This Night Owl Blog has given so much! It is a fun place, we don't bash and we have fun being "tedious"! We offer advice, give love, lots of free food and an open forum which can be about anything that is important, thought provoking or just plain silly. And sometimes we just March (some to different drummers, but all together). :) It is not about a single person, it is about all the people on any given day blended together.....Goldie!

Joanie
My dearest friend Joanie, what a amazing person she was. She had such a zest for life. I knew her for only about 5 years, but it was the best 5 years I could have asked for.
She contracted AIDS from a old boyfriend who was a drug user, she lived with it for 8 years before the disease took her life, which was about 10 years ago. At the time, the cocktail or combination of drugs that are given out today, were not available to her. About 2 years before she died, she was diagnosed with tongue cancer, she chose to go the chemo/radiation route, as a operation would have required part of her tongue to be removed. She knew the odds, she knew that she might not be able to handle the chemo/radiation, but she would have rather taken her chances, then have part of her tongue removed, which would have affected her speech greatly.
I was with her every step of they way, I watched, I cared, I cried, I held her, it was the only thing I could do, as I could not cure her. She went thru the treatments like a trooper, still going to work and doing her daily activities. They said they got most of the cancer out, however her immune system was zero. She could not even fight the common cold. She eventually stopped eating and a feeding tube was put in place. In her last weeks her T cell count was 14, the normal T cell count is between 500 and 1600, I remember when she told me, we were in her hospital room in the bathroom, I was helping her get washed up. She looked me in in the face and gave me the dreaded news. No other words were spoken, I just hugged her, we both knew.
The AIDS lesions grew like wildflowers and planted themselves on her weak body, she could not fight them. So to soothe them, we used the aloe plant. She told me when the aloe touched her skin, she felt cool relief. She described the relief as it being a hot summer day in Brooklyn when she was little, and the kids turned the water hydrant on, she would run into the water, and the cool water gave her the relief she needed.
She passed peacefully, no more pain for her. She was finally able to rest.
I think of her often, actually everyday, the aloe plants sit in my office by the window and soak up the sun. She loved the sun, and so do the aloe plants.

Goldie you lucky Grandma you! Hope you all have a great time at the zoo today!
What a touching blog for so many reasons, Carol. You gave someone the gift of dignity and friendship. And she gave you the gift of self realization.
Oops. Good morning Hooters! Goldie, sounds like you're thoroughly enjoying the ankle biters. How long do you have them? Bebbi, I think congrats are in order for #1.

Bebbi ~ Congrats on first!
Lynndeeee....Sorry you're sick, Maybe a hot toddy is in order this evening?
Good morning everyone. I finally got caught up on my sleep!
Bebbi,congrats on 1-5!
Carol, what a lovely memory of your friendship with Joanie. I looked in the Dictionary under "true friend" and found.."some one like Carol/cpgem",unconditional love".
Bonacci, my Hubby lovingly calls them "curtain climbers".
LynnD, :( Hope you get to feeling better soon!
Goldie, Take your camera! Have a great Gra Ma day!
Jodi,Yay, your Daughter is better! Have a great Daddy Day. I am sure he is looking forward to being with you.
Hi Scirish!
I'm taking my sweet Niece Jaimie shopping for some job interviewing clothes and lunch. I haven't seen her since her mugging. She says she is doing fine, but Auntie Mary has to see for herself. I'm sure you can all understand that.
Carol, your aloe plant story reminded me of my plant. I still have part of the plant that was at my Mother's funeral over 24 years ago. I say "part" because it has almost died a zillion times, but keeps sprouting "babies" that I replant. It almost died out this winter, so I placed it closer to a sunny window and WALLAH! it has sprouted all over the place! My Mom was a tough cookie too!
I have to get cleaned up and out the door. Have a great everyone!
sorry for the novel :)
Have a GREAT day!!! lol I tripled checked for errors and still messed up!
ok, I am being ignored for the moment because of the new Dora video!
bonacci- The kids are here until Wed morning- I should be dead by then, but I will die with a smile on my face!
