Our Favorite Cartoons

by Zona
Dedicated to Goldie's Grandbabies

Do you remember Johnny Quest? How about the Banana Splits? Scooby-doo? The Archies? These were all popular Saturday morning cartoons when I was young. For a kid that hated to get up early during the week...I was usually out of bed at 6am on Saturday to watch cartoons. If my dad was awake when my sister and I got up..he would make us each a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast. If he wasn't, we'd get ourselves each a bowl of 'Sugar Pops' and sit in front of the TV and watch the adventures of Penelope Pitstop and H.R. Pufnstuf. As we got older we liked the Monkees and American Bandstand.

Did you watch cartoons on Saturday morning when you were a kid? Which ones were your favorites?

Zona great blog! I liked watching Bug Bunny and the Flintstones. I like watching the Simpsons now. I love watching animated movies, and trying to figure out who is doing the voices.

Well I guess I have a date with hurricane Bill tonight and tomorrow. I went to the store yesterday, so I have batteries and food. I am going to fill up some water jugs and the bath tub. We have been hot and humid here so my fans have been going non stop. If we loose power I may melt. But I have decided to put some wet facecloths in the freezer to help cool me down if the power does go off.

Morning Glories!

Congrats on first Ms. Shirley!

Zona I do remember Johnny Quest! LOL Not my favorite for some reason Johnny bugged the crap out of me.

My favs were the Flintstones and Scooby dooby doo! Of course there was alway the Coyote and the Road runner. Loved them.

Have to go drag my bones into the shower and head out. Have a great day everyone!

I wonder what goldies grandbabies like the most. Dora the Explorer or Disney? Hmmm Hope goldie is having a fabulous time with the babies!

Zona I hope your bday was the best!

Zona..

I watched cartoons every Saturday Morning.. when I was growing up we did not have other channels that had cartoons 24/7.. or DVD or VHS to pop in so I can watch.. Nope I had to wait for Saturdays.. I used to flip between channels.. CBS, NBC, ABC.. some of my favs.. Bugs Bunny and the Flintstones.. I was also a hugh fan of HR Puffinstuff (sp) and oh gosh I can't remember the name.. they were bugs and lived in bug land.. it was not a cartoon.. "Love bug" oh not sure does anyone remember? I used to love that show..

So fun to remember.. Thanks Zona.. and hope you had the best birthday ever!

:O)

Good Morning.....

Well Zona I guess that a great piece on cartoons but for me...televisions weren't invented when I was young. I do remember listening to Little Orphan Annie on the radio. And there were wonderful things at the movies. Fantasia...Dumbo...Bambi came out in the forties.
Another big news item in the 40's was WWII...you may have heard about it....my Father was in the army and he was busy liberating Europe which left my Mother at home with a herd of children....and we lived on a ranch in Central West Texas so we were never bored.
When I think of what it would have been like to have had television...of course it would have been neat. But we had so much fun building forts and being pirates and soldiers.....fighting Nazi's and our endless missions searching for the whereabouts of Adolph Hitler....if that goomer had been anywhere near Brady, Texas we would have surely found him and taken him prisoner.....
Getting to go to town was a big deal....and church of course....so I really don't feel like I missed out on anything....but I must say...that Penelope Pitstop does sound intriguing.....

ZONA...how fun! First your Birthday and now you give US a gift...a great blog!! I didn't think I remembered the cartoons until you listed them. Loved them all, too! On Sunday's my dad would bring the comics into my room and he would have my little blue monkey...Chimpy...read me the comics and then I would "help" him take his insulin and then we would make pancakes for the family. What lovely memories you inspired. THANK YOU!

SHIRLEY...stay safe and cool. That was a great idea about putting the facecloths in the freezer. Oh, and don't forget to mark down your first on your spreadsheet!

LYNN...my ex's name was Bill...I used to say DAMN THAT BILL a lot!!!
My current favorite cartoon is Clifford the Big Red Dog!

CAROL...are you thinking of Land of the Lost? Loved it! And Lidsville, too!! I'm a geek! Have fun at Sweet Melissa's!!

DEE DEE...your childhood sounds wonderful. And we dont miss what we never had, anyhow. Many thanks for your dad's service and helping to liberate Europe.

Also, I am ecstatic for you and Dean!!!!

Good Morning Carol - I am really aging myself. When we wanted to go from CBS to ABC we had to go outside and turn the antenna. Boy that really dates me.

Tinkatia said...

Dee Dee - I listened to the cartoons on radio after school each day at 4:00. There was one called "Gerald McBong Bong". He could only talk in sound effects. When I had my first baby he was 2 before he stopped talking in sound effects. A truck was "brrmmm brrrrmmm" etc. I was honestly worried he was going to turn out like Gerald McB. He rather fooled me when he got his Masters in Biological Sciences. First time mothers worry so much.

