Ahh, those teen years~

by Zona

I was on the phone with Jodi last November as she drove her daughter and her friend to the opening f the movie 'Twilight'. I could hear the excitement in Jodi's fourteen year old daughter's voice as she talked about seeing the movie. When Jodi put her on the phone....I just had to smile...the enthusiasm just bubbled out of her. Her laugh was infectious. I saw the same kind of joy and boundless energy when I met Tina's daughter.
She smiled and laughed so easily...and her eyes just sparkled. I started to think back on how I was at this age...twelve..thirteen....fourteen. I remember walking through the mall with my friends, watching the boys go by....dissolving into giggles if they even looked our way. Or having my friends over to spend the night..laughing so much my dad had to knock on the wall to quiet us down...which, of course, just made us laugh more. Then there were the football games, where we cheered until we lost our voices.
When our older friends got their driver's licenses...we would all pile into their cars and cruise by the varsity athlete's houses...speeding away, screaming, if they happened to be outside. I know too, there were times that I never thought I would survive. The heartache of my first
taste of unrequited love, the embarrassment of the zit that popped up on the end of my nose right before my first high school dance. Such drama. What do you remember about your early teen years? What were they like? What were you like??

Morning Glories!

Zona very good blog! I was always working! I had some fun but mostly hung out with people out of school as I worked with them. I remember a couple of dances and some parties. Mostly felt the need to get out of school and move on. Hmmm I was and always have been a person who never belonged to one group kind of floated around. Always hated it when someone seemed left out and would home in on them and try to make them feel welcome. Weird it all seems like another lifetime now.

I did have a group of friends from high school that I was very fond of but have lost touch. Most of them were boys. LOL A couple of girlfriends. I do remember we laughed alot when we got together and occasionally got into trouble but were rarely caught.

Morning Jodi! Waving madly back at you too!

Hey y'all!! I'm alive! lol

My brothers made the big move to California to pursue their music career!! I miss them SO much, but they are having a blast!!

When they left, they took the laptop that I had the nest bookmarked on lol..Then I remembered I had put the link in it's own folder on my yahoo email account in case this happened again lol

I was also sick all last weekend when they left...I think stress got the best of me!

I have a lot of catching up to do around here!

Congrats on 1st Tina! I hope everyone's doing good!!

Happy Birthday EBJ!:)

A great blog entry Zona! I was finding myself as all teens do....I realized I was gay at a young age, and was struggling to accept it let alone figuring out how to tell people!

I have fond memories of highschool with football games, pep rally's and hanging with friends after school! I was very involved in extra curricular activities too..I was Vice President of the school and was in FBLA(future business leaders of America) I also remember spending the night with my best friend! Fun times!:)

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Good morning, Bebbi, Lynn D, and Jodi!

Tina: As I just posted in A51 to Jodi, your swish is my command! LOL!

Zona: Many, many memories come flooding back!

An infamous party my sister and I had when I was 14 and she was 15, and my parents went out for the evening! I got drunk for the first time in my life, and made an utter ass of myself. I dropped a beer bottle that smashed on the floor, then stepped on a piece of glass with my bare foot. I still have the scar to this day!

Long after I had passed out, my parents arrived home, only to notice an acrid smell coming from the den. Somebody had dropped a cigarette but onto our green sofa, and it was smoldering, about to burst into flame!

Talk about irresponsibility! Oh, My!

Other strong memories:

My first ("self-induced", natch!) orgasm. OMG was that ever overwhelming!

And, of course, the dismay and horror that accompanied my first realization that I was sexually attracted to men.

But that is a whole other story...

Jodi said...

WHABBY!!! Luv your swish is my command!!! Only you.....:O)

JOEY - Good to see you!!

I also had a very full plate. Marching band, plays, musicals, swing choir, pep band....but had a blast!!! Especially the "after" parties. :O)

Good morning Tina, Bebbi, Lynn_D, Jodi, Joey, Whabbear, MEK and all who fly in later!!!

I'm going to need a sofa if I'm going to spill about my teen years. LOL! Kidding! I remember many of the same things. The giggling, oh that was by far the best!!!

I have a girlfriend of 20ish years. One night...a couple of years ago, we had a sleepover. Made her husband sleep on the couch so we could have the bed. We giggled all night (until 5 am!) and he kept banging on the wall just like Dad used to, which really got us going even more. Good times!

