When is it enough?

I have been glued to the news stations since Nadya Suleman gave birth to octuplets. At first I thought it was someone who was not able to have children naturally so she did the standard fertility treatments that were available to her . However, the more time that went by, Nadya's life story started to surface.

When I first learned she had an additional 6 children I was shocked, and wondered why she would want more, and why would a fertility doctor agree to aid her in her quest. I was more shocked to find out she was a single parent living with her parents and she was jobless. It was very clear to me after reading many articles and seeing the news that she could not possibly take good care of all these children.

I am certainly not saying having a lot of children is not good. In many circumstances a big family is something that a lot people want, such as the "Duggers". What has upset me is the reasoning behind Nadya's decision, she states, she is a only child and always wished for siblings, so being a only child has made her want to have as many children as possible. It seems it did not matter to her, that her parents would have to help raise her children, or how she would raise them jobless. It really grabs me at the heart and all I can think about is her selfishness. I believe every child she had was for her own needs, so she could feel wanted, so she could bury her own feelings of not being wanted. These children where born to comfort her, which of course it should be the other way around. It is sort of a role reversal, in a very sad way.

Her parents are at their wits end, as she stays at the hospital with those precious babies, her parents are raising her children, and tending to their needs, the needs that a mother should be tending to. Her parents are already financially strapped, they lost one of their homes due to non payment on the mortgage. Nadya's mother stated Nadya was suppose to help her mother pay some of the house expenses, but never did, and my
goodness how could she, she is jobless.

This should have not gone this far, there should be a limit on fertility treatments. Life is not a game, children are precious and should be treated so. I want to see how she is going to raise these 14 children on her own. When the older ones are getting ready for school and she has 8 hungry babies to feed. I want to see how much government money is going to be sent her way so she can clothe and feed her children.

Modern Technology in medicine has given us so much, it gives life to a heart that can't beat on its own, it gives limbs to ones that have lost one, it allows organs to go from one human to other. But when does it end, when is it enough?

********************************

Update.. I saw on the news last night that 3 of her 6 children are disabled and each of the three receive financial government assistance each month..

And what if, any of the 8 need financial assistance? Should the government pay? I say NO!

*********************************************

Update number 2... the family now has a website and are accepting donations thru paypal, can you even imagine this!!!!

Carol~ I thought she had way too many children, but then I heard The Super Nanny say, "Well, is the parent able to take care of them?" She doesn't say a certain number is too many. She says it's too many when they are not being taken care of properly~ So we'll see~

Good Morning!!

CPGEM: I've also heard there is speculation that she had so many children so she could get endorsements, get paid for interviews and maybe even get a reality show. The cynic in me says this kinda rings true...the optomist in me hopes it isn't. When it comes down to it..I just hope the children are loved and well cared for..whatever her motivation.

Good morning Hooters!!

Congrats on 1st Miss 69~in_ut

Carol- what has me scratching my head is how did she pay for that fertility treatment to have those babies??? It is hugely expensive (my girlfriend tried 3 times to get pregnant thru fertility and had to take a 2nd mortgage). I can't believe that the Dr.s just said- ok, lets do it for free?? Would they??

I hope those babies are well taken care of and I hope that the state follow up closely to make sure they are. Her obsessive need for children needs to explored in my humble opinion.

I too have nothing against big families as long as they are for the right reasons. Love, caring and parents who can supply them with basic needs of life.

Good morning Zonabaaaaaaaaaaaaby !!

It's mind boggling to me!!

Lynnd,
I saw the CNN headline (Alaska), and thought of you. I read the entire article. You were so informative with your blog, that when I read the article I knew everything from you, you could have written that article easily.

With it being the lead story on CNN, hopefully more ppl will realize what is going on, and perhaps more will be done. Including Gov Palin stepping up to the plate to help in some way, as she is def on the hot seat now.. This is her state, lets she what she can do...

Goldie,
I read that she received a disability payment of 160k from a injury she received while working at her job that she no longer works at, cause why should she, she got hurt took her money, and made babies...

