~ D-Day ~

by Tina~in_ut

President Reagan gave this moving speech at the 40th Anniversary of D-Day at Pointe du Hoc. Today marks the 65th Anniversary of that momentous day in history. As his predecessors have so eloquently done before him, President Obama, along with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and Britain's Prince Charles, will have the honor of addressing those servicemen still with us today and/or their families. And what an honor it is.

Sadly, there is much controversy behind the scenes......or splashed across the front page, in some cases. Britain's government only pays to transport the servicemen on major anniversaries up to the 60th anniversary. I don't know if they ever relented on that one. Britain's Prime Minister was not going to attend at all. That is, until President Obama announced that he would be attending......much to the chagrin of the French President, who seemed to want the U.S. President to himself. Finally, as late as this week, no one from the British Royal Family had been invited to attend. Prince Charles decided on Monday that he would be attending after pressure from the White House forced France to issue an invitation. I don't understand why all this political jockeying has to happen when the point is to honor our soldiers.

There have also been many comments made about President Obama speaking today. Quite a few have been negative, as if he has a lot to live up to and will not deliver. "He's young and there is no way he can possibly understand the importance of this day." I would probably have agreed, but after researching and reading many articles myself, I don't know how anyone, young or old, could not appreciate what our servicemen have done for our country and for the world. I look forward to hearing what our President has to say today. I'm sure it will be appropriate and eloquent. And thank you to all those who have served our country and continue to do so.

Hellllloooooooo? Where is everyone this morning?

Great blog Tina! I just finished reading a book about the war time conditions these servicemen experienced. How can anyone not want to honor the sacrifices that were made? All this political jockeying is just shameful.

Good morning feathered friends!

TINA...thanks for the bog today. We must always respect and support our servicemen...past, present and future...regardless of how we may feel about war itself. I am disgusted when I read or hear about veterans that are homeless or ill and there is no support or aid for them. These people put their lives on the line for our freedoms and the least we can do is take care of them when they need it.

SCIRISH...so good to see you here today! How are you doing? How is your mom doing? Have LOTS of fun at the wedding. Let loose!!

HODI...have fun with the GOLDIES! Take pics!

Morning Glories!

Whoot Whoot! Congrats on first Scrishy!

Tina wonderful blog. I actually saw our President in a clip yesterday calling out the Iranian President because he is a holocaust denier. President Obama did not mince words as to what he thought about these people who will ignore history.

My understanding is that he will be there with his elderly Uncle who served in WWII and many people are talking about how this is history making. His Grandfather also served so this ceremony is very important to him. Personally I am glad that he led the way and is showing world leaders that honoring our soldiers is one of the most important things you can do for your country.

I to am looking forward to his speech. Tho I will have to catch it recorded later as I have a busy day ahead.

Morning my little Mo Mo!

Hodi have fun with Goldies rack today!

Dianne and Tina you were cracking me up yesterday with comments about Tina's visit. I hope the granddaughters were impressed with the visit tho I do wonder what Tina taught them when you weren't looking! LOL

Tina...thank you for writing such an important blog! Lest we forget! This particular day has become very political, but in Canada's case, it has been so that soldiers like my uncle who died in WWII are remembered. French president Sarkozy decided that only President Obama and himself should be involved in the D-Day remembrances today. He kind of forgot how important British, Canadian and other countries troops were in this allied forces invasion. Even though I am not particularly fond of our Prime Minister, I am glad he insisted that he be there and he is.

Scrishy: Have fun at the Wedding!

VIG: I'm really delighted to hear that Canada and Britain spoke up about this issue, too! My Dad and virtually everybody else of his generation were in this from September 1939 on through. Their sacrifice and dedication echo down through history.

As does a lonely grave, somewhere in Europe, that holds the remains of my Dad's first cousin, a young man named Leonard McCann, who was shot down over Germany in the dying days of the war. My Dad used to play with Len when Dad would visit his cousins in the summer. What must Len's parents have thought when they got the news that their son wasn't coming home?

And how appalling (not to mention awe-inspiring) is it to consider that thousands of families, across the US, Britain, Canada, Australia, France, and yes, Germany too, had to face that awful news just on D-Day alone?

