Fish Story

by Zona

Sometimes when I hear my friends talking about going on cruises..I think 'That really sounds like fun!' Di had a great time when she went...Tinka and Mary did too...so why wouldn't Mr. Z and I? I usually entertain this thought for a moment or two..until I remember how afraid I am of the ocean. Well..not the ocean exactly...what lives IN the ocean. There are huge fish lurking just beneath the surface of those beautiful blue waters...fish like the Whale Shark. The biggest confirmed Whale Shark was over 41 ft long..but there have been unconfirmed reports of larger ones. Larger ones? I just shiver at the thought! I was looking at Yahoo News the other day and came across a slideshow of a diver swimming near this massive fish. That was all I needed to see. I understand that it's a gentle giant..I get that it doesn't eat other fishies..well not on purpose..since it's mouth is about six feet wide..it might do it accidentally..I really do understand all that..but it's so dang BIG..and it's swimming in the ocean.....somewhere... I can't help it..that scares me! So if anyone wonders why I won't ever, ever, ever go on a cruise..or go sailing..or swim more than 5 ft from shore..well..check out these pictures...cuz that's the reason....

Here is a refresher on Lucy's death...

On Tuesday April 18th, she was at her home of a hundred and twelve years at 1000 N. Roxbury, in Beverly Hills, when she started experiencing chest pains. Her husband, Gary Morton, called the ambulance, and she was rushed to the Emergency Room of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she underwent bypass surgery for eight hours. She received an aorta, from a 27 year old male victim of a motorcycle crash.

By Wednesday, 14 hours after surgery, Lucy awakened, and asked Gary Morton, "How's the dog doing?" Telling, isn't it? He released this quote: "Her Irish eyes are smiling." Hollywood went nuts with get well wishes. Just across the street from the hospital, the Hard Rock Café erected a huge sign, for Lucy. Anyway. All signs were looking good for ol' Lu, when "suddenly and without warning" the aorta burst. Doctors said (no doubt, scared shitless about a lawsuit) that the rupture occurred far from where a portion of her aortic valve was replaced during surgery last week. Wherever it burst was irrelevant. On Wednesday the 26th of April 1989, at 6am, the world became Lucy-less. She was 77 years old.

I think it would be thrilling to swim with one of those gentle giants...well other than the fact that they defecate indiscriminately and you can become engulfed in a cloud of whale shark doo....

and ya know you always hear how great it is to swim with dolphins? Well I saw a girl in the water with "flipper" and flipper was a good name for the dolphin because he let loose a slick of dolphin doo on the surface of the water and used his tail to flip it right into her face!

I'm telling ya! These sea creatures are extremely ill mannered and just plain filthy at times!

Lisa was nuts about whales and she leaned out of the boat one day to kiss one and you know the blow hole? Well it blew...knocked her sun glasses off and wet her entire head! And thats not just water! That is whale "processed" water!!

And I was swimming once in a ocean feed pool of rocks....and there was something covering the bottom of that pool....I could feel them with my feet...well I brought one up with my foot and it was this rust colored crab with pinchers as big as all get out! He was the vicious kind too!

I threw that crab into the air and screamed at the top of my lungs!! HELP! HEELP! Finally I was helped out of the water so that my feet didn't have to risk being mauled.

The pretty fish and stuff are at the top and they lure you in and the bad stuff is just a little deeper! So don't be fooled....those little buggers have a plan!!

The pretty little supposedly sweet fishies divert you attention while the sharks move in and the octopus gets a grip on your ankles so the crabs can get your toes...and thats just at knee depth! Don't go waist deep and risk your willy!! And I am not even going to say what happens to a guys nipples in neck deep water! OMG!

wait...that may have been a pleasant experience....

then we have our Tina Cousteau....snorkeling in Hawaii...sneezed and sucked 2 clown fish into her mouth...then butt-smooched a sea turtle before she got her wits about her!

Tell me that didn't scare the poop outta those wittle fishes and that toituls...!

so it goes both ways....us/fish...fish/us...

Tina You look so lovely (and tan) today. If I was willing to get into a swim suit, I might like snorkeling but, alas, I'm not. Glad you enjoyed it, though.

