Name Brands?

Name Brands

by iteach

Right now we are trying to be strict on our budget. We are planning some vacation trips this summer, so we need to watch our money. Therefore, I'm really trying to find ways to save pennies. I think about this often while I'm cruising the aisles at the grocery store.

I keep asking myself do I really need this?

If I decide I need it, then I ask myself will the cheapest version be fine or do I need to spend the extra pennies on the brand name.

When it comes to canned or frozen vegetables I have no problem buying the cheapest brand.

However, when it comes to macaroni and cheese, I have to have Kraft. I have tried the cheapest brands and it is just too disappointing. I have to have my KRAFT Mac & Cheese!!!

How are you at the grocery store?

Can you buy the cheapest brand?

What brand name item at the grocery store will you always spend the extra pennies on?

Hi iteach and night.owls.sb, I am a sucker for brand names. I always think they taste better. I will only buy Hellmanns mayo and Heinz ketchup. Oh yes and only Boars Head cold cuts. I do buy store brand frozen veggies, unless I buy fresh which everyone prefers here in my house. When I am buying food, I never really feel it is a waste of money, but I won't buy organic. I don't think it is worth the price.

Today my son and daughter-in-law are coming over with my wonderful granddaughters. I am making a Perdue oven stuffer, Idaho baking potato, stuffed mushroom and I will buy fresh challah bread for the chicken stuffing. I will use fresh thyme and sage for my chicken and only butter and olive oil for my mushroom stuffing. I will make the prewashed lettuce ~ maybe that is a place I can watch my pennies ~ buy a whole head of lettuce. I have to think about it. I am getting hungry lol

Good morning owls!

ibebold, Congrats on first!!

Iteach-- great blog.... I think you named the ONE that I will not buy cheaper...
But my husband calls me a brand name snob... . but when all that dog food(chaeper brand) became contaminated and killed dogs... my husband was glad I was a brand name snob....
But now that we are pincning pennies... with gas prices what they are ..we need to save anywhere we can... so in the store now .. I have a real hard time... do I just want it or do I really NEED it...

Good morning to all who fly in after me!!!
have a great saturday...
I have a very busy one ready to start!!!

Kraft dinner on the blog!! For some reason, in Canada, Kraft Macaroni and cheese has always been called Kraft Dinner...the cool people have shortened that to KD. The group, The Bare Naked Ladies, even sings about Kraft Dinner! I agree iteach..Kraft Dinner...the only kind to be had!

Great topic, iteach!!

Good Saturday morning IBB, GM and my nice neighbour Tink!

I went to bed exhausted and with a headache and after nine hours of sleep, I woke up headache free and bright eyed and bushy-tailed, so I am heading out for a walk....looking for garage sales! See you all later! Happy Saturday, Owls!

Tinkatia said...

I shop only at Safeway because I love collecting Air Miles. I find the Safeway brand of most items is exactly the same as the Brand name. The only exception is Slim Fast. The Safeway version is not as good as far as my taste goes. I pay the extra $3.00 a can for that willingly. That has been my lunch for the past 10 years so it has to taste good. The only other item is canned mushrooms. I buy them rarely but if I do I only buy the brand that I know is grown in good land. I have heard horror stories about where the cheaper brands are grown. I always stock up on whatever is on sale that week. Sometimes I have a year's supply of some items if it is a really good price.

Good Morning Vig - I am so glad you had a restful sleep in your own sweet bed. There is nothing nicer than getting home from a trip and crawling into your own bed.
I am off at 9:30 with my brother in law. I am buying the latest gadgets for my Mac. I am getting "Leopard", Photoshop 08 and a 350 GB of hard drive to back up everything I have. That should do me for quite a long time.

Good morning, lovely hooters!

Congrats IBB! Is that your first time being first?

I shop only at Trader Joes, so I buy their brand. My huz goes to Winco (it's like the Costco of grocery stores) and he buys stuff I can't get at Costco (diet Pepsi, cat litter, etc).

What's everyone doing this weekend?

Be back later!

Good Morning Feathered Friends!

IBB...Hoot hoot! Congrats on FIRST!!

GRANDMA MOSES...Set another place at the table! Dinner sounds YUMMMO!

TINKA...have fun shopping!

VIG...glad you are feeling better. Have a great walk and I hope you find some good garage sales.

ITEACH...kewl topic! I have completely given up on most name brands. I have completly changed my shopping habits since I lost my job. The only "name brand" I have to buy is tuna. Other then that, I buy whatever is cheapest. I even buy my meats when they are marked down as the best if used by date is fast approching. I either throw it in the freezer or cook it that night. I have actually eaten more red meat since I got poor!!! Oh, and I have to buy LActaid milk...It is 3.70 a HALF GALLON. That totally sucks! I buy ketchup for .66 and it is fine. And a block of cheddar cheese for 1.89 instead of 3.50 and it is passable! And I buy coffee at the dollar store. I used to be picky-picky about toilet paper...had to be Charmin, but now I am fine with whatever is the very cheapest.

Crap, I have to go shopping again!

Hope everyone has a great day to day.

Maureen said...

