32 Flavors (and we're not talking Baskins and Robbins!!!)

Chosen by Vig

I was listening to Ani DiFranco last night, who's music I don't know that well but the songs that I do know blow me away. She is a true poet and metaphor magician. I was inspired by her songs to write a my Myspace status update about the music and musician I was listening to. Carol picked up on this and suggested Ani for a blog. A fabulous idea I thought and as '"32 Flavors" is probably one of her most recognizable songs and one of my favourites, that would be my choice of songs. To me it says that we are all unique, have many levels to us, show to people what we want them to see and that we don't need to change for anyone else. The last one a lesson I'm still learning! Have a listen - what do you think?

SCIRISH...you go girl!! Gratz on 1 again!

I was hoping it was about ice cream!

VIG...I can't listen, but if you like this song then it must be good.

BONACCI...from area 51, I never meant to imply that YOU were refering to the Roloffs. That was just an adventure my sick mind made. I know you wouldn't mean to offend them or anyone.

Morning Mo...I can't listen to the song yet either...SOME people are still sleeping. I don't know why...Just 'cause it's a gloomy, grey Sunday...Sheesh!

scirish said...

Bonacci...I could probably dig up a teenager or two to help you with your research...

scirish said...

Bonacci...I give up!! What is a bridee in weird English??? Is it a Bride in training? Google doesn't know either...

Good Morning Everyone. I will be back in an hour to read the blog and comments. I just wanted to check in and tell everyone "Hello".

Good morning scrish (congrats on #1), Mo and Tink. VIG, 32 Flavors. What a great metaphor.

Mo, I work with a little person and he's very blunt about being so. It never crossed my mind that anyone here would be insensitive.

Scrish, thanks for the teenager offer, but I'm not an alien researcher. Just a victim of them.

A bridee is a light flaky pastry filled with some kind of meat mixture. Like a meat pie. I've only seen them in Scotland and England.

bonachichi said...

Scrish, I wondered why you couldn't find bridee on google. I tried different spellings (bridie, bridey) and thought you might be interested in this: http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-bri1.htm

Good Morning VIG - Nice talking to you on your walk this morning. Isn't it a lovely day? I listened to the video. That is the first time I have heard her. She is very good. I agree with your analysis of the song. We don't need to change for anyone else.

I am so far behind in reading blogs I think I am going to have to start fresh. This flu is not a pleasant one. I am waiting for a diagnosis to see if I am now a statistic.

Scrish, I can't believe you have any frame of reference other than meat pie!

The first time I saw one the word "pastie" was used to describe it. To me, that means "meat pie", but when I said that, I apparently insulted the lady selling them.

Here's another confusing one... Salad Cream. What a stupid name for a condiment you use on sandwiches!

Just_Lin said...

Scirish Hey, congrats on first, again. You're on a roll!

Tinka Congrats on 25 and 30. I'm glad you're feeling a little perkier. Enjoy your time in the sunshine. So far, we just had overcast skies today.

VIG Thank you for the lovely song today. I'd never heard of her before.

Waving at Bonacci, too. Are any of your pretend people still living or have you knocked them all off. LMAO!

Happy Sunday Everyone!

VIG/AN: I've never heard of Ani DiFranco..nor heard her music, but I liked this song. I like folk music for the deep messages that come from the artists. It's a soothing type of music that really makes you think.

This song really hit home for me cuz I have been struggling with changing some things about myself that others find annoying. It's really a difficult thing to do. At my age, I don't know if it's even possible. Sometimes I want to stop trying to change and just BE..ya know? For me, accepting myself for who I am is one of the hardest lessons I've ever tried to learn. Maybe someday I will.

Thanks for introducing me to Ani DiFranco VIG..great blog!

MR Z is calling me for something or another..so I'll bbiab...Have a great day everyone!!

