YELLING FIRE

by Lynnd

That saying means so much. I understand why you would not yell that in a crowded theater and why it is used when you may be getting attacked both practical practices in my mind. When your husband yells it through your backdoor on a day when your back 4 acres has just been mowed and is in the process of being baled for hay it may cause a little panic!

When this happened to me the other day I have to admit I went into a low level of panic after I confirmed that yes indeed we did have a fire going in the back of our property in a year when everything is tinder dry. I suddenly felt like I was in an “I love Lucy” rerun and I was Lucy.

I immediately ran for the phone to call 911 I reached for that baby like it was a lifeline and then it dawned on me the damn thing is one of the new wonderful cordless phones that don’t freaking work when the power is out!!! Did I mention the cable and power were out? (See my post on July 23rd) after thinking oh fuck, I remembered I had an old stand by phone that I have saved for just such an occasion and it was sitting in the bookcase very close. I ran across the room grabbed it and hurriedly plugged it in. Dial tone, Thank Heavens! I dial 911 CRAAAAAP it won’t go through, I keep getting a high pitched beep instead. I slam the phone down panic rising by the moment. It finally dons on me (I know some of you were already thinking this, Shut up Tina) grab your damn cell phone!! Yep I finally remembered I have a cell phone for emergencies and this was one heck of one. I have it in my grasp and punch in 911, damn why isn’t it ringing. Hello stupid you have to punch call!!! Finally it is ringing. What do I hear? “All Circuits Are Busy At This Time” WTF!!!!!

I close the phone going into full panic mode now and the landline phone rings. I race across the room again and run into the wall trying to get to the damn thing. I right myself and grab it like a life preserver being thrown off a boat. I answer and I hear. “Hello this is 911 we received a hang up 911 call from this number”. I immediately respond with “Yes you did it was me and my property is on fire!!!!! They ask “Where is your property?” I gather my wits enough to give them the location and then they ask “Do you know how the fire started?” My brain goes into WTF again and I respond “NO and I really don’t care right now as MY FIELD IS ON FIRE!” Good lord do I have to do all the work for them? They finally realize I am on the verge and say they will send someone right away.

Mr. Lynn D pokes his head in the door and asks if I had called 911? I tell him Yes! “Then where are the fire trucks?” Ok I have to say at this point I am about to lose it!! I yell at him “how the hell do I know?” “Maybe it’s a slow day for the one operator at the damn one horse phone company we have!” He retreats out the door. I grab my cell phone and head outside while trying to keep the dogs inside. I think they realize I am on the edge and cooperate for once.

I finally get outside and smoke is billowing and you can see flames jumping. In all of this it finally dawns on me the guy baling our hay is still baling away! I keep thinking does he know the field is on fire??? Yep he knows hubby runs back to tell me Al is digging a trench on our side of the fence to try to create a break to stop the fire. He has a front loader on that baler and is going to town! Finally we hear sirens wailing away in the distance and 3 fire trucks arrive above our property on the state highway that runs to the back. Thank God! They are spraying foam and water like crazy! Seems that the wire supporting the power pole snapped and being under pressure it flew up and hit the power lines that caused sparking, hence the fire and also knocked out the power, cable and all.

The whole neighborhood is out watching and hoping that they knock it down fast. Cars are backed up on the state highway both directions. Thanks to Al the baling guy and the fire fighters they stop it before it can spread onto our property and the neighbors next door. Yay!!!!!

What I learned from all of this is that I am not as unflappable as I thought! I have always been someone who stayed calm in a crisis and then fell apart, but for some reason age, peri menopause, not doing Pilates, who knows? I went into panic mode and then was finally laughing by the time it was all over. Oh and Al he just continued to bale the hay after the fire fighters arrived. He is about eighty and I guess at that age nothing seems too dire and should never interfere with doing your job. I think he may have already been through menopause.

Good Morning!

LYNND: I could feel the emotion in your blog today, the fear, the panic..and finally, the relief. Fire is one thing that scares the crap outta me, I think it's because it is so unpredictable and can cause such destruction. I had to smile at the thought of you juggling the phones..I would have done the exact same thing..and forgotten all about the cell too!

