Marching Band....A Full Circle

My Brother Dale

In Memory of Dale A. Halverson

by Jodi

In 5th grade I wanted to play clarinet, but because I had 3 years of piano lessons, they talked me into playing French Horn. I ended up loving the French Horn. Not only did I have an "ear" for it, I also love that it is the same "voice" as I sing in choir (roughly an alto). I almost quit band in 8th grade, but my friend Dana Ames told me that Mr. Spiwak was going to put me, a lowly freshman, in the Concert Band, bypassing the Symphonic Band where most freshmen and sophomores ended up. I was up for the challenge and decided to give the marching band a try.

In the summer of 1980, I joined the Oregon High School Marching Band, thus beginning an incredible adventure for the entire Halverson Family. Truth be told, I was more than a bit nervous. How was I going to remember 10 minutes of music and drill? Well, I did it!!! And I loved it!!!

Marching band to me is more satisfying than any sport that I had ever participated in......there are no "bench warmers" and everyone is important.....all part of a giant, intricate puzzle. I learned more about teamwork, self esteem, and hard work than in any other activity that I have ever participated in! AND, although I was a "band geek", TRUST ME, we knew how to party harder than any other group in school!

The next summer my brother Eric joined, and in the summer of 1982, my baby brother Dale started the program. The three of us had the best time!!! I loved it when, after our warm-up on the field, our fans would shout "OREGON KILL GRASS!!!".....just their little way of saying Oregon kick ass!!! We also were blessed with parents that got involved. My Mom and Dad not only chaperoned many trips, they were involved in the Band Boosters and eventually became Co-Presidents of that group. Most kids I know would be appalled if their parents were anywhere close by, but we loved having our Mom and Dad involved. I loved that they were there for us. They eventually became known as Ma and Pa Halverson to everyone.

Every summer, when we went to the Championships, the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, the top Corps stationed in Washington D.C., also known as The Commandant’s Own, always performed in exhibition. This is where Dale felt his calling. He wanted to be on the Snare Drum Line of their group. My brother Dale took his music career to the next level. After graduating from Oregon Sr. High in 1986, he joined the United States Marine Corps. After he graduated from the School of Music in June 1988, he had a 10 day leave before he was to report in D.C. for his appointment in The Commandant’s Own. My parents and my Grandma traveled to Norfolk, VA for his graduation from the School of Music. They were so proud of him. We all were. He had achieved his dream! Sadly, my brother was on his way home on that leave, when he fell asleep at the wheel in Ohio and crashed head-on into a van. He was killed instantly. We were devastated. Dale had just turned 20 less than two months earlier.....and now he was gone.

My nephew James in his uniform and marching baritone

The following summer, my parents decided that they wanted to do something to honor my brother. At the Parade of Bands, the “big” Oregon High School competition, the best percussion line is given the Dale A. Halverson Memorial Best Percussion Trophy. My brother Eric's son, James, is now in the same Oregon High School Marching Band. I'm thrilled that a second generation of Halverson's are back at it.....learning new music, drill, and "killing grass"!!! Sunday night was our home show and it has now come full circle......my nephew James Dale Halverson.......presented the Dale A. Halverson Memorial Best Percussion Trophy to The Sound of Sun Prairie. Today is the anniversary of when Dale died. I can't believe that my brother has been gone 20 years. I’d like to think that he was there on Sunday night.......and was screaming "Oregon Kill Grass" just like the rest of us!!!

Jodi what an excellent tribute to your brother! Great job! I bet you nephew was real proud to give out the Dale A. Halverson Memorial Best Precussion Trophy this year. Death anniversaries are always difficult. So just let the emotions and memories flow. I'd love to read more stories about your brother. ((((HUGS))))

Jodi: I've seen Dale mentioned here before, but I didn't know you have a brother who passed away at a young age. I'm so sorry for you and your family's loss. How wonderful that your family's love of music is being passed down to another generation though. Big {{HUGS}} for you today and thanks for sharing a beautiful and heart touching tribute to Dale.

Hello, Owls! Good day wishes for everyone!

JODI- I already knew the story, knew the blog was coming and yet it still made me cry. I know how much you loved Dale and how proud you were and are of him, your family and the Oregon Kill Grass tradition! What a fabulous tribute.

Mr. Goldie lost an older brother(he was 12 brother was 19 who also was in the service and in a car accident while on leave before shipping out to Vietnam)and I know how hard that anniversary is for him yet, to this day.
When we talked about music and something that sticks with you- he still can't stand to listen to taps play.

