I was finally allowed into the Temple!!

by Tina~in_ut

Draper Utah Temple

The Mormon Temple is huge. It looks like a Cathedral. It's not one big room, though. It actually consists of several different rooms designed for different purposes. Some are used for Temple Marriages, some for family sealings, some for the baptism of the dead, and yet others for practicing being called into the afterlife. The only people who are permitted into a temple are Mormons in 'good standing', meaning that they have paid their 10% tithing, attend church every Sunday, and live the "Word of Wisdom." They are given a 'temple recommend' after being interviewed by their bishop and found worthy. Some non-mormons call this a 'club card'.

The only time a non-mormon is permitted into a Temple is after it is completed, but before it is dedicated. Today I took a tour of a new Temple with my family. It was interesting to say the least. The Heavenly Father is said to roam the halls. I didn't feel Him there. It is strange for me to have a huge building dedicated to God and it is open every day but Sunday.

The Celestial Room

The Celestial Room was very beautiful, but did not remind me of Heaven. This room is where some go to practice being called into Heaven. Women are given special names when they get married in the Temple and their husbands are supposed to call that name and reach through a curtain and pull them through into "heaven". Since mormons believe in eternal marriage, this is very important.

The Sealing Room

The Sealing Room is where Temple marriages and Family Sealings take place. Families can be sealed together for all eternity. (Whether you like it or not!) There is no “til death do us part” in the mormon religion. There is a big mirror on two walls and the bride and groom kneel facing each other with a mirror behind each of them. If they look beyond the other person into the mirror, it looks like they go on forever and reminds them that their marriage is forever.

The Mr. and I both felt like we were in a Marriott hotel when walking through the halls of the Temple. My older son thought he was in the Grand America, a local hotel. Interestingly enough, while researching for this blog, I came upon quite a few informative websites and blogs. When we were leaving the Temple today, there were people across the street with signs that had some of the same web addresses that I had been reading……all of them sponsored by ex-mormons.

If you ever get a chance to tour a mormon temple, I would go just for the experience. And then promise to call me afterward and tell me what you thought!

Morning Glories!

Boy Tina interesting information. First of all what do you have to do to practice being called to heaven that you need a whole room for this purpose?

Being found worthy means you have paid up? What about being a good person?

Sealing for eternity? While I love my family there are a few I hope to move away from in the after life.

I have to say the pictures remind me of hotel lobbies too! A little cold but nice.

From Area 51: I never made it back yesterday. Took longer at the food bank than I expected and then Mr. Lynn D and I went out to dinner with our older daughter and the grandkids. I was exhausted by the time I got home.

I keep thinking about unknown things about me EBJ and really it is boring. I have never met anyone famous knowingly.

I may have danced on a table but don't remember. I did attend a few parties that I did not remember the next day so it is very possible.

Oh I was in drill team but did not twirl a baton.

Off to get coffee.

TINA - Great blog. I must agree with LYNN D and say that it looks more like a grand hotel....ala maybe the "Hilton"!! lol!! Interesting stuff. I might have to check out more info.

LYNN D - Not sure who prasoon is, so I officially say that you are FIRST!!! Congrats. :O)

I just got home from work. I took a half a vacay day so I can watch all the coverage of the inauguration!! I'll be back in a bit. :O)

Tina, very interesting blog! When we lived in Korea I met many Mormons and learned quite a lot about their religion. I've been interested ever since, and I'll admit, not in a good way. While I admire their sense of community and commitment to each other, I don't understand what I see as a religion that treats women like second class citizens. And that statement has nothing to do with polygamy.

I've read several books, including one we just read for book club, called The 19th Wife. This book is about the Mormon Firsts, who believed in polygamy. Most Mormons do not. (It is fiction but based on facts.)

I know many Mormons and they are kind, caring people. I just really don't get the whole "man pulling the wife into heaven, God only speaks to the prophet (like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young when God told them it was His will that they marry more than one woman) and the secret underwear.

Whoa, I really shouldn't get started on this.

Have a great Inauguration Day! I'm so proud of our country today!

Glad you got to tour the temple, What did the kids think, were they happy campers?

I feel at times I live such a sheltered life, I find the things that you all do so interesting. Kudos Tina, for thinking outside the box..

Good Morning Hooters!

prasoon? congrats on 2st.

Tina~ the thing that struck me the most was this building is dedicated to God but everyone is not welcome. Thats not my God.
I admit to having limited knowledge of the Mormon faith, but enough to know I want no part of it.

I agree too about it looking like a beautiful hotel.

Hope everyone has a good day!

Today, is a day for the history books, there is def excitement in the air..