Hi EBJ!! I love, love, love Trader Joe's. I find around here, most things there are better priced then the grocery store. We only have 2 grocery stores...1 big chain and one small local chain. So the prices are outta control due to lack of competition. The other big chain left the market area. Since they left, even the deep discount store we could buy a lot of the groceries at raised their prices.

Maureen said...

EBJ...I forgot to answer your question about the weekend.

Later today, I have an interview for a part-time job and then cleaning and working on some cards I am wayyyy behind on.
Tomorrow, I am taking my 8 year old cousin window shopping and to lunch (she wants either Subway or Burger King!) and then to dinner at my other cousins. (CAROL, she bought some pork chops for dinner!!) ;)

Then I need to do laundry! What a fun weekend! What are YOU doing?

iteach said...

I am on my way to the mall for a little shopping then to the John Deere Museum which is about 1/2 hour away from my home.

My step-daughter is doing a report on famous Illinois people for her third grade class.

Finally, tonight out to celebrate my husband's 39th birthday with his brothers.

Lynn D said...

Morning Glories!

IBB got first!! Wahoo congrats to you!

Well lets see most of the time I don't have a problem with store brands.

The few exceptions are Toilet Paper, Mayo (tho sometimes I do buy it if the other price is way to high) Bread and I usually by my lunch meat at the deli counter. It just seems to taste better that way.

Iteach I actually prefer the store brand Mac and cheese over Kraft! Shocking I know! LOL

The Items that I buy that are not store brands I only buy when they are on sale! Well except the TP I will bite the bullet on that and pay full price.

Going to read about our gourmet tastes here in the nest!

Waving at Grandma moses, EBJ, Iteach, Tinka and anyone else I missed!

For those of you who asked Mr. Lynn D and I went to see Leatherheads yesterday with George (sigh) Clooney and Renee Zellweger! We both enjoyed it! What struck me was that it was a movie that was enjoyable without being overtly crude! Kind of reminded me of the old Hollywood days! LOL

George is so good in this type of movie. One of my favorites of his is O' Brother where art thou? Leatherheads is set in 1925 just as football is being recognized as becoming a professional sport. Quite fun. That man just gets better and better looking as he gets older! IMHO

We went shopping after the movie and finally bought the treadmill that we have been saying we were going to do since xmas. So I will be getting the room cleaned out where we are going to put it!

So the rest of my weekend is cleaning. See how excited I am? NOT! LOL

Great blog Iteach!

Congrats on 1st Ibb!

Certain things I buy have to be brand names, but being unemployed for 14 months I can't afford to be too fussy. I try to spend only $50.00-$60.00 a month so brand names aren't always in my budget.

Kraft dinner, Heinz ketchup, Saran Wrap, Sunlight dish detergent and kraft miricle whip are all brands I buy. Some of those items last me a long time though so the little extra I pay I don't mind. Laundry detergent and TP I have 2 or 3 brands I will buy depending on the cheapest price at the time.

We only have a Sobeys store here in town so there is no price wars here. You pay what you pay.

Oh, I only like Colgate toothpaste, but I bought a bunch when I saw it on sale for $.49.

Good Morning, everyone..
Good Afternoon to the East Coast..

IBB - congrats on FIRST!!

Iteach - great blog - When I was working and we had two incomes coming in - I bought what I liked and didn't think twice about it.
Now, I tend to shop with the sales flyer - every Wednesday, I look to see what is on sale and that's what we get.. cashiers will usually compliment me on how MUCH I saved -

I do the same thing that Mo does, in the meat dept - they mark down the "soon to expire" meats to great prices - there isn't anything wrong with them - they just need to move 'em out! And, I always buy the other meats that are on sale - I never pay full price.

I have recently started buying some store brands, but I am a (how did IBB put it) brand name hog. So, I am very picky..

It's a beautiful day in the desert - I'm going to enjoy it - we have an appt to do our taxes this afternoon (we ALWAYS procrastinate on this) -

I hope everyone has an excellent day!! :-)

Hey, there Owls! Having a good weekend? Not much happening here today, except Hillary's in town.

My cats are the real brand snobs of the house! They will only eat Original Meow Mix and Frisky's Poultry Platter. On the rare occasion that they use their indoor bathroom, it better be Fresh Step Premium or, literally, "No Go!"

Throughout my Seattle banking career, I was definitely a clothing/leather goods name-brand-only gal. I found that you usually do get the quality you pay for. However, I despise blatant 'Logo' items. Why should I pay a fortune to be a 'sandwich board' ad for Louis Vuitton? Shouldn't they pay me for the free advertising?

Next post, I'll admit to my 'gross-ry' brand name must buys. However, here's my exception to 'more $=best quality'. I used to only buy bread at Great Harvest Bakery. It's a wonderful place that puts out huge slices of various breads and butter by the pound to sample, but loaves run $4. -$6. Then I discovered Safeway's '5-Seed Bread' which averages $1.89, and is often on special for under $1.00--------and it is perfect for toast and sammies (whether meaty or PB&J), and warmed for dinner bread. Yummy!

