Picnic Time!

by Iteach

Did you know that behind the owl’s nest just past the tall pine trees we have a picnic ground?

Yes, we do and I have been there a lot with my children.

It is the most beautiful park that I have ever laid eyes on. The grass is green and lush. The trees are tall and strong and they are fun to take a nap under. There is always a gentle breeze that makes the leaves dance and laugh. The sun is always smiling on us and the temperature hovers around 75 degrees on most days.

What is also unique about our picnic ground is that it is free of mosquitoes and allergies. I have no idea why, but I’m not going to question it.

Shirley will be sitting under the pavilion preparing all the wonderful picnic food. She always does a wonderful job.

There are numerous trails to walk with all your dogs. Please do remember to clean up their droppings.

VIG will be under the gazebo with her piano serenading us with light musical songs that will drift us off to an afternoon nap.

In the evening Whabby will provide star and planet stories around a campfire.

Please pull up a lawn chair and share with us your favorite parts about a picnic.

Hmmm favorite thing about a picnic...Well, there is the macaroni salad of course and the grilled hamburgers and the corn on the cob and....

I don't know why, but everything just seems to taste so good cooked and eaten outside.

I'm hungry!!!

scirish said...

Then there is badminton, horseshoes and a beanbag toss to work off all the food!

scirish said...

La Di Da, La, La La, Where IS everyone???

WAKE UP!! we have a picnic to go to!

scirish said...

Might as well....5!

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Morning Scirish! Congrats on 1-5! I'll play badminton with you, but go easy cuz I'm old!

scirish said...

Mornin Shirley aka badminton partner

Shouldn't you be cooking?

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Iteach what a wonderful idea! Your decription of the picnic area sound absolutely perfect, especially the no bugs part! Thank you for asking me to help with the food. I just hope there is enough (you know what Maureen is like...oink!oink!). I hope someone brings lawn darts.

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Scirish that's the thing about picnic food...it's already prepared, no cooking, just eating.

scirish said...

oh! I'll bring a croquet set! A nice gentle pastime for full tummies!

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

I do agree with you Scirish the food does taste better outside. I always found that no matter how much food you brought (which mum always said was enough for an army)you never took much back home with you,if any. It always got eaten.

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

I hope Tinka makes it to our picnic. Hellllllllooooooooo Tinka can you hear us. Want to play croquet with Scirish and me?

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Happy Birthday Joey!!!!!

scirish said...

When I lived in DE, we used to go to Assawomen State Park (yes, that really was the name) where they had stone pits with grates to cook on. Everything tasted so wonderful....

Wonder if I could build one in my backyard???

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

As long as there are no laws against open fires in your area I don't see why you couldn't.

Good morning scirish and shirley!!

Great idea iteach- a picnic sounds wonderful. I agree, the food is always better when you eat outside.

scirish said...

Whew! It is a sauna outside already..

Iteach's picnic place with 75 degrees and gentle breezes is sounding VERY good!

goldie said...

is there a little stream that we can stick our feet in at this lovely picnic park?

Good Morning Owls!

Iteach: What a fun idea! I have to work today, but I'll stop in at lunch for some fried chicken and potato salad. Yummy! :)

Joey: Happy Birthday!!!

I saw Mamma Mia! last night, and it was the most fun I've ever had at a movie theater. The movie has funny moments, but it was the audience who made the whole experience such a hoot.

Pierce Brosnan can't sing, and everyone was trying so hard not to laugh, but they couldn't help it. I think the "Bond, James Bond" memories added to the funny factor.

The movie has many flaws, but it didn't matter, because everyone was laughing and singing and having a blast! :)

I'm switching gears and seeing The Dark Knight tomorrow. It's an exciting weekend at the movies!

I'm off to work so a quick Hello to everyone! Have a fun picnic and a great day!

iteach said...

Joey, I just checked your myspace page. I just loved all your birthday comments, very beautiful & touching (I really enjoyed all the naked men)!

Happy Birthday to you!!!!