Good Morning Hooters!

Congrats on 1st Tina~ have a safe trip!

Jodi- I am so sorry about your friend (((HUGS))

I'm in on the necklace idea- where do I send my address?

Great blog Zona- I have wonderful memories of football games and the Roller Den on Sunday afternoons. Meeting up with friends at the Zesto for ice cream.

I also remember that I hated to be in charge of my bro and sis when my mom and dad both worked. At that time my mom was a waitress and my dad worked the bakery swing shifts. When I was twelve they built a new house and we moved into the newest subdivision in town- so that was cool.

Hope everyone is well (or better) today and I hope you have a good one.

Mr. Goldie brought me Starbucks cawfeeeeeee today- so I will be a hyped up by the time I am done with that!

Zona-my-baby - Another great blog. You must be in the lead by now. I hope you are feeling better. I have a full day of appointments so I can't stay long in the nest.
My teen-age years were wonderful. I had great friends, lots of romance and adventures. When we have our school reunions we talk non-stop for hours. I must rush off right now. I am going out to dinner so it's a full day. I hope the next thing I hear is that you are feeling better.

I'm a little behind the times. Haven't had time to visit lately. I read one post from a couple days ago about wonder drugs. Well. Let me tell you a little story...

I had a stroke in my 30's. There was no question that it was a stroke and I spent 4 days in a coma. When I came out of it, somebody thought it would be a good idea to give me Dilantin, which is an anti-seizure medication. I have been tested for seizure disorder several times and definitely DON'T have it. But I got the Dilantin anyway. I don't know why. Well, one of the side effects is psychosis.

I don't remember a thing about what happened. I'm told I ripped my IV out, spraying blood all over the room, tore the thermostat from the wall, then climbed into bed with some poor woman who had the misfortune of sharing a room with me.

So I have a certain aversion to drugs of any kind. I'm suspicious of doc doling out pills and get this.... Since I began refusing to take all these "stroke" medications, I'm healthy as a horse. Never felt better. I do wish though, that someone filmed me freaking out on Dilantin. Might have been entertaining.

Tina Congrats on #1. Have a safe trip! Don't let Eunice get wild and crazy. ;)

Zona Wonderful blog today! Mostly, I loved being a teenager. I lived in Southern California during all of my school years. There are great memories of slumber parties, cruising the hangouts, laughing, flirting, dating.

One of the funny things that happened was when my friends and I cut school late in our senior year. In the late morning, well after school had started for the day, we went to get donuts at the local donut shop. In walks the Principal! We were all known to him as we were involved in various pep squads. He just nodded and smiled at us and we never heard anything more about it. That was cool!

Just_Lin said...

Bonacci Welcome back. That must have been scary. I'm glad you are doing so well now.

bonachichi said...

Just Lin: Thanks for the well wishes. Although I'm somewhat agnostic, I think it was a blessing in disguise. My mother was "medicated" to death and the same could have happened to me. It wasn't until that particular episode when I realized I could say "no" to a doc writing a Rx. It's good to be me, without chemicals.

bonachichi said...

Now some happy news; Every year a mama duck nests on my street. She picks 1 of 3 houses, at random I think. The babies were born sometime within the last week and Mama set about getting her chicks to a nearby lake which the little ones can't get to because they can't fly.

It never fails. The chicks fall into a storm drain and Mama quacks for her fallen babies. Each year huz and I pull the cover off the storm drain and climb in, gathering all the little ones into a mesh bag.

I carry the bag of chicks with Mama close at my heels, and hop over a brick wall while huz drives the car to the main street I land on. Then I hold the bag out the window and Mama flys behind the car to the lake where we set the chicks free to be with their Mama again.

A happy ending and something I actually look forward to each spring.

Thank you for your blog ZONA. I have some silly memories of my teen years. I had a mature side to me, but also a rather juvenile side. One such example was when I hid my friend's purse in a cello case in the band shack. She had to go to the office and get permission to come and get me out of class to show her where I hid it. One time in orchestra I changed a note by playing a B instead of a B flat. The teacher corrected me, but I argued that it just didn't sound right to me. We went back and forth a few times, and then I was embarrassed and couldn't stop laughing , which made the whole thing worse.