Good morning Hooters and congrats on 1st g/m!

I am going to go catch up on my voicemails- shhhh, don't tell anyone that I ignored some yesterday....

Thank you so much for sharing.
Dale still is very much alive and will continue to be with you daily.
There is no doubt he is marching along with that band and at every event watching with a big smile on his face.
What brought me to tears was the family paying tribute in a way that will last forever, the "Dale A. Halverson Memorial Best Percussion Trophy".

Good Morning Grandma Moses (Congrats on 1st), VIG, Lynn, Ronnie girl, Iteach, Shirley, Amicus, Scirish, Barbara, Goldie, Lovey, and Sacbarb.

Jodi - My heart goes out to you today. I already woke up very sad this morning as it is 20 years almost to the hour that my husband decided (after 25 years of what I considered a very happy marriage), he wanted more out of life than our family could give him and he left. It is also two years ago this month and we learned we were going to lose my sister. Then I read your story and I can hardly see the screen. How tragic to lose such a wonderful brother when he was so young. You have told me this story but to read about it brings it all the more real. You wrote such a beautiful tribute to him. You must make copies of it and give it to family members. They will treasure it and you. I am going to church this morning. I will light 3 candles when I get there. I know Dale's light will shine brightly. I don't know your parents but I feel as if I do. Give them a hug from me when you see them. Now I think I am off to bed for a good cry. The world is usually so beautiful. Why does there have to be such sadness in it as well? Love, Tinka.

MEK in AZ said...

Tinka - that is a very good question - WHY does there have to be so much sadness??!!

Grandma Moses - congrats on FIRST.

Good Morning, GM, VIG, Lynn D, Ronnie, Iteach, Shirley, Amicus, Scirish, Barb in WA, Goldie, Lovey (welcome back, EBJ, SacBarb, and Tinka!! and everyone else that lands today!!

I'm having lunch with a friend I haven't seen in five years - so I am looking forward to that.....

Need to get to some household chores!!

JODI: The blog you have written today is absolutely beautiful. It's a tribute not only to your brother Dale, but to your entire family. The love and support that you give one another is not only apparent, but truly wonderful. I am so glad there is a Memorial Trophy given out in Dale's name each year..a trophy that celebrates excellence in something he and your family have loved so much, Marching Band and music.

...and JODI...I knew a lot of people in high school that were in Marching Band. They were always smiling and laughing, and they worked their butts off drilling and rehearsing in all kinds of weather, to entertain all of us in the stands. Oh, and yes, they sure did know how to party. Great blog..love you. Swak.

Jodi!!! I LOVE your blog!!! It brought tears to my eyes as well!!! I too knew a lot of the story, but not entirely. I think that is wonderful that your family created the memorial trophy! I now understand why you were so touched to see your nephew marching the other day!!! I agree with Tink that you should make copies and give it to your family members. I feel so touched that you shared this with us all.

I was a band geek too (but in jr. high). I didn't continue in high school, but I did join the color guard for a year and marched with the band. (I played the Flute). My sister played the French Horn too! She was a band geek too!

There is something about "artistic" people knowing how to party! At our local community college, I was a music major (voice) and we also could party hard (however, not as hard as the theater department! They were notorious for their parties)!

Grandma Moses: Congrats on being first!

VIG: Glad to see you in the running and coming in second!

Morning to Lynn D, Ronnie, Iteach, Shirley, Amicus, Scirish, BarbWa, Goldie, Lovey, EBJ, MEK, Tink, and Zona!!!

Tink: My heart goes out to you too. I am sorry you have had so much tragedy in your life! I feel for you about your husband too. I'm sorry it is still so painful (but I do relate). It just isn't fair!

I will lite candles for both you and Jodi! (I have a special prayer corner in my house that I lite them). My Polish friend also got me into saying the Devine Mercy. I find it to be healing. (He also gave me a beautiful print of it from Poland). Even though my faith has been battered, I still try....

HUGS to you ALL!!!

Good morning Zona. Are you up early or still????

Well, Owls, the AT&T guy is here and he said there is something wrong with my phone line. No sh!t Sherlock!!! I have no dial tone!! Anyway, at least he's here. Now if he can just fix it....

Iteach & Jennifer: Your town was the top news on the Today Show this morning. I[m so glad they captured that guy so you can breathe easier (and sleep too).

Jodi: Thanks so much for sharing your brother with us. I still haven't gotten through the whole blog and now I have to wait until the AT&T guy leaves. I don't want to be sobbing while he is here.