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning Owls. I am repeating the same three words to find out how much difference in time it took me to write them on my new Mac Book and to say them down here. The difference was about 20 minutes. I am still not comfortable using the Mac Book yet. VIG says I will love it once I am used to used to it.

iteach said...

Goldie- Could you please pick three dozen ears of sweetcorn?

I don't know about Wisconsin, but in Illinois the corn has been picked. We ate some last night and it was too yummy.

iteach said...

Amicus, I'm so glad you had a great time at the movies.

My friend Rhonda and I are going to see Momma Mia tomorrow!

Tinkatia said...

Good Morning Scirish, (First again), Shirley, Goldie and Zonababy. I believe Iteach wrote the blog so I am going to read it before I read the comments.

sacBarb said...

Good morning Owls. What a great start to our weekend, a picnic in a perfect park. Iteach, I love your blog and thanks for arranging all the fun.

Scirish, I love your new owl. I'll challenge you and Shirley in the next badminton match.

Goldie & Zona, While I'm waiting for the badminton game, I'll join you in the stream.

Tinka, I hope your new toy is working well for you. We will expect to see you on the night shift soon.

Amicus, don't work too hard today so you can come back and play.

I am going to my step-granddaughter's 20th birthday party soon, so I will be back later. Have a good time everyone.

I am dropping off a fresh blackberry cobbler and some whipped cream. Now I am going to go find the perfect spot for my blanket and pillows! Oooooh I think I see a wonderful shade tree by the water!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOEY!!!

Iteach: What a fantastic Idea!

goldie said...

Hmm, I don't know about the corn, but I'll try. That whole "knee high by the 4th of July" didn't work out- but I'll check on it today! Damn flooding...

goldie said...

Oh, and I will bring REAL butter too- since our picnic is calorie free.

sacBarb said...

Scirish, I forgot to send you congrats on being the early bird today. I hope all is still going well with the sale of the house.

sacBarb said...

Hey Lynn. Maybe later I can share your blanket???

Happy Birthday Joey. I hope you can join us at the picnic, before you go off to celebrate.

Lynn D said...

Sacbarb: You can share my blanket anytime!

Goldie: Yes Real butter! Can you see me drooling from there! LOL

Tinkatia said...

Happy Birthday Joey. Have a great day.

What a lovely blog Iteach. It speaks of peace and contentment. A picnic is a good place to go when one feels stressed. To me a picnic is always on the ocean. We have lakes here but the smell of the ocean and the sound of the waves is a wondrous thing. I love packing the picnic basket and filling up the coolers. The preparation for a picnic is almost as much fun as the outing. My favourite part of a picnic is watching the little kids at play. Before I had children that's when I was the most envious of parents. To watch the little ones building sand castles and bringing tiny buckets of water up from the sea over and over again. By the time they got to their sand mansion there would be very little water left in their pails. Then to watch the mothers dry the little ones off and put warm clothing on them so they could eat their lunch - oh I was so jealous. After I had my own little children I discovered having little ones at the beach wasn't as perfect as it looked. Trying to keep two eyes on three children at all times was a little difficult. Getting the sand from all the crevices of their little bodies also took some talent. Ah but the memories of picnics. There is nothing that compares as favourably. Packing up to go home and putting three little exhausted but happy children back in the car are memories I will always treasure.

Tinkatia said...

SacBarb - I think it's going to take a while before I become a Night Owl with my little Mac Book. Trying to control that little cursor with my finger and scrolling with two fingers is not as easy as it looks. I will be a Night Owl lurker however. I have the Mac Book right by my bed. VIG is coming over this afternoon to give me some tips.

AMICUS: The Dark Knight is excellent!!! I couldn't take my eyes off the screen!!

There is a little town near Sacramento called Lodi (yes, of the song fame) with a beautiful little park. For many years my Hubby's family hosted a picnic for all the people who moved to California from their small town in Oklahoma. It was dubbed 'the Okie Picnic'

It was such a fun time for me because people brought all kinds of food I had never even heard of and I introduced them to some Italian dishes they had never tried.

