Playing for Change

by Vig

I have watched this video at last twenty times in the last while. And since there have been over 5 million views, chances are you have seen it as well. It touches me deeply. I love the song to begin with, and in this rendition I love how the different styles and musical textures meld so well together. And it just sounds good. I have been trying to think of a topic to come from this video and I can’t really think of one. So I will give you a couple of the thoughts that are wandering around my brain. “Playing for Change” the producers of this video – see themselves as “a group of artists and inspired people who have come together to connect the world through music”. I think this is an amazing commitment to peace, but is this possible? Is music really a global unifier? How does music connect you with people who you might not normally connect with? If we substitute the word "supports" for "stands by", who stands by you and who do you stand by? What does this song or this version, mean to you?

Morning Glories!

Vig interesting questions. I think these global muscians are contributing to change in the manner they can relate to. I think that is a good thing. Sometimes you can't change hearts until you step out and make your thoughts known.

I am still alive and slogging through. Been fighting depression again and also very busy with the food bank. Many issues going on in the non profit world. I keep hoping staying busy will help lift this fog I am wandering around in. Time will tell.

I have read a few blogs as time permits and I have to say my heart is breaking about all of the loss the owls seem to be going through right now. I have sent up many prayers for all of you.

I will try to check in more often. Maybe this depression is just seasonal and when the sun comes out my creepy friend will leave!

(((Hugs))) to you all.

VIG: I loved the video! As for your question, can music really unify us eventhough we come from different backgrounds and cultures? I believe it really can. I think this video shows how well it can. We are all human beings..we all feel sadness, joy, heartbreak, loneliness, happiness...and music helps us to understand, express and share these emotions. I think music could be the first step in helping us to undertand one another. As long as we are willing to open our hearts and really listen.

I will always stand by my friends and my family. If they need me, they know that I am always there for them.

Great blog today VIG..great video as well. Thank you!

Vig, hope you're feeling better, and I like your question about unity among the people through music. I do believe this is true, even when the words are not understood by a different culture...it's the inflection and tone of voices. Really good food for thought, Vig...

Good morning Owls! Wishing a Happy Monday to Zona, IBB MEK, LynnD(so nice to see you), Ronnie, Carol and all that fly in later.

Thank you for your comments and great thoughts about the blog today. Thanks for responding to the wandering thoughts in my head! And I love that you see music as a unifier. I love the concept of the video which is a part of a documentary from a foundation called "Playing for Change".
Here's another one that they did recently:

Sorry...not too chatty these days...I'm on my last day of some heavy duty antibiotics which were meant to kick Senor Ameba to the curb, and they have made me sicker then the ameoba did. Glad this is it!

Good morning from Sunny Florida..

Tinkatia said...

Back again. How is it I clear out the nest when I come? I must think about this.

VIG - Great blog, great video, great song. You ask what does the video "say to You"? To me they are trying to make the point through their video that no matter where you live in this world or what your circumstances might be, you need support to survive. No-one stands alone and stands well. With friends and family around, it is possible to get through a situation, any situation and still be 'on your feet.' Faced with a difficult situation alone and there is a good change one would collapse under the stress. That is the main reason why we are all here, to give one another strength to cope with any difficulties that come our way. This blog is a Godsend as we don't all have the close families nearby. I hope it lasts forever.

Tinkatia said...

Good morning Bebbi - I wasn't alone. You were here. I just didn't see you behind that tree. You are getting so slim.

Bebbilane said...

Tink, well said!!!

Tinkatia said...

Tina - hope you are feeling better.

Mek - What is a winter storm like in Az? How much does it cool off?

Lynn - I think a lot of us tend to 'feel down' in the winter. Maybe we should go and buy those SAD lights.

Zona - Thanks for giving me #10. I didn't even get 25 today. I am trying for 50.

Tinkatia said...

Ibebold - Thanks for the reminder about A I. I haven't seen it yet this year. I thought I would wait until the auditions were over.

Tinkatia said...

VIG - I just watched the second video and it really is a prayer for unity and world peace. I think it is saying if we just all communicated we would reach that goal. There is no better way to communicate than by music. We reach each other's souls that way. I pray that we can achieve it. Great blog Sweetie.

Good afternoon Hooters!

Congrats on 1st to Zona

No time to comment, but will be back later. I have a rather long ass (I will try to shorten) story about music and a soccer team from S. Africa.

Lani said...