Zona I LOVE cruising! I also don't go in the ocean even though I live one mile from it. I also was very hesitant the first time I went on a cruise for all the same reasons as you. But I decided the adventure would be worth it, plus my not-yet-husband offered to pay for a second cabin next to us for my mother. We went on a caribbean cruise and had a ball!

Just_Lin said...

LynnD Just remember, the object of a cruise is to be on the water, not in it. ;)

Just_Lin said...

iteach It's like being in a high-class hotel. I think you'd really like it.

Just_Lin said...

Michael I can't remember now it it was on Maui or Oahu but we sat with our feet in a stream/pool of water that had come from a waterfall and all these tiny fish were nibbling on our feet and toes. It tickled so much!

LOL @ Alfred Hitchcocks. I never heard them called that before.

Hi Guys!

TINA: Snorkeling sounds like fun too..I might be able to do that..if the fishies were really little..not sure..but maaaaybee..

MICHAEL: You have to remember the way I am..If I go on a cruise..I'm positive that some way or another I would find a way to trip and fall over the railing and into the ocean..so..for me at least..being on a cruise would eventually be the same as being in the water..lol..

The octopus grabs your ankles?? Oh geez..never mind about maybe looking at the little fishies...

LYNN: Definitely gives me the creeps too!! Especially that mouth..it's huge!! Yikes!

ITEACH: I think it'll be dry land for me from here on out..except for the swimming pool! :)

J/LIN: Going on a cruise always sounds like so much fun to me..until I start hearing the theme from Jaws in my head! DI told me there was a perfect solution to my fear of falling overboard..don't go up on deck..LOL! The boat could still tip though!! I think I've seen too many movies.. ;)

Thanks for the comments! I hope everyone is having a good day! :)

I am trying to figure out where I have seen that pattern on the fish before. I think it was a Prada purse.

Dianne/Denver said...

ZONA: For the 300th time...you don't jump or fall overboard on a cruise. You would have to be standing like the movies to fall. Now on a second note....I would not want to go into the water with the sweet little/big shark or any fish for that matter....so I am with you on that part....but cruising.....THE BEST!!

MICHAEL: Thanks for the story on Lucy. I didn't remember it. I really (like most) loved her. You always have so much trivia.. I wouldn't want to play that game with you.

TINA: Welcome home. How was the trip....awesome? I hope things were quiet on the home front when you arrived. I think we cleaned up pretty good after all the parties!!!!

We are heading out to Blackhawk to do a little donating to colorado taxes through slot machines and dinner. We are getting a much later start that planned but I was sleepy from going to Tim McGraw concert last night. It was outside and perfect weather and a great concert. I really enjoy those in a nice evening setting.

Hello to everyone and hope all are doing well. Wish me luck that I win like MARY and then I will take us all to lunch for MICHAEL'S birthday!!!

Just_Lin said...

Dianne Good luck with the slots tonight. That's another thing I like to do on the ship, play the slots in the casino.

Just_Lin said...

Zona Remember that the railings are a) solid, like a wall, and b) chest high. There is no way you would accidentally fall overboard. You'd have to climb up on top of it before that could happen.

Just_Lin said...

LynnD Don't let Michael hear me say this but, regarding that photo, perhaps it is photoshopped? Just an thought...

Just_Lin said...

LynnD Maybe the fish is close and the diver is actually way off in the distance.

I once had a cat named "Small" and that's because she was, well, very small. She never got bigger than a 5 month old kitten. Anyway, a strange Persian cat showed up one day in my yard and walked into my house as if he owned the place. This did not go over too well with all my other cats but the Persion couldn't have cared less. I took a photo of him as he sat on a table. Small was actually sitting in the hall in the background but the way the pic turned out, it looked like Small was a 2 inch tall cat sitting next to a large cat. LOL

Zona, That really looks scary. I have never been a fan of deep bodies of water, and have never had a desire to go on a cruise. I have many friends that have told me how wonderful they are, but I will stick to terra firma, tyvm.

THIS IS NOT A PHOTOSHOPPED PHOTO!!

I saw a video of a small sub pass along the body of a whale shark and using their speed and how long the whale sharks skin was in the window they determined the thing to be 35ft long....

they reach sexual maturity at around 30 and live 70-100 years.

They are playful and pose no threat to humans other than the one I outlined above.

Unless ur plankton u have nothing to fear!

glares at J/L...
