Meet the Marciano's

The Marciano's, circa 1958

With the recent passing of my uncle (my mothers brother), my cousin, his daughter, had this picture displayed at his wake. This picture was taken on his wedding day at the reception. When I saw this picture I stared at it in awe, as it was so comforting to see all my aunts and uncles, some of my older cousins, and of course my grandmother. I am not in this picture, as it was taken before I was born, but my brother is, he is standing in back of the little boy in the very front (center of picture), behind my brother is (sitting) Aunt Jo.

My mother comes from a family of twelve and they are all in the picture. I don't remember ever seeing a picture where the twelve of them are present at one time. I love how they are all dressed, so perfect. None of them were
financially well off, but you can never tell in this picture, as they all made the best of what they had.

My big Italian family roots started in Naples, Italy with my grandfather coming over thru Ellis Island, and settling in Newark, NJ. They all lived in a cold water flat on a street, where the houses where crammed in next to each other and their doors had no locks, as there was no fear. Things were simple then, they did not have much, but they had each other. My grandmother always made "wet" dishes for their meals (see my vid, if you are brave) as they could not afford meats. All my aunts and uncles went to work at a very young age to help pay the bills. They shared clothes and shoes throughout their childhood years. And as my mother tells me, they were always happy.

I have always cherished my mothers family, as they have def given me the laughter that I remember as a child. Some of my uncles had nicknames, and I always called them by such. Uncle Porky, Uncle Joe Brown, Uncle Ju Ju, Uncle Nutch to name a few. I am told each of these nicknames had a meaning and I believe I was told the stories behind these nicknames, however I can't remember them. I guess I can't remember the stories as it was not important to me, what was important, is being with them, and making the memories that we did, which will be stored in my heart forever.

Out of the twelve three are left, including my mom. I am one of 32 cousins which range in age from 60ish to 30ish. I don't see them all, but I do see some, and keep in touch with others thru e-mail.

I stared at this picture for hours and tried to plant my mind into theirs, as I wondered what they were thinking, did they know how the world would change, did they know those simple days of doors unlocked where to be no more. It is quite a mystery what their thoughts where and I will never know. What I do know, is I knew each of them, they all make me proud to be a part of this family, and most proud of my heritage. The family bond that is so clearly evident in this picture is a true statement of my being and what I have become. I do say this often, and I mean it so, I am so very grateful.

Morning Glories!

Carol what a wonderful picture and blog.

My Dad is from a family of seven kids and my Mom was from a family of 15. So when there are family reunions of any kind our pictures look like that.

Unfortunately my Mom's side has dwindled. of the 15 kids there are only 6 left. Some I knew very well and some hardly at all. It does make me wish that I had more information about all of them before they passed.

Off to get more coffee.

PS I live in an area where I hardly ever lock my doors.

CPGEM: Thank you for sharing your family with us today. I just love the picture and reading a little about your family's history.

I didn't know my extended family very well. My dad was an only child..although his mom had seven brothers and sisters. My mom had two sisters..her dad had six siblings..her mom five sisters. I think because we moved away from Ohio so early in my life..I never knew many of my aunts, uncles or cousins. I think that's why I love to read about other people's big families, the closeness and the love they shared.

I think I can guess what the people in this photo are saying, CPGEM. I bet they are looking at one another and thanking God for blessing each of them with such a wonderful, loving family.

Great blog today...thank you.

Ok..off to bed I go. I hope everyone has a wonderful day. And what I wrote in Area 51..about being good?? I guess I'll have to ammend that. I don't think Glamour Eunice will mind if we're a little bit naughty...in fact I think she'll encourage it!!! ;)

Good night everyone...

Oh Lord I don't know which is more creepy, Eunice in a habit or as a hooker? LOL

Morning Tina and Zona!

goldie said...

Good Morning Hooters and Holy Cow Eunice, you sexpot!

Congrats on 1st lynn!

Carol what a wonderful blog. It is so easy to tell how proud you are of your family and heritage.

My dad had 3 sisters, but when his parents divorced when he was 12 he chose to live with his dad. His mother (the wicked witch)and 2 of his sisters disowned him. (how frigging sad is that??) But his Dad remarried and his step-mother was the best thing that ever happened to him and gave him another sister(who is 2 months YOUNGER than me.)

My mom had 2 brothers and a sister and is extremelly close to them.