Hi Owls...thanks for comments on Ani! (pronounced 0n -ee). I love her music. Since she is new to a lot of you, here's a little info:

DiFranco was born in Buffalo, New York, to mother Elizabeth and father Dante, both graduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[6][7] She started playing Beatles covers at local bars and busking with her guitar teacher, Michael Meldrum,[8] at the age of nine.
In 1989, DiFranco started her own record company, Righteous Records (renamed Righteous Babe Records in 1994).[2] Prior to the renaming of Righteous Records to Righteous Babe Records, DiFranco worked with manager Dale Anderson, a writer for the Buffalo News, who later started another record label called Hot Wings Records when the two parted ways. Hot Wings released the work of Buffalo area female musical performers with styles similar to that of DiFranco. Early releases of her CDs produced prior to 1994 are labeled with the original Righteous Records label. Her self-titled debut album was issued on the label in the winter of 1990. Later, she relocated to New York City, where she took poetry classes at The New School and toured vigorously.
DiFranco identifies herself as bisexual,[9][10] and has written songs about love and sex with both genders. She addressed the controversy about her sexuality with the song "In or Out". In 1998, she married sound engineer Andrew Gilchrist in a Unitarian Universalist service in Canada, overseen by U.U. minister Utah Phillips. Numerous media sources reported that her fans felt betrayed by her union with a man.[11] DiFranco and Gilchrist divorced five years later.
In 1998, DiFranco's drummer, Andy Stochansky, left the band to pursue a solo career as a singer-songwriter. Their rapport during live shows is showcased on the 1997 album Living In Clip.
DiFranco's father died early in the summer of 2004.[12] In July 2005, DiFranco developed tendinitis and took a hiatus from touring. DiFranco had toured almost continuously in the preceding fifteen years, only taking brief breaks to record studio albums. Her 2005 tour concluded with an appearance at the FloydFest World Music and Genre Crossover festival in Floyd, Virginia. DiFranco returned to touring in late April 2006, including a performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on April 28 and a performance at the renowned Calgary Folk Music Festival on July 30, 2006.
DiFranco gave birth to a daughter, Petah Lucia DiFranco Napolitano,[13] at her Buffalo home on January 20, 2007. The child's father is DiFranco's new husband, Mike Napolitano,[14] the co-producer of DiFranco's 2006 release Reprieve. Essentially a full-time resident of New Orleans, DiFranco is heavily influenced by the city's post-Katrina plight.[15][16]

And the lyrics to "32 Flavors":

"32 Flavors"

squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
and I'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you're going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said

both my parents taught me about good will
and I have done well by their names
just the kindness I've lavished on strangers
is more than I can explain
still there's many who've turned out their porch lights
just so I would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
til I'd passed and left them alone

and god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a pheonix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying back

I'm not trying to give my life meaning
by demeaning you
and I would like to state for the record
I did everything that I could do
I'm not saying that I'm a saint
I just don't want to live that way
no, I will never be a saint
but I will always say

squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cause someday you might find you're starving
and eating all of the words you said

Zona, the rally I wrote about is something I did every year for 7 years. I saw things I just couldn't believe. I met people I never dreamed existed. I did things I would never consider normally. The conditions are terrible, you're exhausted and sore. It was one of the funnest jobs I've ever had, and I'd do it all again.

VIG Great lyrics! Thanks for posting them. I couldn't hear them all on the vid.

Happy Sunday hooters!

VIG this is a great song! I have never heard of Ani Di Franco before.

I have heard a cover of this song performed by Alana Davis, it is good too!

Today I have gone grossry shopping, got car washed and filled up with gas, made a home made cheesecake, have dinner made and cooked (I made stuffed shells and baked them already, as it is gonna be a HOT afternoon). And have the last load of laundry in!

So now I am catching up on the blog. Had a hellish week at work and a busy Saturday. Now I can relax the rest of the day.

Bonacci your blog yesterday was so interesting! What an exciting, adventurous life you have.

Congrats for no longer being a blog writing virgin!

Nancy the kitty is trouble with a capital T. She is so mischievous and a complete dare devil.

We have to watch her constantly. Today she jumped into the dryer as I was putting in some wet clothes.

I have caught her in Poe's cage, she can pull herself up into it now.

She did her disappearing act a couple days ago that I posted about (MR. EBJ searched the house frantically for her. After 3 hours found her asleep in one of the legs of a pair of his pants).

She has grown so much, now 7 1/2 weeks old. And eats like a horse!

I received the book "The Necklace" from Jodi, I haven't started it yet but hopefully will today or tomorrow.

I will check back later! Hope everyone is having a nice day!

Just_Lin said...

EBJ You have accomplished so much today! You put me to shame. I don't even know what I'm having for dinner, let alone cooked it already. Yes, you are going to have to keep a very close eye on Nancy. The dryer? Yikes!

Phew, I am exhausted from all the work EBJ has done already! Nancy sounds like a handful! I am thinking that means she is a healthy, curious and adventurous kitty!

