Questions that make you think

by Shirley

My niece Katie is going to a bible college out in BC. She recently contacted me and asked if I would help with an assignment. She assured me no one was going to try to convert me from an atheist to a christian. Lol! I told her I would help. She sent me 7 questions saying that the assignment had to be 6-8 pages so I could make my answers as long as I wanted. As I read and thought about them I wondered what the Night Owls would think...so what do you think? I love hearing what you guys think about stuff. Sometimes the opinions vary and sometimes they are almost identical.

1. What do you believe about God?
2. What do you believe about the universe?
3. What do you believe about the nature of human beings?
4. What do you believe about life and death?
5. How do we get knowledge?
6. How do you determine right from wrong?
7. What is the meaning of history?

Wow! Very interesting blog shirley~ I don't have time to write all that I would...but here's my short answers~

1. What do you believe about God? I believe He is the creator of all things and loves us unconditionally.
2. What do you believe about the universe? I believe it was created by God.
3. What do you believe about the nature of human beings? I believe that all people are good. With some, you just have to dig a little deeper to find it. Remember, all of us started as a child loved (hopefully) by their parents.
4. What do you believe about life and death? I believe in life after death. I believe that Heaven is a billion times better than any of us could ever imagine.
5. How do we get knowledge? From life......from our parents, teachers, family, friends (not always good!), and from just living...making mistakes and learning from them~
6. How do you determine right from wrong? WWJD?~
7. What is the meaning of history? man i can't stand the subject, but it's something that we should, and usually don't, learn from~

shirley....you're gonna have me thinking about this all day~

Oh, Lord. Shirley and Tina are entangled again! LOL!

OK, Shirley, here goes:

What do you believe about God? I believe that a higher power could have had a hand in sculpting the universe, since we know that the universe as it exists today has evolved from an initial state that would be totally unrecognizable to us (a tiny speck of energy, quarks, and gluons that was almost infinitely hot and dense). Since today's version of the universe evolved (or, if you will, was created) out of this initial state, I can't rule out that a creator played a role in setting it all up, and even carefully sculpted those initial conditions so that we humans would be the eventual product.

However, there is no evidence that a divine "helping hand" actually did play such role. And I see no evidence that if such an entity exists, it has any personal relation with us.

2. What do you believe about the universe? I try not to "believe" anything, because belief, by definition, involves supposition. A better question would be "what do you know about the universe", because I always strive to know more. But see my answer to question 3.

3. What do you believe about the nature of human beings?

Define "nature". Whether we are inherently good or evil? Whether we are a deliberate creation by God (in which case, the Universe was created as a stage for humans to occupy)? That belief seems awfully egocentric for a universe as mind-numbingly large as ours.

4. What do you believe about life and death? No "belief" is necessary here. Human beings are assemblages of neural circuits that enable them to think and act. As long as those assemblages exist, we're alive. As soon as the assemblages break down into a form that no longer supports these activities, we're dead. We cease to exist.

5. How do we get knowledge? That's easy: From careful thought, analysis, observation, and experimentation. I reject the position that there is any other legitimate way to get knowledge.

6. How do you determine right from wrong? The golden rule is a good start. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

7. What is the meaning of history? That, just like the universe, we are a work in progress. We are evolving.

Dang Shirley, that's all so deep. My brain can't do that at this point of my day. :( Sorry!!!

Looking at Tina and Bear's answers, I think we all do share a lot of beliefs.

Happy day Owls!!

Morning Glories!

Congrats on first Tina!

Shirley I will try to answer the questions asked after I have time to process them and this morning it is not going to happen. I am very tired and have more paperwork and then a meeting at 10 am.

So I am going to let my brain steep some of these questions and see what floats to the top.

I do agree with Bear on the Golden Rule if we all used this as our standard and really lived by that concept the world as a whole would be a much better place.

Will check back later.

Morning NN and Whabby and Tina.

Good Morning Hooters and of course #1 tina~

Very thought provoking blog Shirley. At first glance, much easier than after contemplation. I will have to get back to those when I have more time, because I don't think I can answer in short sentences.