Mary, I have a plant that is from my Dad's funeral too. I look it and think of him, it makes me happy. I replanted it once in a bigger pot and it almost died, so I have left it alone ever since.
I kill most living things- a joke at our house is that I succeeded in raising 2 kids! So this plant is special and I think my dad is watching over it.
JODI- glad she is better. Have fun with your dad.
Lynn, get better!
Off to the shower for me. The rest of the adults are in charge now.
Mary ~ Have fun with your niece and I hope she is really doing ok....Btw...I was busy trying to figure out why Goldie should take her CAMEL...My eyes must not be awake.
EBJ...Keeping my fingers crossed for Paula.
Zona...Sorry I missed your anniversary...Did you go swimming?
Ok....I think it's going to be one of "those" days....I just brewed a pot of WATER...
Carol: I have one big aloe plant. I haven't been able to figure out how to get a start off of it. Do you know?
Good morning!
Wow, what a beautiful tribute to Joanie. I'm so glad I read that before I head off to work.
I have lost a close friend to breast cancer, unfortunately I did not get to spend time with her during her treatment.
We didn't live near each other, and she didn't tell anyone until it was way too late.
Iteach, I didn't get back on the blog last night to comment about your topic for the day, but I did look for robins yesterday!
Didn't see a robin, but lots of pigeons! Not quite the same :)
Jodi, glad your Sam is feeling better today!
Goldie I can only imagine how much fun you are having with your babies! I realized I had a huge smile on my face while I read your comment!
Scirish, thank you for mentioning Paula. She is AMAZING us, after 4 days on blood pressure medication, her sight has come back a little, and her eyes are not as dilated as they were over the weekend.
She is eating really good, purring again and jumping up onto the bed, just like she did before.
Thank you to everyone who have sent good wishes, it is working for her!
Gotta get ready for work, have a great day!
Bebbi congrats on 1st again!
Happy "SPRING" Friday!!!
cpgem - EXCELLENT BLOG - thank you So much for sharing.......

EBJ: Good news about Paula!
Bebbi: Congrats!
Carol: Wow, people we've lost to AIDS, what a topic! I arrived in the Bay Area in 1987, at the height of the second wave of dying, so many of them have been gone for 16 years or more. Your wonderful blog inspires me to raise a glass this afternoon to:
Winston Mathews
Bill Davis
Craig Davis
Ken Chan
Ken Wells
Cesar Casada
Jaime Espada
Kelly Rice
Robert Sissenstein
Dan Hartsuff
Bob Viereck
Tom Kelly
Lee McCoy
Gary Belcher-Hall
Gordon Brown
... as well as another glass to those who came within a hairs-breadth, but got the cocktails just in time:
Tom Morgan
Doug Allen
Paul Alley
Fred Alleman
Don Christie
Coincidently, I'm going to see Petula Clark at the Castro Theatre on Saturday night with, among others, Doug and Fred.
Carol, I love your stories. So heartbreaking and touching, your story about Joanie.
You could put the three aloes together in a large window box.
The other plant, I believe is called mother in-law's tongue, which incidentally I would love to hear you say with your cute accent. :)
Congratulations Bebbi #1 Hooter again!!
Three cheers for Paula and her nine lives!!!!
Have fun with your pops, Jodi! Glad the little one is on the mend.
Have a great day everyone!
Bebbi Good job getting 1 thru 5!
Carol I loved your blog today! So very special! It brought tears to my eyes, the tenderness and heartbreak. My good friend, Buddy, had AIDS and passed away 11 years ago. We were good friends for 45 years, ever since we were 6 yrs old.
I have lots of last minute things to get done today so will try to pop back in later.
MEK Congrats on 25 today!
Carol: LOTS OF YELLOW~
And hooray for Auntie Jo too!