ZONA - I didn't know you are sick. I hope you are feeling better.

Sandie said...

Congrats on first, Tina!

Zona, I remember those years well. I lived in a neighborhood of almost all boys my age. I was always sitting on my front porch with a dozen boys. I had a great time but it drove my parents crazy. LOL Of course, I think I went "steady" with just about every one of them!

I'll wear the necklace this week as I await addresses. (Or, as I said, if you don't want to give me your address, you can just give it to the person who will be mailing it to you when it's your turn.) I'll list them, as Carol said.

How about we mail it to the next person on the list on Mondays so people will have a weekend with it?

I have six addresses right now so I can list in the order I received them. Or, Tina can be next since it was her blog. Or Carol can be next since she's the "clasp." Just let me know.

The necklace is not anything to cry over if anything happened to it, so don't worry. It can be wiped off with a damp cloth.

ZONA: Fun blog today and thanks for writing it. I had an okay teenage life but I was so shy that I think it took away from the fun I could have been doing. I had my group of friends and the usual party and sleep-overs but I just wish I was as out-going then as I am now. I don't think I would want to go back to those years. On the other hand, I have two granddaughters that would give me away to be teenagers!!

TINA: Hope you have a good trip and are feeling better today.

JODI: I am sorry we keep missing each other. I am also sending my sympathy to you in the loss of your friend.

BONACCI: Wow, that would have been some scare with those meds. I hope you continue to be doing great!!!

ZONA: Sorry to hear you are sick. I hope you are getting better by the minute. Do you have the flu? I went to the dr today for a shot and the lady I sat next to told me I might not want to sit by her as she had the flu...I moved quickly!

Well, well LANI: It sounds like you were quite the teenager...I wonder if the teachers thought you were fun or they wanted to spank you with the old ruler?

Lani said...

MEK - I hope you are finally back to normal. I am having TUG withdrawals....anything new?

GOLDIE - The roller den sounds quite intriguing. Enjoy your cawffee.

NN/LL - Giggling was my #1.

CAROL - I am sure we will be hearing about giggling from you tonight.:)

TINK - You have a great day....it is still so good to see you back to big vibrant TINK.

SLIN - I am hoping your throat is better today.

BONACCI - It is good to see you again.

Hey hooters!

Happy Friday! I have today off, so we've been busy doing stuff here.

We just finished cleaning Poe's cage. We have to take it outside and scrub it once a month or so, I have to take out all his toys and stuff and everything gets cleaned good.

We are having a big gang over tomorrow for spaghetti dinner, so trying to get everything ready for that too.

I want to thank everyone for the birthday wishes and comments on Myspace, it was sooo nice of you all! I really appreciate it! :)

Zona, what a great topic today! I had fun teenage years. I got a horse for my 13th birthday, so up til age 16 or so my days before and after school, plus weekends, were filled with riding.

I had lots of friends with horses, so we would take off for all day rides, way up into the hills. No worries back then about being kidnapped or pedophiles, so I was allowed to be gone from dawn to dusk.

One time we were on a trail ride, and we came upon 3 vultures sitting on a log. I couldn't believe how huge they were! They don't look it on tv, or when you see them flying above, but they are really, really big.

Once I got my drivers license, I spent less time with the horse.

I met my best friend at age 16, most of our friends were older and back then, we could get into bars fairly easily.

We did lots of crazy stuff, things that make me shudder now.

I was not involved in anything related to school, as I hung with older people. I had an older guy I dated, so was happy to leave high school behind.

OK I need to read the comments, so I will be back!

Congrats on 1st again Tina!

Teen years.... Did anyone have "kidnap breakfasts"? Where people charge into your (parents) home and rip you from your bed. Then on to the next person's house until you have about 30 people at Denny's around 4:00-5:00 in the morning?

We went waterskiing at Castaic Lake (it's not far from where I live). None of the 8 or so teens was over 17 (I was 14) and we didn't have a place to sleep. So we pulled over to the side of the road. Some slept in the boat we were pulling, others slept on lawn chairs. We'd probably be murdered today, but it was fun then!

Just_Lin said...

Bonacci I love your duck story, too.