I wish our President the best, and am in hopes America will get the change that is so wanted. He does have a difficult task in front of him, However from what I have read he is up to the challenge. They are saying New Beginnings, so we shall see. I saw a snippet today on Good Morning American, Ron Claiborne (sp) was in Kenya, it seems Kenya is have a celebration of their own for the President, I had no idea. So yes I would say, today is day of history..

whabbear said...

Tina: Very interesting blog on this inauguration day! You've generated an interesting juxtaposition of church and state issues!

My thoughts on your blog? Quite strongly, that the more organized a religion is, the more I distrust it. Your blog gives us a flavor for just how organized the Mormon religion is.

Where does my distrust come from? The elements of the organization so often set up an "in-group" versus "out-group" mentality. Once that mentality is in place, it's used to control members' behavior in ways that, all to often, perpetuate the organization and those who aspire to positions of power within it.

Lynn D said...

Amen Whabby! I so agree and feel much the same way.

I just took a moment to run in and check the TV and I was watching and I know this seems silly but I am getting a kick out of the hats that I see bobbing in the crowd. Everything from stocking caps to cowboy hats, military hats, classic mens homburgs, scarves etc... It seems to me that in just those hats there is a representation of all the people here in the US.

It is making me teary! I told you silly.

Mary/MI said...

Good morning all.
Tina, I know nothing about the Mormons. I was amazed with the pictures, but can't help to compare them to the European Cathedrals. They are beautiful, but so ornate! I can't help but wonder why so much glam and glitter is needed. I think the more money spent in the "temples/buildings/cathedrals, the less is given to the needy, but what do I know lol!

I am off to the big city to shop. We are finally getting snow free days and the roads are pretty much cleared out. I have a long list. Have a great day all! May all your expectations be fulfilled.

Jodi said...

LYNN D - I agree, and I don't think you're silly. I'm getting choked up already myself.

Happy Inauguration Day!

Tina~in_ut said...

LynnD~ congrats on updated 1st~ :D I guess since you asked....i'll go into more detail. The entire purpose of the mormon religion is for the man to become a god of his own world. They believe that 'god' used to be a man just like us and was given this world to fill with his spirit children. So they practice going to the highest level of heaven (they have three levels). THAT is why it's so important to practice! And yes....you have to pay to get to heaven! lol~

Jodi~ yes....a hotel it is~

Sandie~ i totally agree with everything you said~ You are so right on!!!

Kgrl~ if you take the day off....you should be sleeping in....not like anything's goin' on~ :D

Good Morning IBB~

You guessed it, I laughed and cried! LOL

Jax LMAO at your description of your neighbor! See what taboos do people they are driven to excess. (hiccup).

Tinka so happy to see you post!

Mary be careful out there!

Ok going to blow my nose.

Oh thank goodness so many of you agree! I was at the gym this morning worrying that I should not have been "Mormon bashing" on the blog. I was rushing home thinking I should delete my post!

Tina, thanks! Are you going to tell Jodi about the underwear or should I?

Whabbear, you are so right.

Hey, it's snowing here, too, Joey! Like crazy! But it's not sticking to anything.

The Inauguration was so great! I felt so proud and emotional.

Praying that he will be okay!!

goldie said...

MEK- I read that he had a seizure and was taken out as well as Sen. Byrd who is 91 and in frail health. Hope they both are ok.

My youngest is in DC today- have been trying to reach him to see if he ventured out to any of the goings on- but can't get thru on his cell. Will have to wait till he calls me.
I sure wish I was there. My sister called me on Saturday and asked me if I wanted to do a road trip to DC with her- we could sleep on the floor of her friends sisters studio apartment with 8 other people. I passed. The thought of one port-a-potty for every 6000 decided it for me!! I am going to go home tonight and watch everything they re-broadcast.

I did go into an office and watch the oath and speech. Leave it to FOX news to question if the swearing in is legit because there was bungling of words!!

goldie said...

P.S. Where did the 1st post of the day go and who was that?

Whab- I agree about the orginized religion. I could go on for days about that....

Lynn D said...

Sen. Kennedy is responding to questions and his wife is with him. Current report is that he is doing better.

Sen. Byrd is also ok. Reported from his office and website.

Amazing! I need to tear myself away from the TV and get something done. LOL

LynnD Congrats on coming in second but being first! LOL

Tina Excellent and interesting blog today. Our 49ers used to have a quarterback who wore special underwear. Not being a religious person, I find several organized religions to be patriarcal with interesting rites and customs, primarily designed to exert power over the people. Also, Mormons are certainly not the only ones who tithe. I have neighbors who are Mormon but we have never discussed their religion except I know they do not drink.

Bebbilane said...

Tina: Very interesting blog. So you got to enter into it because it is new and hadn't been dedicated yet? How interesting and very beautiful.

LynnD: Congrats on first!

