~ Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe ~

by Tina~in_ut

****We interrupt the Sunday Video blog to bring you a special in depth report. Your regularly scheduled crappy Sunday video will be back next week!****

When Disney built the first big hotel in Orlando, the Bishop sent a priest to say mass there. The second one was built, and another priest was sent....and so on. Well, the money that was collected at these masses was put aside until it could be decided what to do with it. Since the area grew and grew, it was decided that the money would be used to build a Basilica that could hold 2,000 people.

The church was next to the outlet stores that the hubby and I were giving all our money to, so when we were done shopping, we went over to check out the church, the museum, and the gift shop. The stained glass windows and stations of the cross were amazing. I loved the Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel as well as many of the statues.

We had about an hour til mass started, so we went to dinner and when we returned, there was a policeman in the middle of the road directing traffic. When we got into the parking lot, we passed a place set up for cabs (weird) and the parking lot was half full (we were 10 min early). I couldn't believe how many people were there. This church is mostly used by tourists. I have a lot of church going friends, but almost all of them skip church when they go on vacation, so I was shocked at how full the church was. There were so many families, not just the old folks. It was nice to see. I love going to new churches. Thanks for indulging me~

Seeing new places of worship are like finding new treasures. I loved visiting the old churches and synagogues in Italy. One host, different houses.

TINA...do the kids know when you'll be home so they have time to get rid of all the empty JD and beer bottles?

Hope you aren't in too much pain from your fall

Hoping all of you ailing owls are feeling better today

I'm going to an unveiling of a headstone this morning. Jewish people wait at least 6 months to erect a stone on a grave.

Then I am spending the day with Elaine.

Have a great day

Splat!!

Morning Maureen! You look lovely as usual!

Good Morning Maureen and Shirley. Are you two having coffee in the nest this morning? Maybe the lovely odour of the coffee will attract more owls. I just got up so maybe that is what happened to the other owls. Then again maybe they are at church.

Maureen - I love finding new churches too. We saw a lovely Catholic church in Northern Arizona. It was way up high and built into one of the red mountains. If I weren't so lazy I would get up and find the fridge magnet I got there. It has a picture of it and its name.
Zona, help me out here. You must know what church I mean.

I didn't know Jewish people waited six months to erect a stone. The fact that they unveil it is also an interesting fact that I did not know.

Hi Shirley - Has autumn come to the east coast yet? I saw the weather forecast and it looked pretty warm over there.

Thanks for the pictures Tina. I will visit that church if we ever get to Epcot.

Now that I am almost fully awake I think I will feed my babies. Be back later when more owls fly in.

Happy Sunday Owls.

Tina, I love going to new (for me) churches when I am on vacation. When I was in England and Scotland I went to churches that were over 500 years old. Amazing. I like to pick up the church bulletins and compare them to my church's. The Basilica is beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Maureen, I love when you share Jewish traditions with us. I grew up in L.A in a neighborhood where I was the only gentile and I regret that I never learned much about the Jewish religion. I had so many friends that would have shared traditions with me, had I only expressed an interest. Congrats on being the prettiest today,

Shirley, looks like you slept in today. You are the second prettiest today.

Tinka, I hope you are feeling well today.

I got up late today so I am going to the noon Mass. Have a good day everyone. BBL

Mary? Queen of the Universe? WTH is that about? And I see they have their limited edition "Michelangelo's Pieta" along with the Lady of Sorrows "free gift" with purchase!

And you can take home smaller versions that can be purchased in the gift shop....yeah...the gift shop is next door to the restaurant where they have a daily lunch special...
If you like lamb I'd get the number 1 plate...

"I've been washed in the blood of the"
Lamb Chops...served with mashed potatoes and gravy with which your waiter will do a little "parting of the Red Sea" skit...

Or if you is really hungry...get the...
Noahs Ark...is a sampler of pretty much everything...

and like most cafeterias you have a choice of getting a smaller portion on the "Mother Teresa" plate or go for the larger one...Sister Mary Elephant platter!

And at every table...not the usual crappy flowers or candle...you have an actual bush in a clay pot that they set on fire and if its not to busy Moses may even make an appearance at your table!!

This looks way better than
Six Flags Over Jesus...

MO I love when you kerplop and kerplink. You are so very lovely today. I, too, love it when you share some of your Jewish traditions with us. I hope your day is a lovely as you are.

Tina Thank you for the blog and the pretty pictures but I don't think our music videos are crappy. Okay, I was a little taken aback by the "Queen of the Universe" title. Is she really called that in the Bible? Makes me think she is wearing a Wonder Woman costume under those robes. I do realize that the Bible was written a tad earlier than the comic book, however.

Shirley You are quiet today. I hope you're feeling okay. I'm still not very perky.

Tinka I meant to ask you yesterday about your apple upside-down cake. I don't think I've ever heard of that before. I do like pineapple upside-down cake but haven't had it in years.

Michael You crack me up. I hope your humor is appreciated in the afterlife. ;)

SacBarb That is too bad that you didn't learn more from your Jewish friends and neighborts. As children, I guess we're more interested in who passed a note in class and other important stuff like that.

Did you know that when a family death occurs that Jews cover the mirrors in the house?

I wish I knew more Jewish people...we don't even rate a full time Rabbi here...of course there is a large Jewish population in Houston....I know a couple of families here...for 25 years now...Joseph and Marion Hymen...both New Yorkers....profs at Texas A&M...

Then of course theres Hedy Perlman...she is the boss of all the other Jews here! Not related to Itzhak....

ok...I have done a little research...Mary got a promotion in 1964. And you may have noticed the church's close proximity to nearby Cape Canaveral...the liftoff point for America's manned space program...

yep! You guessed it. She was shot into space for the duration of her reign...

This was the press release:

The Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all guilt of original sin, on the completion of her earthly sojourn, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory in a NASA space rocket, and exalted by the Lord as Queen of the universe, that she might be the more fully confimed to her Son, the Lord of lords and the conqueror of sin and death."

They kept it kinda of quite because they didn't want to be confused with the other religions that do space travel...you know...like the Scientology folks...

But I'm afraid the cats out of the bag now...or should I say the "Queen"...

Man this stuff is interesting...thanks Tina!!

Michael I guess that would be flying first class. Those stupid Nike wearing folk had to hitch a ride on a damn comet.

Just_Lin said...

did I hear a barking spider?

Maureen said...

WHABBY...why are you on the V-Din?

Only the Orthodox and maybe Conservative Jews cover the mirrors. Also, no showering, no make-up and wear the same black clothes, in which the collar or lapel are cut, for a week. There are hard stools brought to the home of the mourning that are sat on instead of comfy upholstered chairs.
The Reformed don't go that extreme. We get a black ribbon that is cut that we wear and can transfer to clean clothes each day.

The headstones do have a veil on them...hence the un-veiling

I forgot to mention that after Mary...Queen of the Universe is done reigning....or in the event that she can't fufill her duties...first runner up "Our Lady of Guadalupe" will step up....Mary will be released into orbit and will circle the planet for years before simply falling back to earth..