Vig said...

Hi Whabby.... I wonder that too about my grandparents. My Mom never talked about it but I wonder about my Saskatchewan grandparents and getting that telegram about their nineteen year old son. Most of that family is gone now, but I remember an uncle I never knew....in that lonely grave somewhere in Europe....Lawrence Arkwright Ferguson.

Oh, I forgot to say good morning before to my Owl friends. Happy Saturday to you all! Have a great day!

Good morning!

WOW what a wonderful blog this morning Tina. Thank you for posting such an important tribute.

My grandfather was killed in WWII and lots of my family, including dad and brother, served in the Air Force and Army, respecitively.

I am looking forward to President Obamas speech, I am sure it will be eloquent and powerful.

whabbear said...

Wow! I just watched Reagan's speech, and it was totally awesome! So many thoughts running through my head right now.... that it has been 20 years now since the Berlin Wall fell, an event that Reagan could only "hope to see happen someday". It's been enough time that even for somebody like myself, who spend most of his life in the timeframe of the cold war, that particular topic seems almost irrelevant.. almost beside the point. It will be very interesting to see what Obama has to say today, and compare it to 1984!

And I just loved the line about the profound difference between force being used for conquest and force being used for liberation. Well said, President Reagan!

Finally, VIG, I may go to the Lone Star's Saturday beer bust this afternoon, and if I do, I will raise a silent toast to one Lawrence Arkwright Ferguson. And to your grandparents, too.

East Bay J said...

Scirish, congrats on 1st today!

Tina and Goldie, have a fun time together!

Looking forward to pictures!

Dianne and Tina, sounds like you are having a great time!

MEK, good luck to you and Tug today :)

IBB have a great time at your relay!

Shout out to VIG, Shirley, MO and Lynn D!

Vig said...

Whabby...you are a very kind man! Thank you! I don't drink, but this afternoon I will raise my soy chai to your Dad and his first cousin Leonard McCann.

East Bay J said...

Hey Bear!

I just read your post at the end of Area 51...

I was wondering about David C. Didn't they report that his hands were tied behind his back?

Wouldn't he have had some help?

eeeks, wierd stuff.

whabbear said...

Thanks, Sheila!

Judy, I read that too, so it does seem puzzling how he might have engineered the whole situation. I guess we have to await more details!

whabbear said...

Post Script: My Dad often says, when confronting the discriminatory practices of the US government toward us gays and lesbians, that he fought in WW2 for freedom for all.

He certainly didn't fight for this!

Zona said...

Good Morning!

TINA: Ya know, politicians will always play politics with everything. It's sad that they are doing it with this important day. But in the end, as long as those that served their country are remembered and honored..that's really all that matters.

My uncles all served in WWII. My Uncle Rich was there to liberate the concentration camps. He would never speak of the things he saw.

My neighbor was at Anzio..he has nightmares to this day.

Our soldiers give all they have for their country..and in most cases live with the after effects of war for the rest of their lives. The politicians need to put aside any differences they may have and just honor the soldiers. It's the soldiers that matter.

Wonderful blog today TINA..as always. Thank you.

Maureen said...

Good afternoon to MEK, VIG, WHABBY, EBJ, ZONAAAAA and VIG!

IBB...I hope you have good weather and raise a ton of money. Thanks for your generosity to such a worthwhile cause.

WHABBY...your dad is so wise. Thank him for his contributions to our freedoms. BTW, that comment you made the other night about HORtina eating HORganic was hysterical!!

VIG...thank you also for your family's sacrifice for our freedoms, too. How many more days until your move? Are you excited? Scared? Anxious? I wont be at the laundromat tonight...maybe tomorrow!

EBJ...how is Nancy adjusting?

ZOAN...Can I just say I love your Uncle Rich. Liberating the concentration camps must be so bittersweet...such a magnificent thing to have done, but such horror to have seen to have been part of that.

My cousin's mother just recently passed away and she survived the camps, but her husband and young son did not. After the liberation she relocated to New Jersey. She met her second husband and they had Jay, my cousin's husband. She never spoke of it in my presence.

