This Night Owl Blog has given so much! It is a fun place, we don't bash and we have fun being "tedious"! We offer advice, give love, lots of free food and an open forum which can be about anything that is important, thought provoking or just plain silly. And sometimes we just March (some to different drummers, but all together). :) It is not about a single person, it is about all the people on any given day blended together.....Goldie!

Toys of Childhood
Toys of Childhood
by Zona
for Vig
Hula Hoops. Liddle Kiddles. Creepy Crawlers. Mousetrap. Toss Across. These are a few of the many toys I had when I was a child. Oh, I didn't forget Barbie, but I think I was more interested in the accessories than the actual doll. I loved the Barbie Dune Buggy..which I still have. Do you remember Mystery Date? "Open the door to your...Mystery Date"? My sister had a Mrs. Beasley doll, which was made famous in the TV show 'Family Affair'. My brother had 'Fort Apache'..and I loved to play with it while he was at school. He would come home and wonder who moved his horses..but my mom never told on me. I also took his GI Joe, as I found him to be a better date for Barbie than Ken.
My favorite game was 'Mousetrap'...until one of the kids in the neighborhood stole the hand..without the hand the marble couldn't fall and spring the cage over the mouse. I was devastated.
I always wanted an 'Easy Bake Oven'..but my mom told me that I could help her bake a cake in a real oven instead. Where's the fun in that? I wanted to cook by a light bulb!!
What toys and games do you remember having as a kid...which ones were your favorites? Was there one that you never received that you still wish you would have gotten?? Did you keep any of your childhood toys??
I did, they are always there to remind me of the happiness and innocence of my youth.

I had forgotten how fun the game's used to be, then the grankids came along and we got back into them!
More FUN the second time around!
Does everyone have plan's for the long weekend?!
I don't...not yet anyway!
xoxoxo
Is Everyone sleeping in this morning???
Well, it look's like I'm dancing with myself!! LOL
Off to the shower!

Morning Glories!!!
Birdee is in the nest!! She got first so neener neener on everyone else! LOL
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEK!!!!
Zona fun blog!
I remember I had the doll that grew hair I think her name was Christie. You would push a button in her belly and her hair would grow and was long and a beautiful red. Then you would twist a knob in her back and it would retract into her head! She was great until my brother gave her a mohawk!!!
I did not have Barbies my Dad never bought them for me. So I would go to a neighbors and play all day. You are right the clothes and accessories were the best part!
I remember playing spill the beans with real dried beans, A barrel of Monkeys (that is for Zona), Candy Land, Operation, Old Maid, I know there are more but the brain pan is scrapping bottom!
I remember jump ropes and one item that had a hard plastic loop you put around your ankle and the there was a long attached piece of plastic and a large plastic cup at the end. You made it turn around your ankle and had to jump over the long plastic rope and miss the bell. I could do that for hours!!
And yes I had a hula hoop! Who didn't??? I actually won a hula hoop contest when I was a kid!! How fun! Now I have hoop around my middle and I have lost my hula!
Great memories!!
Ohhh Birdee is going dance with herself in the shower! LMAO
From Area 51:
Greys was great last night I agree!!
But does anyone know as I don't keep up with entertainment news. Is or Could Ellen Pompeo (Meredith) pregnant?? I just ask because her face seemed fuller last night and they have been keeping her pretty much in scrubs the last few shows. I also noticed at the end that she had a t-shirt on and her chestal area seemed fuller. Just wondering.
Betty was fun last night too!
Tinka: You were a marching fool yesterday! LOL You slid in and pushed MEK right out of 100 and took 150!! Way to go!
Zona: Great fun talking to you yesterday! Tell Mr. Z I am looking for some more throwing starst for him! LMAO
BarbWA: I may have to watch the new dancing show! LMAO Popped a Boner???? ROFLMAO
Be back in a bit!
Just and FYI
I went to my comcast home page and One of the title stories in the news was:
Cougar vote led to Idol win!
With a picture of David Cook.
LMAO Way to go Cougars!!!
GOOD MORNING!!!!!
Hello and Congrats on 1st birdee!
hello to you lynn! I think everytime I read your posts that we are long lost sisters. I loved that jumping thing with the ball at the end of the rope you put on your ankle.
Mousetrap and Operation were my favorite games. I also loved hula hoops and I had an Easy Bake oven and Barbies an etch-a-sketch, and Mr. Potato Head! I also had a doll that was a "Hi Heidi" doll. You pressed her belly and her arm shot up! Since my name is Heidi it was a given that I had that doll.
My SIL gave my granddaughter(age 2) Barrel of Monkeys for Christmas. It was her favorite gift!
What a great blog Zona- another start of a day with a smile on my face.
Good morning!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEK!! What are you doing today?
I remember playing Candy Land, Mousetrap, Monopoly, Scrabble, Life, Mystery Date and Operation.
I can remember the theme from Mystery Date! yikes.
I had Barbies and a hula hoop. My brother had GI Joe and we would pretend that he and Barbie would swim in the bathroom sink when he came home.
Hi Birdee and Lynn and Carol!
Poe woke me up before 6:00 this morning, wanting out of his cage.
No plans for the long weekend, I am working extra on Sunday. Going to a bbq on Saturday. If it's warm enough (and it doesn't look like it will be) we will hang out by the pool.
We are getting new bedroom furniture today, I'm so excited!
Hi Goldie!
I forgot to mention, great blog Zona!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEK!!!!!!!!
Hi ebj- new furniture is always exciting!
Hmmm I think we have re-ignited romance in the nest!! EBJ and MEK new bedroom furniture!!! LOL
Hey Goldie what the hell were those things called??? LMAO As I never had a sister, I love that I am finding my long lost sisters here! (((Hugs)))
Chinese checkers, Parcheesi, Monopoly are few more I remember. My Dad would play with us and you had to watch him like a hawk. It did not matter how old you were, he would cheat to win!!! Still does! LOL
Some of the best toys we made ourselves. Grandma J kept a trunk of old dresses and hats and purses etc.. at her house and it was dress up time. Great fun! Except all the girl cousins would fight over who got to wear the best dress.
