by Lynn D
As we watch a new President being sworn in I am struck by his call for a Day of Service and a national call to service by all Americans to help move this country forward. Not just one day but to make it a part of our collective lives.
As you have read my posts on the blog these last few days you know that I have been trying to find help for the Alaska native villages who are in crisis right now. I don’t know why it has lit a fire under me as there are people struggling across America and the world. All I can say is that I heard this call for help and because I heard it I can’t just turn away. Even if I can only help in a small way, like spreading the word, sending a few dollars etc… It means I know and just can’t pretend I don’t. It means more to me that these are fellow American citizens who need my help.
Below are quotes that I read on an Alaskan blog that really has my brain in a whirl. The first one really shook me up. Why? I keep thinking is this the real attitude of America have we really reached the point that we can look at an area or region in our own country and say just let it die because economically they may night be as rich as the next area or region? Have we so displaced how we feel that we don’t want to see that people live here and have built lives here and oh well so sad to bad? Doesn’t letting it die imply that we should ignore the pleas for help and really let these people die? I just can’t fathom where this person is coming from. As bad as this post sounded to me the sad thing is I have read much worse on other blogs about this situation.
“If a place cannot sustain itself economically, it should be allowed to become extinct. Economic Darwinism has left ghost towns across the globe over the centuries and many of Alaska’s villages should be next.”
The post below was in response to the above post. This person is saying what I was thinking only in a more coherent manner.
“I’m not sure where you have been, but this crisis in the YD (Yukon Delta) is due to a perfect storm of poor fishing season, skyrocketing fuel prices when the villages needed to buy, and an early freeze. This is a case of people possibly dying- not whining for a hand out."
"And, if I understand your point, it’s ok if some YD (Yukon Delta) villagers die because they shouldn’t be there? And it was ok that people died in hurricane Katrina? Or the governor of Texas should not have sent assistance to storm victims? Or the governor of California should not have sent assistance to victims of the fires in California?”
In all of this I am beginning to realize for me that if we can’t help our fellow Americans and continually fight over policies and politics of any given situation then nothing gets done. How bleak is that?
So I am choosing not to let this keep me down .I just need to keep doing what I am doing in my small way one foot forward at a time and try not to ignore what is going on outside of my neighborhood or state or around our whole country. I may not be able to do anything grandiose but I can acknowledge that I see a problem and assess what if anything I can do. Sometimes it may just mean an extra prayer.
I am not perfect and really am uncomfortable when you tell me how wonderful I am when I do my volunteer work. I look at it as part of being in my community and I work no harder than anyone else at any job whether you make money or not that contributes to our society as a whole.
Can we move forward? Will it take all of us to make the difference? I think so, even if it is just acknowledging we see and hear you even if we don’t agree and taking the time to see the people and not just the problem.
Thank you for letting me get this off my brain and maybe I can now let it rest.

Good Morning!
Well..whattya know! Off to read the blog!
LYNND: Wow..what a powerful blog! I do believe there are a lot of people in this nation that need help. Mr. Z and I don't have a lot of money, but we do what we can to help those less fortunate than we are. I was raised to give this help without strings, without judgement and without talking too much about it. And that's what we do.
I'm very saddened to read that there are people in this world that can help those in need, wherever they may be..but choose to turn their backs instead. I've never understood this, and never will.
As you said..if all you can give is a prayer..then offer one. It could be worth more than gold.
Thank you for the thought provoking blog today, LYNND!

Morning Glories!
Zona got first!
Hope everyone has a wonderful day! I am off to the food bank and will be back later.
Hi MEK you AZ folks are up bright and early! Hope everyone is feeling ok.
Good Morning Hooters!
congrats on 1st Zona!! Hi MEK and Lynn.
Lynn, I think your wonderful with or without the work you do. :)
I think that was a great blog and that everyone needs to help in any way they can. Even if it one person by some small deed we did, it can make a difference.
I remember walking down MI avenue with my sister one night after dinner. We were carrying to go boxes. We saw a homeless man who asked for money. She asked him what he needed it for- he said food. She handed him her takeout, grabbed mine and did the same and gave him a 10.00 bill.
She made him promise to eat the food (he had already started) before he bought any booze. He smiled and called her a "wise lady".