VIG...thanks for the lyrics. They are wonderful. I usually google the lyrics every SUnday of the vid, but hadn't gotten to it yet. Thanks!

TINKA...I hope you are back to feeling 100% soon.

ZONA...you are YOU and that is the you we love.

Bonacci...I think it is somewhere down south where mayonnaise is called "salad dressing" so I guess salad cream could be a natural progression...

I have read about those pasty things...Apparently they are a source of pride by region and there have been many grand discourses on just what ingredients make the perfect pasty/pastie/bridee. I guess the name must matter as well....

TINKA - It is a beautiful day here, too!! We're finally getting some warmer, sunny days!!

bonachichi said...

iteach, I usually ride in a van or something practical, following the actual Rally participants. I've hitched rides in some interesting vehicles...

A Bugatti was the most expensive. The worst was a Ferrari Scaglietti because it has a joke for a back seat. My knees were next to my eyeballs. An ice cream truck, an ambulance, a 3-wheeled (2 cylinder)job that reminded me of the Flintstones and assorted recycled police cars.

The best car of all though, is the one that makes regular bathroom stops.

Hello Hooters!!!!

I;m back from the weekend at the camper and it was WONDERFUL and relaxing. Got home around 2 and had 2 graduation parties in the neighborhood- so don't have to make dinner tonight- we ate 2 full meals! Afterwards we went on an 1 and 1/2 hour walk with Pepper to lose some of those calories.

Haven't read the blogs from this weekend yet- but wanted to stop in and say hi.

Vig,Thanks for the vid. I love her voice. I will have to check on her other songs.I am glad I was not the only one who couldn't hear all the words, my hearing is not the best. Thanks so much for her bio and the words to the song.

EBJ,You have had a busy day! I got a kick out of your finding Nancy in the pant leg. She sure is adventurous!

Tinka, so glad you are feeling better! I have a pretty visual of you sitting on your porch today.:)

i worked outside trimming bushes and watering my plants. It was a beautiful day. Mr Mary lit the sauna. I sweated my hiney off in there! (wishful thinking lol).

MO,I am having the same problem with my garage t.v. One station, but beautiful picture! I think we will be getting a small room antenna. I do my exercises in there and Mr Mary watches some sports stuff when they are on local stations only. We have to pay extra on satellite for local channels which we don't do!

Tina, area51 I just watched "Gran Torino the other day. It was, like, a very good movie lol!

Mary/MI said...

btw that was supposed to be small "roof" antenna :)

I hope everyone had a good day. What a weekend. a yard sale from H E double hockey sticks! And, for the finale, it rained as we were packing up. My pedometer got water logged and I thought it was broken. My sister and I laughed our asses off and the Goodwill got 3 carloads of CRAP!

All that work and my daughter and I walked away with $62 after splitting it. haha, oh well.

MY BASEMENT LOOKS BETTER!

To top it off, we went to a birthday party last night and Mr. Bebbi tied one on and I had to make him grilled cheese sandwiches at 1:30 a.m. because he didn't feel so good. haha..stay away from Everclear Maraschino Cherries!

From Area 51: Oh gawd Carol, walking at the Y and at the park is really low on the adventure scale..hehe. But thank you, for thinking that. I only got about 8,100 steps today. I don't know the exact amount because my pedometer crapped out for a while. Thank goodness it came back to life. My weekend consisted of KFC Grilled chicken, macaroni salad, chocolate cake..and lots of bad stuff. Nice break though the scale will not be fun to look at tomorrow.

Going to read comments.

Hey!

I forgot to congratulate Scirishy on 1st today!

Nancy hasn't gone after Poe, I hope she learns that she is in big trouble if she does! We have introduced them, Poe never had a problem with Paula and I hope these 2 will get along.

He could seriously hurt or kill her.

I have had to squirt her a couple times with water when she gets in his space. I don't know how else to teach her to stay away. We certainly would never spank her, and I don't like yelling.

Poe has started telling her "NO"! He also yells at her "GET OUT OF THERE". It is pretty funny!

Today I read 3 chapters of The Necklace! What a great book!

Does anyone know who gets it after me??

BBL or tomorrow!

Mary - I was on Holland America. The food was great in the dining room but you could still get hamburgers and tacos pool side on the Lido deck. Yes I think the whole nest of owls should go on a cruise for Day 1000.
