OMG, are you all serious that these are the first time you've ever seen a planet?? I'll have to get busy, as multiple planets are visible in the night sky every night! Venus is by far the brightest, but Jupiter is the second brightest, and puts on a pretty good show on its own.
In fact, what's totally fun with Jupiter is to look at it in binoculars. Presto! You see these 3 or 4 points of light surrounding it, and you know you're looking at Jupiter's satellites.
One of them, Europa, is now thought to have a subsurface ocean that contains more water than in all the Earth's oceans combined!
But back to Venus. If anybody's interested in understanding the behavior of Venus in our sky (in three months, you won't be able to see Venus at all. Three months after that, it will be visible only before sunrise), I wrote a little blog about it,