I felt like we had just made someones life easier that night-no matter what the circumstances ended up being.
Mr. Goldie and give a little to every cause we can, and we do volunteer work too (not enough though). If everyone does 1 thing this will be a better world.
Morning!

to start your day! Perfect! dontca think.. :O)
Part 2 of my response
On MLK day the door bell rang and it was the girls 2 doors down. Their mom was out on the sidewalk with a wagon. They said they were collecting donations for Luke House ( it is a shelter downtown).
I loaded up a grocery bag for them and asked if this was a school project or why they were collecting. They responded that it was a Day of Service and this was how they were helping. I could have cried I was so moved at those young (10 & 12) year old girls.
Now if everyone had that attitude this country really would be a better place to live!
Lynnd,
I will be back to comment on your blog in a bit, I have to get my office up and running...
Hi Carol!!!
Zona!
Forgot...
Congrats on First thru Four..
:O)
Hi Goldie.. waving madly at ya!
ok.. gotta go...
One of my clients is freakin out that his ticket number ends in 666, so he wants to change the number, well the only way to change a ticket number is reissue the whole ticket, and charge the $150.00 pp reissue fee, so he has decided to make the change and then upgrade to First Class, so this is costing him $940.00 total for two.. Can you imagine..
Nice to have money to burn..
Morning Everyone!
Great blog Lynndeeeee! I had heard about the problems in Alaska a while ago, but did not know that they were ongoing. As far as the people on that blog, maybe they should be sent to Alaska to see how it feels!
I need to get ready for my doctors appt. I sure am getting tired of this. I spent yesterday in bed as I couldn't sit or stand. AND I got freakin stuck on the floor of Barnes and Noble the day before while trying to reach a magazine. Talk about embarrassing!!!

ok something is wrong when it is 49 degrees in Hawaii~

21 Good Morning Zona-my-baby. Congrats on first. It was great talking to you yesterday.
Good Morning Mek, Lynn, Goldie, Carol, Scirish and K-Girl. I hope this day finds you happy and healthy.
Scirish - I know what you mean to be sick of seeing doctors.
Tina - No my doctor is not what you would call HOT but he is such a good friend. I hope he never retires.
Lynn - Great blog. I believe in many days of service. I try to do my best but I think I could try harder. We all must "Pay it Forward".
Shirley - Does my #25 today count even though only the 2 printed?
K-Girl - I envy your weather. We have sun now but it's still cold in the mornings.
Waving at Mek, Goldie, Carol and all the owls to come. I will be back tomorrow morning. Have a great day.
Good morning owlettes!!!!
Zona Congrats on 1st!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Morning MEK...LynnD....Goldie.....Carol....Scirish....Kgrl...Tinka!!!!
What a day yesterday...I couldn't get on the internet between like 10:30am and 7PM... at work almost every time we went to fax something would get "all circuits are busy"....
there was so much cell phone and text usage in DC it affected us ...an hour away..
every time we send a package the program automatically updates the zip code info... usually takes about 2 seconds... it was taking up to 5 minutes sometimes, like around noon....
and how dare people come in at noon yesterday...we told them... we'll be with you in a minute.. and they could see the TV also... so they just stopped and watched with us...
breaking into 2 parts....
Thanks to all who sent me get well wishes. I will write as soon as the bright light from the computer becomes easier to watch. I am still typing with my eyes half closed.
I really appreciated the messages and comments. Love, Tinka
HI Ibebold. I just missed you.
My good mornings got cut off...
it should have had ... Kgrl and Tinka
I turned off the computer and then remembered I didn't tell Tina what a great blog she wrote yesterday.
VIG - I hope you are safely home. The roads are icy this morning. Take care.
Tink...Have you tried dimming your monitor??
LynnD.. on your blog...
When I was a member of the Eagles... we did sooo much good stuff for people... every hoilday we took care of a couple families... with everything from food to toys gifts... helping with bills...
we would have 2 big events a year ... to raise money for "our causes"...
we had so much fun and GREAT things came from it...
plus we would do little things all year long....
i miss it ...
SOOOOO....
I just became a team captian for our relay for life team.... we are in full steam ahead mode right now...
fund raising...
Carol: Sounds like you've had a "devil" of a morning! LOL!
Lynn D: Your blog deserves a thoughtful response. Later...