Bear: I raise my glass in honor of all your friends, to Joanie and to those friends of mine who passed thru my life as well. I wish for the day when we no longer have to raise a glass to anyone dying from this terrible disease.
Bebbi: Gratz on first and I am catching up to you on steps....
Jodi: Woot Woot on Sam feeling better.
Goldie: Have loads of fun with the keiki!
Aloha Kakaihiaka to Bonacci, Scirish, Mary, Lynn D, EBJ, MEK and Lois "Twat" Lane
Hi hooters,
It's lunch time and I can read the blog for a few minutes!
I too have lost friends from AIDS, I'd like to mention Nile, John, and Jim.
And to Scotty, one of my dearest friends, who was diagnosed over 20 years ago and is still alive and kickin and going to the nude beaches of Santa Cruz! He rocks!
I just spoke to MR. EBJ, he and his mom are out house-hunting again today. They just put in an offer, so hopefully this time she will get it!
I will be back later!
EBJ ~ Yay for Paula!!!!
Mary...Was your test to see what your muscles are doing??? I have been referred to a new Dr to discuss having a sEMG. Was that what you had? I go next week and have no idea if this is worthwhile.
EBJ I am so happy that Paula is getting some sight back. That's great news!
wow - everyone must be out enjoying SPRING!!!
oh - and another thing that makes us know that spring is here - the crawly things are out in FULL force, which brings out the lizards, and it just goes on and on!!!
:-)
howdy to Whabby and K'Girl and Lois
EBJ - glad to hear that paula is doing well........ we're having "the dinner" tonight!!
:-)
Just Lin - hope your kitty is well and SAFE TRAVELS TO YOU!!!
Also - spring brings Baseball - I LOVE Baseball.......
but - it also brings the dreaded "March Madness" of basketball - which messes with the tv schedule!!!!!!!
:-)
Dianne - I think the Broncos just need to trade Cutler - he is NOT acting like an adult!!
:-)
Ending the Al Michel's report!!
CAROL...what a lovely tribute to Joanie. I know that she is forever in your heart and watching over you and your business in the form of the aloe plants. Joanie's life was made richer and fuller by having you in it. You truly are an incredibly amazing friend.
JUST LIN...safe travels and enjoy the time with mom. Wish her a Happy Birthday from Ohio!
GOLDIE...if it is possible to see an ear to ear smile within a post, I see it in yours! Enjoy those babies...and Dora!
MEK...Good to have you back in the nest!
LYNNNNNN...tell that cold of yours to get lost, damnit! Feel better dear one.
MEK...I do imagine you will be cheering for the Cleveland State Vikings, right??? My alma mater!
Hiya Weenie!!
MEK and MO Thanks for the well wishes. Both old kitties are now boarding at the veterinary hospital while I'm away. At least they have each other to snuggle with. Of course, the 19 yr old is the dominatrix over the 17 1/2 yr old. LOL
We are supposed to have more rain coming tomorrow night. I hope it does hold off until then so I have a smooth flight in the morning.
j/lin:
A stress, turbulance, and foul weather flight is in your future.
Safe travels~
Happy Friday Owls.
I've been out bee-boppin' around all day and just got home a little while ago. I poured a glass of wine and sat down to read the blog. My audio is still silent on my computer, but I watched the video anyway.
Your plants are really thriving, Carol. And you wrote a very loving tribute to Joanie. You are truly a loyal and loving friend.
I am raising my glass to my cousin Vincent, whom we called Happy, who died of AIDS in 1986 and to Joanie and all those who died of AIDS.
k-girl: Could that be "FOWL" instead of "foul"..considering we are all Owls. :) Also, I have 13,116 steps today! What type of numbers are you doing, just so I can keep abreast of my competition!!
Bebbi, congrats on #1 again.
Goldie, I bet you had fun at the zoo with the babies.