Hope everyone has a great day today!

Good Morning Tina, Whabbear, Lois, Lynn and Shirley.

Shirley = Wow, Shirley that's quite an assignment before my eyes and brain are really functioning. All I know is that I believe in God, heaven and being kind to people. That is what my parents, school and church taught me to be. I will think about this and be back later. I have 'fur babies' to feed. Have a great day everyone.

Hi Yall.....

God....its a name that people call their higher power whatever that higher power may be..

Universe.....I know its big and I believe there are other civilizations out there...and it wasn't created by any hocus pocus..

Human Beings....easily trained...respond well to treats..very gullible and infinitely ignorant....as I am..

Life and Death....if there is life after death you'll know it when you die....if theres not....you'll never know the difference. But I don't believe in heaven or certainly not hell....or eternal damnation because you didn't live by Gods threat as outlined in the bible......the bible is an ok instruction manual...written by men....who made up stuff as they went along depending on the situation at the time....just as christians pick and choose scripture to support what they want and don't want these days...

I'll go with whabbears answers on 5 & 6......and basically 7......the only thing that I would add is that we have seen in our history things that are wrong and don't work...and I am talking about christians here....yet they want to repeat the same mistakes.
And if you have read the bible...then you might surmise as things stand....the GOP and Evangelical Christians have done everything but proclaim "Holy War"..

Here is some copy from Huffington Post......and a video...you should watch it.....with Rachel Maddow...

Apparently, the latest thing in "Debasing The Institutions You Pretend To Hold Dear In Order To Suggest That President Barack Obama Should Be Murdered Without Actually Coming Right Out And Saying So" goes by a shorter name: Psalm 109:8.

And Psalm 109:8 is just straight up memetastic, appearing on bumper stickers and T-shirts, all of which carry the benign sounding message, "Pray For Obama." But, as Gawker's John Cook points out, this is just one more in a "long line of cheekily coded Obama death threats." The verse in question reads: "May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership." That leads fairly naturally into the Psalm 109:9, "May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow." You know, in case you miss the point.

Rachel Maddow took up this issue last night, inviting Patience With God author and Huffington Post blogger Frank Schaeffer to explain whether or not the citation of this Biblical text "means something less threatening to people hearing this in a Biblical context."

Praying for Obamas death! The very idea......watch the video....

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/34004795#34004795

I know I always go off on the same tangent....but I basically stay pissed off about the shape that peoples brains are in these days
and I blame all the off-shoot religions and so called christians and their silly Gods for holding people down and holding back progress......

BTW....My "God" is pissed as well....

Good Afternoon!

SHIRLEY: ok..here we go..

1. What do you believe about God? That He loves us and wants us to be happy. I also believe that He hears and answers all prayers..it's just that sometimes the answers aren't the ones we want to hear..but they are always what is best for us in the long run.

2.What do you believe about the universe?
That God was the sole creator of all that is around us.

3.What do you believe about the nature of human beings?
That they are inherently good.

4.What do you believe about life after death?
I believe in Heaven..and like TINA wrote..I don't think the word Paradise even begins to describe it.

5.How do we get knowledge?
From those that have gone through what we haven't..and from making mistakes.

6.How do you determine right from wrong?
My conscience is my guide..and it tells me..Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

7.What is the meaning of history? I think it helps us to look back on what has happened before so we don't make the same mistakes twice.

Happy Thursday Owls.

Tina I thought Shirley was going to beat you out for first today. Shirley must have slept in. Well, congrats anyway.

Shirley, These sure are thought provoking questions. And coincidentally I just got back from seeing a one woman cabaret show all about what Catholics believe called "Til Death Do Us Part (Late Night Catechism)." It was a humorous adaptation of all the stuff I learned in Catholic School.

So, all levity aside, my beliefs are very similar to Tina's and Zona's.

1. & 2. I believe God created the universe and us and he loves us.

3. I believe there is good in everyone.

4. I believe that heaven is paradise and hell is the absence of everything we love, but not necessarily fire and brimstone.