The first movie I saw was Bambi. I was 8. I cried so hard when his mother died.

Tinkatia said...

My kids lived for the Saturday morning cartoons. They loved Tweetie Bird and so many others. My grandchildren watch ones that I have never heard of. My baby watches "Treehouse". They didn't let her see T.V. until she was 2. I don't think it hurt my other two grandchildren who watched them from their playpen but I say nothing.

Tinkatia said...

Zona - I can't get the video on this computer but i will watch it when I get home Sunday night. I must go. Jack has just fed the fish and I haven't cleaned up the kitchen yet. I think I have used up my share of the farm's computer time so I will check out. I hope you have a great birthday. I am glad the flowers got there in good shape. Love, Audrey

What a fun blog, Zona! I'm afraid I was one of those deprived, abused children who wasn't allowed to watch the telly. We were punished with family card games, popcorn or twilight bike rides.

Shirley, I hope Bill doesn't hurt you to badly. I'm thinking of you!

Have a great Saturday, Hooters!

Just_Lin said...

Shirley Congrats on first! Hunker down and stay safe from Bill.

Zona Fun blog today. What I remember about Saturday mornings is buying donuts from the Helm's Bakery truck that would come around. Besides the chocolate covered ones, my younger brother and I really, really loved the apple spice ones with a white shell frosting with tiny bits of peanut in it. We have discovered that a lot of people have tried to find that recipe online but no one seems to have it. Anyway, we would get our choices of donuts and watch our favorite shows. The one I remember the most was not animated. It was "Fury" about a wild stallion befriended by a young boy. We had to keep an eye on our cat, Millie, because she would steal our donuts.

Just_Lin said...

As a pre-teen, I got a kick out of a show called Fractured Flickers, hosted by Hans Conreid. Cartoon segments on the show included Rocky and Bullwinkle (with villanous spies Boris and Natasha) and a cartoon about a time traveling dog and his pet boy called Mr. Peabody and Sherman. I remember the dog as acting rather superior and snotty which is probably why I liked him. LOL

Morning Everyone!

SHIRLEY: Congrats on FIRST! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Bill doesn't cause you any problems. Put lots of water in the fridge too..and please stay safe.

LYNND: Actually..Bandit was my favorite character on JQ..lol..

CAROL: I'm going to get right on the "bugs living in bugland" question..google here I come! :)

DEEDEE: My cousins, sibs and I spent countless afternoons and evenings in the backyard building forts, playing tag, having water balloon fights and swimming. My mom wasn't the biggest fan of kids being inside on a nice day. The only time she was really ok with it was Saturday mornings..and only if my sister and I didn't fight..lol..

MO: I loved when my mom would make french toast on Sunday mornings for all of us. She let my dad cook breakfast one time..but only one time..I think it had something to do with the egg on the ceiling.. ;)

TINKA: Mr Z still loves cartoons too..he remembers when he would watch them with his older brother. He said it was one of the only times his brother didn't tease him, they just had fun watching. Kinda cool.

btw...I don't think the video works..it didn't for me..

BONACHICHI: We were always encouraged to go out and play..or if it was too hot we could stay in and read. I'm glad my parents were ok with us watching cartoons on Saturdays tho, cuz I have so many great memories from those days.

J/LIN: I watched that show!! Do you remember the 'Fractured Fairytales' segment? I think some of that stuff, although aimed at kids was just clever enough for adults to 'get' too.

J/L~ ur making me hungry....I loved the chocolate cake donuts with chocolate icing and coconut sprinkled all over them! Both my dad and I loved them! Very few make them now~ :(

Tina~in_ut said...

Zona~ I loved watching Scooby-Doo, the Flintstones, Archie's Funhouse, Bugs Bunny and Road Runner Hour, Heckle and Jeckle, Josie and the Pussycats, Harlem Globetrotters, H.R. Puffnstuff, The Jetsons, and then we ended with American Bandstand! For some reason, I remember my sister and I watching, but not the boys.....they must have watched with us...but I don't remember them being there~

Maureen said...

TINA...as a matter of fact, I do still have Chimpy! I got him when I was born, so I guess that makes him 28 now!!!!!

OH, btw...my dad was a cook in the army for a while.

Maureen said...

I have a cute American Bandstand story. I grew up in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood and the Saturday is the Sabbath and the orthodox don't watch tv, work, cook, etc....on Saturday. There was a teenage girl that lived across the street...Chava. She loved AMerican Bandstand and they would leave the TV on from before the Sabbath, on the channel it was on. When the mailman came, he would go in and turn up the volume for her and she would sit and watch it! When it was over, she would get some neighbor that wasn't Orthodox to come in and turn off the tv!!

