The crazy and the homeless

It went something like this...

Walking into my favorite most caffeinated place in the world prior to work, Dunkin Donuts. I am approached by a man I presume to be homeless, or down on his luck, he is asking for money to anyone who walks by him. I say no, I was not in the mood. My mood that morning was a sense of survival, the survival part being me and only me, not others begging me for their survival. I enter Dunkin Donuts and proceed to the line that seems to never end when you are craving coffee. This morning, Dunkin Donuts is crowded, lots of ppl coming and going. I wait my turn when I see the man walk into Dunkin Donuts, now normally when I run into someone as he, they never usually walk in, they stand outside. But this brave soul just trotted his way in.

He begins again to beg for money, tapping ppl on their shoulders, walking up to ppl as they work on their laptops, each of these ppl shook their heads no, and allowed him to continue on his quest.

I am now fuming, thinking first off, not everyone could be in the mood I am in, surly someone is in the mood of giving. Finally I saw the giving person, a woman hands him change, and then he moves to another you totally blew him away. I could not take it anymore, my control freak issue which I have tried to tame over the years emerged.

"Excuse me, Excuse me" I yell, all eyes are now turned on the control freak crazy lady, which just happens to me be. He looks up, "Yes you, come here" "Yes ma'am" he says as he walks over to me. I have now stepped up to the counter as my turn as finally arrived. I say "I will not give you money, but I will buy you coffee and something to eat, you have to stop begging, ppl are struggling as well, and they just want to get their coffee and go off to work, so please order what you like" he asks "any size coffee" "yes" I say. He orders a medium coffee and a donut. I pay for his items as well as my X Large Black Coffee and start to turn my back to leave, when I hear "Thank You" I replied with "Have a good day". As I leave I realized not one person said a word about what just happen, they all just went about their business, as if nothing really happen.

So, I am thinking didn't these ppl just see a crazy lady yelling at a homeless man, or was I dreaming that the control freak me surfaced?

Then it hits me, a crazy lady, and a homeless man, is nothing shocking, so why would anyone make a fuss. Normal day, Normal doings. Sad but true.

And that's how I see it..

Morning Glories!

Congrats on first Shirley!

Carol like you I would not give him money but am always willing to buy them food.

Sad but true just another day, the things we get used to and become inured against. Busy keeping our head down so we don't see. If I ignore it, it does not exist in my world.

I could go on but am afraid I will climb my soapbox and get preachy this morning.

Sandie fantastic to see you check in yesterday. I am very sorry about Ipunni.

Scrishy I am also relieved to see you check in with the owls. (((Hugs))) to you!

Mo not pathetic coping the best way you know how. (((Hugs)))

Okay kids need to head out for the day. Food bank gets inspected today for our yearly recertification. Oh Joy.

Dee Dee hmmmm I am picturing a cougar with a bucket of hot water scented soap and a scrub brush out hunting the mean streets. LOL

Good Morning Hooters!!

Congrats on 1st Shirley- mark that down!!

I have often given food- offered up doggie bags and had them gratefully accepted and also had some tell me no, they want cash. NOPE.

I will throw a buck or two into a guitar case if someone is playing on a street corner.

Dee Dee, do you carry the necessary equipment with you to get them out of scruff mode?

Have a good day everyone- going to SIL and BIL's house for the weekend.

Good Morning!

CAROL: I don't think you were being a control freak at all..just someone who cares, not only about the man that was asking for money..but the other people in the Dunkin Donuts. You did a good thing.

My grandfather always said to give with a caring heart, and don't worry about how what you give is used. You gave because you cared..and in the end, that's all that matters.

SHIRLEY: Congrats on FIRST!!

Very interesting, Carol! I'm surprised the homeless guy himself didn't react strangely to you, since your response would have been unusual to him too. I wonder how often he hangs around that particular DD? You'd never seen him before, right?

Meanwhile, ROFLMAO at Dee Dee's milk and bull story! It makes you wonder why I got married!

Good Morning Zona-My-Baby - I am home. My legs were too sore to go shopping. The Emergency Diagnostic Clinic at the Victoria Hospital called me Yesterday to give me an appointment. I missed the call. They are closed today so I have to wait until Monday. I wish I had heard the call. I think I was sleeping at the time.

Good Morning Lynn - I deleted your last "morning". When I see "homeless" I think "food bank" and then I think of you. That's why I thought you wrote the blog. I know I need another cup of tea.

DeeDee Congrats on your #2. Somehow that didn't sound quite right. LOL

Kgrl Why were you up at that ungodly hour?

Dianne Are you speaking from experience? LOL

LynnD I don't mind your soapbox at all. Please climb up there any time you feel the need.

Carol That was pretty bold of you to call to the homeless guy in a room full of strangers. You actually "got involved" which is what everyone else was trying desperately to avoid doing. Kudos to you. We all need a little "crazy" once in a while or we'd never go beyond our self imposed limits.

Goldie Have fun this weekend.

MEK Good morning. Are you swimming today?

Zona You are right. The act of giving is what is important.

Bear I guess that's a whole dating pool that you missed. LMAO

Tinka Good morning, sweet lady. Nice march to #25.

DeeDee said...