YES YES YES VIG! Wonderful music.
I most definitely think music can heal the world. Music brings so much pleasure & can be such a symbol of peace.

Do you remember a while back when the NY Philharmonic went to N Korea? When they finished playing, the orchestra & the audience had tears in their eyes. I looked at those people and wanted to know everything that was going through their heads. Besides appreciating beautiful music, were they hoping for peace between our countries?

I think exchanges of music between countries would slowly lead to more peaceful relations. Maybe one day we could have even more countries on the video.

Okay ZONA, I am going to attempt to read the comments and blog the way you taught me last night. Thanks

Just_Lin said...

Tinka I think you meant that post for me. Thank you. I should do something special for myself on Valentine's Day but that might make me feel worse, actually.

Sandie and IBB Thank you.

VIG I think music is a universal language. So much emotion can be conveyed with music we one can get the message even if we don't understand the language.

Oh Vig! let me tell you how profoundly emotional that your blog made me. I cried and it has taken me awhile to respond. Bear with me while I tell a story.

In 2006 we attended the Gay Games in Chicago. Huge event (Olympics) and a fabulous fun time. We were there to watch someone we knew play soccer for the Gold Medal winning Mens 'A' Team-yeah!)

Anyway, during the couple of days we traveled about the city and watched games play we met a team from South Africa. They were a womens team who I was drawn too- because of music. They sang all the time, we would see them huddled after a game, or in the stands of someones game and they would be singing. Beautiful, harmonious voices singing freely and happily.

Finally, I just had to know why. I approached (Mr. Goldie was like,'there she goes', but I dragged my sister and him and my bil along). I asked them why they were always singing.

They told me that it was good for the heart and the soul. That is unified everyone and music was a common denominator for everyone. And here in America they were free to sing and play the game they loved with no reprecussions. You see, in S. Africa, they played knowing there was danger in being openly gay and often had to play places to avoid being seen.

They had been denied visa's to come, but Mayor Daley of Chicago intervenied on their behalf, at the request of 2004 Olympic volleyball player was openly gay from South Africa. The team recieved scholarships to the tune of $75,000 to pay their expenses to come.

We started to watch them play more, and went to their last game- we cheered and yelled for our new friends. They took home the Bronze!! They then came to our friends game and rooted for them as they won the Gold later that evening.

Last year, one of those beautifully spirited, loving women who make up the Womens soccer team was gang raped, tortured and murdered. Because she was openly gay. I dont think I ever cried so hard or was so upset in my life.

Sorry for the long story, but that video really did mean something to me

Hi to GOLDIE & CAROL

VIG, I think I saw Senor Amoeba passing through the Bay Area with his suitcase

Yes, A Prayer for Australia. The fires are horrible. If something didn't burn, it melted. So many people and animals destroyed. It is heartbreaking.

Hi TINK & EBJ & SANDIE

BEBBI, Have a great time in Florida.

I am glad to see you are feeling better TINA

You are welcome SLIN, You have always been here for me also. It sort of goes with Stand By Me. There are so many things I want to say, but I won't. What a surprise SLIN!!!

SANDIE & EBJ, Glad you mentioned my 1st boyfriend, Mr. Ed, so see SLIN, I got over him. LOL

Your way helped ZONA. Although I started and stopped for various reasons it has taken a while to finish this. I think I need to do shorter comments, because I am trying to do it too fast and not commenting enough to people.

TINK it is because I had the comment box up on the screen for so long a bunch of OWLS posted before I finished. You soak up that sun!!! You ARE the sun TINK.

Lani~ I read the comments first, then go back with two tabs open (one for reading one for writing!) that way if someone is especially funny.....you know....like carol and her porn....or if someone asks a question but someone has already answered it, I won't be repeating~ kwim? :D

Lani said...

GOKDIE, How heartwarming and gut wrenching at the same time. I am sure that is why the slaves sang also. It was their unity and comfort.

How heart wrenching for you to have met someone so kind and know they were tortured and murdered. I will carry some of that in my heart so maybe your heart won't have to be hurting so much.

BTW, I absolutely have always LOVED African voices, and when Jennifer came back from Zimbabwe, she brought back recordings of some singing.

Thanks TINA, I appeciate all of the help I can get.

Hey hooters,

Goldie your story was so very sad
:(

Zona, can't remember the last time we had hail here. You would never know it rained last night, it is sunny and warm today.