LynnD, You have been sick too long. Maybe you can get a miracle drug from the doctor? or just pour yourself a super size adult beverage.
EBJ, Glad to hear Paula is doing better.
J/L, Safe travels to you and Happy Birthday to Mom.
Mo, I'll cheer for the Vikings!
Jodi, Glad to hear Sam is well and back to school.
Mary/MI, Your nieces are so lucky to have such a loving and generous Auntie.
MEK, I hope Tug doesn't bring you any critters.
Waving wildly at all the other Owls. I hope you all had a good day.
Bebbi:
Just started last week, but I am up around 9800 average. I am increasing by 500-600 steps every other day. So give me another week or so and I will truly be giving you a step for your money..lol. Not bad tho I thought.
Off to get ready to go out with some friends and see my friend premier some of her original music that will be on her upcoming CD.
Have a great night all~
Raising another glass to those who went before us....too soon~
EJB, I want to thank you for sharing your experience with Paula. I had a checkup today (HBP since I was 18 and 3 strokes in my 30's). It was discovered that my BP was "up" (190/132). I asked the doc if this could affect my eyesight, which has been deteriorating. The answer? YES! Because of you, I knew to ask if I'd see better when the BP came down (YES!) and I immediately accepted the new meds and will actually take them. Thanks for sharing your grief. It was of great help for me. I'm so glad to hear Paula is doing better. Thank you again, for sharing this.
Afternoon Owls! Well evening really.
I went to the doc today. Mr. Lynn D kept bitching at me. I do not have strep throat. I do not have bronchitis. I may have a sinus infection and my throat is very angry and irritated (hmmm just like the rest of me) so the conclusion was it is a cold! WTF? I knew that.
I did get some antibiotics for the sinuses so hopefully it will help kick the crap out of the cold (note sarcasm) for all of this I got a free anti germ spreading pack and had to wear a damn surgical mask the whole time I was at Group Death (actually called Group Health. Managed Care). They are so whimpy just because I was hacking and coughing I was a red alert on the danger scale. Geeeez
The positive was that no one wanted to sit next to me in the waiting area or when I went to their pharmacy to fill my prescription. I did wonder what the other people (patients) were carrying in with them that did not have to wear a mask. I was probably exposed to MRSA or some other dread disease. I kept the mask it might come in handy if I have to fly or ride a bus etc....
Um, Kgrl, sounds like you're wishing me a pretty rocky flight. LMAO!
50
Thanks, SacBarb. I wish I liked wine. It always sounds so nice.
LynnD That's what I had; a really read, angry, painful throat and sinus infection. I hope the antibiotics help you. I never did go to the doctor but I'm fine now.
k-girl: Awesome! :) It is fun to keep track, huh! :)
JustLin have a safe trip and a great time with your Mom!
I am going to hit the hay! I would whinny but my throat hurts to much!
Oh boy, what I long day I had..
I left my house @ 8:30a and got home @ 9:30p. My office was jumping all day, I never stopped typing, answering phones, chatting, writing.. etc etc etc.. I think however out of all of the above, I chatted the most.. What a shock.. :O)
I was suppose to meet my nephews and my SIL for dinner, but a client walked in at 7pm, so I could not meet them.. I was bummed, but also happy, as I got a booking..
Thanks to everyone who commented on my blog today. It was so nice of all of you to pay tribute to loved one who also died of AIDS. It was different back when Joanie was fighting the virus, as the odds were so slim. Now with all the research that has been done, many, many make it thru and live their life to the fullest. I so wish all of the ones that are gone had that chance, however without the ones that lost their lives we would have never know what a awful disease AIDS is. With all the lost lives, measures have now been taken to prevent many others of succumbing to the AIDS virus.
It is quite amazing how my aloe plant thrives. Just the the other day someone came into my office and asked if the aloe plants were for sale.. Of course I said no. And then sometimes ppl come in and ask if they can have some. I take a few stalks put them in a paper cup with water and give it to them, as Joanie was def a sharer, and so am I ..