Zona: :)
Good morning!
Congrats on first Zona!!!
Lynn, I didn't realize there was such a problem in Alaska.
I agree that we should all give back in some way, whatever it may be. We do what we can too, to help causes the we support.
I used to volunteer for Project Open Hand, a group in SF that serves meals to people (at that time it was mostly people who had AIDS). It was so heartwarming to see the look on someone's face, just by bringing them a meal or a grocery bag of food, the most basic of needs.
Our weather has changed, MR. EBJ had to wear a jacket when he left for work this morning. It is chilly, I think our 70+ weather has left us for the time being.
Carol that is funny about your client who didn't like the 666 on his tickets! I guess if you are superstitious, you do what you have to do!
MR. EBJ found cherries at the gross=ry store the other day! I am not sure what country they came from, but they sure are good! Poe and I are enjoying the last of them this morning!
I'll be back later, hope everyone has a nice day today!
Happy Wednesday Owls.
I have recovered (I think) from the lack of sleep over the last 4 days. I woke up at 10am today. I am all showered and spiffed up and ready to face what's left of the day.
Lynn, I was not aware of the problems facing the people in Alaska. I guess I need to pay more attention to current events.
I do what I can to 'pay it forward' but I am sure there is so much more I can do. This was a very big topic over the weekend because one of my former classmates is the director of a women's shelter in Porterville. We all even picked up some trash along the beach on Monday to celebrate MLK day. Of course, we made a big joke out of it and that made it fun instead of a chore. I suppose that was irreverent, but we are old and entitled.
Thanks for your blog today and reminding me that I need to be more aware of the needs of those less fortunate.
Zona, congrats on #1. I hope Mr. Z is feeling better. Is AZ still celebrating?
MEK, how's the organizing coming along?
K-girl, I never knew the temp could get that low in HI. Did you have to get out your Chicago clothes?
Waving a wing to Goldie, Carol, Scirish (good luck at the Dr.), Tinka, IBB, Bear, EBJ, and all who fly in later.
I have errands to run. BBL
Hey gang thank you all for your comments on the blog. It was a way of clearing my head and trying to make sense of a situation that is so faceted and complex that I can not speak for these people. I just know that a call for help is usually shouted out in a dire situation.
There is a reporter that finally got through to the villages. The weather had been to bad before. More than likely a story will appear in the MSM after he gathers information.
I know everyone here is quite generous and you all do what you can. I have never doubted that. I was just in turmoil and shared my feelings and complex thoughts as this I think affects all of us in the long run.
I have a raging headache second day in a row. I think it may be because we have had very cold dry weather again. It did not help that is was a little chaotic at the food bank today as we have shifted everything getting ready for the walk in and we really had to make do to hand out just fresh food items today.
Going to hit the Ibuprofen and lay down a little bit.
So happy to hear Tinka and Sacbarb are feeling better.
Oh a plus seems the day of service is bringing in more volunteers for the foodbank! Yay! So I can thank Pres. Obama for that because we were in need of more helping hands.
45
I just woke from a two hour nap. I think it's just the winter doldrums that have me feeling sick.
Scirish - Thanks for the idea. I will dim the monitor instead of typing with my eyes half closed.
Hi Bear - How are you doing?
Now I can say I accomplished something today, making # 25 (even though the 5 was left off) and making # 50. Shirley does that give me a prize of maybe a diet Coke?
Hi, Tink! I'm just about to leave work and go home and take a nap myself. I woke up at 5:30 this morning and had to be in at 7, so I didn't get back to sleep.
Good afternoon everyone.
Thank you LYNN for your great post.
I look at this country and the world as the collective WE. I think we owe to our fellow human beings (and animals) respect and care.
It has been a while since I have given of my time in volunteer work. I give financially and written responses as of late.
Lately, since I am mostly retired, I have been thinking of volunteering at our skilled nursing facility again or even volunteering time at the the veterinary hospital.
One thing I know is that when I volunteer, I go in feeling like I will be helping and making things better for someone, and come out feeling like I have given something to myself and actually at times feeling healed.
TINK I am glad you are so much better.
SCIRISH I hope the doctor will help. So much pain is way to tiring.
HODI did you notice I was next to you today?
I'm so glad I stopped by!