Her mother said she never knew about the disability payment, and never got any money from Nadya to help with the bills...

I am all fired up about this.. Cause it is def going to come down to the government stepping in and having to pay..

Morning All...

Great blog Carol! I watched that interview also and had been among the many people thinking that this was not an appropriate choice for a single, jobless mom.

BUT one of the things that upset me was the interviewer asking her what "RIGHT" she had to have all those babies. My immediate thought was what "right" does anyone have to question how many babies anyone has? I am really concerned that the backlash from that could create a situation where some legislation or whatever could again have control over what a women does with her body.

She indicated in the interview that She would accept donations of items that were directly for the babies care, such as swings etc, but would not accept help for herself. The Duggars Have gone much further than that.
From Wikipedia:
"Charity and donations of food and household appliances provides in large part for their lifestyle [15]. Their large house was completed on January 20, 2006 with aid from Discovery Networks and corporate sponsors."

While I do not agree with Nadya's choices,it appears that she really does love her children. What I really don't get why everyone is railing against her, but the Duggers and Jon and Kate Plus 8 (who also have accepted donations) have their own TV shows and are thought to be interesting and cute.

MEK in AZ said...

Scirish - good morning..

I am not a fan of the Duggers or the Plus 8 show -

Morning Glories!

Carol like MEK I have tried not to get to into this story as it adds to my depression. I really think this woman needs psychiatric help. I am kind of in the selfish catagory with her.

That said I really think that some laws need to be put in place about a psych evaluation by a professional before any proceedure is done. This includes Plastic surgery in my book. I do think that doctors need some oversight in this matter. Personally I see no problem with the doctor providing some support as in a way you could say he is the inseminator. (That is a weak joke people) I do think that he needs an ethics review.

I agree with scrishy that this is going to open a huge can of worms. No easy answers here.

Need to get stuff done. Hope you all have a great day.

whabbear said...

Whoa! Very interesting observations, Carol. Until reading your blog and scrishy's response, I hadn't thought of this situation as being the "opposite of abortion" issue... but it is! In the one case, modern medicine supplies the means to have too many children, in the other, it supplies the means to have too few!

Being a civil libertarian type myself, I certainly don't believe that the government should have any regulatory control over either "too few" or "too many". However, as someone who also believes that people should assume personal responsibility for their actions, I also don't feel like I should pay for the feeding and care of these children through my taxes.

whabbear said...

Lynn D: I agree! All sorts of interesting issues floating around this one!

East Bay J said...

Good morning!

I cannot understand how this woman will be able to care for 14 children. Sounds like her parents provide most of the care to the 6 she already has.

This morning on the news, they stated that the hospital where she sought prenatal care starting at week 12, was going to ask the state to foot the bill for the 8 babies.

I worked for many years in neonatal ICU, and the cost of caring for these babies will be in the millions.

Another consideration is that the risk of complications from multiple births. Many of these disabilities are not noted until the child is school age.

The possibility of 1 or more baby having residual affects from the multiple birth seems very high and likely.

It is very sad.

I have watched John and Kate plus 8 only once, and was not impressed.

It seemed that they complained through the whole show about how hard it was and the stress.

All I could think was DUH!

I won't watch the Dugger show nor will I watch a show about the 14 kids, if there should be one.

Off to grossry shop!

OH! MR. EBJ asked what I was laughing about last night, I told him we were discussing male labia on the blog. LOL

whabbear said...

So here's the flip (abortion) side. A former employee of mine was in her early 40's, going through a divorce, and had a new boyfriend. She discovered she was pregnant, something she had been told was very unlikely or impossible by some doctor (that's why no birth control) and had an abortion.

She then proceeded to get pregnant a second time, and had another abortion.

My position: Again, these were her personal decisions, and I don't think the government has any right to interfere. However, I'd rather not have to pay for them!