One summer I remember all of the neighbor kids were bored and it was so hot. The kid across the street brought out huge pieces of plastic sheeting his Dad was a house painter, and we made our own slip and slide! Whew we could move fast on that thing! There would be 15 or twenty of us. We even got in trouble because we would steal the dish soap and pour it out all over it and zoom you were off!!
Ahh Memories!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEK-O-ROONIE~~~~~
I'm early today because I have to work at 8am today. Blah. Oh well...extra money. At least I get off at 2~
oooooo that sounded dirty.....
Childhood toys, lets see......
cards, board games, Me dolls (Barbie) Lite-Brite (loved lite-brite)my brothers hot wheels with the orange race track. Can't think of anyting else. My Barbie didn't have all the extra accessories. I used empty egg cartons and wash cloths for the couch and or bed. I had some great clothes though. I kick myself that I gave all of that stuff to my niece instead of keeping it. Oh well. Lesson learned.
Off to work!
lynn, I don't remember what they are called. I know I was damn good with them, and the hula hoop! I could shake it back then like no ones business!! (thats how I attracted Mr. Goldie, tee hee).
Good Morning!
Birdee, Lynn D, Goldie, EBJ and anyone else that posts after me..
MEK:
Happy Happy Birthday! :O) ♥♥
Birdee:
Congrats on First! So good chatting with you the other day!
To All:
Have a great Day!
Zona:
Thank you ever so much for your blog today, I so appreciate it!
I loved my childhood games, Barbie, Hula Hoops, Mousetrap...
I remember them so well.
Thanks for the memories...
:O)
Off to work!
See ya all later!
Mornin Owls!
Happy Birthday MEK
I had that ankle thing too and would play with that for hours.
Anyone ever play "Four Square"? You drew a tennis court (only smaller) kinda thing in chalk and would bat a large red ball between 4 people until someone missed. They were then out and you continued on until only one person was left. I would drive my Mother bonkers practicing against the house :)
Waving at everyone in the nest as I fly off, I'm late this morning!!
Hi Carol have a great day!!
Scrishy: Yes I remember four square!! We would play it at school all the time! Hopscotch was another favorite!! We could draw that with chalk. Ohhh and Jacks I loved to play jacks!
One more Pick up sticks!!
Goldie: Hula on girl!!! Mr. Goldie did not know what hit him! LMAO
scirish- oh yes, I loved 4 square!!
Have a great day everyone and a nice weekend. I am taking off now and I will be back on Monday. Zona said she would leave a light on for me!!!
ok, one last march before I go....
23

25!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For MEK
Have fun Goldie! We will miss you!
Birdee nothing exciting this weekend in our house. I am toying with the idea of cleaning out my closet this weekend. Mind you that is just in the thinking phases right now! LOL
Good Morning Owls!
I still have my Raggedy Ann doll and my Mickey Mouse watch. :) A lot of the games I loved have already been mentioned, but Life was my favorite. Battleship was another fun one. Remember Click-Clacks? We had a lot fun with those at school, but I think they were taken off the market because of eye injuries.
Zona: Thanks for the trip down memory lane! :)
Happy Birthday MEK!!!
I have to get back to work so waving HI to everyone!

Happy, Happy Birthday MEK! I hope you have a fabulous special day!
Happy Memorial Day weekend to all the wonderful American Owls!
Zona, Zona, Zona....you little monkey (in reference to your neighbourhood trees) you did it! You wrote the blog that I knew you had in ya and I knew you would do well. Good on ya!!!!
Zona and I have talked about toys on the phone and it has brought back memories of many forgotten childhood favourites. Little kiddles (thanks again for my girls, Zona), Incredible Edibles, The Easy Bake Oven (the last two which I never had but always coveted my friends'!)
I remember spending many hours with silly putty, Lego, etch-a-sketch, Spirograph(loved, loved, loved that one!) Kerplunk, slinkies, Gumby and Poky, troll dolls and of course, Barbie (although I was always most concerned about the case...I wanted the shiny black one and I had the skinny blue one that was actually meant for Skipper!!!)
I think that ankle thing (which I loved too) was called a bell hop.
Thanks for chats and a blog that has brought back wonderful memories, Zona!
Happy FRIDAY!!!
Good Morning, everybody...
It's pouring down rain STILL in the desert - the wind is blowing out of control..
and Mr. MEK is hungry - we are going out to breakfast this morning, and our golf is obviously canceled...... BUMMER...
ZOna - LOVE your blog and will be able to comment later - (someone has antsy pants) LOL.. and actually get to read all the comments for far - SO - I'm doing a WHABBY swoop in!!!
I hope everyone has an excellent day -
:-)
bbl
Wow, Zona-my-Baby you wrote a great blog today. Isn't that your third or fourth? And you said you didn't think you could write one. I am so proud of you. I still can't think of a second one to write.
Happy Birthday to Mek the Master of Marches. Are you wearing your proper shoes today? I wore myself out yesterday being as Lynn said "a marching fool". I don't think I will be very good at it today.
Tia let me sleep until 7:30 this morning so there are already a lot of owls in the nest.
Good Morning Birdee - I hope you are feeling better today.
Good Morning Goldie, East Bay J, Barbara, Carol and Scirish. I hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend.
Good Morning Bear, VIG and all the other owls who are working, playing or sleeping.
Toys of Childhood - Come visit me and you will probably find your favourite toy. I have saved them all. Most of the toys that have been mentioned belonged to my children (now I am showing the age difference) and they were all left with me because I have a house of toys. I think the reason why I hang on to every toy now is because of the ones I lost as a child. I was 5 years old when we moved West. Everything was left in Halifax, all the furniture, toys and most of our clothes. It was very expensive then to transport more than a small suitcase. To leave my doll carriage behind nearly broke my heart. I was allowed to take my 'Wettems doll' (any-one remember that one?) When we got on the train I realized I had accidentally left it in my uncle's car. My heart that was already broken broke some more. I received another little doll with a diaper that Christmas but I yearned for another doll carriage and never got one. I believed (and still do) in Santa Claus but my mom told me they had to pay Santa Claus for the gifts and we could never afford to have him bring me another carriage. When I was expecting my first baby I got such a thrill out of buying the biggest and best baby pram available. I still have it filled with dolls. I loved miniature doll furniture as a child and I was given it piece by piece. Zona sent me some that belonged to her mother and it is now in my doll house that has a whole corner of my Living Room. Thank you Zona, you have no idea how much that meant to me. There is even a little ironing board and iron. I have said before that part of me will always be six years old. Maybe a psychiatrist would say that was because of the trauma I received leaving every thing I had, or everyone I had known, behind when I was almost six. I just figured that one out myself and saved the price of a a 'shrink'.