MEK...did you cover the entire interior of the car in plastic? LOL! (That's what Mr. Birdee does before he takes BIRDEE for a ride!!)

Zona said...

Congrats on FIRST SCIRISH! Nice to see you on top again!

JODI: I know you'll have fun with GOLDIE and her family. Will there be drunk blogging this time? ;)

GOLDIE: Love that you have a revolving door..lol..

MEK: Three. ;)

MO: I agree..there is just no excuse.

BEAR & VIG: I will raise a glass also.

I can't wait to see pics of the DENVER DUO!

Waving HI to LYNND, IBB, EBJ, SHIRLEY and all that stop in later.

We've got lots to do today, so I better 'Move It'. Have a wonderful day everyone!

Zona said...

MO: I asked my Uncle about his experience and he would only shake his head and turn away. After he passed away I asked my Aunt..she said he would never even talk about it with her. She told me whenever she would try to get him to open up about it, his eyes would fill with tears and he would have to go outside to be alone for awhile. I'm so sorry to hear about your cousin's mother and her loss.

Just_Lin said...

Scirish Congrats on #1 today! I hope you have a great time at the wedding!

Tina Thank you for the wonderful blog today. It should be a day of reflection, honor, remembrance. Petty political posturing on this day is shameful. President Reagan was one of our greatest, most eloquent speakers. Thank you so much for the vid today. I look forward to hearing President Obama, too.

Sorry I got here too late to join in!

I wanted to go out to the orchards today to pick cherries.

BUT, MR. EBJ invited some friends over and they are still here. They got here about 10 this morning and they are having a great old time in the garage, building and machining.

Mo, Nancy is having a great time here (I think)! She has been exploring and found Paula's old hiding place, up inside the recliner chair in the bedroom.

She has LOTS of energy and we have to watch her every second.

I caught her this morning climbing Poe's ladder to his cage. I don't know what he would do if she tried to play, but he could seriously hurt Nancy if he bit her.

He never had any issue with Paula.

Today sure is flying by!

Hello All My Friends, Happy Weekend!

SHIRLEY, my dear sweet friend, thank you so much for remembering that today June 6th, is my birthday. I tried to give up birthdays many, many years ago, but they seem to come every year whether I like it or not!

Actually I love my birthday. Not that I celebrate it in any special way. I just like to know that my Mom and Dad had enough love together to produce a little girl 59 years ago, and that, as luck would have it, I would be born on such a prestigous day.

I would like to send a huge THANK YOU to my dear Mother, Mary, for having me. Today is really all about you. All I had to do was slide into this world. You, my Sweet Mom, did all the work! I so wish you were still alive, and here with me, so I could properly thank you. I love you Mom!

Thanks also to MAUREEN, IBB & JUST LIN for the Happy Birthday greetings! Makes an old gal feel good, knowing that even though I don't comment much any more, you still remember us. That means so much! THANK YOU

As Tina so brilliantly wrote, and I agree with every word, today is a day to be remembered. And not just because little Donna Jean Thomas was born 6/6/50.

Actually when I was a little girl, I did think that this day was meant for me, only. It was called D DAY, right? Donna Day. And for many years, until I became old enough to understand the significance of this day, I continued thinking every one was celebrating me!

I have yet to see the video Tina posted, because for some reason I cannot get the videos anymore on my desktop. So, I will get out my laptop and watch it.

We were taught extensively about WWII, in school, and I became a huge History buff. As I grew older, I felt this compulsive need to read everything about the War, and especially about the Germans, and The Holocaust. It intrigued me more than any one can imagine. Whether it be a Novel about Jews being captured, hidden, imprisoned or stowing away on ships, or Non-Fiction memoirs of those living in those horrific times, I read them.

Now, it hurts my heart too much to read any more. I did get "Night" by Elie Wiesel, an Oprah Book Club selection. It is a short book, maybe I will read it tonight. It seems appropriate.