I've never heard of the breakfast kidnapping thing. Our coffee shops of choice in those days were Bob's Big Boy or Coffee Dan's, which was right in town.

Hi everyone!
Great blog Zona.
I had a wonderful teen life. I went to the same school all my life so I had many friends. We had skating parties, sock hops (I'm that old lol),
pep rallys, bon fires, hanging around the soda shops & A&W drive through.
I remember worrying myself sick because my Mother told me you could get preggy by kissing a boy lol!
I can still smell the Autumn leaves and the sounds of football & basketball games. Thanks for the memories Zona!

Tina,I hope you have a safe trip. Stay away from my slots lol!

MEK, are you rested up yet?

Jodi MUAH!!

EBJ, we had spaghetti tonight, good stuff!

Diane, I would have "hung with you in school". We would have been out detention by now lol!

Speaking of Dennys. I got this in my email today..
New breakfast at Denny's
You get fourteen eggs, no sausage, and the person next to you has to pay the bill!

bonachichi said...

Kidnap Breakfast: Let your kids (or grandkids do this). Call the parents of the kids on the kidnap list to get permission (very important!!) Tell them to leave the door unlocked on the planned night.

Only 1 or 2 will be the master planners. Everyone else will be a victim. Enter the house, pull the victim out of bed (hopefully they don't sleep nude like my sister did), then indoctronate them into your band of robed idiots - extra cars are a plus.

After you've kidnapped everyone (hopefully the moms and dads will have donated breakfast $$), go to any diner, cafe or whatever for breakfast.

My daughter did this with her church group after I told her about it and they're still talking about it.

We used to cruise 4th St. in San Rafael, it is where some scenes from "American Graffiti" was filmed.

A guy we knew had a yellow car just like the one in the movie, so he would drive us up and down the street.

And then we'd go to Round Table pizza and drink beer, they never checked IDs there!

Just_Lin said...

EBJ Congrats on 69!

A few times, my girlfriend and I would each tell our mothers we were spending the night at the other one's house, then cruise around or hang out at a coffee shop. We did that New Year's Eve, then walked the streets of Pasadena, along with thousands of others, many of which who brought sleeping bags, coolers, etc. Once the Rose Parade started, we'd go home.

Loved your blog today, loved hearing about the giggling, and the boy watching, and of course the pimple which must have created such drama..

I don't have many good memories of my teen yrs, I was not my own person back then, and just became a follower. I choose as my friends a not so nice crowd, and followed them wherever they went, me thinking they were my friends.. Silly me to think that!

Even If I knew what we were doing was wrong, I still did it cause I wanted to fit it. I really did not mean to be bad, I just did not know me, so I allowed myself to be them..

I have put those yrs behind me, and since then I have always promised myself, never to be someone else again..

I am me now, and it is a good feeling..

:O)

Congrats on first Tina (begrudgingly)

Jodi: I know..I got the car today and it is so nice. Those people were awesome. There were more coincidences when we got to talking too. She asked where my dad lives in Tennessee and I told her where he lived and how much we like to go to Pigeon Forge. She and her husband (G. Victor) honeymooned there and the car has been there several times!!!

Also, he was a "Big Brother" in Big Brothers/Big Sisters too. I found that out because I said I wasn't going to go to TN this weekend or next because I had Bowl for Kid's Sake with BB/BS.

Just wayyyyy tooo many coincidences for it not to have been some divine intervention.

ZONA-BABBBEEEEEEE! Awesome blog! You brought back so many fun memories. As y'all know some of my bestest friends are friends since we were in High School and Junior High. We did the typical teen stupid things...never really bad but maybe a little crazed! We certainly did laugh a lot and still do! I remember driving past Randy's house 1 million times a week and would have DIED if he ever actually saw me!! And we "belonged" to a group...The Section...that attended EVERY basketball game either home or away for the entire 3 years. I always sat in front of Randy, so I could lean back on his legs when we were sitting in the bleachers! As much as I "loved" him, our relationship never progressed passed sharing our sodas! We had gold t-shirts with black lettering as we were the Tigers! Such fun. Then pizza at LaRiches.

ZONA, I bet we would have been great friends had we gone to school together!

CAROL...I am glad you are you!

Had a really long and stressed day today, and I am fighting a cold, so I am off to bed.

See y'all tomorrow