Have fun today everyone. The weather is beautiful here and I hope it is where you all are too.
Good Morning to the owls who were posting while I was typing.
Amicus - Don't work too hard today.
Mek - the Birthday Girl who is still the Master of Marching today.
VIG - My friend and neighbour. My girls were disappointed with their Easy Bake Ovens. They never baked the way it did on the T.V. ad. It wasn't long before they were using my oven. You didn't miss much in my opinion.
I think my children were the envy of their friends because my mom made such a beautiful wardrobe of clothes for their Barbies. Mom must have made at least 100 over the years. The Barbies and their suitcases were not left with me. My girls took them. I still, however, have all of my son's Tonka trucks and electric train. They are huge and fill one wall of my garage. If he had a son I think he would take them but for now they are with all my other toys.
Thanks again Zona for bringing back the memories. And Good Morning to you. I think I forgot to say that.
#35
Happy Frisky Friday Owls.
Birdee: Great to see you posting and you are even #1. Yay for you. I have no exciting plans for the weekend. I may go to a movie with a friend, but that's not exciting.
MEK: H B 2 U Sorry your golf game got rained out. I hope you have an AMAZING day!
Zona: You did it again! You wrote a wonderful blog that evokes so many happy memories in all of us.
LynnD: LOL @ lost your hula. I didn't notice all that about Merideth and I haven't heard anything about her being PG. Yay for us Cougars. We showed those teeny boppers.
Goldie: Do you still shake that thang for Mr. Goldie?
EBJ: New bedroom furniture...FUN!
Barb/WA: Lucky you...getting off early. Hope no one sees you!
Tinka: What a sad story that you had to leave all your toys and friends.
VIG: How's the eyes?
Carol: I want to thank you again for creating this wonderful place for us. And to all the Owls, I love you all.
Waving a wing at Bear, Jodi, scirish, Amicus, and everyone else who lands after me.
Tinka...good morning fellow Victoria-ite! Lovely day, isn't it! Glad to hear the Easy Bake Oven wasn't what it was hyped to be. My friend had one and I just remember that it took forever to bake a tiny little morsel of cake. I love that you have found and kept so many things that were important to you as a child and to your children. Your grandkids must love going to your house...definitely kid friendly. Fabulous!
Does anyone remember the insects that you could make in a little oven? I think they were called Creepy Crawlies.
Sacbarb...good morning! Thanks..the eyes are getting better. Happy Memorial Day Friday!!!!Hope you have fun at the movies! What do you think you might see?
Good Morning Owls!
I am the worst in the toy store because I always want my kids to have everything I loved as a kid!
When I was pregnant with my first child, I discovered Ebay. Since my mom had gotten rid of everything I felt like I had to win all these auctions to reclaim a part of my past to hand off to my unborn child. HA! I still have all of the loot that I bought and she is now 9. I got so much old Fisher Price stuff I could open a museum. I prefer the older models though, with the dowel people. Just a dowel and a wooden ball and hours of fun! Loved them AND Weebles! I also got the FP baby ball with the rocking swans...do you remember that?
I moved on and loved playing with Barbie. I had the Dream Boat and together we sailed the world. My best friend had the apartment with the elevator though, and I was incredibly jealous. She didn't even like Barbie, but Santa brought it to her! The nerve!
A lot of my childhood toys were things we had around the house. I would play outside a lot and we were always Indians or later we played Little House on the Prairie. My moms pots and pans were carried outside (without her permission) and we would create all kinds of delicious meals with dandelions and grass and twigs (no, we never ate it... just cooked over an unlit campfire.)
My brothers are 7 and 10 years older than I am, so I didn't have a lot of the games... but I wanted them. Especially Mouse Trap! I loved building it and setting the trap... we never actually played the game. Also Operation! (We now have SpongeBob Operation for my kids.) I dreamed of candy while playing CandyLand and wished I could jump into the board, just like Mary Poppins did when she jumped into those chalk drawings.
One other favorite that I STILL like to play with is Etch-a-Sketch!
Happy Birthday MEK!!
Hope you all have a GREAT holiday weekend. Stay safe!!
I didn't have a Barbie because I was too old for dolls (I was told) when they came out. My mother finally got me one for my 50th birthday. I guess I bitched so much she finally succumbed to the pressure. LOL I didn't have a lot of toys, but I did have roller skates (with a key that adjusted them and I wore it around my neck) and I roller skated a lot. My friends and I played a lot of cards, War, Old Maid, Canasta, all outside on the sidewalk or the front lawn. And hopscotch and jacks. Whatever we did, it was outside. All wonderful memories. Thanks Zona.
Hi again!
Did anyone have an ant farm? It was a slim, plastic container that you put sand in, then you added the ants (they sent you a vial of live ants!)
You could watch them dig tunnels. I was fascinated by that!
The furniture co. just called and even tho my new furniture arrived to their store 2 weeks ago, they just discovered (while loading it on the delivery truck) that one of the bed rails is damaged.
So, after I bitched and complained, they will bring everything but the bed. They will bring a "loaner" bed frame since my new mattress is being delivered this afternoon.
I have to admit, the man was very, very nice to me, even tho I was having a meltdown. Now I feel bad for my outburst.
I was really surprised at how upset I got, it is so unlike me to blow like that.
Hi G!!!
I loved Candyland too! Still do! I will play that with hte grandkids.....whenever they get here! I will have all of those games, Sorry, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders. The toy I most envied that a friend had was a Barbie Pageant Runway! I loved that! I wanted it sooooo bad. She had another game that we played a lot that I liked. I think it was called Masterpiece. It was a game where you bought paintings. I don't know why we loved it so much. I think it had to do with we always had our favorite paintings and wanted to be sure to get them. When I went to the Chicago Art Inst and actually saw the REAL paintings it reminded me of that game.
i will separtate the post....