The horse shoe tournament was always a big event. The park also had a small zoo and an area with kiddie rides. So, the kids were not bored and everyone was happy.

The Okie Picnic was always held the first Sunday after July 4th and no invitations were necessary. Everyone was welcome and guests were encouraged. People brought pictures of new babies and other family members who couldn't attend.

I haven't thought about those good times for years. Thanks Iteach for bringing back those good memories.

SacBarb triggered a memory for me too!

Mr. Lynn D's family had a mini family reunion when my youngest daughter was about a year old.

We all met at Brown's Point in Tacoma WA at a wonderful park that had a beach right down to the water.

Everyone brought a favorite dish and there was plenty of wonderful food.

I even remember what I was wearing a peach colored camp shirt with white polka dots and white shorts. I ended up with all the kids and we had a marvelous day of playing in the water and looking for creatures with napping and eating in between.

It was one of those sunny crystal days that will stay with me forever.

Tinkatia said...

Thank you to those who said they missed me. It was a long two days. I couldn't live without my computer. At the moment I could live without my Mac Book but I believe VIG and others who have told me, I will feel differently in about a week. They say I will love it. I will tell you in a week if that is true. Actually I already know it is true.

Tango and Tia have just found out we are going to go to a picnic. I must start packing. I hope they behave themselves. Tia gets a little overwhelmed by other dogs but she is getting better.

Oh what a perfect day has been planned for all of us courtesy of Iteach and our own chef and party planner extrordinaire, Shirley! Be sure to count me and Laurie in, although Miss Laurie will have to leave early for her "date" to see Grease! but I will stay!!

Let's see, I thought about bringing cobbler too, I have a super dooper easy recipe given to me by a wonderful lady named Daisy! Very delicious. Hey there are are lots of us, two cobblers are perfect!!

Iteach, you do have a way with words. Of course you do, you are a teacher!

I can actually see myself lounging in a hammock under a large shade tree, ice cool drink in one hand, a book in the other, and an umbrella to ward off another onslaught of "unsuspecting" squirts from a a certain suspicious looking woman named Shirley, going incognito as a chef!

Packing my picnic basket as we speak! See you in just a minute!

I have so enjoyed reading of everyone's memories of their family reunion picnics.

When I was little and lived in Southern California they had an Iowa State Reunion every year someplace in LA. People who migrated to California from the Hawkeye State, would all meet and bring lots of yummy food, and you would meet people who knew people who knew people you knew, or were third cousins on Uncle Claude's side twice removed, and treated you just like their own. It was lots of fun. I wonder if they still have it?

Now, I must get Laurie up and awake for our little jaunt to the Owls Nest Picnic! See you all in a bit!

Welcome back Tinka!! My daughter Amanda just loves her Mac. She said it just takes a bit of time to get used to it, but she would not go back to PC now. But, that's all I know, my Dell works just fine for me!

Oh and Joey what a perfect day for you!!! You are just a young pup at , gasp, 38! Just come and have a blast and bring your brothers and Aunt too, would love to meet them!

Peace, Donna Jean

Hello to all my Owl Friends,

Happy Birthday Joey!!!

iteach, what a wonderful idea to have a picnic. I've missed everyone so much because I've just been so busy. But now, I've traded my big girl panties in for my hip huggers and ready to play again.

Shirley, you do know how to feed us all so well....yummy!

I've taken my sandles off and lovin the feel of the grass on my toes. What a neat private park we have...who knew this was back here? lol

What a wonderful fantasy, complete with the cool temperatures.

Once again, just a warm 'Hello' to all my friends and please come join me on my quilt for some catch-up time.

By the way, I'll pass on the wet t-shirt contest, wouldn't want everyone to leave early.

Ahhhh....Summertime, and the livin' is easy.

Iteach~~Sorry it took me so long to get here! We had a marine layer of fog move in this morning for a bit, and I had to wait for it to get warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt. Then, as we were sneaking in, Shirley drenched us with the SuperSoaker!