I think this is long, I should have split it up.. Oh well..
:O)
Oh, and I did not proof read..
so here goes...
J/L,
Enjoy your time with your family, I will miss ya..
♥♥♥
Lynnd,
I hope you feel better soon, the meds should work on the infection. I wish they would invent something that would cure the common cold in a day. They have a one day yeast infection cure, so how hard can it be to cure the common cold..
Jodi,
Glad Sam is feeling better.. that is surly good news.. Yes, they are called Pots.. I do it all the time on vids, I always forgot what things are called.. How was the parent/teacher conf?
Jodi,
Forgot.. My Aunt Jo plant is doing well, next month I will have that plant a year, time goes so quickly..
Goldie,
Thank you so very much saying what you did, and I know, you would do the same...
Enjoy those grandbabies.. So Fun!
Lynnd,
Yes, Peace Lily, great name for a great plant, named after a great lady..
Thanks for taking notice..
Bonacci,
That is so great, that you learned that from EBJ, which made you a aware to ask the question.. Is is so great what we can learn from others.. I always say ask a question here as someone will know the answer..
Kudos to EBJ for sharing..
Bonacci Yes! Take the meds!
LynnD and Carol Thank you! I always have a good time when I go "home". Mom's making a turkey dinner this Sunday. I can hardly wait!
Bonacci,
She gave me so many gifts, there are just to many to count.. I am glad I was there for her...
J/L,
I will be there at 3p I love Turkey dinners..
so glad you showed up, I was starting to feel lonely..
:O)
Turtle,
I loved the "yellow", Enjoy your night 2nite..
Mek,
I agree... I hate "march madness" it totally messes up my TV schedule..
Mary,
I am so excited to know I was in the
dictionary under what you described, I always thought I was under "porn"
LOL...
Mek,
Put Tug out in the yard, she will get all the crawly things... LOL...
OMG, my last comment was 69..
Not so fun, when you don't know, kinda like when you dream it...
:O)
Hey hooters,
Bonacci I am so happy that you are taking your bp meds. Your bp is scary high...
I will be anxiously waiting to hear if your vision improves as your pressure is normalized!
Paula's dilated pupils are even smaller tonight. They are still quite big, but not "stoned looking" like she was over the weekend and Monday.
We can now see some pretty green eyes again, and we are thrilled she is doing so good.
JL have a safe trip, and have fun with your mama!
Carol I tried to watch the video and it says "no longer available". Is it just my computer?
Well, another blow to MR. EBJs mom, she didn't get the house she put an offer on today.
This house has been sitting over 2 months, the listing actually expired. It was re-listed last week and she thought for sure she'd get it today.
Well, someone else put in an all cash offer on it this morning, so it was gone right before my mother in law's offer.
It is so frustrating.
MR. EBJ and I are also unhappy about March Madness, we think they should show it on the sports channels, and not pre-empt Survivor!
Lynn D feel better soon, bronchitis is a bitch and not fun at all.
OK I will be back tomorrow, sweet dreams to everyone!
Oooooo congrats on 69 Carol! woohoo!
Thank you, EBJ!
I am just popping in briefly as I have been procrastinating on doing all the last minute things I have to do. Still need to pack. BBL
EBJ,
Thanks for being excited for me, at least someone was.. :O)
Sorry about your MIL house hunting, I am sure something will come up.
J/L..
Again, Enjoy!
I am off to bed.. see ya all tomorrow..
EBJ,
I checked the vid, its working for me...
Al Michel Report!!!
MO - YOUR team won - which means that your next game is against the AZ Wildcats!! Good Luck!!
End of Al Michel Report!!!
Just Lin - i ALWAYS wait until the last minute to pack - i seem to do better under stress!!
cpgem - sorry you missed dinner, but great about the booking..
MO - thanks.. :-)