Birdee - I can't believe I forgot to say "Congrats on being # 1". I so much appreciated people saying that to me yesterday and today I forget. Please forgive me. I know you will because you love me as I love you too. Don't work too hard today.
SacBarb - Yes it was sad leaving every thing behind. It took my mother years to get over leaving her entire family so far away. She still refers to Halifax as 'home'. I am glad we moved West however. It's hard to find a nicer place to live in Canada.
VIG - So you experienced how long it took to cook a little cake with a light bulb? Most of them never did bake. But wasn't the ad on T.V. so very appealing? We did the "creepy crawlies" thing and the shrink-a-dinks or were they the same thing? My kids loved all those games mentioned so far. We had so much fun with them. I remember the year when my son was a little older and I got him a rock polishing kit. The noise it made was unbelievable. That was his favourite thing to do for months after Christmas. Every once in a while he looks for it in the basement. Somehow it seems to have disappeared. My youngest daughter is looking for her Pac Mac too. When she spent hour after hour on it one Christmas I thought the novelty would wear off. It never did. She also periodically searches the basement for it. It too mysteriously disappeared. I honestly didn't throw them out. They really disappeared as if by magic.
I'm at work in the other bldg and I'm bored to tears, so you will have to just skip these posts if I get to many of them!
I loved Etch-A-Sketch too. My friend Jenny has a friend whose husband can make....lets say....very anatomically correct sketches! Some people just have a gift.
What else....someone mentioned pick up sticks, barrel of monkey. I loved all the card games, old maid, go fish, war, slap jacks, solitaire. I played a lot of cards. I still buy playing cards. I try to not buy them when we are on vaca. But I always pick them up. Oh and I love Yahtzee! Still have that and Scrabble in the trailer along with I don't know how many decks of cards.
Someone mentioned little kiddles. I never got any of those, but my sisters had them. Are those the little dolls that smelled like Lilacs and Roses??? My friend Beth found hers when they were moving her parents into a condo. I told her not to get rid of them because they are worth money. I saw them on eBay for something like $50 bucks. I think. Don't quote me on that! I just know it was ridiculously high. I'm still such a kid when it comes to games. I love playing them, espicially when we are camping. I miss camping all the time with the kids because that's what we did every night, play cards or a board game. I made the mistake one time of confessing that I cheated at Monopoly, so no one ever wants to play that game with me now. And they ALWAYS accuse me of cheating at Clue because I always win, but I'm just good at it! I mean come on....how can you cheat at CLUE! I never put the cards in the envelope, so it's not like I look at that or something! But they never believe me because I won't tell them my secret to winning the game!
Glynis - We had every Fisher Price toy too. I saved them for my grand children but they never wanted to play with them the way my kids did. That disappointed me. My grand kids would spend hours with Mr. Potato Head and building things with leggo. My grand daughter at 10 hasn't played with Barbies for 2 years. Kids are growing up so much faster now.
SacBarb - Your childhood memories are similar to mine, roller skating, hop scotch and Jacks. We played outside almost every daylight hour coming home only for meals and when it got dark. My children played in the neighbourhood a lot but my grand kids are always with an adult nearby. It is a different world out there now.
I have always wanted a rock polisher! But the price was always so high. I think like $80 or something! There was a house about a mile from mine. It was a couple neighborhoods over. There was a house there that had a store set up in a converted garage. The man there sold polished rocks, and necklaces and stuff that he made. Oh my god I loved to go there in the Summer! I spent so much time just looking at his rocks. (oh my...that sounds nasty! I think I will just leave it there!) Does anyone get different feeling associated with different memories? I guess that would just be natural. I have a very distinct feeling associated with that memory.
GAWD......I'm so friggen bored....
When I leave at 2pm today I am going to pick up mom and we are going to go see the new Indiana Jones movie! I love me some Harrison Ford!
I'm sorry...I should probably go on myspace and kill some time there so that you guys don't ahve to keep reading my ramblings!
Birdie
Congrats on #1 & #2. I left you an e-mail over at Myspace.
SacBarb
We had Old Maid also.It was one of our favorites. We liked cards and the game Operation and Battleship.
LynnD
The neener neener cracked me up. I spit my ice tea out on the monitor.
Glynis
Me and my sister played Barbie all the time. In fact I still collect dolls but now I collect LE Barbies and dolls.
Growing up my sister and I did have an Easy Bake oven. We made cakes and even bubble gum or something goopy like that and then gave it to our parents to eat. They would always eat our baked goods and smile and say how wonderful it all tasted.
Okay, well I'm out of here. We're having a pool side BBQ this week end. My Dad is grilling steaks and I'm making potato salad and fruit salad so I'm off to the grocery store with a long list.
Good morning, Tink, SacBarb, and all of my feathered friends!
I used to like to play Doctor.
OK, just kidding! Love this topic, Zona, and I'll comment a little later, after we get back from IHOP!!
50
YES -
We just got back from breakfast!!
I need to read all the comments - BUT - at 9a.m., two tables were drinking PITCHERS of beer!! I guess it was Five o'clock somewhere!! LOL
Okay - off to read all the comments!!!
Zona - i was thinking about all the toys I had while growing up while we were out!!
:-)
51 For MEK
Hi everyone! I am so glad that this blog is bringing back happy memories!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MEK!!!
BIRDEE: Congrats on FIRST! You early bird! Didja get the worm?? ;)
The only plan we have for the weekend will be to get out the grill and do up some hamburgers. Nothing fancy. Personally, I hope it rains!
LYNND: When I think of jumping rope now I just laugh..I can't believe I could even jump "double-dutch". I'd fall on my head if I tried it now!!
GOLDIE: Operation is one of the games that I believe has made me so jumpy as an adult!
EBJ: LOL @ you remembering Mystery Date...it does seem to stick in your brain doesn't it??
BARB/WA: My brother had the Hot Wheels Loop the Loop track too!! Little Kiddles were the ones in the perfume bottles, and there were Storybook Kiddles too. We had Peter Pan, but he melted. :(
gonna split this in two...
well MEK was 51 for MEK!!!