Tina You must be tired today. You resisted the 69 at first but gave in after a moment. ;)

Carol Great blog today! This woman has been so annoying to me! I saw news footage of an interview with her several years ago regarding the fertility procedures she had in order to have each of her other children! She was using a slightly different name back then. An interview with her mother said she personally begged that doctor not to perform any more procedures on her daughter. He claims to not be the doctor who did. We will see.

I am not thrilled with the Duggers but at least they are a couple who takes physical responsibility for the kids they have naturally. I feel very sorry for Nadya's mother as she and Nadya's father are the ones carrying this burden and it is very unfair.

Lani said...

Hi CAROL-This must be a 1st time ever event. To have 6 children already and then give birth to 8 on top of it blows my mind. Every time I see this on the news I think how do you get up in the morning and take care of so many young children. 8 babies crying to be changed and fed, plus 6 others to help dress and feed. And that is just one part of the day. It seems physically imposible to me.

We could say it is her own personal business, however, the media has made it public, so of course people have many thoughts about the birth of these babies.

I wonder if she has any idea how much special care and time it takes to properly raise a child with special needs, so they have the best chance in life. With 8 premies will any of them have special needs. Appearently she already has 3 with disibilities.

I can't help but envision a nightmare. I hope not.

sacBarb said...

Happy Tuesday Owls.

Carol, I agree with your thoughts and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. One person cannot possible take care of 14 children all by herself. What I got out of the interview is that she seems to think all she has to do is love them and it will all work out.

I have mixed feelings about oversight of this issue. I believe that doctors have an ethical responsibility to assure that the health of the mother and babies is a priority and also to prevent abuse of the system. Having said that, I agree that government should not dictate what anyone should do with their bodies. Yes, a can of worms, indeed.

In defense of Jon & Kate, it is my understanding they did not do IVF, but did use fertility drugs to get pregnant just one more time. The older girls (twins) were conceived using fertility drugs also.

Congrats on your "no way" first today, Tina! Are you feeling better?

Carol, great blog! Am I the only one who thinks this woman is an Angelina Jolie look-alike? I think she's thinking she IS Angelina Jolie! And, it looks to me like she had her lips surgically enhanced! AND, she has gel nails and a pedicure! Well, I'm certainly glad she has the time and money to take of those things! Geez. I agree that she has some emotional issues.

I'm thinking something is shady with her doctor because it's my understanding that you have to go through all sorts of psychological, financial and living arrangement stuff when you have IVF, for the very reason that you could have multiple births. Something isn't right with this picture.

While I agree that it's super annoying that the government ends up paying for these babies, the reality is that they're here, they're innocent babies, and somehow they need to be taken care of. It's not their fault they have a goober mother ... who thinks she's Angelina Jolie. LOL

Okay, back to my makeup. I only have one eye done partly done.

Donna Jean said...

Hi Everyone!

Congrats Tina on 1-3!!!

I have been pondering over today's Blog. I have read and reread each comment.

I feel torn. On one hand I believe totally in each woman's right to choose. Right to have babies, or NOT to have babies.

On the other hand, I believe in the rights of babies to have decent, loving parents, or parent. It is an extremely delicate situation that perplexes me no end.

Can this woman adequately support these children without help, be it from the Government, or private endorsements? The obvious answer is no. So, which will it be? I am going for TV endorsements in this case. Perhaps SSI or SSA Benefits for the children who may have been born with a disability.

She will get a TV show, chronicling her daily life, and we will, if we choose to tune in, watch these precious babies grow up before our eyes.

Is this a good thing? Personally I think not. But who am I to say? No matter our personal beliefs, these 14 children are ALREADY here, alive and breathing. They must be taken care of. And if a TV show on TLC or The Discovery Channel will ensure their safety, well being and their future, then who am I to deny these children a wonderful life? In fact, it really is no ones business regarding these children that are already here.

Therein lies the dilemma. This occurence must NEVER be allowed to happen again. There must be Legislation passed immediately to protect all babies that are conceived through IVF. Even if there are couples undergoing this procedure, there should never be more than three embyros implanted, IMHO. Too many variables exist, insofar as disabilities, illnesses, premature birth.