I'm glad everyone is ok..and that the damage was contained. Now...have you decided where you're going to put that pond? ;)

Great blog today LYNND..thank you!

Hi MEK! Hi TINA!

Lynn D said...

Tina as far as I am concerned Al is a hero! He may only weigh a buck twenty soaking wet and looks like he bathes once a week and has very few teeth but I want him in my corner in an emergency! One of his friends stopped by in the madness and his comment was "Al's a good guy." That is high praise from a fellow farmer in our parts.

Zona glad to know I am not the only one that would run in circles. PS I have a lovely green blue bruise the size of a silver dollar on my leg. I figure it is from running into the wall! LOL Better than looking like a crispy critter!

bonachichi said...

LynnD, that's a wonderful way to look at a near tragedy. I was expecting to read that the firefighters showed up in their own little clown-car.

Happy Monday to all who land and a HEY to MEK, Tina and Zona!

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Lynn D you are quite the story teller! How much burned before it was put out? Glad you guys are ok.

Congrats on 1st Mek!

Good morning Lynn D, Tina, Zona and Bonacci.

I need to get my hair cut, it is driving me nuts. I hope they have a cancellation today. I need to go to the store for groceries too, so I better go take a shower. BBL

Lynn D said...

Bonacci I have great respect for the fire fighters as they jump right in. The clown cars were reserved for the utility minions that showed up to fix the power outage! Those guys were Asshats!

Shirley reflecting on this I realized how lucky all of us were. If this had happened earlier in the day it would have been so much worse. None of us would have been home! We were all lucky that this happened at about 6:30pm and we were all settling in for the evening. Al had just finished two properties and decided to keep going and finish ours before quitting for the day.

I posted a partial pic on my avatar. Mr. Lynn D took many pictures incase they tried to say Al started the fire. He wanted proof that it originated from the power pole. Mr. Lynn D figures it moved and burned two to three hundred feet of the embankment it took about 15 minutes to move this fast and was gaining speed when the fire fighters showed up.

bonachichi said...

LynnD, did you just use the word, "Asshat"? Someone just called me that a few days ago. I still don't know what it means.

Lynn D said...

Bonacci I don't know what it means either I just like the snarky sound of it! LOL I guess that would be a Depends undergarment if we want to get technical.

Tina~in_ut said...

Bonacci~ It means they want to pray for you~ :)~

bonachichi said...

I don't want to start an Urban Dictionary debate, but I'm pretty sure it's an insult. And after actually reading a listing or two in the Urban Dictionary, probably not something I should have admitted to being called.

Tina, I have a bone to pick with you! After you prayed for me, all Hell broke loose on my laptop. What did you do to me?

Good Morning All....

Lynn D...your account of the fire had me on the edge of my seat!

I inadvertantly was responsible for a very large fire when I was young and I was sure I would be committed to a bayou country chain gang in Louisiana but when the smoke cleared (so to speak) a couple of years later it turns out the Methodist church needed a parking lot where that big old house had stood....so sometimes these things have a silver lining.

It wasn't till 2005 when I drove from Dallas to Midland that upon my arrival in was brought to my attention that several thousand acres that I had just driven through hours earlier were ablaze.
Back then I liked to occasionally smoke while I drove but I feel sure that those fires had nothing to do with the lit cigarettes that I tossed out the window......

BAM 22!!

Lynn D said...

Dee Dee are sure it was a ciggy? Could it have been the heat from your Zorch?

DeeDee said...

omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will never use a another word that anyone might no possibly know the meaning of!!!

Although....just between you and I...my last husband (who is burning in hell) asked me once early on in our relationship....after quite a heated session of lovemaking...if I smoked after sex....I told him I didn't know....so I looked...and there actually was a little puff of smoke....so who knows!

I never say never.......

Lynn D said...

Dee Dee Hello this crowd???? You teach us new word and expect us not to use it in the most derogatory manner?? LOL

Tina, I have no doubt that your prayers are only intended for good. I think you simply don't have it in you to cause someone else harm.