I am dropping off 2 coolers full of Jell-O shooters to celebrate MEK's B'day!!!
Barbara - You aren't rambling. I love reading your posts. I could never understand the love of rock polishing but I know my son had a passion for it. I did like the finished product however. I guess that's the secret. Ignore the noise and think of the gorgeous outcome. That could almost be a philosophy for life. LOL
That was #55. I am not doing too badly today.
Birdee!!!! congrats on 1st!!!!!!
Zona ... i love all my toys I had.. I had a Mrs. Beasley doll..I loved her... but Barbie was my all time favorite I had sooooo many accessories ... Off to read all the comments...
Been out of the nest fror a few days... will never catch up...
I will try..
Ibebold - Don't get these owls on to jello shooters today. Remember last time, my daughter was left alone in the nest. I am still not over that one.
Whabbear - Good Morning. I hope you are having a good time. When I read your first post that said you liked playing doctor I believed you. Then you said you were kidding. Fess up. Which is it? Who did you play doctor with? I want to know the whole story.
#60 That's close to my age.
TINKA: I am so sorry you lost so many of your things. My mom would love knowing that you have the dollhouse furniture.
VIG: I forgot all about the Incredible Edibles..I think they were the precursor to Gummy Worms! I loved Spirograph too..and we had that big ol' set with all the wheels and curly-Q things. Mom wanted us all to be artists I think!! Thanks again!
SACBARB: I got the Barbie Bobbysoxer and Frank Sinatra set just a few years ago. I think it is my favorite!!
MEK: Congrats on 50 and 51!! ;)
WHABBEAR: Why am I not surprised?? :)
HI IBB!!!
Tinka---Sweet Tinka!!!
I am so sorry...
ZONA..No jell-O for you..
( I'll sheak you some later, don't let your mom see)..
I just can't help myself!!!
ZonaBaby - You are up and I am almost ready to go down for a nap. Why are we living different schedules when we are related? I will be over for Hamburgers. I love them with 'the works'.
Ibebold - It is selfish of me to deprive the rest of the nest your lovely jello shots just because two of my best friends and I won't mention their names again
left my little one all alone. I will be watching to make sure you don't sneak any to her. She is allergic to jello.
Zona - I treasure your mom's furniture and it fits so well with the Victorian doll house. Wait until you come and see it. I want you to stay away from Ibebold today. I know she is a lovely lady but she is going to offer you some jello and you know how you break out in hives if you eat it, especially the red kind.
ZONA - Great blog!!! I think the thing I most loved doing when I was a kid was coloring with my Mom. We would color for hours...and she never once complained. I had Barbie.....and her awesome Camper!!! We used to play Trouble, Perfection, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Uno, Go Fish, and the ever popular Old Maid!!! Being the oldest of 2 boys, I loved playing "school"!!! I also remember loving my Spirograph and Lite Brite!!!
WHABBY - Playing "doctor".....I about spit out my soda!!! lmfao!!!
BIRDEE - Congrats of first!!!
MEK - Happy Birthday.....did you get the cake I made for you?!!? Enjoy your special day.....make it AMAZING!!!

Lynn D - GO Cougars - I had not heard that - but I sure thought we did our best!!
EBJ - I had written that I hoped your delivery went well - then read that they found some damage - SO sorry to hear that - but better find it BEFORE the set it up - BUT - I totally feel your pain!! (((HUGS)))
Goldie - Congrats on 25 and thank you !!
Tinka - no special shoes today - still wore flip-flops in the rain - BUT - that marching thing really is PURE LUCK!!
SacBarb - I am AMAZED that none of us hung ourselves on those shoestrings with the key on it around our necks!! You really had to have GOOD sneakers for those roller skates!! and the tighter the better for the marks it would leave in our shoes!!
TInka - we made those creepy crawlers also!!
Barb in WA - Little Kittles - I had almost ALL of them - even had their little town, etc. - pretty scary..
WHABBY - LOL at playing Doctor - only YOU!!!! hugs and kisses!!!
IBB - thanks for the jello shots - I will SHARE - SO everyone DIG in!! guess that goes with the guys drinking beer every early this a.m.
Jodi - no cake from you..
BUT - I did JUST receive the perfect gift for the person that owns everything!!
IBB - even before I read the card - i thought this is PERFECT!!!
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!
My little sister baked me a pound cake - cost her a fortune to mail that sucker to me!!
BUT - these are the BEST!!
LOVE YOU!! can't wait to dig in!!
I forgot to say that I have three more Barbies, (well two Barbies and a Ken) that I bought myself as an adult. The two Barbies are dressed as Scarlett and the Ken is dressed as Rhett Butler. I am a huge Gone With The Wind fan and I have a collection of GWTW stuff. I was so excited when I found these at an antique/junk store in the town of Old Folsom. It is a wonderful little old west town only about three blocks long, with shops that sell old stuff, so I was really surprised when I found these because they aren't old. Turns out the guy selling them was mad cause his wife was cheating on him and they were her's, so he just brought them in that day to piss her off. I got lucky (get you minds out of the gutter).
Tinka: Yes, it is a different world now. It is sad that kids can't play outside like we did. I think they are missing out on so much. We had to use our imaginations to conjure up aliens and such. Now they have video games that do it for them.
Barb/WA: Did you watch that guy polish his rocks too???
Lynn D, EBJ, GOldie, Barb in WA, cpgem, scirish, amicus, VIG, Tinka, SacBarb, Glynis, Zona, IBB and Jodi....
Thank you SO much for the Happy Birthday wishes!!!
EBJ asked what is the plan today -
we went to breakfast - the weather kept us off the golf course (BUMMER) - I hadn't played IN forever!! Dinner will be early to beat the crowds on Friday nite.. haven't decided where yet - but we'll pick up mom - then go to her house for cake!! and that's about it..
I did stop at the scrapbook store that I can't stand to go to - (only cuz it's close) and she sent a 20% off total purchase for my birthday!! Sadly - since I do own it ALL - I couldn't do much damage with the coupon!! LOL
again - everyone - thank you!!!
Cpgem - this is the BEST place!!
thank you for making it for us all..