Most of my plants on the front porch have died due to frost, it is so disappointing. Even my huge hibiscus looks sad.

Sandie I had forgotten it was a pic of Lani's boyfriend! He taught her how to kiss by keeping the teeth closed and lips open, right?

I will have to try kissing MR. EBJ that way and see how it goes haha!

Tina are you nauseous for any other reason than having the flu?? hmmmm??? :)

Dianne, happy belated anniversary! Did you do anything "fun" last night ???

Lani, I recently discovered using tabs on the web page, so you can open different sites on 1 page.

I was so exxcited! I had no idea and found it by accident!

I had to go to the title company today to get a paper for the tax lady.

Unfortunately, the title company is 1 door down from Sees Candy. Of course I had to go in and get something for Valentine's day for MR. EBJ!

I asked the gals in there how they can possibly work there and not eat chocolate all day! One said to me "who says we don't?" haha!

I would like to work there for a week and make myself sick on chocolate!

I need to go find something to make for dinner, I'll be back!

Lani said...

MEK, TUG thinks it's fun. :)

EBJ, Make a dental appointment 1st.
It is supposed to rain off and on all week. I am grateful for everyone's input on blogging. So, if I phoned Mr. EBJ the day after valentines day he would say he received the candy?....Really?

MEK in AZ said...

Lani - fun for WHO??!! LOL

she is finding her little voice!!

EBJ - I say we start eating the candy NOW!!! I'm sure Mr. EBJ won't mind!!!

Good evening feathered friends.

VIG...I can't watch videos, but I think I got the drift of it. Like others have said, music is a universal language. It is the feeling you get from the melody and if in a different language, the feeling you get from the inflections or expressions (if seeing a performance)Look at Italian or German operas...even if you don't understand the language, you can understand the meaning and feelings. Over time music has transcended race or creed...look at rap, jazz, blues, reggae...all began with minority cultures but is now accepted by all cultures.

I think we can use music to heal and spread peace...if we let it. Look at what we did with We Are the World...

WE ARE THE WORLD
There comes a time
When we head a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on
Pretneding day by day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of
God's great big family
And the truth, you know love is all we need

[Chorus]
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Send them your heart
So they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand

[Chorus]
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

When you're down and out
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, well, let us realize
That a change will only come
When we stand together as one

[Chorus]
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

ITEACH...I agree, the new cast of DWTS doesn't excite me either. I hope you are feeling better.

LANI...hun, you are too hard on yourself. You are an incredible nester. You share your caring, humor and insight with all that need it. I think you have it down just fine.

GOLDIE...there is no explaining how some people can show such disregard for human life. I am sure that team still thinks fondly of the American friends they made in Chicago. {{hugs}}

Vig, loved the video. When I was in Europe this last summer they had a "world day of music". It was wonderful to see musicians of all ages, sexes, nationalities etc. showing their talents on every street corner in Paris. It was comforting knowing that music was being played world wide, and for just a few hours all seemed good around the globe.

Lynnd & JustLynn {{group hug}}

MEK, I am trying to muster up some "I-feel-sorry-about-your-weather words" lol!!

Bebbi~Love that you are seeing "yellow"

Tina,my brave-gone-to-work-sick-and-infecting-everyone lady. Hope you feel better tomorrow!

Diane~I missed your Anniversary yesterday. Hope it was a good one!

Lani~You are the sweetest "loopy" gal I know!

Goldie~Music does bring back sweet & sad memories. I am sorry about the sad memories it brought you :-(

LANI: There are always crashes in NASCAR, but they have incredible saftely precautions now..and mostly only the cars get hurt. I can't watch horse racing..like you I watched one frickin' Kentucky Derby...and it ended in tragedy. Never ever again. Ever.

MEK: Sure..why not?? I'll bring my incredible organizational skills!! LOL! LOL!

I googled Match Play and my reaction was "huh??" so thank you for explaining it!

EBJ: It seems crazy, but you can get sick of the smell of chocolate. My folks lived near Hershey PA and my mom said she never liked chocolate very much afterward.

MO: I just luck into first..if the blog posted any later..I'd miss it altogether! Oh..and I'm beginning to hate pink AND peach..jus' sayin'.. ;)

G'Evening MARY!!

Ah, you guys make my heart sing! I wasn't sure about this blog...thought it was kind of goofy..but you all can take any topic and make it rich and meaningful! The stories and comments have been hopeful and moving! Thanks all! You have filled my blaaaah day with yellow!