Did anyone get to see the inauguration? I was in class all day. I heard it was official after lunch though. I really wish I could have seen it, I guess I will catch it tonight on the news.

Well, I have to go and walk, walk, walk..sitting in class all day doesn't get me any steps!

Take care and talk to you later, Gaters.

iteach said...

Hi Everyone!

My class watched the inaugaration today on TV.

They were more impressed with Aretha Franklin! lol

They thought she must be the queen with a hat like she had on her head.

They enjoyed watching Obama, but they thought his speech was too long.

iteach said...

Tina, thanks for the blog today. I really don't know to much about the mormon faith, so that was all very interesting.

Good evening feathered friends!

Like LYNN, I cried when I watched the 44th president take his oath. They had a tv at work so we could take a peek...so glad I did. It started with chills then tears. But I believe they were tears of happiness. I turned to go back to my desk and I said...good things are going to happen. I pray I am right.

I can't wait to see what Michelle wears tonight! Ok, so that's a bit shallow...so what!!

TINA...I have known a few Mormons, but never discussed their religion too much. One lady I knew, had a daughter that got married in the Temple. She complained because she couldn't find a coke anywhere!! WTF, as I was under the impression Mormons don't partake in caffeine. Maybe she is Mormon like JAX's drunken neighbor! Just sayin!

It effing snowed again today...all day. I am so sick of cleaning that crap off my car when I leave. I stopped into Dollar General on my way home...maybe 10 minutes and had to fricking clean the snow off again. GGggrrrrrrrr!

CAROL...maybe instead of happy pills, GOLDIE will make you some brownies!

JAXXXXX...I would never slap you...too hard!!! SMAK, errrr, I mean SWAK!!

Maureen said...

TINA...when I saw the title of your blog, I was thinking...why would Tina go to a Jewish temple...and why would it have been hard to do? Everyone is welcome! And Judaism doesn't need to be practiced in a "temple" at all...any place that you consider holy is all you need. Services are held in homes, churches, party rooms, schools...anyplace at all.

We are not too picky!LOL!

Zona said...

Hi Everyone!

TINA: Great blog today! I wish there had been an undedicated Temple around when I was in Utah..I would have liked to see the inside. The outside of the one I did see was a little scary.

What I found so unusual were the
'wards', I think you called them, every couple of miles. I have never seen so many of the exact same building in so small an area.

Thanks for another wonderfully informative blog...loved it!!

Zona said...

LYNND: Congrats on FIRST...don't know why you said second..but looks like you're first to me!! ;)

SANDIE: I read all about the secret underwear...oh would I hate that in AZ!!

CPGEM: If you find any happy pills..let me know, kay?? How 'bout some Happy Blue?? You'll have to use your imagination though. ;)

TINA: Thanks for the interesting blog. I worked for a Mormon for a few years (we are still friends) and I always thought his family life with kids was nice...but then years later he got divorced and married a couple of times and started drinking and lost his job. I think all these years later he is quiet and happily married for quite some time but not a Mormon anymore. I would love to see inside a Temple.

I have had my granddaughters all day today and we just hung out. I tried to get them to watch TV with me and they only watched the swearing in and that is because I made them. They will be surpirsed to see their mommy taped the whole thing for ALL of them to watch.

I wish former President Bush and his wife good wishes and welcome the new President Obama and his wife. I am glad to see the people of our country so excited...that is what makes me excited!

BTW MAUREEN, I can't wait to see what michelle wears tonight too. I mentioned that to my husbnad the other night and he told me he doubted anyone was thinking of that..HA...most women and some men and all fashion designers.

I need to take the girls home for basketball practice and them come home and watch TV (MO, get back to me on that dress). :)

Hmmmm...can't think of anything else. I'm pretty darn boring. ;)

Barb~ lol at the secret underwear! When the mormons go thru the temple to either get married or to get their endowment, they get special underwear to wear for the rest of their lives. There are special symbols on them in different places. They wear them ALL the time.....yes....even THEN!!!! They come down to about their knees and the women's have capped sleaves so they have to wear modest clothing. Here is a link you can check out:

I'm dog tired. Didn't get much sleep all weekend, so I'm going to bed. Good night Owls. Sleep tight and sweet dreams.

Lots of chuckling tonight:

MEK: OMG! A democrat president! LOL!

Dianne and JAX: Totally LOL at your fallen Mormons!

Carol: LOL@you saying hello to yourself in the nest!

SacBarb: You Party Animal, you! That sounds like a great time! And not a moment too soon... as California's weather is FINALLY about to change!

Zona: You make me laugh, too! Now get back to work!

Mary/Mi: Indeed! What would Jesus himself say?

Tinkatia and MEK: Hope you feel better real soon!

Finally: Where's Shirley?