5. We get knowledge from our life experiences and from all the people in our lives that teach us.

6. I believe in the golden rule.

7. If we paid attention to history we wouldn't make the same mistakes again, however it seems that doesn't happen. Either we have short memories or we aren't smart enough to make those connections between what has happened in the past and what we are doing now. Hence, the phrase "history repeats itself" is so true.

This, in short, is what I believe.

Maureen said...

SHIRLEY...whoa! That is a deep blog. Lemme see if I can put it into words.

1. What do you believe about God?
I believe that G-D is divine. He or she watches and listens. I don't think he judges, but gently...well not always so gently...leads. I do believe there is a reason for all that happens even though I usually don't understand the reason at the time. I think he really only gives us what we can handle and what will make us stronger. Unless we refuse to believe it. TINA, Jewish people believe in G-D, too! I also believe G-D gently lead me into the parking lot of China Moon tonight and led me to the counter to order the egg rolls I just had for dinner!

2. What do you believe about the universe?
It is vast...much bigger then can be imagined yet made small by the connections we make with each other. I also believe there is a whole part of the universe that exists out there.

3. What do you believe about the nature of human beings?
I believe that we are all born as loving, caring and good people. But it is nurture that turns people into crazy assholes that do terrible things. I don't think anyone is born a killer or a hater or a racist or bigot. It is learned.

4. What do you believe about life and death?
We live until we don't anymore. In many ways, life is what you make it. I don't know if I am scared of death or just scared of the process.

5. How do we get knowledge?
From those that came before us, from experience, from making mistakes and from being open to listen and asking questions.

6. How do you determine right from wrong?
It should be inate and nurtered from birth. I agree with WHABBY...the golden rule is a darn good place to start. However, sadly too many children are treated badly from birth and don't know that certain behaviors are wrong. To them it is equated with love. And the behavior gets passed down to the next generations. So sad.

7. What is the meaning of history?
Anything that happened prior to this very moment. It can't be ignored. It should be revered and used to learn from. Our actions create our own histories, so we should keep that in mind in all we do.

Oy, I am exhausted now!! SHIRLEY, can you make me a snack? LOL!

Shirley...I read the blog this morning and have kinda been debating if I wanted to answer. The first question is what gave me pause. I have known what I believe about God for years and years. This summer it changed. I am angry at God. Very angry. I belive(d) in him. I thought that we should live our lives trying our best to keep the commandments, be good to and help others and God would watch over us. My mother took care of her mother and father, back to back. She didn't have much of her own life that she enjoyed. Yet she died a horrible screaming death. Why did God let that happen?? Sorry...can't do the rest of the questions

Maureen said...

WHABBY...I was interested to read your take on these questions, since you are a scientist. Your responses were pretty much as I expected.

DEE DEE...people that claim reigious superiority and then pray for the death of our President...or anyone makes me wanna gag

Maureen said...

SCIRISH...I have wondered the same things. How can a G-D be so cruel sometimes. How can he make children suffer? Like I said there is some reason, but we just don't understand it. Maybe we never will, but I guess we have to accept it and be thankful for the beautiful things G-D does.

Maureen said...

SACBARB...I am envious that you could say that in such a succint manner! I realize I wrote a novel!

night.owls.sb said...

Maureen said...

CAROL...to the point. not a bunch of adjectives or needless words!!

scirish said...

Mo...I did mean to write something like you said about there being so many others that suffer, and that does not seem right either. For me, right now, it's personal. I will NEVER forget her fucking screams and never forget that I ( and Hospice) couldn't help her.

Maureen said...

SCIRISH...you have every right to feel the way you do. I think the worst things we can witness are the suffering our loved ones have to endure. You are grieving and there is no time limit on that. Grief takes on whatever you need it to be. I hope I didn't insinuate that I thought bad of what you wrote. I would never mean to negate your feelings. I'm sorry if it came across as that. {{HUGS}}

night.owls.sb said...

I totally believe God was our creator. However I believe each person has a different God and therefore there are many religious beliefs. I also believe God is good and not evil.

The Universe, big, very big, much more than I can ever imagine. What is all out there I may never know. I do believe the creation started with God

Maureen said...