OK MEK I missed it, but congrats to you.
LynnD-- I remeber that ankle thing!!!
Scirish-- our elementary school had four square courts painted on the black top part of the playground!!! I loved that game!!
Amicus..wow.. I think Battle ship was my favorite game ever.. I had forgotten about that ... thanks...
VIG-- MEk had the Creepy Crawly things... they were sooo cool...
Zona Thanks for a great blog... and all the memories from everyone else....
Now - to the blog topic...
I had the first Barbie that ever came out - my mom still kicks herself for getting rid of that - guess it would be worth LOTS of dough these days!! i had Ken, SKipper, Midge - the whole bunch - had the Barbie car, condo thing - My mom even made clothes for them all!!!
Did anyone collect TROLLS - I had the little troll condo thing - little cars for them - in fact, when I was cleaning out my nightstand in prep for the new furniture - I discovered - I still have two of them!!! who knew!! LOL
I loved to jump rope , and yes, hula hoop - I was pretty good at it. but can't for the life of me do it now!!
LOVED candyland, operation and Pollyanna game - my Nana had like the first edition of that thing - man, was it OLD!!
I remember the slinky - we'd start at the top of the stairs and have it "walk" down!!
Gosh - I will keep thinking - you know - when you get OLD - LOL - your mind isn't as sharp!!
Zona - this is a GREAT topic -
80
Even though I wrote things down - I forgot to write them... LOL
Scirish - what IBB said about four square - there were even lines waiting to play during recess!!
OH - those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end!!! LA LA LA....
Jodi - I did get the chocolate milk and glaze donuts though!!
:-)
Jodi - LOL - NOW I know what you were talking about!! that cake thing is HILARIOUS!! thank you...
Just Lin - WOW - breaking News - I love it!!
you guys are GREAT!!!
AMICUS: I still have my Mickey Mouse watch too! And Click-Clacks!! OMG! My parents were so afraid we'd break a window!
JODI: My sister had the LightBright..and we always fought over it. What a great memeory you shared of coloring with your mom. {{HUGS}}
IBB: LOL!
TINKA: I will be the picture of sobriety...
SACBARB: You have KenClark..I have KenFrank..;)
MEK: Once again...Happy Birthday! :)
"Good Morning" everyone~
Birdee~ Congrats on 1st~
MEK~ Happy Birthday~
Zona~ Loved this blog...oh my gosh.....one summer, we got to choose ONE TOY.....I had wanted the Barbie airplane SO BAD.....so I got that....it was a real treat because there wasn't a lot of money......I brought it home and started to put the drink cart together........and I broke it! I cried and cried!!! Elmers didn't fix it! Without the drink cart, it just didn't work!!! I don't really remember playing with it after that! Isn't that pathetic?!!! I loved Candy Land and Monopoly! I really wanted Toss Across......we never got it~ I loved playing yahtzee, Chinese checkers, and Parcheesi....still do~ Thanks for a great blog~ :D
Scirish~ LOVED playing 4-square~ :)
OMG - we had those click-clack things also..
and Pogo sticks......
funny story about that -
we were living in military housing at Elgin AFB in Florida and the house had hard wood floors!! (setting this up)
My sister and I (yes, IBB) went "seeking" our Christmas presents that had been hidden very nicely away!! WELL, we hit the jackpot in the hall closet - POGO STICKS - we jumped on them all down the hallway and had a BLAST - mom came home from errands and just started SCREAMING A THE TOP OF HER LUNGS!!!!!!! we could NOT figure out HOW she knew we had found them - Cuz we put them back..
WELL, with every jump we took on those pogo sticks - we left a very nice little CIRCLE in the polishing of the hard wood floors!!
Needless to say - we got in a "little" bit of trouble!!
Thinking about it today - it's hilarious!!
Tina - thank you!!
SO - how sad about your Barbie Airplane! :-(
we also played chinese checkers and regular checkers - mostly when we were at my nana's house..
My dad's mom would ALWAYS cheat at the card game "Kings Corner" -
88
BarbWA: I forgot about Clue. LOVE that game!! Colonel Mustard in the library with the candlestick. ;)
That's as far as I got on reading comments while I inhaled a sandwich so I'll be later to catch up on the rest of them. :)
Mek - I had a collection of trolls. I used to keep them on my desk. The kids loved them.
When my kids were growing up our home was one of those "60's" split levels. We actually had 4 levels which meant 4 sets of stairs. I hated the stairs because anywhere you went in the house you had to climb 6 stairs. My kids loved them however as they were great for slinkies. They played with them by the hour.
Jodi - I would love to colour with my kids too. Then the child experts came up with the idea that colouring books harmed children's creativity and they seem to fall out of favour with everyone. There was nothing cuter than watching the kids laying flat on their tummies colouring by the fireplace. Ah memories.
Hey Mek, that was # 90. It is the luck of the Irish.
TINA - Yahtzee!!! That was the other thing we played A LOT of!!! Thanks for reminding me!!!
Amicus - I always wanted to be Miss Scarlet!! LOL
Tinka - I am SO happy that someone else had trolls - I would fix their hair - even had the ones that you stick on the end of a pencil!!
:-)
Jodi~ fun, huh? And thanks for the threesome last night~ REALLY...I think you'd be good! :)~

I'm off to make myself prettier for work~ :)~
Have a fun day MEK~
Hiiii again!
Well the furniture still isn't here! I got a call about 20 minutes ago from the driver. He said his radiator was leaking!
They are in Lafayette, which is about 30 miles from here.
I'm next on the schedule, so will keep on waiting! Geez.
The driver is waiting for another truck, so that means it has to drive from San Francisco to Lafayette, transfer the furniture, then drive out here.
At least it is still coming!
I'm loving this topic, what a fun idea!
Did anyone play teather ball? That was one of my favorite recess activities in grade school. I also liked 4-square and rollerskating (with a key, too!)
Bon'O: Thanks so much for the roller skate video. I really love that song. I will play it over and over.
Fantastic blog, Zona! 'Grats to the early Birdee!