I'm SO glad I brought along all the tunes from my MS Summertime Playlist. Listened to it while drying out on my blanket and catching up on what I've missed so far. Perfect picnic accompaniment! But, I heard VIG playing a keyboard over here and couldn't resist any longer. Brought my harmonica, hoping for a 'Hootenanny' later.

Oh, and p.s.~~~I hope everyone else brought their pj's and a toothbrush! I asked Iteach last night if we could make it a sleep-over and she said YES!!

more in a bit~~~I need to fill my first plate with goodies!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOEY!!

(just a couple things while I pick the yummy sweet corn out of my teeth)

Amicus~~Wishing I'd gone to Mamma Mia! with you yesterday! We went to an afternoon showing, and the audience was largely silent. I could hardly stay in my seat through Dancing Queen, and SO wanted to applaud after a couple fun moments. But, Pierce Brosnan was even worse than I expected! I couldn't watch...kept trying to think who I'd have cast in his role~~~they really should have asked us first! ~~ :-)

Area 51:

Bear~~Missed your great blog yesterday, but caught up last night and enjoyed my night sky even more!

Iteach~~Back to School here is still like the 'good ol' days! The first day is the Tuesday after Labor Day for Elementary through H.S. Freshmen, Wednesday for Sophomores-Seniors.

Be back in a bit...I'm going for a walk along the stream, trying to find where that sweet hemp-y aroma is coming from. Anyone want to come with?

Anonymous said...

Cool! Our pikanick (Lynn-D, doncha just love Yogibear?!) party hootenanny band consists of a piano and a fabulous piano tunner (thank you, Mr.Depp), Tink with her yuke and guitar and Bono on the harmonica. Oh, I can bring my djmebe (African drum). Are you hearing banjos, Jodi? And other instruments (I mean the musical kind!) out there?

Anonymous said...

Oops....that should be ANY other musical instruments out there.

Bon'O said...

Hey VIG! I also brought my kalimba (thumb piano)to play along with your djmebe. Let's jam!

This picnic area reminds me so much of the locale of our last big family reunion picnic at Silver Falls State Park...the walks along the stream, the open fields for games, the smell of sunshine filtered through a pine forest, the shade provided by the huge open stone pavilion for cooking and dish washing, complete with tables for card-playing and telling tall tales of times past, with clanging horseshoe ringers and laughter providing background 'music'. What fun! And the best part, having videos to enjoy it all again and again.

Just_Lin said...

iteach What a wonderful idea! Thank you for organizing this picnic. Shirley Thanks for all the wonderful food. You've done a marvelous job.

Sorry I didn't get here earlier. I'm wondering why so many of you are so wet! I do have extra towels in my car for those who may need one. Anyway, I'm late because I convinced the driver of an ice cream truck to come on over here. It's my treat everybody! He's got popsicles, drumsticks, fudgesicles, 50-50 bars, rockets, push-ups, ice cream sandwiches, Dove bars. You name it, he's got it!

I have errands to run but I'll be back later.

IBB: Wish you could stop by, just for a second or two!

BIRDEE: OUCH!!! I think your aim was off!!

ITEACH: How do you spike a watermelon?? Oh wait..I remember..;)

RGIRL: GREAT to see you!!! Can I come sit on your quilt for a while? BIRDEE soaked my blanket...

VIG: Dang..I was gonna play the drums!!

J/LIN: I'll take a Push-up!!

HI BON'O!! HI JENNIFER!

iteach said...

Oh, J/L, thank you!

I will have a drumstick.

goldie said...

Alright- who hit me in the back of the head with that water balloon??

Corn turned out good after all and I think the brownies and the spiked *hic* watermelon are a success to. Been a long time since I filled one of those puppies up with vodka- brought back some interesting memories of my younger daya-LOL

Hey are we playing horseshoes yet? I'm in if we are.

goldie said...

Joey- we have a frisbee but you will have to share it with Pepper and Nikki. Just wipe off the dog drool...

iteach said...

I'm going to hide under Ronnie's quilt now!

iteach said...

I can hear the clinging of the horseshoes in my head right now.

RonnieGirl said...

Thank you J/L. Let me see, I believe I'll have an Eskimo Pie.

