Your Dream Job?

by East Bay J

I thought it would be fun to talk about our jobs, what we do now, what we've done in the past, and a dream job.

For me, I knew I wanted to be a nurse from the time I was young. I fulfilled that, by way of some other jobs, those being a Medical Assistant, a veterinary technician, and working in the claims processing dept. of a major insurance company.

During my first marriage, my husband and I bought and ran a home cruise travel agency. It was wonderful!! We made really good money and it was fun!

Something I thought seriously of doing was becoming a wedding planner. I really enjoyed planning my first wedding (it was a fancy church affair). I loved picking dresses, flowers, the menu, everything to do with the wedding, and thought how much I'd like to help other people with their weddings, too.

I wish now I had pursued that job. The cruise business was fun, but a wedding planner would have been the ultimate dream job for me!

Do you have your dream job? Any chance you could get it if you don't have it?

Morning Lois! I was sure it was going to be Scrishy! LOL Congrats on 1st!

EBJ I will have to think on this as I have truly never figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up.

I have to leave in a bit but will be back later.

EBJ, great post. I've done so many odd jobs, from childcare, to senior care, from waitressing, to being a housewife. :P Yes they are very similar!

I've always had a love of writing. I assumed, one day, when I retired from all of my dead end jobs, I'd write a book or ten.

I went to the local community college and took a class. It was called the JET Program. Job Employment Training was made for people to learn basic office skills. Once the class part was over, they helped you find a job.

I already knew how to use a computer and most office equipment, but finding a job without a piece of paper saying I knew that stuff was virtually impossible back then.

Although I didn't learn anything in the class, a huge lesson and pay off came my way when it ended.

My job finder helper lady asked me a simple question that changed my life forever.

"Lois, what did you want to be growing up?"

It was funny and awkward but I quickly answered, "A writer. And I will be as soon as I retire from this great job you are going to find for me!"

Then she asked, "Why wait until you are retired?"

I had a million and one excuses, beginning with, I had no master's degree in anything. Who would hire someone with no professional writing experience?

Rather than make this long story longer, I'll just say, and the rest is history. By the next day, that wonderful lady had me interviewing with a newspaper, where I was hired.

I had to set aside my own issues of self-doubt. I needed to have faith in me. And most importantly, I needed to see for myself that dreams are achievable.

There were and still are many roads to be paved career-wise for me. At least now I know they are possible, which is half of the battle.

EBJ: I always wanted to be a writer. That would have been my dream everything.

I worked retail for years..and actually liked it because I got to talk to so many different people. I quit my job when I moved to AZ to become a caregiver for my mom though..and I just never went back to work when she passed away. I'm glad I got to be a caregiver though, and wouldn't change that for anything.

I do love my job, however the profits are low, they never used to be, yrs ago money was to be made in this business. My old boss raised three children, and sent them all to college, he was always very comfortable. And then 9/11 happen and everything changed..
Commissions were taken away, and the profit began to sink, and that is when all changed..

So here I am, so be it...

I have life tho, and thats a good thing..

EBJ - great blog today - thank you.

When I was little - I wanted to be a stewardess SOOOOOO badly - I wanted to travel the world - I thought that would be the best thing ever...... well, my dad put an end to that - told me that it was nothing but a "glorified waitress" and there was NO way his little girl was doing that....... I suppose back "in the day" it was "coffee, tea or me" and he wasn't having any of that.....

SO - during high school - the business teacher dude was SO gorgeous that several of my friends and myself took business classes JUST to have this man as our teacher - SO, because of him - I got my degree in accounting - (for someone that hated math - go figure) -

I have enjoyed several of the jobs that i have had over the years - but i never found THE dream job.

MEK in AZ said...

cpgem - I totally understood what the good news was!! I'm glad you are busy..

I'm going to share a cute story with you all - (and I hope this does not offend anyone)..

my 4 1/2 year old nephew keeps telling us all that he wants to be a fireman - that is ALL he talks about and loves everything about it - heck, even got his own BIG firetruck for Christmas... he's been to the fire house for a fun visit.......

but ............

One day, his dad had to take the car in to get a tire fixed.... they let my nephew watch them change the tires and when he saw how "cool" it was and how "fast" they rotated all the tires - he looked at his dad and said, "I want to grow up to be the tire changer guy".......

we all thought - now, that is something to aspire to...

My brother is now trying to remind him about the FIREMAN job...

