
English during the '45 Jacobite uprising.

Right there in the hallway, was a deep scuff. Made by a British boot, attached to a British soldier. We Americans would have covered it up. Wiped it from our memories. The Scots chose to leave the mark to pay homage to their fellow clansmen.

I see that same attitude in you, Caryn. You're making your ancestral home livable while preserving its history. It's a labor of love, I think.

bonachichi said...

I have never seen this Biggest Loser show. Just the name seems demeaning. Are these contestants treated respectably, or do the producers make fools of them?

And cash prizes for losing weight? SIGN ME UP!!!!

I know my view will be unpopular, but what ever happened to caring about one's apppearnce out of respect for your spouse, children and friends?

I know there are ailments that cause people to gain weight and be unable to take it off. My mother had every single one of them, according to her.

When I was married to my 1st husband (a man I can't stand), he told me one day that I was "getting a little chunky". I really respected the fact that he cared enough to let me know this. I knew it already (I had mirrors), but hearing it from someone else makes it more real.

Anyway, having never seen the show, I don't really have the right to diss it. It's just my first impression based on about 90 seconds of "research". If I'm wrong, I'll be the first to admit it and apologoze.

From what I've seen, the contestants are treated respectfully and are respectful of others. There are instances when the trainers yell at the contestants but it's their job to keep people focused and sometimes that what it takes. It's nothing at all like reality shows that reward the worst in human behavior. The winner of BL is rewarded for hard work...imagine that!

The small cash prizes are for winning physical challenges. Sometimes there's some strategy involved but most of the time it's sheer strength and will. I've found the show to be inspirational.

When I first heard "Biggest Loser", I thought it was an awful name for a show, especially one about people who struggle with weight loss. But being the biggest loser in this show means being a winner.

I think you have to have walked in their shoes to understand why they are there, but I get it. The contestants support one another and are often heartbroken and conflicted when it comes time to vote someone out. They learn alot about themselves along the way and emerge stronger and better than the day they arrived on the ranch.

Anyway, everyone's entitled to have an opnion and this one is mine.

Caryn said...

MEK - I'm envious of your dog park! I don't think we have anything like that around here. I'm sure my dogs miss their weekend beach walks and our trips to the dog park. At least here they have a big yard to romp in.

Hello to all by owl friends..

I feel I have been neglecting all of you.. with me going to the gym nightly, I get home late, have a bite to eat, catch up on e-mails, make sure the nest is in order for tomorrow and the next thing I know its midnight.. Oh and lets not forgot my famous dad as he is squeezed in my night as well..

So my apologies to all of you..

Everything is in order, so I am off to bed..

Hope all had a good day..

:O)

MARY: I'm so glad you have a few more weeks of dental coverage. If the tooth was gonna start hurting..it now looks like it picked the perfect time!

CAROL: You are definately not neglecting us..you're doing something for yourself and taking care of business...this is a good thing!! :)

EBJ: Do you mean chocolate syrup..in that case..oh yes it does.. ;)

G'night everyone..have a wonderful Thursday!

Turtle, one of the jobs is in Lisle which is only about 1 hour and 20 mins. away. We have a counsler in our building who lives in Naperville who drives that 1 hour and ten minute drive back and forth every day.

iteach said...

If he got the job we will see how long he likes that drive, but there is also the possibilty that he can work from home on Fridays.