As I've said before all my relatives live in Germany, so I really don't know them. But the stories I could tell you are amazing. The flight from Hitler, the loss of great wealth and the hardships they endured are all written in a book (although in German) my Aunt put together several years ago. I never really appreciated what my Moms story was until we took a long car ride and I started asking questions. I almost crashed the car a couple of times when she talked about their flight and what they endured.

Morning Zona.

Good Morning Tina, Zona-My-Baby, and Goldie. I will be back to read the blog when my house warms up. It snowed last night. I am going back to bed for about 20 minutes. See you then.

Totally kewl, Carol, and well written too!

As I said before, next family reunion, I'm expecting an invitation! LOL!

Good morning, Lynn D, Tina, Zona, and Tinka!

Goldie: I would love to be able to read that history! Translator, anyone?

Tinkatia said...

Carol - What a lovely way to start my day, reading the story of your family. It has put me in a 'warm' mood. How lucky you are to have that picture.

Tinkatia said...

Zona - I hope you are fast asleep now. Phone me later.

Tinkatia said...

Whabbear - Good Morning. When I have a family reunion, will you come to that too. You are very welcome to do that.

Tinkatia said...

I wanted to get to 25 before I told my family story.

There are absolutely no pictures of my dad's family pre 1917. On Dec 6 1917, a French cargo ship fully loaded with wartime explosives collided with a Norwegian ship killing 2000 and injuring more than 9000. My grandmother was very well off before that, owning 8 properties in the North End of Halifax. She lost every one of them. She was never the same mentally or emotionally after that, even though she lived to be 78. My dad's house (with every picture they ever had) was destroyed. They were one of the fortunate families however as they suffered injuries (some severe) but no deaths. The accident received very little media attention because the government did their best to 'cover it up'. It should never have happened. It is still the largest world wide accidental explosion.

My dad was seven at the time, the youngest of 3 boys. When we left Halifax we lost close contact with them and my mother's family.

My mom had 3 sisters. They lived in the West End of Halifax. They had damage to their house but it was minimal compared to the North End.

Only one of my mom's sisters (the youngest at 90) is still alive. We are in contact by phone but I haven't seen her since she visited 20 years ago.

I love reading about family history. I only wish I could find more about mine before my great grandparents left Ireland and headed for Canada. I think it was during the potato famine.

Time for breakfast. The snow is beginning to melt, the fires are blazing and it's very pretty sitting at my kitchen window looking out at "all that white stuff". I am quoting Thumper from Bambi. I think I am watching too many Disney Movies.

My phone is ringing. Have a great day everyone.

Carol~ i love this blog~ I can so relate to your big family. I have 25 cousins.....on my mom's side. Most of us are best friends. My mom's parents came from Mexico.....grandpa drove....grandma walked....way back in the day~ Family gatherings were always to loud and so much fun~

Zona~ after sending porn Eunice to you last night, Glamour Eunice should have been a piece of cake to take!!!!~ ijs~

LynnD~ oh honey....this Eunice ain't nothin' compared to the one I can't put on here! :)~

Goldie~ I bet that book is so interesting~

Good Morning Whabbear and Tinka~

Just_Lin said...

LynnD Congrats on #1 today. You are right in style for the upcoming St. Patty's day, too.

Tina OMG! Somehow I don't think the real Eunice would have been caught dead (oops, sorry) looking like that. Her idea of glamour was probably wearing a sparkly rhinestone broach and her red lipstick.

Carol Wonderful blog today. I am not from a big family although I do have cousins on the other side of the country that I've never met.

East Bay J said...

OMG Eunice has been to Glamor Shots!!! Wooohoooo!!

I'm at work and will have to comment later!

Have a great day everyone!

Just_Lin said...

Carol I forgot to add how much I love that family photo. I think it would be great to grow up in a large family like that. Kind of like belonging to a private club. The little girls' dresses remind me of how much I used to love getting my new Easter dress and shiny shoes.

Zona said...

TINA: It's the element of surprise, dontcha know?? I didn't know you were going to change your avatar..I almost choked when I saw her this morning. I'm still grinning! :D

GOLDIE: Some of those stories have to be amazing. I wish I knew more about my great grandmother and her life in Russia. I guess my mom tried to ask, but my ggrandma was still too afraid to talk about it..even into her 80's.