Morning Bon! Thanks! Yes, it has been surreal. Things like this don't happen in our towns! Even though we aren't far from Rockford and Chicago (where crime is very high) you just don't think that sort of thing will happen here!

I did finally get some needed sleep!

OK...I'm off!

Good Morning OwlsNest...

Jodi, thank you for telling us about your brother and the wonderful tradition that your family has continued on to another generation. What an awesome legacy!!

Tink~ There is a lot of sadness in the world, but without it we would not feel total joy. The sad moments give us the opportunity to dig down deep inside and find the strength to pull ourselves up again. There is also a lot of joy and good in the world and we can each find that every day if we only keep our eyes open. I KNOW you find joy because you always spread it!

Hope you Owls have a wonderful day!!

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Wow, so many Owls swooping in early today! Waving a wing to:

Grandma Moses (congrats on #1!!)VIG,
Lynn D, Ronniegirl, Iteach, Shirley, Amicus, Scirish,
Barb in WA, Goldie, Lovey, EBJ, SacBarb, MEK, Tinka/Pinka, Zona, Bebbi, and Bon'O! And of course to any others who have flown in while I am writing!

Oh Jodie~ What a touching, loving tribute you wrote of your brother, Dale. I could almost "hear" the band playing as I read your beautiful blog.

What a perfect way to honor Dale's memory with the Dale A. Halverson Memorial Best Percussion Trophy, and what an honor for his nephew to be able to present it. I can just imagine the feelings each of you were going through Sunday evening. My heart goes out to each and every one of your family. (((Hugs)))

I am sure that Dale would have "killed grass" when he played for the Marine Corps Commandant's Own. Dale sounds like he was an amazing young man, cut down way too early in life, like so many young, talented men and women.

I have absolutely NO music ability whatsoever! My daughter's cringe whenever I sing along on the radio!

Except for Laurie. She just loves it when we are driving and we find just the right song, and we both sing! It is amazing how much music ability Miss Laurie has! She knows almost every song, from oldies through the 80's up until now! And it can be anything from the BackStreet Boys to Carrie Underwood, she knows them all!!! And it is so funny, whenever ANY song comes on she will say "That is my favorite song"! So, I guess every song that was ever recorded is Laurie's favorite song!

Did anyone catch the video of the little 9 year old boy who sang "Ben" on America's Got Talent last night? I don't watch that show, but I did see the clip of him singing and I could hardly get through watching through all the tears. I didn't hear the judges comments, but from what I read, he is a little autistic boy who didn't talk until he was three. An amazing performance!!!

Well, we are finally scheduled for Laurie's MRI at UCSF for this coming Monday, July 7th! Yay!!! Shoot off some fireworks!!!

After we get the results, then it will just be a countdown until she has her surgery. I really thought that by this time she would have already had her surgery and we would be spending summer recouperating. Oh well, all in good time, I guess.

I will be busy today and tomorrow getting ready for my daughter Amanda from Sacramento and my little granddaughter, Emma's visit!

They are going to spend 2 days with me and Laurie, and I can hardly wait!! All you Grandma's out there know what I mean! Emma is now 20 months old and into everything, so I will be putting things up and out of reach from curious little hands, so we don't have to keep saying "No Don't Touch"! I just want her to be able to run through my house and have a fun time at Nonna's!

Till later, Peace and Love to All, DJ

So far, the smoke from Big Sur fire hasn't come this way. I am glad to have a break.

Shirley I haven't watched the video yet, but it may be one I'm thinking I saw several months ago.

Is it the one where the baby (water buffalo?) is attacked by lions, then falls into the water and is attacked by alligators?

If that is it, the guy who filmed it was on tv a while back and he said the baby walked off with the rest of the herd.

One lucky little guy!

I thought you guys would find the video interesting.

Sacbarb the other day I read 1465 fires were burning. Does this mean they are actually making some headway on these fires or do I have my facts wrong? Either way it's still a lot of fires. Stay inside. At least you have us to keep you company! ((HUGS))

By Jodi. (((HUGS))) for you too.

I don't like to be a complainer, BUT, I thought EBJ had found this terrific restaurant that makes great omelettes and she was going to buy us all one. I didn't get mine, did any else? Just wondering. Lol!

Good night!

Yes, EBJ that is the video. You can see the baby walk away. I thought the alligator pulled it's leg off but I guess it didn't. Amazing footage.

I am calling it a day and heading to bed early to watch a movie.