I'm sitting here just laughing and stuffing the goodies in.

Hi Zona~I'd love to share my dry quilt with you. Let me tell you about that Birdee. You just think her water-soaker was filled with water. She's been known to fill it with beer too. So next time, just open your mouth and chug away.

So good to see everyone, isn't it?

iteach said...

Bonnie I thought you could take us all for a hike later. :)

RonnieGirl said...

Hey, Goldie...nothing like a bunch of drinkers throwing horseshoes. I'm just hoping they know the difference from water balloons and those heavy things.

This quilt reminds me of making 'tents' when we were kids. Scooch in iteach and hide here if you want....I have cookies.

iteach said...

I absolutely loved making tents when I was little.

I should try that neat childhood memory tomorrow with my own children.

However, for today, just you guys!

RonnieGirl said...

Did someone say 'hike'? Sorry, I'm not breaking a sweat today. Maybe a walk in our private stream and gather river rocks, but no sweating.

iteach, did you book some fire-flys to come out later? I hope so, because I haven't seen any in years. Maybe we could catch some and put them in mayyonaise jars so we could have them beside our beds.

Bon'O said...

RonnieGirl~~So glad you could come. Kick back and relax. It's been a while.

Iteach~~Want me to lead the way to the skinnydipping pool at the foot of the waterfall? I was saving that for a refreshing treat after the heat after the late afternoon. Of course, we'll have to sober up from eating all the watermelon first!

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

***Surrounded by water balloons, super soaker and several other water gun i wonder...***

Gee how come no one wants to sit on my blanket? Oh, I see more targets...I mean people coming to the picnic. (he!he!he!) I wonder where Iteach went?

Hey Vig what songs do you know?

whabbear said...

Slowly coming to, flat on my back. Where am I? Who are all these women? Why is one of them hovering over me, greatly concerned?

Starting to remember... some kind of picnic. Way too high on jello shots, spiked watermelon, and brownies. Got broadsided by unknown projectile. All wet.

Running through mind... don't know from where... vacuum cleaners... someone from Wisconsin... replies to blog comments... saw it, yes...

Still a little shaky... hoping things firm up presently... now hearing... something about whore's shoes... gotta get up...

Bon'O said...

....after the heat OF the late afternoon. (See, too much watermelon!) and...

(Amicus, the "..." is for you and any others who've seen Mamma Mia!)

RonnieGirl said...

Hi Bonnie and Shirley.

Listen here...I'm not, I repeat NOT getting nekkid in the sunshine with you ladies. You all do not meet the physical, if you know what I mean.

Shirley, do ya think it's because of all the water on your blanket? I walked over there a while ago and it was like a soaked Pamper. If you promise to not squirt me, you can sit over here.

Bon'O said...

For Bear~~ (compliments of Eric Burdon & WAR):

I was once out strolling one very hot summer's day
When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest
in a big field of tall grass
I lay there in the sun and felt it caressing my face

And I fell asleep and dreamed
I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie
And that I was the star of the movie
This really blew my mind, the fact that me,
an overfed, long-haired leaping gnome
should be the star of a Hollywood movie

But there I was, I was taken to a place, the hall of the mountain kings
I stood high upon a mountain top, naked to the world
In front of every kind of girl, there was
black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones...

Out of the middle came a lady
She whispered in my ear something crazy
She said:

Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

I thought to myself what could that mean
Am I going crazy or is this just a dream
Now, wait a minute
I know I'm lying in a field of grass somewhere
so it's all in my head
and then.. I heard her say one more time:

Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

I could feel hot flames of fire roaring at my back
As she disappeared, but soon she returned
In her hand was a bottle of wine, in the other, a glass
She poured some of the wine from the bottle into the glass
And raised it to her lips
And just before she drank it, she said:

[sung:]
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

goldie said...

Whabby- I have my whore shoes strapped on and am ready to go!!

Ronnie, I play my best shoes when drinking. I have a trophy to show for it too!!

Did I mention that I have fresh blueberries, blackberries and Hagen Daas vanilla ice cream- AND wild blueberry syrup. So.. when we sober up we are having some ice cream!!!!!!