Zona said...

TINKA: What a sad story about your family's loss...I'm going to have to google that and read more about it.

You can never watch too many Disney movies...and Thumper is especially cute!

HI BEAR!! HI EBJ!

J/LIN: When I was a kid my mom would dress my sister and I in red velvet dresses and shiny black patent leather shoes for Christmas. For Easter..yellow or white dotted swiss, white patent leather and springtime hats for church. I had asthma so bad one Christmas, my folks wouldn't let me go to church. I cried and cried because I couldn't wear that beautiful red dress. Dang...I'm still regretting that. lol...

Just_Lin said...

Zona I used to love my new patent leather shoes. As soon as we got home from buying them, I'd take them to my room, put them on and sit on the edge of my bed, swinging my legs and admiring my new shoes.

iteach said...

Oh, my Carol so many thoughts have crossed my head as I read your blog.

A lot of my great uncles had nicknames. I haven't really thought much of it until now.

Is that what they did in that generation?

iteach said...

Then I thought about how happy they were even though they didn't have much.

Makes me think of the Waltons...

I've been itching to do a blog about the Waltons. I loved how life was so simple.

I loved how they embrassed their situation in the depression and how the love was oozing from their home.

My MIL and FIL come from very large families and it is the same way.

Tinkatia said...

Zona - Thanks for the call. I am still waiting for the furnace man.
I always dressed my girls in red velvet dresses and patent leather shoes too. They always had new pastel dresses and pretty hats for Easter Sunday. Ah those were the days.

Tinkatia said...

Iteach - Please do a blog on the Walton's. I have the first six seasons of that show. I have watched them all 3 times. I don't want season seven because John Boy and Grandma are no longer there. I think they did about 11 seasons but the first ones were the best.

Tinkatia said...

Waving at Just-Lin and East Bay J.

Just_Lin said...

Tinka Waving back at you.

There were plenty of things about the hard times of our parents or grandparents that were not good, even if there was love. My mother remembers having to put newspaper in the bottom of her shoes because of holes starting in the soles. She also remembers putting newspaper between to layers of blanket in order to keep warm. They lived in Cincinnati and it was a real big deal to get an orange in their Christmas stocking.
They definitely did not take anything for granted.

Just_Lin said...

That should be "two" layers of blankets.

Maureen said...

Good evening feathered friends!

LYNN...gratz on 1st!

GOLDIE...you should have that book translated for you. I bet it would be awesome to read. The Holocaust effected so many innocent people of ALL religions and ethnicities.

ZONA...keep looking for your Cleveland connections! SWAK!!

CAROL...I LOVED this blog! I adore your family stories and the bond you all share. The big old Italian families are a lot like the big old Jewish families. Gathering around a ginormous table and eat and talk and laugh!

My dad was one of 6 kids and my mom 1 of 6 as well. All my aunts and uncles have passed. I don't even know how many kids were in any of my grandparents families. I have a TON of 1st, 2nd and 3rd cousins. I am VERY close to the cousins on my mom's side (as if y'all didn't already know that!) And not so much on my dad's side. Maybe because my dad died when I was so young, we were just more exposed to my mom's side of the family.

THANK YOU for such a meaningful blog!! You're and AWESOME crackwhore!

Maureen said...

There was just a DWTS commercial on and everytime I see it I think that there is no one that is compelling me to watch this season. Is anyone else having those thoughts??

Just_Lin said...

MO I agree. There's nobody on DWTS that I'm interested in seeing, either.

Maureen said...

JUST LIN...hi! How are you doing today? I am thinking that maybe it is a good thing...one less show to be addicted to!

LynnD,
Congrats on First.. So funny, "off to meet the Marcianos" :O)

I cant even imagine, how great it was to not lock your doors, I dont think they even had a key..

night.owls.sb said...

WTF... Eunice you are all whored out! At least you have clothes on tho. Hope your night at the strip bar was fun.. didya get lucky?

:O)

Tina~in_ut said...

lol Carol~ Eunice is a good girl~

night.owls.sb said...

Zona,
I think that is the key, my family seemed to all stay in NJ, different areas, but all lived in NJ. Most of my cousins live in NJ as well. I had a convo with Whabby about this, as he wondered as well, if his family stayed in the place as mine did, how different his life would be. So moving away will def have a impact on knowing a family. Out of the 12 of them only on moved to a different city, which is Brooklyn NY, which is def not far.