The Dr and Clinic that implanted the embryos in this woman obviously has a stake in this, I think. Maybe they will also receive a share of the endorsements, or just outright settlement money. That is inexusable to me.

We cannot change what has already occurred, but hopefully, with all the media attention that this has generated, this will be addressed and strict rules/laws regarding IVF will be enacted.

I do hope that these children will grow up as healthy and as well-adjusted as they possibly can, and that they and their Mother will be under constant scrutiny to make sure they are treated with love and dignity.

VIG~ Yesterday's Blog Video was fantastic! EBJ sent me an email with another Video similar to that, I am sure many of you also received it. I so enjoyed both of them.

None of us can make it on our own, no matter how strong we are (or THINK we are). "Stand By Me" has always been a favorite of mine and seeing it sung this way brought me to tears.

SACBARB~ I hope you can scan your photo's or maybe take them into a Walmart or Walgreens, have them scan them and put onto a disc. I am just thinking that this can happen, I don't know if it can or not.

When we were all sending in our High School Graduation Pictures, I scanned mine and put it into a file on Word. From there I emailed it to Carol. OK, all you techies, or Owls with Techie husband's, SSO's or maybe Joey, can figure this out. I know we all would love to see the Sweetheart Photos of our Sweet SacBarb!

Well, another long post from me!

Have a wonderful day everyone. If you have sunshine, enjoy it while it lasts! Here in Santa Rosa, it is somewhat sunny, but the rains are expected back again tonight, and will last for several days, off and on. Just enough for Miss Olive to probably miss her walks!

Peace and Love to All,

CAROL...I will try not to get carried away here!

I think this woman is completely untrustworthy, selfish, thoughtless, money grubbing psycho.

She has lied and cheated. She is using her parents...what kind of example is that to 6 kids...let alone 14.

I am not a fan of the Duggars (i actually think they are a cult!!!), but the difference is that these kids DO have 2 parents that purport to love each other. They may accept donations, and the show is a job, but the dad is gainfully employed and to my knowledge, unlike Nadya is NOT already getting $490 a month in food stamps because she couldn't afford to feed the 6 she already had.

And, it speaks volumes when your own mother begged the docs not to do it and said having these kids is unconscienable. Ggrrrr.

I pray these kids are given a chance at a productive life...not neglected or abused. I hope I am wrong about the prospect of their future.

Then I could go on about the doc...

Hi Everyone....this full interview is on Dateline tonight (someone may have already mentioned it but just in case).

I have been a lurker the last few days. It was our anniversary this weekend and we had a few dinners out. We spent the whole day (and I mean the whole day) at my grandson's wrestling tournament on Sunday. He came in third and received a nice trophy..it's just a long day between matches.

I have loved the blogs that have been up. BEBBI: I have never heard that song before but really liked it.

VIG: It is nice to see how music can pull people together. It's also interesting how a song can cause so many different emotions in each one of us.

MO: I loved reading all the comments on your survey. I guess that is why I never did a blog for a year..what if there were no comments? I would be commenting and marching all day long on my own blog...thankfully, that didn't happen (thanks everyone).

CAROL: I know how you all feel about family. I am so close to my son and family and daughter and family. I am very lucky to have them close in town and to love their spouses as well. I have a nephew and niece that I am very close to also and they live in Denver too!

Brrrr...it is cold here today and gloomy. MEK, did you get that snow?

JUST/LIN: Sending hugs to you!

TINA AND ITEACH: Hope you are both fully recovered.

Thanks for the Anniversary wishes everyone.

ZONA: Are you still "crafting"? You are all so talented..

TINA: I was so worried when I was reading comments saying you might be "with child". I thought maybe it happened in Arizona and we no longer would be able to say, "what happens in Arizona stays in Arizona."

Hey gang popping in, it has been crazy here today.

I want to thank everyone for their warm welcome back comments! I meant to do that this morning but this is what depression does it floats things right out of your head and then you beat yourself up when you realize that you are so detached that you forget. Hope that makes sense.