That being said, I was once accidentally electrocuted by a dear friend of mine. He was trying to help by turning that circuit breaker on.

Lately, I have had a lot of interaction with Dawn through Facebook. We "farm" together and always end up chatting away.

Lynn- I just read your blog and my eyes got bigger and bigger as I read it. I sort of had the same reaction when it happened to us.

Our neighbor's garage was destroyed by fire while we were making Easter eggs. At that time we only had Grace and no other children. The police and fire dept. were banging on our doors to get out of the house. They were afraid they wouldn't get it under control in time and told us to evacuate.

Hubby took Gracie to his mom's house within one minute. I refused to get in the car. I didn't want to leave my house. So I stayed next to the fire truck and watched the whole ordeal. It was very scary. They were able to stop the fire right at our fence.

iteach said...

So during that time, I called everyone on the cell phone I knew, because I was nuts. I even called our insurance man.

The first person I called was my dad. He was there lickety split and stood by me the whole time.

JODI...hi back!

I have been talking with Dawn and she is devastated...it happened about 1030 this morning.....I told her to come on over here....that her friends were worried about her.....but I don't know if she can do it or not.....she is in bad shape emotionally....

No word on arrangements yet....I think they may go back to Indiana for the service.....

whabbear said...

Lynn D: That was insanely well written! You have a gift!

As for the fire itself, I was particularly struck by the cause! A wire snapped up and connected with power lines? That could happen anywhere, anytime! Yikes!

I have power lines right along my condo complex at the back. Yikes again!

And yet I was smiling by the end with your humorous description of falling apart!

And speaking of funny things... If this is the dictionary definition of Zorch:

Zorch:The action of sucking the farts out of one's ass.

What should we call it when you try to, um, smoke a vagina?

Voking?

I need help here.

DeeDee said...

whabbear! That is apparently a "new" definition for that word.....ask any old Jewish lady what her zorch is....or...on second thought...u might not want to do that....lol

night.owls.sb said...

Dee..

Thanks for telling Dawn to stop by, that was sweet, you are right her friends are worried about her, when you speak to her again, please tell her the nest is here for her anytime, in any light, in any mood, we are here..

night.owls.sb said...

I did not know Dawn's husband was so very young.. it just makes it even sadder..

Maureen said...

DEE DEE...i am an old Jewish lady...just what would i be saying?

night.owls.sb said...

I so forget to cherish everyday, I so forget to tell loved ones and friends I love them, I so forget that life changes in a moment, I so forget that life is a gift, I so forget....and yet when a loss such as this, I am reminded of my forgetfulness, I don't want to remember at this time, I want to remember daily...

Maureen said...

CAROL...you said that perfectly.

whabbear said...

Dee Dee: I got that from Scrishy's post yesterday... she got it from the Urban Dictionary!

I'll have to check out the other definition!

Carol: So well said! I hope Dawn can stop by and read supportive posts in here, as I'm sure she is in the Colony. Marr posted it in Rossblog today too.

This is about the most tragic thing that's happened to a blogger in the time I've known everybody, I believe. Words are inadequate.

night.owls.sb said...

Mo..

And you would be saying..

"Eat your matzo ball soup its good for you"

:O)

TY

whabbear said...

But speaking of words:

Finally, according to urban dictionary, the 18th most common definition of Zorch:

slang the female sex organ, the vagina.
That is the biggest zorch I have ever seen!

That zorch looks like it has the syphilis monster living inside.

DeeDee said...

Maureen...

I heard that phrase...."my zorch is on fire" from a Jewish friend years ago who used a lot of Yiddish and I have always assumed thats what it was.....but it means like...your "money maker".....or I should say it was in reference to...

East Bay J said...

Dawn, I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't quite know what to say, other than I and everyone else here are thinking of you.

whabbear said...

Lynn D: What is REALLY weird is that the second most common definition of Zorch (after the suck-farts-out-of-asses definition) is this:

Zorch: To destroy or render unusuable, esp with electrical current of improper or fatal voltage or current.

night.owls.sb said...

Ok.. all this "zorching" is making me tired.. :O)

so I am off to bed..