And yes, perhaps they were thinking what a blessing or maybe a curse.. :O)

night.owls.sb said...

TinaHO,
In that outfit, Not really sure how good she can be.. I truly believe she got lucky..

Maureen said...

I just counted my cousins on my mom's side...18 first, 23 second and 26 third. That isn't counting the spouses. There are more from my grandparents sisters and brothers. I know I have a lot, but I am sure I haven't met most of them!

night.owls.sb said...

Mo,
Yes, the big ole Jewish family is very much the same.. eat, drink and be merry! And my goodness, I am blushing.. "awesome crackwhore" I really don't know what to say!

:O)

night.owls.sb said...

Mo,
How the heck can you count 3rd cousins, I would not know where to begin.. Just keeping track of the 32 first cousins was alot..

night.owls.sb said...

I just saw the news, they are shutting down some streets in time square, so there is more foot traffic.. How the heck are they going to do that!

night.owls.sb said...

J/L,
My mom told me, that the shoes they whore were all hand me downs, my grandmother bought one pair a yr, one for boys and one for girls. If the soles wore out, they repaired the shoes themselves, amazing how they did what they did.. And were happy!!!

Maureen said...

Well CAROL...first I listed each of my mom's sisters and brother, then I listed each of their kids...18. Then I listed each of the 1st cousins kids...23 and finally each of their kids...26. It is really only 25 since 1 was killed 2 years ago.

Tina~in_ut said...

uh....carol....read your last post again! ijs~

Tina~in_ut said...

Mo....38 2nd cousins~ (that i can remember!)

Tina~in_ut said...

that's wrong......it's 42!

night.owls.sb said...

Want to share a story....

I am booking clients to the Caribbean, they are repeat clients, I have been doing their travel for yrs. This past year, the Mr and Mrs have filed for a divorce.. I actually booked their honeymoon. 20yrs ago.. Anyway, she is telling me how hard things are now and the divorce is getting ugly and she is strapped for cash..

So I quote her a price for a trip with her and the kids for April, 15grand (hotel only, suite).. never thinking this yr she is going to go for it, cause she complained so much about money.

When I told her the price she said..

"Oh that is not bad"

I almost fell off my chair..

Amazing....

night.owls.sb said...

43 with Eunice's kid, remember her..

"Debbie" from Dallas...

:O)

night.owls.sb said...

I wonder if MEK, has to use that port a potty while on the golf course..

:O)

Tina~in_ut said...

Carol~ oh my~ it's amazing what a "deal" is for some people. I was talking to Mary today...her flight was cancelled to ORD and she was re-routed thru DEN. She wasn't sure about her connecting flight out of DEN and ORD, so I called the airline she is flying and had them book her for tomorrow because she was going to mis-connect. So after that, I looked up her itinerary on the internet and the flight that I thought was supposed to be booked, wasn't!!!! So I called back and sure enuf, it wasn't booked and now was sold out! SO......they have to take a later flight tomorrow! Oh those airline employees!!!!!

HI Everybody!

Congrats on first LynnD!!

Who's the faves for Idol tonight?

East Bay J said...

Hey hooters!

What a great blog today Carol!

My grandma on dad's side was from a huge Italian family, there were 13 kids. They all grew up on a farm in Iowa.

We had a big family reunion in '93 when most of the brothers and sisters were still alive. It was held at Uncle Tony's (don't all Italian families have at least 1 Uncle Tony??) estate in Illinois.

Carol are you related to Rocky Marciano? Uncle Tony (who I mentioned above) was good friends with Rocky.

I remember one time at my uncle's, Rocky and his wife and daughter came to visit. My cousins and I were shocked that his daughter had on a gorgeous mink coat. She was our age, about 10 or 11 years old.

Talk about being impressed!

My grandma was the last one, she died the year before last at age 100.

There are hundreds of cousins, many of them are in Ill, and quite a few in NJ.

Tina, did Eunice have a boob job? They are so perky! haha!!

She is just so glamorous...

What a long day, I am relaxing and waiting for Survivor.

I'll be back!

The only thing I can remember that I got each year that I loved was the orange!

Thanks for bringing back that memory! :)

OK Survivor is over and I was surprised who got sent home. I can't understand the rationale sometimes. Oh well!