Mek, Jennifer, Glynis, Shirley and Tina - Thank you for the kind words today.

Zona - Thanks for the phone call today. It was great talking to you. You always make me feel better on a 'down' day.

Jodi - Thank you also for your phone call today. Your blog was great. Your mom and Dale are surely proud of you. Kudos.
Now get some sleep. You have to be at work in a few hours.
I forgot to tell you I lit the candle for Dale. God bless him and you.

VIG - Do you think it will rain Saturday? I hope not.

Good Night All. See you tomorrow. Love, Tinka

Once again Jodi thank you for the wonderful tribute to your brother. :)

I went to Wal-Mart tonight and stocked up on household needs. I'm going to try to go all the way until July 14th before I go again. I have been averaging two visits a week and spending too much money. I am anxious to see, if I can do it!

Have a fantastic time Carol!

Is anyone lucky enough to live where fireworks are allowed ONLY on the Fourth? It already sounds like a war zone here, and there are 'official' fireworks tonight at the Em's baseball game, every night through Saturday at the Pro Rodeo, Friday and Saturday at 'Art in the Vineyard' and the Olympic Trials. I don't actually mind the fireworks. It's the canine chorus after each blast scares the heck out of every dog in the neighborhood. Calgon please!

Glynis said...

Awwww Carol, when you have a hard time leaving your parents alone just imagine them wishing you would leave so they could run around and get frisky with each other.

Bon~ I have never been so happy to have a dog lose her hearing as I am on the 4th of July. Our 14 year old mutt used to claw us to death when she would hear those fireworks. Poor thing doesn't even know they are exploding anymore. Now I have to wait and see how it affects our puppy, Oliver. He will be 1 at the end of July so I think we are in for a few more years of calming the dog down on July 4th. Poor fur-babies!

Glynis said...

OK, just so I don't sound harsh or offend anyone...
I referred to our older dog as a mutt because she is mixed breed. Chessie is half black lab and half min-pin. Don't ask...we have no idea how that happens!

Oliver, the puppy, is full breed Border Collie. Not only will he hear the fireworks, but he would be able to chase it down before it lands, extinguish it and then read you the riot act on fire dangers. He is one smart dog!!

Bon'O said...

Glynis~I'm thinking an in-home spa day for lil Oliver, complete with soothing classical music :)

When tonight's started, the cats were inside but the patio door was open. They high-tailed it outside. Guess they thought the house was imploding!

Jodi: Reading your blog, I was so reminded of Joey's blog about his mother. You both gave us a glimpse of people, important in your lives, who are gone now, and without your writing, would never have entered our collective consciousness.

Such blogs are a gift. Thank you for the one today.

Hello All..I haven't had a chance to read comments yet today but I wanted to tell Jodi what a great tribute she has written about her brother today. You did a wonderful blog letting us all know Dale just a little more. My thoughts go out to you today and every day (but especially today).

I will go to bed now as it has been a long day and read the comments. I hope everyone is doing well and had a good day. Bebbi, I hope you are feeling better today.

WHABBY - Thank you.....as I said earlier, it was a blog that I really wanted to do. Thankfully I had a great editing team!!!

DIANNE-YOU'RE-A-SWEETHEART-IN-DENVER - Thank you and get some rest!! It was really great to talk to you this week. You always make me smile. :D

Hello, SacBarb! Are you keeping the home fires burning? How about you, DJ?

GROAN! Sorry... couldn't help myself! I'm writing this from my sis and bro-in-law's place in Toronto, so our beloved home state is (and seems) rather far away.

This afternoon Huz flies in, and we're off to a three day family celebration at a resort on Balsam Lake, near Lindsay, Ontario. I'm not sure there's any internet access up there, so:

Dianne: Hope your strength keeps returning.

Sleep: make sure you get some.

Shirley: I don't want you barefoot or pregnant, but please stay in the kitchen while I'm gone!

Glynis: ;)

East Bay: Can't wait for the BABB!

GM: Say hi to everybody in chat, and don't forget the birthday party next Wednesday!

MEK and Zona: Stay cool... somehow!

VIG: Waving to you across the Prairies!

Tinkatia: why all that sadness, indeed! Hugs to you...

Goldie: Don't ask, don't tell! LOL!

Amicus, Lynn D, Bon'O, Ronniegirl, Tina, iteach, scirish, Barb in WA, lovey, J/L, Jennifer, Bebbi, Mary in MI, IBB, and Carol: Have a GREAT 4th of July Weekend!