Congrats on first NN (and the worm)

I pretty much fell into my career. After I was first married, I was working several part-time jobs, one of which was cleaning house for a rather well to do retired school teacher. She was the president of her Alumni Assoc. and was getting overwhelmed with the paperwork for the membership drive. She asked me to help and as I became familiar with what was needed, gave me more and more to do. After a while, she told me I was wasting my brain doing the jobs I was doing and encouraged me to get my GED. She took me to the test site and picked me up after. At that time you could wait for verbal results and she waited with me. When my results were ready the monitor started off by asking me where I had gone to school. I immediately thought I had failed and failed badly. The monitor then informed me that I had tested at the 2nd year college level and suggested I take some CLEP tests and also pursue a college education. My mentor helped with the financial aid process and with choosing an area of study. I went to college at night (a lot of them!) and got a degree in Accounting and Business Management (double major). I worked in that field my whole career, although I must admit I enjoyed the management aspect of it the most. At some point I became bored with accounting and lived for a crisis where I could organize, manage and direct. What would my dream job be? The answer to that requires more coffee!

MEK in AZ said...

Scirish - good morning - you had a guardian angel - good for her ..

okay - I'm off to get something accomplished today!!

A51: MEK: OMG, that game last night was a bummer! We got all excited, and then... YUCK!

I think I have close to my dream job now... but it sure was happenstance how I got it!

The question is becoming, what would I like to do in retirement? Maybe write an online science column? Teach part-time? Not sure...

Lois: Kudos to you for pursuing your dream! All successful writers I know have one thing in common. They don't talk about wanting to write... some day. They write today and everyday.

Thanks everybody for your opinions on yesterday's blog! I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to respond... we went right from the drive home from Palm Springs to my sister and brother-in-law's place to watch the football game! But the consensus was sure in favor of continued incarceration.

Lynn D said...

Ok Morning glories!

Lois I have been wracking my brain and I think my dream job would be a travel writer or one of the people who get to go in and rate hotels etc.... I mean come on travel all over and secretly bitch about the service, who would not love that?

Somehow I always end up working in Customer Freaking Service! Damn people think I am friendly and kind, I can fix all of their petty problems. Arggggh This gets old! Even tho I don't work in the industry anymore people still come up to me in grossry stores or Dept. stores and ask me where things are. WTH oh at Thanksgiving I had some guy ask me where stuff was and how to cook a Turkey. But my helper genes are firmly in place because I told him how to cook the freaking turkey and then showed him where the stuffing and cranberry sauce was. This I swear, I am not kidding, happens to me almost every thanksgiving.

I either look like a gal who enjoys her turkey dinner or just look like a push over for a lost cause. Hell if he had pushed I probably would have volunteered to cook it to.

scirish said...

There is an opportunity that I regret not taking. When I was just starting out, I was working (in accounting) for an upscale dept store and was offered a chance to go to their merchandising school to become a buyer for Womens Fashions. I didn't accept it as we would have had to relocate to Tarrytown NJ and I was worried about affording housing and my then husband finding a job.

Looking back, I think the reason I became bored with accounting was the day to day sameness and lack of creativity. (creative accounting not withstanding)

I have since wanted to be:
1) a writer (I suck)
2) a photographer (see above)
3) a movie director (yeah, right)
4) an interior decorator (how many of those jobs do you see in the paper?)

Do you sense a theme here?

Good Morning Everyone.
Thank you for your fun and therapeutic post EBJ.

When I was a youngster I took a vocation test and it scored high in outdoors, musician and veterinarian. This didn't surprise me as I practically lived outside. I played the viola and continued to do so for many years. And, I absolutely adored all of the animals.

I trained at the veterinary hospital and stayed for the next 30years. I am mostly retired and miss the patients and clients terribly when I am not at work, at the same time I am pretty burned out from the emotion of the work. Quite a few years ago I took a year off to work as a CNA, and also enjoyed working with the human type patients.

I know I was right where I needed to be, however there is a part of me that is sorry I didn't pursue a career in music.

BTW I have the utmost respect for teachers and nurses. They are extremely valuable to all of us.

Hiya hooters!

I'm loving all the responses to the blog today!

We are having plumbing issues under the kitchen sink, so just had someone here to see if he could fix it.

I am tedious to say this, but I counted about 18 AMAZINGS on The Bachelor last night, 3 of them were in the first 5 minutes of the show.

JL (from area 51) can you believe that Deanna is coming back? What drama for the show!

MR. EBJ does not like the show at all, but thought it was a brilliant move to bring her back (to grovel?)

There was a show on after Bachelor that we started to watch, called True Beauty, but only made it the first 5 minutes.

Congrats on 1st today NN!!