Hula Hoops in every color, homemade stilts, jacks, pick up sticks, ping pong, paint by number sets (I can smell the little tubs of oil-based paint just thinking about it), musical jump ropes,Yahtzee and three dimensional TicTacToe. I tried hard to remember the first non-doll toy I ever had....I think it was a "one-eyed, one-horned flyin' Purple People Eater"! Anyone else old enough to remember that one? It was sort of an early Gumby flexible purple rubber character, circa 1958 following a popular novelty song of the same name. And, I think we had a card table set up with a jigsaw puzzle in some stage of completion throughout my entire childhood.
Hi everyone!
Congrats on 1st Birdee!
♪Happy Birthday Mek♪
Great blog Zona! Some games I remember are:
Cherry Ames Nursing game
Monopoly (my brother and I would sometimes have a game going for days)
Crokinole (mum and I still play this one occassionally)
Ant in the Pants
Don't Spill the Beans
Swingy Doll
Skipper (my sister had Barbie and Ken until my brother ripped Ken's head off. Dad put it back on with cement.)
Rockem Sockem Robots
Yahtzee (my mum still loves to play this game)
My next door neighbor always got the lastest games for Christmas so I spent a lot of my christmas breaks over there.
Shirley: We played Yahtzee too! And so many other familiar names from today's comments... Monopoly, Mouse Trap, Operation.
Anybody remember Green Ghost?
And how about Labyrinth? I was absolutely obsessed with it at one point, and got good enough to be able to move the marble forward through the route and then backward. As I remember, backward was much more difficult; you had to kind of "jump" the board at one point in the route to get the marble to leap right over the holes.
Later on, in college, my friends and I used to get stoned at night and play backgammon endlessly!
And then, in grad school, we got addicted to Galaga, the upright arcade video game.
LOVED Galaga!
Best to you today, MEK! Happy Birthday!
Bear - Rushing out. Will be back to read comments.
Mek - Yes my trolls always had well groomed hair. LOL
WHABBEAR: Absolutely POURING here! Love it! Green Ghost..just looked for that one today on YouTube..it was one of Mr. Z's faves but I don't remember it.
Galaga..another one of his favorites..how 'bout that! :)
SHIRLEY: Loved Rockem Sockem Robots..always got my block knocked off though!
LYNND: It was a lot of fun talking to you yesterday...dang you're funny! Mr. Z is thinking nunchaku may be in order too! ;)
TINKA: I still have my white haired troll! LOL!
Does anyone remember waiting for the Sears Christmas Catalog every year? It would come in the mail and we would each get a chance to look through the toys and write the order numbers down for which ones we wanted, then fold the page to make sure our parents saw each item!! Rarely did we get the things we selected, but it sure was fun!
Off to the store in the pouring rain..this is the life!!
Wow, all the games that where mentioned I remember so many of them,
yet this morning I could only think of the ones Zona mentioned!
I guess I was in a fog!
We have a Memorial Day BBQ at my house every Memorial Day about 30 people mostly family! So my mind was a list of things to do!
Thanks to all for the great memories...
MEK:
Sure hope you are enjoying you B'day! Have a piece of cake for me..And your very welcome, However without all of you, the Night Owl Blog would not be what it is!
Whabby:
I don't remember Galaga! I do remember getting stoned tho! Fun!
Shirley:
There you are, Glad you peeked your head in, we missed you!
Zona:
The sears catalog, How fun that was!
I was very lucky, I usually got all that I asked for! And played with everything endlessly!
Hi Gang!
In honor of MEK's Birthday I am going to have a lime beer in a bit!!
Vig: You may be right Bell hop! We had the creepy crawlies too! The game not cooties tho we did have the cooties game! Does that make sense! LOL
I see so many games that bring back memories!!
Boggle is still one of my favs and scrabble!
LMAO that Carol doesn't remember Whabbys game but remembers getting stoned!
MEK: Go to comcast.net and they have the cougar story it is pretty funny!
Wishing everyone a wonderful evening. Might be back after I have that beer!
Oh Zona we would get the Sears Catalog and would spend hours playing I pick. What is that???
Well we would sit on the couch and go page by page and pick our favorite thing on the page. This would take hours but it was great fun! Probably why I still love to get a catalog!
My step brothers and brother hated the ladies clothes pages. I still made them pick!!
Zona: My hubby and I got a brilliant idea and gave the kids the Sears Wish Book to make their Christmas list. Well, each one wrote about 10 binder pages of stuff. We cracked up (after they left the room) when we saw the lists and we gave them back and told them to put a star by the 10 most wanted items. Those are the ones that I gave to the grandparents and aunts/uncles. The following years we limited them to a certain number. They still talk about the first year they made their list. They thought they were sittin in tall clover and were really gonna score! LOL
Zona, wonderful blog, I just love it.
I'm going to give this a serious reply when the children go to bed. They are a little bit of a distration.
Happy B-day MEK!
Zona - I remember waiting for the Christmas Wish Book to come in the mail. It was mostly toys. Now it is almost the same as the winter catalogue, big, thick and everything is in it. It isn't nearly as much fun now for the kids. You also don't get it here in the mail unless you ordered from the last catalogue.
Hello Hello Everyone....I am finally somewhat better to at least get on the computer for a few minutes.
I can't begin to thank each one of you for all the many get well messages, hugs, prayers, thoughts, phine calls, myspace comments, etc. You have ALL been such a wonderful support group. As I would wake up in the hospital--the first thing I would do was go to my phone and pull up the Owls Nest to see what all of you had been up too. You each kept me smiling, crying and for sure marching!!!
I also want to send out a special thank you to Zona for posting all this time for me. It was nice to be able to keep in touch and without Zona I wouldn't have been able too.
Again, thank you to each of you and btw Shirley, I sure loved your buffets when I was in the hospital!!
YOU ARE ALL A WONDERFUL GROUP OF SPECIAL FRIENDS (yes, I meant to yell it)!!!
Love, Dianne
Whabbear - We loved yahtzee and Monopoly. I don't recognize some of the games you mentioned. I bet you were a fun kid.
Zona - You seem to be in heaven with your rain. Most people cry if it rains on Memorial weekend because of the fireworks. I guess those people haven't endured the heat the way you have these past weeks.