L/D: This was a WONDERFUL blog!!!
Good evening feathered friends!
ZONAAAA...congrats on 1st!
LYNN...I am not going to tell you how special you are for the volunteer work you do (even though you are) so I am just going to say that your morals, ethics, compassion, empathy, caring, passion and zest for what is right is testimonial for the person you are. You are one special lady.
Guess what? We went an entire day without snow! I didn't have to scrape any ice off my car! The freeway actually moved at legal freeway speed! I was ecstatic!
dum di dum
Lynn,
I read your blog with envy, on how passionate you can be about something that is not effecting your daily (personal) life. I have said this before, I don't do much of anything as far as volunteering my time. I do try to donate as much as I can afford when asked to. I have and always will admire you for your passion of helping/caring for others.
It is very sad that America, can't help its own, I saw that with Katrina and in many other circumstances as well. They say we are the richest country, yet so many Americans have nothing, and have to fight for every dollar. It gets my goat when celebrities help other countries, and they help them with so much of their money. I know Oprah donates lots of money, but I never agreed with the school she built in South Africa, we need schools here in America. Her money should have been spent here in America. I was thrilled when Brad Pitt helped build up Katrina, good for him..
It is really very unfair..
I am glad writing todays blog, helped you, and I am in hopes your brain can rest a bit.
Kudos to you!

ZonaBaby Congrats on being #1 today! I'm glad you are out from under the bed!
Kgrl Excellent march, crawl, waddle, drag, creep, pull/push to 69!
Carol Don't sell yourself short! Bwahahaha!!!
LynnD An excellent blog today! I am woefully inadequate when it comes to volunteering time but I am generous with monetary donations. I know I should do more and perhaps I will get involved in a real physical way sometime soon.

Whabbear - Thanks for the comment. I think the last time I saw you in the nest, we (including Dianne) were heading for a massage. Where has the month gone? I feel like Rip Van Winkle.
Have a good night everyone. I am heading to bed. Love, Tinka
Hey everyone!
If you did not see Oprah today you will be disappointed JBJ was on and I totally love that man!
Lynn, CRAP, CRAP, CRAP! I was out all afternoon and didn't get home til almost 6:00. I should have TiVo'd Oprah today, but I thought for sure I would be home in time.
I'm going to find something for dinner now. BBL.
Lynn,
No I did not see Oprah, I usually don't watch her cause work gets in the way... however thanks for the heads up, I will look for it on youtube, I am sure someone will post it by tomorrow..
I just watched some of the neighborhood ball on youtube, OMG.. Beyonce blew me away, she was fantastic, and I think she is so very pretty.. Mariah needs to retire, what the heck happened to her voice, it is just not the same..
Alica Keys, did a great job, I think she is very talented...
Beyonce was my fav!!!!
I did not watch Aretha, I get very sad when I see her sing now, she has totally lost it, and it makes no sense to me why she is still singing..
And I did not like Shaikra (sp) at all. I think she is a "one hit wonder" :O)
I have a headache, clients stressed me out today, and then my dad stressed me 2nite, and now I am stressed watching Greta (fox) chat about the Anthony case, I feel so bad for Caylee, she was just a innocent beauty..
I think Casey did it, however I think it was a accident, and she tried to cover it up, I just have to hold on to the hope that Casey did not do it on purpose..
Going to watch Beyonce again, I think I can listen to her sing that song all nite...
I just took two aspirin..
Hi All!
Congrats on first Zona!
Glad to see you back Tink! VERY GLAD INDEED!! :)
I hope that everyone has been having a good day.
I have been studying very hard tonight. I am going to take my license exam for Real Estate tomorrow and I am so afraid of failing! It is paralyzing me!! I have not taken a test like this in years...and I mean YEARS!! I have been studying really hard. I just have to do my best.
I am SO AFRAID !!! I feel like I may have lost my brain completely. I sure hope I pass. And if I don't, I hope I don't have a break down.
*sigh* Wish me luck and say a prayer that my brain works tomorrow morning.

LynnD, Great blog!! I love your passion about helping the people. My daughter does Dare to Care food bank and she really believes in it. I volunteer as a Hospital Advocate for the Women's Center. This means I do runs to the hospital for domestic violence or sexual assault victims. I used to have a "little" in Big Brothers/Big Sisters but now I have really gone to the other extreme. From taking a child to fun activities to helping women who have had a true crisis and possibly are at one of the lowest points in their life.