If anyone watches "Big World, Little People" it is incredibly touching tonight!

Vig- it was a perfect blog. It led me to remember with both a smile and sadness. But it really was a very happy memory for me. The sadness was the news last year of a brave womans death.

But the happiness that music brought that week to me, those fine ladies and all that were around them was a gift. Without that music, I never would have approached them and found out their real story- and made friendships that while brief in person will be with me a lifetime. :)

Hope everyone is having a nice evening. Watched Obama's speech and am more convinced then ever that we made the right decision in that election.

Jodi- sorry I missed your call yesterday...call me tomorrow if you get a chance :)

MEK in AZ said...

Mary - I would never want you to feel sorry for me or my weather!!

I am looking forward to it!!

It's supposed to start "snowing" before midnight - I will have to get up to see it....

OH - wait - I probably will be up!!

Lani said...

MEK, I don't think Mr EBJ will mind either, as I don't think he will EVER see it anyway!!! :)

MO, We Are The World is one of the greatest songs....and, a tear jerker.

MO, Once again, I appreciate so much the support of my wonderful OWLS. I hold you OWLS up high and you always seem so on top or it. I know that sounds mushy, but I SINCERELY mean it.

MARY, That trip to Paris must have been so heartwarming. When I see musicians, the olympics etc. I think how simple it all could be.

MARY Thank you. Love Loopy

DIANNE, I missed your anniversary also....HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Have a pleasant evening TINKA

VIG Thank you again for your great blog.
I do watch Big World Little People. I saw that episode before and it is extremely touching. Even though I don't know any of them personally, it is like the nest, as I have become attached to them and their lives.

GOLDIE, I feel the same way about music. It is welcoming.

HODI, I miss you on the NEST!

TINA, I hope you are getting through the day since you are still under the weather.

Maureen said...

MARY...how is Jaimie doing? Are you having the same heat wave we are?

Extremely disappointed...

Well I gave MR. EBJ his box of chocolate a while ago. I hinted to him that he doesn't HAVE to wait til Saturday to open it!

It is not opened :( I thought he would open tonight but I may have to just open it myself haha!!!

Zona, years ago a few friends and I went to make donuts with another friend who owned a donut store. We went in really late at night and we had planned to pig out on all the different donuts.

Well, the smell was enough, not one of us even at a donut!

I still liked them afterwards, tho!

Iteach I am not too excited about the new DWTS cast. I don't know who several of them are.

Did anyone who watches the Bachelor notice this? Last week, when they were at the radio station, they blindfolded Jason and had him try to guess which girl was kissing him.

Afterwards, when they showed him from the side, he was sitting with his hands over his crotch!

I told MR. EBJ that no doubt he had a boner, and was trying to not let the camera see it! HAHAHAHA!!!

AMAZING!!

Mary/MI said...

EBJ~LOL@ boner!

MO,Jaimie is at the stage where she doesn't want anyone to bring it up. She doesn't want to talk about it so we are respecting her privacy. She is feeling very vulnerable. Can you imagine, we traveled France & Italy day & night and were never bothered, come home and she gets mugged getting out of work!
We are getting the warm weather here, maybe in the 50s and back to cold this week end.

MEK, I forgot you liked sweatshirt weather lol!

Sandie said...

EBJ, just finished watching Bachelor. His home town dates were ....well, AMAZING! He picked who I thought he would to go home.

It looks like maybe next week is the week the AMAZING DeAnna returns.

I love Medium, too! I had to switch back and forth--it was good tonight!

Mary/MI said...

Medium was good tonight, especially the last 5 minutes, so don't miss that part!

night.owls.sb said...

Sandie,

All I can say is "Amazing" ;o)

Bebbilane said...

EBJ: LOL at the Bachelor boner..too funny!!

Mary: It was a great ending!! I love Medium so much. My favorite show right now for sure.

Mek & Lani: Cool that you watch it too!! :)

Lani: I agree about the family stuff. Really neat! Also, I love that the youngest daughter is getting older. I am anxious to see if she has "the gift" too.

Well, I am watching Leno then heading to bed..night all!

night.owls.sb said...

Ebj,
Wanting to open the chocolate you got our hubby.. LOL...

Iteach,
Not crazy about the DWTS celebs either, I do like Julianna Hough (sp) tho and she will be dancing with her real life boyfriend, he is a country singer, I forgot his name, anywho, I think they will dance good together..