Thank you for the blog ZONA. It brings back so many memories. There wasn't very much on television when I was young. I remember Crusader Rabbit, Kukla Fran & Ollie(hand puppets), & Howdie Doody. Oh, and there was Comic Weekly on the radio. My sister and I played house with our dolls, but otherwise we lived outside.(which I am sure everyone else on the blog did also) Later we watched Disney on Sunday nights. I remember it opening with "When you wish upon a star" Every time I hear that song I am so sentimental, as I immediately go back to my living room, with my family, lying on the floor.

Lani said...

SHIRLEY - If I didn't know you were talking about a hurricane I would think you were going to be on one wild date. :) Seriously, I hope you stay safe.
CAROL - Have a good time at the BBQ today.
TINK - I now have an excuse to watch Wonder Pets & Baby Einstein.
EUNICE - You look like you are running for class president.

In fourth grade, I would rush home from school to watch the original incarnation of American Bandstand, broadcast from Philadelphia. I learned to dance by watching the "regulars", Bob and Justine and Frankie and Arlene.

MO I think you're right. I think it was Wally Cox.

Dianne LOL I guess we forgot that you grew up UNDER A ROCK! ;)

Hello Owls!

I'm slowing catching up.

I have Thurs. blog, Friday's and today's.

On to Thurs., oh my heavens, I so love Mary Poppins. She ranks right up there with Snow White.

I read all the original Mary Poppins books and they were good.

In the books she has a little bit more vinger in her. But I still adore her. I love that movie!

Great choice of b-day card Zona to give to Carol!

Zona: Great blog! I liked scooby doo and the flintstones. I don't like many cartoon shows really though.

I am having a weird night. I am all alone. Hubster went to Houston, oldest out (he's actually moving out Sept 1), middle one out with girlfriend prolly late or all night and youngest at boyfriends. It is so quiet. I thought about going to see a movie (Her sisters keeper) but I haven't gone yet. I need diet cokes but I haven't gone yet. Kind of enjoying the peace and quiet. no tv, no radio..just a fan buzzing in the background and the soft click clack of the laptop keyboard. Very nice.

Tink and DeeDee: What's your first memories of TV? We had it all the time I was growing up, but only one channel, CBC, because my rural area didn't have cable yet. I missed most of the Saturday morning cartoons except when I was visiting our cousins in Toronto.

Shirley: Glad to hear you're all prepared. Could be a wild Bill!

DIANNE: LOL! You goof.. :)

TINA: I'm still waiting for all the stuff in the Jetson's to be invented..where are those flying cars anyway??

MO: My sister and I watched American Bandstand..I think my brother might have creeped out of his room to watch too..

J/LIN: Ok..I'll admit it..I have Fraggle Rock on dvd..the whole series...

MEK: I think we were lucky..there were just enough cartoons on to make it fun. There is kind of a cartoon overload now.

J/LIN2: I ran home from school to watch Dark Shadows..but that's a whole 'nother blog!! :)

HI JENNIFER..I left you a comment in Area 51. I liked that card so much Mr Z was going to buy it for me!

Love Dee Dee and Tinka's stories. Even tho we had TV the adults always had first pick so I do remember being sent outside to build forts. Chasing bugs through tall grass, riding bikes down steep hills into traffic. Being dragged by a radio flyer wagon. Playing Cowboys and Indians, Fashion show, House and so much more.

Thanks for the memories gang!

I don't remember a time without TV. I remember our first color TV. My dad decided he was going to watch the World Series in color that year. It was a Zenith console! No remote controls in those days. And when I came home for lunch it was As The World Turns!

LYNN...I hope your back feels better soon.

JENNIFER...the girls names I see at work are sometimes downright mean to give a child! And if they are twin girls...OMG! It makes me think the parents just grab Scrabble tiles and make up names from the letters in any old random order!

Hi everyone! This is my last night in Oregon. Babara drove us to Mt Hood where we took a ski lift to the snow line. I couldn't believe there were people skiing and snowboarding!
We saw a beautiful water fall and had lunch. Jaimie and I crashed when we got back . We slept for 4hrs!
Must have been that Mt. air and lack of sleep. We took a lot of pics. I will post when I get back,,, when I recoup lol!

Today's blog brought back a lot of memories. We didn't have a tv for a long time. We spent most of our time outside playing and making up games. I loved hop scotch and jumping rope. We did finally get a tv. I loved anything from Walter Lantz and Walt Disney.

Lanni, I still get nostalgic when I hear that song! Also,M-I-C,
K-E-Y,
M-O-U-S-E!!