# 140
Zona - I never had a white haired troll. That must be rare. We do have an original Barbie but it has been well played with.
Dianne - I just saw your post. I am so happy to see you are doing better. We really missed you.
Shirley - I am happy to see you here today as well. We missed you too.
ROFLMAO@Carol!
Tink: Thanks! I'll bet you were, too!
Zona: Hmmm... ask hubby if he played "War" with his friends when he was a kid! We did that for hours on end.
Dianne: Welcome back! It hasn't been the same without you.
Hey Dianne is back. Girl we missed you. I'm so glad you are feeling better. Now don't overdo and have a relapse.
Shirley: Good to see you posting again, too.
Bon'O: I remember that one-eyed one-horned purple people eater song and it's been in my head all day since I read your comment. Wasn't it Sheb Wooley that sang it?
it's just hanging out there

Whoo Hoo!!!!! Dianne is in the house! I'm so glad to see your owl soaring over us again. Get well and stay well!!!
Good to see Shirley made an appearance today.
Birdee Congrats on first today. I never get tired of seeing your chickenowl.
MEK Glad to see the birthday girl claimed victory on the march to 100. Hope you are having a great day.
Zona This was a super blog and it's been alot of fun reading about everyone's favortie games.
I used to love my Easy Bake Oven. I would have had mine sometime in the mid 50's and it worked well. I loved frosting the little cakes and also liked to make popovers. I had one of the first Barbies and she was more exotic looking then. Hell, she was French! My mother was a great seamstress and made lots of great outfits for my Barbie.
My best friend's dad made us skateboards before you could buy them commercially, by using our metal skates and a board. We'd have a great time soaring down the empty outdoor corriders of our grade school during the summer.
My brother is 5 years younger but as we got older we got very competative with board games and card games. We still are with games like Yahtzee. After I graduated from high school I started working for the gas company. As soon as I would get home from work, my brother and I would play ping pong. We would have ongoing "tournaments" that would last for weeks on end. Oh, yeah, we got pretty darn competative.
Loved to play Four Square at school, too.

Answer to today's blog-
Playdoh Fuzzy Pumper Barber &Beauty shop
Game-Pay Day
Charlie Angel's dolls
Donnie & Marie dolls
My bedroom when I was little was all in Raggedy Ann
Fisher Price Play Family Boat & House
Fisher Price Record Player
Lite Bright
Etch a Sketch
Simon
I had a fridge, oven, sink, and table that I played with hours.
I was a highly imaginative child. I played with my toys by myself for hours on end. My little sister would only play with toys, if I was there. She had no idea how to play by herself.
I forgot about my Tiny Tears doll. I used to play with her for hours. I could feed her with a bottle and she would wet her pants and cry tears. I had a wooden doll crib for her. One night I ran down the hall into my dark room, doing a giant ballet leap onto my bed. The trouble is, I forgot we rearranged my room that day and I landed on the doll bed, smashing it to smithereens. I still have my Tiny Tears doll.
DIANNE!! There you are!! Great to see you. And you know it was my pleasure to post for you.
CPGEM: We probably would have gotten more of what we wrote down from the catalog if we didn't choose something on every page!
EBJ: I played tetherball..or maybe it played ME!
LYNND: LOL @ you still making your brothers pick..!!!
TINA: You know I'm gonna be looking for that plane AND cart for you now...along with some other things..;)
SACBARB: All kids must be the same, cuz we chose just like your children did! "I want it all..." LOL!!
WHABBEAR: Mr. Z wants to know if you mean War the card game or War like in Combat?? He played the latter. He says they also played S.W.A.T.!!! OOOOOO HONDO!! LOL!
TINKA: I am loving the rain. I think maybe my Troll is just old. ;)
J/LIN: I was such a good skateboard rider!! How we balanced on those things I'll never know.
TINA: Shush. ;)
ITEACH: Simon was one of my all time faves.
Just_Lin: What a visual that conjured up. I literally laughed out loud. Sorry you smashed the doll bed, and I hope you didn't hurt yourself. And sorry for laughing, but I just couldn't help it.
SacBarb~~Yes it was Sheb Wooley. I was surprised to find it on YouTube from a hundred years ago. Sounds just as pathetic now as it did then! Hard to believe it was a Billboard #1 song. Glad you enjoyed the 'Brand New Key' video.
Dianne~~Thanks for the mail, and it's good to see you posting again. You've been missed here. I was afraid during yesterday's tornado that maybe your OZ MS page had come to life for you!
Iteach~~Thanks for the Simon memory! I think I played with my daughter's more than she did! I love that more owlettes remember the 'good old' toys and games more than the Atari/Nintendo video games.
I was never much into dolls, but did love my Betsy Wetsy!
Although I can't bear Larry King, it's interesting watching the IDOL top ten. Bless little "Archie", it's a good thing he can sing, as he hasn't quite mastered talking yet.
SacBarb It makes me laugh to think about it now. I'm sure it did hurt but mostly hurt my pride plus, I was quite upset about breaking the doll bed. It was wooden so I'm probably lucky I didn't get impaled on one of the crib bars. That thought makes me laugh all over again.
Zona I would probably break a hip if I tried to skateboard now.
Iteach - Your toys were very similar to those of my kids. They loved their lite brite and etch a sketch. I still have them here.
Just_Lin - We had Tiny Tears dolls too with little beds. I loved playing dolls with my daughters.
We would tuck them in for the night in their little nighties.
Babies don't wear little nighties any more. They have little onesies. I loved the nighties and the little booties that would always slip off. Every one expecting a baby would get at least 4 outfits with the booties, sweater and bonnet to match. Now babies come home from the hospital wearing little baseball caps. Babies have changed just like toys have changed.
Zona - I am expecting company so I may not be back on tonight. If they leave early I will be on to say Good Night. I loved your blog today. Nothing gets me more excited than toys.
Mek - I hope you have had a fun day.

I haven't read all the posts yet. I'm typing as fast as my chubbie little fingers can, before I get knocked off!
My favorite toy was this huge doll with long blond hair. Oh yes & my tea set. I played for hours under our big maple tree. I made a lot of mud pies.Later my favorite thing to do was ice skating. I could skate for hours.