Everyday I read cases at work about our pediatric patients and my heart breaks. How can an innocent child be put thru some of the things they endure. And the babies that are taken way before their time...before they get a chance to live a life. Makes no sense, but I guess there is a reason I will never understand

night.owls.sb said...

Human beings.. Sadly I have to say I don't believe all humans are good ppl and or good natured. There is to much hateful things that go on for me to believe otherwise. What I am happy to say is that there are more good
natured ppl then bad..

Life, goes on not matter what!

Death, the soul continues forever

night.owls.sb said...

Right or Wrong.. This is tough one, I think you have to be a good judge of character to know what is right from wrong. But the circumstance would have to determine my saying if its right or wrong and the person I am dealing with..

not sure if the above makes sense...

Maureen said...

nope, makes no sense!!!! bwahahahaha!! just kidding!

I think we should give SHIRLEY some more questions to ponder...

1. Do you believe that the author of the blog should be allowed to be first on his or her own blog?

2. Is it right or wrong to deny DIANNE in DENVER her holiday pancakes?

3. Is cheaqting as bad as cheating?

4. Should certain BIRDEEs be allowed to poop all over our cars and nest?

Is bacon just has good if its shaved off Mo's arse then when bought in a supermarket?

Is it wrong to call Tina the Queen Crackwhore?

scirish said...

I thought that starting this train of writing might be a bad thing and I was right....I have so much more venom to spew that I think I will go to my journal thingy and spare the blog.

Shirley...Short answers to the rest:

I only know about the universe I inhabit...There might be someone in another one saying the very same thing.

I think humans are made of parts, and every once in a while, somebody gets a bad part.

Err...Think I'll skip number 4

Knowledge is: Reading, watching, listening and most of all, having your mind open and ready to receive new information.

Your "gut" will tell you if something is wrong...problem is, you have to listen...

History is made up of the "stories" of life that someone tells. Doesn't matter when, history could have been made yesterday....

4. I believe there is life after death. And like TINA I'm sure that I can't even begin to imagine how incredible Heaven is. I also believe that I will be with all those that have passed before me again. And for this I am thankful!!!

Shirley These are very deep questions that require serious consideration. I'm running around here getting things ready for when I'm gone so I haven't had time to really sit down and think about this. Plus, I have mostly thought of myself as agnostic but I've been doing some reading and am trying to educate myself on many of the questions you ask. I am still a work in progress. I am starting to see "the light", so to speak. I think heaven is so different from anything within our realm of experience, that we can't even come close to understanding it. We are very, very, limited and flawed human beings. I don't think we are expected to be perfect and sinless beings but I think we are expected to try our best to be so. If we had been perfect and sinless, we'd still be living in the paradise of the Garden of Eden, I suppose.

Tina~in_ut said...

Now J/L~ I just want to make sure you're clear on one thing~ It's all fine and good if you see the light....but please, don't walk toward it! :)~

I'm cheered, owls! Nobody today argued that they believe that God created the Earth in literal correspondence with the story of Genesis, that is, in the last several thousand years! Why does that cheer me up? Well, if we all accept the basic premise that the Universe is over 13 billion years old, and the Sun and the Earth are 4.5 billion years old, then those of you who believe strongly in God, and those like myself who are skeptical, have some very interesting common ground!

What am I talking about? Science is in total agreement with the basic notion behind Genesis that the Universe is a work of creation, in the sense that the Universe hasn't existed for ever; the seed that became the universe burst into existence at a very precise point in the past.

It didn't have to be that way. Many scientists of the last century, including Albert Einstein, preferred a "steady state" model in which the universe had always existed in pretty much the state we find it today. That's how uncomfortable the alternative notion of creation made these scientists.

Still, as more and more evidence poured in, all scientists eventually had to cave in and fully accept that the universe popped into existence (though, again, what popped into existence wasn't what we see today. The one had to evolve into the other).

So now, scientists, too, have to entertain the question of whether the creation of the Universe included a role for an intelligent entity (AKA God). Lots of you have said today that you do indeed believe that God created the universe, and I said earlier that I couldn't rule the idea out. That's our common ground.