Lani I was commenting how I think this woman is selfish. I really don't think she considered her other kids or the new kids or her parents when she made this descision. It was obviously all about her and what she wanted and what her needs were. Very sad really.

See you all later need to lay down as I have had very little sleep the last few days.

Mo,
I know how you feel, I am beyond crazed about this, your description of her is exactly how I felt...

night.owls.sb said...

Scrish,
I cannot speak for any other then myself, my being upset with Nadyas choice is because of the position she is in and the aid she will need from the government and the aid she already recieves I totally am ok with endorsements such as what the Duggers get, Jon and Kate plus 8 etc... As the government is not paying for these endorsements, big corps are.

I agree with you that a women should have her own choices what to do with her body, and gosh I would never want that taken away.
I just don't think it should be a government problem...

Perhaps Nadya will get a deal such as the Duggers etc, and have a TV show. I do know the Duggers and Jon/Kate both had jobs and a income coming into their household when they made the decision to have children..

And I do believe Nadya had her children for all the wrong reasons.

My 2 cents on the baby machine is that 14 is too many! She should have borrowed 4,6,8 babies for a week and see how she and her currant children coped! My Mother loved all 7 of us, but I know what toll it took on her health. What if something happens to the Mother? 'nuff said...

Maureen said...

Did anyone catch Super Nanny last week? The family had both parents and 10 kids in the home. The three oldest kids were robbed of their youth to basically raise the little ones. Jo made the parents give those kids back their youth. The mother also said it was her dream to have 12 kids. When Jo asked if she would sacrife the family to have another 2 kids, she said she could still have a dream, but not act on it. Maybe Nadya should have just held her dream in her heart...not in her uterus

night.owls.sb said...

Donna Jean,
I agree, there should be a limit on the embyros that are implanted, I even think there should be a limit, if someone already has children, example 6, then they should not be able to receive treatments...

It is my understanding, that treatments were for women who could not have children naturally, and that the whole process was monitored..including if they had children before..

night.owls.sb said...

Maureen,
Yes I saw Super Nanny last week, and thought she had to many as well, and again, had them for the wrong reasons, her husband is a alcoholic, and is a truck driver and on the road all the time. I really felt her having so many was a filler for needs. But you are right, at least she stopped..

Awww, thanks CAROL for missing me. I always feel like I am "here" because the blog is the first thing I pull up on my phone in the AM..except today...had major email issues and it made me grouchy!!

CAROL, did you watch the Dateline special tonight? Ours is on at 9PM so maybe yours is just on now.

MARY/MI...sounds like a heat wave for you. Is all your snow melted? How is your niece doing? I am sending postive thoughts and prayers to her daily.

ITEACH: Get better--sorry your fever came back. It's hard to be a mommy and sick too!

Dianne/Denver said...

Good Evening GOLDIE..you are on late tonight. How are those grandbabies doing?

goldie said...

Hi Dianne! I am just about to watch the dateline segment.

The babies are fine- I talked to my DIL a little while ago and they were screaching (happily) in the background. Just had bubble baths.
They will be here on March 19th until the 25!! I am so excited!!

Dianne,
THANK YOU, I did not know it was on, you would have thought I did since I am so crazed about the subject, I am watching it now..

How does someone raise 5 kids on disability and have acylics and fake lips???? Yet she takes food stamps?? sounds like fraud to me. And how did she manage to carry 14 kids if she supposedly is disabled due to a back injury?????

i am curious

Maureen said...

Living off the student loans??? How was she paying for the school?

Mary/MI said...

Hi Diane! There is still a little snow, where it had been piled sky high lol! It was a glorious day!

Jaimie, my sweet independent niece is afraid to leave her apartment. She is anxious about the upcoming court hearings with the man who attacked her. Pray, push, cross everything for her please.