All of the male members of my family on my Father's side were in the War. My Uncle Jim served in the Pacific, on a Navy Warship, where he found his life partner Uncle Bob. Uncle Bill, served in the Air Force, and made it his Life Career, retiring with a high rank (can't remember what, but he has a fabulous pension, is still living, although he is now afflicted with Alzheimers)

My Dad was too young to be drafted, so, he enlisted in the Army in late 44, with a fake Birth Certificate, and actually became a Sentry at the Nuremburg Trials. Although he told me stories of seeing the Nazi's on trial, I wish I had asked more questions, but when I found out about this I was a teenager and it didn't occur how important or interesting those stories would be today.

I praise and honor all Veterans from all the Wars. Without you we wouldn't be able to live in a free, Democratic Society. THANK YOU, WOMEN & MEN serving in the Armed Services.

Well, as usual, and something I am sure you all thought was gone, another really long post from Donna Jean!

I love you all, and whether I post a comment or not, know that I try to read the blog as often as I can, and I enjoy all the comments (up to a point, girls)LOL

I wish each and every one of my sweet and loving Owls & Owlettes(do we still use that word, I think I am really out of it) a wonderful weekend, what's left of it.

Go out and play, with your kids, grandkids, friends, lovers, even nice strangers! Go to a park, have a BBQ, visit a Farmer's Market, do whatever makes you feel happy!

And make sure that you kiss and hug and say I LOVE YOU to your loved ones before you go to sleep tonight.
(and actually, every night, it is important)

Preace, Love, Joy & happiness to each and every one,
Donna Jean, Laurie Elizabeth & Olive Elizabeth

Hi Everyone!

Sylvia's in Harlem was fanowltastic, We all loved it..

I had.. a combo.. Fried chicken, white meat and the BBQ ribs.. with the dinner you get two sides I chose mac and cheese and pickled beets.. all for $20.00 how great was that! and so delish...

And when you sit down they give you hot and moist corn bread.. with butter.. Perfect!

Sylvia was there, sitting in a corner of the rest watching all the ppl go in and out..

It was a very cute place and quite crowded.. I did not notice Chris Rock but my nephew did, and when I turned to look it was surly him.. Everyone left him alone, which was good. He was sitting at the table next to ours with his two daughters. I would have not known it was him if my nephew did not point him out.. He was wearing sweats and a baseball hat.. I'll tell ya he is very skinny... His girls were cute and very well behaved.. And no blackberry or phone in sight, he was very attentive to his girls...

Sadly I did not take any pics, I brought the camera, but then felt silly taking it out.. I am shy sometimes ya know..

It took us 40min to get there and 35 coming back, we only hit traffic as we passed Yankee Stadium, I guess there was a game..

Harlem, is very much cleaned up, I was impressed.. Not that I would walk around there at night alone, but for a good soulfoud dinner, it was perfect.. Lots of street vendors, and ppl just chillin..

Fun nite!

Tina wonderful blog today. D-Day always makes me cry. My grandpa was in that war, but he was in Hawaii.

All the comments today in regards to D-Day were very interesting. They made me cry. This day has been heavy on my mind all day.

I also noticed in the comments today that a lot of owls had a fun day! That is great!

ITEACH - How did the sale go today?

Just_Lin said...

Carol I used to go to a little soul food place and have Smothered Chicken which is basically chicken so tender it melts in your mouth, literally swimming in chicken gravy. Pure heaven! It was served with rice, collard greens, black eyed peas and corn bread. Boy was it delicious!

Tina Love the pics!

iteach I hope you had a good day in spite of the tears.

Thursday night we saw rain in the forecast for today, so we moved the rummage sale up to Friday. Friday was a gorgeous day , so we did really well with our sales. Today was overcast and cool. So the sales were just so-so. However, my goal was to earn enough for our trip and I did!

I'm very frugal with our money right now, so if I want to do something fun I made myself work hard with this sale.

I also really enjoyed spending time with my dad. He helped me out the whole time and we had a lot of fun. Now that was priceless!

ITEACH - I agree....priceless!! I wish my Dad would get out more. Seems he would rather live the life of a hermit at the moment. :(

Good night HOoters!!

Jodi I had to step outside for a little while. I hope you have a good night.

iteach I'm so glad you did well at your rummage sale. How nice that you were able to enjoy some time with your dad, too.