Hey y'all! Sorry I've been absent...I am popping in though lol

Great blog EBJ!:) My background is restaurant management. It's not all it's cracked up to be haha

I was just talking to my brothers about this last night. I began working at 14 in the summer picking bell peppers lol

My first "real job" was at the age of 16 as a dishwasher(by hand) at a little italian restaurant.

My dream job would be a personal assistant to the stars or a professional organizer:)

Those, or hit the lottery and NEVER have to work haha

My new guilty pleasure is that new show "True Beauty". I hope the person who is truly beautiful on the inside wins!

It debuted last night..I also have gotten sucked into "Momma's Boys"....JoJo's(who names their kid JOJO anyway lmao) mom is ridiculous!! I have never seen such a bigoted, closed-minded person!

Have a great afternoon y'all!

East Bay J said...

MEK that was a cute story about your nephew! :)

Joey, we started to watch True Beauty last night too. After the first gal out of the car (brunette in tight lime green dress) flipped her hair back for the 10th time in 5 minutes, MR. EBJ wanted to watch something else.

Even her big boobs couldn't keep him tuned in! LOL

My very first "job" was selling magazines over the phone. I was about 15 at the time. You went down the phone book, calling every number.

For every excuse someone would give for not wanting to buy a subscription, there was an answer sheet that you could refer to, to help convince the person.

The manager was given the forms at the end of the day with the people we had signed up. He would contact the people himself to verify the subscription.

I was "fired" after about a week, as the only person who I signed up was Spanish speaking. She didn't understand what I was saying and I guess she said yes or "si" to whatever I said.

I was also a nurses aid in a SNF, a gift-wrapper one year during Christmas, and another interesting temp job I had was answering the phone.

The company name was The Morf Organization. For some reason, I always messed it up. It was around the time that Mork and Mindy was on tv, so many times I'd answer The Mork Corperation or something.

Lots of times I would hear the callers laugh when they heard me answer the phone! Sometimes they would play along and say Mork from Ork, or Nanu Nanu when I told them to hold on.

I didn't last long there, either :)

VIG Welcome home! We missed you!

LynnD You must look very friendly an approachable. That's a good thing. :)

scirish One of my duties at a small non-profit was keeping the books. They sent me to college courses and had me train under an accountant. I love numbers! :)

Just_Lin said...

Joey I promise not to call you JoJo! LMAO!!!

Tinka I am attempting to simplify, not just with holiday decorations.

Lani I always loved animals, too. I wish I had some musical talent but I don't. :( I have a certain amount of artistic talent but haven't done anything with it for decades.

Sandie Maybe you could work at one of those places that sells all sorts of things to help keep your closet organized. :)

Carol I'm glad you are busy with business today. Hopefully, the economy will pick up soon and that should help.

EBJ Great blog today! I'm one of those people who just kind of fell into different jobs. I never had a burning desire to have a particular profession. I envy people who always knew what they wanted to be when they grew up and actually accomplished it.

Sandie said...

Hi Just_Lin! How are you today? Are we doing a Custard countdown anytime soon?

I think I may have told you guys about teaching English to Koreans when I lived in Korea. For awhile I had a job where I would call someone and have a five minute conversation, then call the next person. I would start at 6am and finish at 8am. That's a lot of calls! Anyway, this one morning a high school teacher wanted me to teach him curse words and tell him what they meant. I've never been a swearer (just never felt right on me--although I'm fine when other people do) so you can just imagine me spitting out cuss words and then explaining them! He even asked about the f-word, saying he had heard his students say it and wanted to know what it meant. Boy were my cheeks red that morning .... Mr. Sandie got a big laugh out of that one!

Just_Lin said...

Eventually, at the non-profit, I became the administrator and was involved in community organizing and many public speaking engagements. I NEVER would have hoped to grow up and do public speaking. I never did get used to that. As a kid, I performed in toe and tap recitals, was a majorette leading a band in parades in Jr. Hi, and a flag twirler performing in school assemblies and at games. The public performing was relatively easy for me but the public speaking? Hated it!

Just_Lin said...

Great blog. The 2 dream jobs I had as a child were to be a famous actress and to be a writer. I tried neither.

I ran a licensed day care for 10 years, I have worked as an office adm. for 13 years. I love interacting with the people and I always enjoyed that aspect when I worked as a bartender and waitress when I was much younger. I have also been a decorater in a bakery.
Honestly? My fav job ever was bartending.

My new fav job is being a Grandma :)

Hope everyone is having a good day. Can't wait for the Biggest Loser to start tonight either MEK!