I am watching the interview. The biggest thing I am getting is that she is an addict of sorts. I don't doubt that she is a loving mother, but her constant smile makes me think that she is loving all the attention. Kinda reminds me of the gal that had the humongous boobs implanted. She had them made smaller and admitted that she missed all the attention. I heard she had them enlarged again!
boobs implanted

Mary/MI said...

oops sorry for the double boobs lol!!

Dianne/Denver said...

GOLDIE: How fun to see your grandkids next month. We are so lucky. Mine are getting too big..especcially the girls. They think they are teenagers and they are 8 and 10. They want to be teenagers!!! I want them to be babies.

Need to go heat something up for my husband before he gets home from late work so he thinks I have been hanging out over the stove all day!!!

Dianne/Denver said...

MARY: Leno has had a picture on a couple of nights of that boog lady you are talking about and he said her boobs are big enough to nurse all the new 14 babies!

Mary: Sorry to hear about your niece, I hope it gets better for her.

Just watched Dateline and Nadya said something that really irritated me. When asked how she will provide for them she said being with them, loving them and holding them is providing for them and that's a lot more than a lot of other parents do. WHAT??? Oh, you mean we all had the option of staying home and "providing" for them--we didn't have to go out and work to take care of them???? How dare she!!

Then, she said she HAD to have those embryos implanted because those were her kids--how could she just let them not be born? It was unquestionable.

But, later she says if her kids had been old enough to tell her to please not have any more kids then she would have stopped. Wait--I thought it was unquestionable that she have those kids!

I think she clearly has mental issues. She has to have it all--more babies, plastic surgery, etc., etc. She's never satisfied. And when asked if she had her lips done she said no, when clearly her lips did not look like that in younger photos of her.

I really hope those babies have a chance in life. Very scary.

Sandie said...

OMG, should I erase that? Is it a spoiler if you're telling about news??

Sandie said...

I'm thinking it's not a spoiler--it doesn't feel that way. LOL

I'm sorry if anyone gets upset--just tell me and I won't do it again. Then I'll cry.

Goodnight!

(Sandie - that is NOT a spoiler - you are fine!!!!)...

night.owls.sb said...

Sandie,
No worries, that is not spoiler..

I watched and she annoyed the heck out of me, nothing she said made sense.. Raising your kids on Student loans?

Oh, and when she goes to work she will have money. How the heck is she going to go to work with 14kids...

I am stunned by this whole thing..

night.owls.sb said...

And yes I agree, she had her lips done, she probably used the student loan money for that to, or her
disability checks...

Urgggg....

LOVE these ethical issues!

DJ and SacBarb: I think the "solution", if there is such a thing, might be found with a blend of your two points of view. I'd love it if the medical profession itself would adopt a set of ethical standards that would preclude doctors from agreeing to participate. That way the babies wouldn't be conceived, saving society from having to care for them (because once they're born, I agree... the circumstances of their birth are not their fault, and they deserve a chance at a good life), but best of all, the government would still be out of the picture (no new laws would have to be passed).

Carol: Great topic today!

Hi everyone. I am back from my sorority meeting and I was finally able to upload pics from Saturday night.

I watched Dateline and I agree with whomever said she is addicted to the attention. Was it Mary? Anyway, I think she needs help in more ways than just with the children.

Mary, I am still praying for Jaimie and I have everything crossed, too.

Hugs and prayers to everyone else who needs them.

When I got home from my meeting there was a huge box in front of my door with my new sink in it. I had to drag it in the house and it is now in my living room. This kitchen update has taken on a life of it's own. ;)

I'm off to bed so I can get an early start unloading the rest of the cabinets. Sweet dreams everyone.

Ok, I watched Dateline and one of the things she mentioned was that she didn't get the love shown to her growing up that she wanted. She "knew her parents loved her but they just didn't demonstrate it." Now her parents are helping or raising her six children. I feel bad for the children and the grandparents...they have a long road ahead.

It's 2:15AM here and I don't want to march to 169 from 130...so since I am the only one around--I will just call it 169!!! I am pretty sneaky getting the 69's :)