RonnieGirl said...

Shirley~I think Lovey fell asleep in her lawnchair in her cute little red and white bikini. You might want to share some squirts her way...just don't get her hair or make-up wet.

RonnieGirl said...

Shoot~ forget the Eskimo Pie, I'll have Goldies Hagan Daas ice cream.
Thank you Goldie. I guess when all the goodies are gone, I'll just need to be ROLLED to my car

Goldie~I loved horse shoes. Did you ever play Washers? Same thing, but there's a hole in the ground that you toss the giant washer in.

Ronnie- you bet and I the bean bag ones too- same principle.

My best horeshoe moment was in a tournament some years ago, my partner and I (random selection) played an pair of macho male idiots. My partner Charlie was a great guy.
Anyway, it was neck and neck. Then the guy I was shooting against threw a 6-pack. That would have ended the game. He stood there pumping his arm and doing his best "beat that bitch" macho dog impression. Well- I threw a 6 pack on top of his. The crowd went F**** nuts!!!! I blew him a kiss.

My partner turned around and threw a ringer which they didn't top- so we won the championship.
The asshole slunk away and was so upset he was beat by a woman! Rates as one of my all time great F**k you moments!!!!!!!

I just woke from my nap under the shady tree to find my dogs all wet. Were they playing games with Shirley? They look happy but I think I should get revenge for them. First though I want to eat some of that delicious food. What shall I try first?

RonnieGirl said...

Great iteach. When I was a kid, we caught them and put them in jars with holes punched in the top. When it got time for bed, my Mother would let us put them on our nighttables and they would always blink their lights as we were falling asleep.

Something must have happened to them over the years because I hardly ever see them anymore, and it was very few times that I was able to do this with my children.

Btw, skinny dipping is an absolute freedom. There's nothing like it. You have just got to do it sometime.

Hi Iteach!

I thought this song by Chicago would be appropriate for a wonderful day like today, we just need to substitute 19th of July!!:

Saturday in the park,
I think it was the Fourth of July
Saturday in the park,
I think it was the Fourth of July
People dancing, people laughing,
A man selling ice cream
Singing Italian songs
Can you dig it (yes, I can)
And I've been waiting such a long time
For Saturday

Saturday in the park
You'd think it was the Fourth of July
Saturday in the park
You'd think it was the Fourth of July
People talking, really smiling
A man playing guitar
Singing for us all
Will you help him change the world
Can you dig it (yes, I can)
And I've been waiting such a long time
For today

Slow motion riders fly the colours of the day
A bronze man still can tell stories his own way
Listen children all is not lost, all is not lost, oh no, no,

Funny days in the park,
Every day's the Fourth of July
Funny days in the park,
Every day's the Fourth of July
People reaching, people touching,
A real celebration
Waiting for us all,
If we want it, really want it
Can you dig it (yes, I can),
And I've been waiting such a long time
For the day

Just_Lin said...

Shirley Wiffle ball is like baseball but the ball is plastic with holes in it so it can't be hit too far.

Would anybody like an ice cold beer?

iteach said...

Yes, J/L I would love a beer, I'm going to sneak it in with me to the movies.

I'm going to leave the picnic just for a little bit to go to the movies with my hubby.

I will be back later tonight for skinny dipping, more beer, ghost stores, and smores!

Zona said...

J/LIN: Thank you...I would LOVE a cold beer...SWAK!!

EBJ: Fireworks...very cool!! Just don't let one hit my bare skinny dipping butt...;)

RonnieGirl said...

J/L~ I dug down through all the ice in your beer cooler and found a Corona and fresh limes. Girl, you DO know how to ice-down drinks. Thanks.

iteach~Enjoy the movie! Oh, I love ghost stories...just not that one about the hook on the car door. Well, that's really not a ghost story, but more like a scarey one about two lovers in a car with fogged-up windows.

Have you ever noticed when you tell ghost stories, you always have to put in there....."and thennnnnn"..."gotcha". Love 'em.