Great post EBJ. I don't remember aspiring to any particular job or profession growing up. I came from a family of "do gooders", and I mean that in a nice way lol! I think we spent so much time helping others, that I never really thought about my future.
I do remember working summers in a Dry-cleaners pressing National guard uniforms. I worked in the middle of 4 large presses. The temps in there got to be over 300 degrees! As I recall, I was built like a brick shit house then lol!!
I had a short stint as a waitress. I was aghast that waiting on tables included more than just waiting on tables!
My dream job since "growing up" has been to work in the field of music. I did this buy starting my own Karaoke business. It brings me joy, so I guess that is the whole point.
BTW I was able to buy all my equipment after working in the Automobile industry , Chrysler 14 yrs and General Motors 24. I started when I was 21. That's a long time chasing cars lol!

Good afternoon/evening Owls.

I just dragged my A$$ out of bed because I can't breathe laying down anymore. So I will sit up at the computer for a while.

EBJ, Very interesting topic today. I love reading about everyone's dream and real jobs.

MEK, You and I have had similar dream or real jobs, it seems. When I was 11 years old I took my first airplane trip to New York. I fell in love with the idea of being a stewardess (that's what they called them back then). The height requirement was 5'6" I think. It really didn't matter because anything over 5' eliminated me.

In my senior year of high school I took a work education class and they placed me in a Dental Office after testing my interests and abilities. I learned to be a dental assistant and worked at that for 6 years after graduation. In those days, there were no benefits and vacations could only be taken when the dentist took his.

So, I had the opportunity to go to work for the State and ended up in an Accounting Office. I was able to go to college with the help of the state and I got an AA in Accounting. I decided I didn't really like accounting so I switched my major to English because it was easy. By then I had 3 kids and I just wanted to be done with school ASAP.

That English degree led me to an entry job in Human Resources and I worked my way up to manager. I really fell into that field and I loved it, even though I hated the politics of the Governor's Office.

Now I am loving all the volunteer jobs I have and I figure I have finally earned the right to sometimes do absolutely NOTHING!

I hope you are all having a nice day. I am going to take some drugs and go back to bed.

Good evening feathered friends!

EBJ...thanks for yet another thought provoking blog!

I don't know that I have ever had my "dream" job, but I have had some that I really enjoyed and looked forward to going to everyday. I have always been a retail manager, but in a couple of instances I got to do other things within the title. I created the policy and procedure manuals for one company, set up a training department, trained employees corporately in sales and operations and developed programs. In another job, I created the Customer Service training program and wrote a full training manual that was adopted corporately. I also, as a district trainer got to re-configure the Store Manager training program. I loved those aspects of the job. JUST LIN, I also had many occassions to lead workshops for corporate meetings and I was amazed at how comfortable I felt up in front of all those faces!!

I really love the job I have now, but I wish it paid more so I can really think of making it my new career. I am challenged daily and learn new things each day. It's not a creative job, but I do enjoy it.

I guess at this age, I am just thankful I have a job and one that I enjoy.

LOIS and SCIRISH...I think the fates found you!

Oh, I miss you guys!

I have been back to work for 2 days and I'm overwhelmed with work.

Next Monday I get evaluated (every two years) and I'm already very nervous about it. There is a lot of prep work for it.

Also, we are starting a new reading assessment and it is a lot of work. Tonight I will be pouring over the manual that is about five pounds heavy.

Great blog today!!!!!

Even though, I just complained about my work, I have my dream job.

I can't imagine doing anything else.

I love teaching! I just get overwhelmed with all the testing we have to do.

CAROL - What an appropriate send off for your uncle. My brother had a military funeral, too. My Father still has the flag that was presented to him and my Mother. And one of my brother's best friends played taps....I don't know how he did it.

EAST BAY J - Great blog!! I work in customer service. I LOVE IT!!! I might not make the best money in the world, but I feel like I make a difference in people's lives, even if it is just to send them with a smile and a THANK YOU everyday!!!

MO - Your blog on Saturday really is a subject near and dear to my heart. Yes, I do find that some people lack the appropriate skills to really be serving the public, but I try to find the good. A perfect example is the day after Christmas. I took the kids out shopping. My youngest wanted Guitar Hero Aerosmith @ WalMart. It had been marked down to 49.88, but when we got to the checkout, it rang up @ 69.88. I told the cashier that it was clearly marked on the shelf for the lower price. When the person in that department didn't respond to her call, she personally went back and verified the price!!! If she hadn't I wouldn't have bought it.

I hope everyone has a great Wednesday!!! It is my oldest son's b'day today....can't believe is 12!!