And recently, things have been getting rather interesting on that particular piece of shared real estate!

The Big Bang-based theory of the evolution of the universe was first proposed early in the 20th century. Over time, as the theory gained more and more support, scientists become more and more aware of an astonishing fact associated with it.

To evolve from it's weird initial state into the Universe we see today, many fundamental forces have to be almost identical to the values that we find them to be. For example, gravity is a very, very precise force that can be measured to a very high level of precision. If the force of gravity was even a teeny, tiny bit stronger or weaker than it is, the universe would never have evolved into anything remotely resembling a place where intelligence of any sort could emerge. The same is true for the electromagnetic force that keeps a balloon sticking to our stomach after rubbing it, and for the strong force that holds the nucleus of the atom together, and the... trust me, the list goes on!

It is as if these fundamental forces have been very, very precisely fine-tuned to produce a specific outcome.

Does that suggest or imply a "fine tuner"? Perhaps!

SCIRISH: The things I watched my mom go through were horrific. I prayed so hard..and cried myself to sleep night after night. I screamed at God..begged Him..pleaded with Him..I just wanted him to make her better. In the end He took her home to be with Him. I finally had to ask myself..maybe He didn't answer my prayers..because He answered hers. I know how it hurts and my heart hurts for you..

Bear I am not a historian nor am I "up" on all that is in the Bible, however if it says in Genesis that the earth was created a few thousand years ago, could that not be true, just not a time period that we are attributing to it? In time dilation did we not see that two different time periods can be going on simultaneously. A Creator could have had billions of years to create what is referred to as created in a few thousand years.

Sorry to post and run....but I'm leaving for the movie in 12 minutes!!

SCIRISH - I thank God everyday that I didn't have to watch my Mom suffer. I'm not so sure that I will have that luxury with my Dad. (((hugs))) to you!!!

Jodi said...

ZONA - I believe that maybe God took my Mom when He did to take away her pain. The pain of living without her youngest for 11 years. Thankfully my faith is such that I know I will see them both again!!

Zona said...

JODI: I hope the movie is terrific..I'm going to start the books tomorrow.. :)

night.owls.sb said...

I want to say thank you to Tina, Whabbear, No Newz, Lynn D, Goldie, Tinka, DeeDee, Zona, Carol, SacBarb, Maureen, Scirish, Jodi and Just Lin for your comments on these questions.

Sorry Scirish that you got upset. I know from the last couple day how difficult it is to watch someone in pain and not be able to do anything and I know it is going to get worse. (((HUGS))) to you .

Maureen said...

HODI...have fun at the movies!

Jodi said...

ZONA - You will LOVE the books!!! Happy reading!!!

I'll check in after the movie!!!

Just_Lin said...

Zona (((HUGS)))

I'm thankful that my husband was on so much morphine at the end that he just slipped farther and farther away. I really do believe that we should have a more humane way to help people pass on, rather than let them suffer.

Zona said...

JODI: I believe there is always a reason for the way things happen..I always thought that He allowed my mom to stay here until we were ready to let go.

I still picture Janet and my mom on that bridge..boy are we gonna have a lot of explaining to do! :){{{hugs}}}

Just_Lin said...

Jodi Have fun! Did you know there is a whole organized group of moms that are following the movie?

Zona said...

MO: Send snow here! I love it..well..that's because I don't have to shovel it! ;)

Just_Lin said...

Carol NO. Atheist means they do not believe in a God, Creator, Buddah, whatever. No higher power of any sort whatsoever.

Tina~in_ut said...

Mo~ getting snow tomorrow night and all weekend...then gonna send it to Di~ ...a belated b-day present! :)~

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Carol to answer you question to Just Lin...I don't believe in a higher power.

Maureen said...

We have a young woman that has metastized cancer in many parts of her body. When the nurse talked to her about Hospice her reply was she discussed it with her husband and he said he didn't think she was ready for that...because HE was not ready for that.

We often forget just how catastrophic illness effects those that love the person, too.

JUST LIN...I agree. There should be a better way to help our loved ones go with dignity.

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...