Speaking of smoking (J/L) did you all see that homeless guy in the paper that was tasered by the police at which time he burst into flames??!!

I don't know why it struck me as funny but I lmao!...usually when you read about police tasering someone it is because they died but this guy had some burns on his torso....seems he had been sniffing gasoline and the vapors were all around him....I would have loved to have seen the looks on the policemen's faces when he erupted into flames.....PRICELESS!!

DeeDee said...

We have a pretzel place in the mall called Auntie Annes.....you walk up to one window and order than you move down 4 inches to the next window where you get your order....this also cracks me up....just hand me the damn pretzel! Hell!
And at the bank..as you are walking toward the tellers windows they are all open but no one is there....so you pick one and stand there....this girl comes out and walks to another window and says I can help you down here....well you start gathering up all your crap to head down that way and just as you get there the girl who works the window where you were in the first place comes back!!!!!
Or!! You go to the drive thru and all the lanes are full except the commercial lane....well I say no problem and go thru that one..."MAM THIS IS THE COMMERCIAL LANE!!".....and I say no problem...just give me a second...and I am scanning the car for something I can use and viola! A box of Altoids!! So I compose myself...turn to the window....hold up the box of Altoids...you know...like a model would....and I say in my best, breathy..sexy voice....

"Altoids..Couriously Strong!"

Well the teller was not impressed with my commercial....she said "WHAT!" Oh Good Lord..you are holding up the line...what do you need??!!

And for the love of God I could not remember what I needed...and I said....
"WELL NOW YOU HAVE MADE ME FORGET!!"
I burned a little rubber getting out of there but I would like to know what the people who use that lane "do" that is so impressive...HUMPHT!

Hi hooters!

Shirley congrats on 1st!

Carol, you are one of few who get involved. Most of the time we just ignore.

Yesterday when we stopped for gas, there was a young, pretty gal on the corner, holding up a sign saying "need money, out of gas".

She was wearing tight jeans, tight shirt and had a nice figure.

In the few minutes we were at the gas station, at least 7 people pulled up and gave her money.

At another corner was a disheveled man holding up a sign saying "Vietnam vet, disabed, hungry".

Didn't see anyone stop to give him money.

Interesting??

Zona, I bow to you, your Diamondbacks kicked SF ass last night.

The game sucked, but we were in a suite with catered food and booze, so partied the crappy game away.

DeeDee, I cracked up with your "commercial". That is so funny!

Scrishy and MO I am thinking of you both and send big hugs to you.

Hello all; I have not been deported from Earth. So sorry I've not been around. Duty calls in for form of a compound in Maryland and I've been busy as heck.

When I see people "begging" for change, I am suspicious. Reference my previous blog about addiction. I am however, happy to take them to the nearest eatery/grocery store and buy them necessities. I'd rather buy them food, clothes and medicines than wonder if the money will go to drugs.

I will catch up on comments when I have time for such luxuries as breathing. Don't forget me!! Hugs to all, and I miss you!

sacBarb said...

Happy Friday Owls.

Carol, I think what you did is very commendable. I, too, do not like to give money to beggars. I used to work in the heart of downtown across from the Capitol building. There were a lot of homeless people that roamed around nearby and every time I went outside I would get hit up for money. I used to buy McDonald's coupon books and hand out coupons and sometimes the beggar would say "no thanks I need the cash." I would always say "too bad." I don't know if McDonald's sells those coupon books anymore.

Occasionally I will see a homeless person with a dog. I don't understand, if they can't feed themselves, how can they feed a dog. I feel badly for those dogs.

sacBarb said...

Sandie, I am so sorry the hear about your beloved Ipunni. (((HUGS))).

Scirish & Mo, (((HUGS))) to you both.

I have been hobbling around for three days and finally decided to go to the doctor to find out what the hell is wrong with my heel. Well, it seems I have a bone spur on my heel and it hurts like hell. The remedy is Motrin and icing it. I'm thinking wine might help...does wine go with Motrin?

Waving to all the other Owls. I'm going to open the wine and see how much it takes to make me feel better. I'll probably not be back so good night and sweet dreams to you all. ♥♥♥

Then the next day we stroll the Rue's of Paris with a coffee and croissant, followed by a lunch at the Arch De Triomph then dinner in the south of France aboard a luxury yacht?

The next day we can have breakfast at a deli in NYC, followed by a lunch off a cart in Rockefeller Plaza with a dinner at the Tavern on the Green?

Mary is from south Lake Tahoe, and she knew both the kidnapped girl and her mother! She's pretty freaked out by it all.

The female UC Berkely Security police officers are heroes for recognizing that something was weird about that man and the two young robot like girls he had with him. Mary/MI said...

Nite Carol :)

sacBarb said...

Bear, I remember Mary. Is she still in contact with the Mom? I can't imagine how anyone can recover from something like this. And doesn't Seaside Lady live in/near Antioch? Jaycee's children are 11 and 15 and have NEVER been to a doctor. I can't imagine that either. I'm glad that they have kept Jaycee out of the media and I hope it stays that way. She certainly doesn't need stupid reporters asking her inane questions.

Good night and sweet dreams Owls. The wine really didn't help the pain much, but I really didn't care. I'm off to pass out now.