It is rewarding, no matter what one chooses to do.
Okay..back to studying...did I say I am terrified of failing?
Bebbi Good luck! I bet you do great!
Thanks J/L. I am so scared. I have to quit focusing on the fear though. How do you do that?? I don't ever remember being this afraid when taking a test. Ever. I guess I am afraid my brain is officially mush.
Bebbi A little bit of fear is probably good but don't let it get the best of you. You know that you know your stuff! Be confident! What is the worst that can happen? You fail and take it again another time? No sweat!
True. All true. :) I guess I will be embarrassed and feel dumb! But, hey,,I have felt embarrassed and dumb before.
I have to tell people at work too, which sucks. My supervisor and other managers know why I am out. So, that will be uncomfortable too..lol. I am such a baby!
OKAY>>>I am going to do my best and that is all I can do.
I have to go though, so tempted to break away and stop studying..I am going to study for 30 more minutes then get some rest. I have to be up at 6 am. Report to Test by 7:30. Goodnight and thank you so much for the encouragement!
Bebbi,
Try not to be so nervous, if you studied and you do your best, it will work out, and if you don't pass, don't sweat it, you can take the test again, my cousin took it three times, and as they say the third time is a charm, because she finally passed..
Take a deep breathe, and know that you can do it, and if not you can begin again..
:O)
well well well~
lookie here~
just left here all alone~
100~
yay~
102 will have to do, I did not do well on the corner, so I have to take what I get....
:O)
ROFLMAO!!!!! OMG!! ....seriously....Carol...omg~
Bebbi Get a good rest. The everything else will take care of itself.
CArol You didn't do well on the corner? Take your own advise and try again. LOL
Tina,
If I knew that 102 does it for you, I would have done it sooner...
J/L,
I would have to step it up and get fish net stockings, as white socks just does not cut in while on the corner..
Carol You could be going for that innocent school girl look with the white socks. :)
cpgem - i sure hope that isn't socks and sandles!!!
:-)
with shorts!!!!!!!! LOL
J/: That will never work!
my brb this a.m. - ended up being all day..
now - I really need to go to bed.
tina, cpgem, just lin - and anyone still up!!
good nite..
and have an excellent Thursday!!
:-)
110
whabby - howdy and good nite!!
Sweet dreams MEK!
Hello Bear!
MEK: And what's wrong with socks and sandals with shorts??? Hmmmm? ;)
CPGEM: There's nothing wrong with getting 102..divide it by 2 and you get 51..reverse those numbers and you have 15...and what adds up to 15?? 6 and 9!!! So 102 is only 3 degrees of seperation from 69. Now have that cig! ;)
Hi J/LIN!!
Back to work....
Hey Zona! I like your math!
I'm very tired so I am going to call it a night. Sweet dreams, everyone!
TINA: Do you have all your chores done? Go nighty night! TOMA; Area 51..I can't believe that you even knew that Steve Young was a football quarterback! See, you do know something about football.
ZONA: Watcha' doin'? Is Mr Z better? I keep asking but no response.
TINK: Yes, time does fly and I do think last time you were on the blog much you, BEAR, and I were going for a massage. I can't remember how that turned out for the three of us...BEAR?
LYNND: I can so feel your passion in your blog today and always when you speak. As I listen to people being interviewed these last few days...it does give me hope that so many of them say will come about...helping others!
Time to head off to bed. Night....
ERROR ERROR>.....
Soryy ZONA, you did answer me yesterday and I hope he gets better each day! I read the blog in so many different places on my phone that I think I forget things..good excuse, right?
Good night, MEK, Zona, J/L, and Dianne!
Another darn error...was supposed to say sorry not soryy...sounds the same though.
What a wonderful group of volunteers we have here! Kudos to all the caring people who give up time in their days to help others.
Bebbi: Crossing fingers, hoping and praying for you today. I KNOW you'll do fine on your exam. Just relax and KNOW it yourself.
Just found out yesterday that my husband is probably going to lose his job at the end of March. He is on the job hunt starting today. I hate to ask you all for more prayers, but.......
Humbly, I thank you.