Next post, I'll admit to my 'gross-ry' brand name must buys. Good topic, iTeach. Happy Birthday, Mr. M!! Congrats on #1 & #2, IBB. Happy 50th B'day (yesterday) to the Peace Symbol.

Dreama, God bless your parents and the surprise you have in store.

A few of my "Accept No Substitutes!" are~~
*Bumble Bee (or Costco Albacore) tuna
*Albertson's Cajun deli roast beef
*Best Foods (Hellmann's) mayo
*Jimmy Dean Sage sausage
*Jif Creamy peanut butter
*Snoqualmie Falls oatmeal
*Fat Tire beer
*Fidalgo Bay Coffee (from Washington, but available online everywhere)
*Purex Mountain Breeze laundry soap
*Cascade dishwasher pouches
*Mr. Clean Summer Citrus

Other than these must-haves, I tend to buy a lot of Fred Meyer (Kroger) house brands, but am trying to 'go green' by buying more local produce and support local businesses, i.e. Jerry's over Home Depot, etc.

Which reminds me, Saturday Market season starts today. Time to go shopping!

Good afternoon Owls!!!

Well, I went out for a lovely walk looking at the incredible spring flowers and looking for garage sales. None to be found...I guess the threat of April showers has held them off for a while. I did head to the market and was thinking as I shopped that because I eat mainly veggies, fruit, beans, grains and tofu I don't use a lot of brand names, but then I walked past the frozen food section and started salivating! My favourite fall off the healthy wagon, brand name treat jumped out at me..my two favourite men...Ben And Jerry! I would walk across hot coals for Cherry Garcia!!!!! Delish, Trish!

DonnaJean said...

Good Morning/Afternoon Everyone!

Great Blog, iteach!

I used to be a "Brand Name Snob"! Now, being on a set income I have been known to buy the lowly "store brands"

But, I agree, there are a few things I will NOT STOOP SO LOW to buy.

Toilet paper is one, I tried the Target brand once, NO, NO, NO, never again!(but the Target Paper Towels are as good as Brawny) Only Quilted Northern for me! and also Kleenex Brand Tissue! Stove Top Stuffing is another one, Dawn Dish Detergent, and Cascade for the diswasher. Tropicana NO PULP w/Calcium OJ, Our local Sonoma/Napa County Dairy, Clover Brand, for milk are a few others I can think of right now.

But, like EBJ, I do alot of shopping at Trader Joes, and I like alot of their brands better! Their Non Fat Cottage cheese is excellent! and their Light String Cheese, very good! And their canned Marinara Sauce for only $1.49, can't beat it!!! And brand new there, EBJ, is Organic No Salt Tortilla chips!!! Yay!!! Laurie was so happy! And they are delicious, with a low sodium slasa, yum!

And now that I am more "label" conscience, due to Laurie's low-sodium diet, I find alot of the Trader Joe's things to be much better than brand names. You cannot imagine how much added salt they put in the foods. Its terrible!

And I want to thank so many of you for supporting me when I was "called out" on the other Blog. When that SnapCracklePop person said I was threatening, between my tears I almost laughed. Me, threatening???

Ross removed the offensive comment, but then made a remark personally to me that I was making "demands". That too was so not true.

Oh well, these things happen.

At least I have all of you lovely feathered friends to fall back on!

Have a lovely Saturday everyone!

Peace and Love, DonnaJean and Laurie Elizabeth

DonnaJean I am appalled at the treatment you received at the other blog. (((HUGS)))
Maureen Whoo Hoo!!
iteach What a great idea for the blog today.

I admit to being a snob about some things I buy. I also find it interesting that other owls seem to have alot of the same preferences.

I only buy:
Quilted Northern TP
Best Foods (Hellman's) Mayo
Cascade dishwasher soap
Dawn dishwashing liquid
Kleenex tissue
Bounty Paper towels (select-a-size) works great for me because you can get 1/2 a sheet if that's all you need.
Bumble Bee Albacore tuna

I'm sure there's others that I will think of later. I'm not very good at bargain hunting but I will stock up on my favs when they go on sale.

DonnaJean, you are the sweetest woman! I was also shocked at what "he" said. Others before you also said "clean up" that comment. Why he singled you out is beyond me. I don't blame you at all for leaving his blog. In this case he was the one creating the drama.

Oh, and the date I started Blogging over there was the middle of June, I think the 17th, but I would have to go back and check his archives, and I just don't want to!!!

Thanks ~~grandma moses~~ for the kind words. Who knows what goes through some people's minds at times. I am over it. And I won't bring it up here anymore either I promise!!! Have a wonderful day with your family and have lots of fun with those precious granddaughters. Dinner sounds delicious!!!

Good Afternoon Owls!

It's been a long week so it sure feels good to be back in the nest! My mom is still in town though, and I've been helping her reorganize my grandpa's house so I'll be flying in and out quickly while she's here.

I love Sam's Club and buy a lot of their Member's Mark products like paper towels, laundry detergent, OTC medications, etc. I'm not a big fan of generic brands when it comes to food though, and I'm even more picky about pet foods.

One of the ways I explain it to my clients is by saying, "If it's a brand that can be bought at a grocery store, I don't recommend feeding it to your pets." High quality pet foods are not sold in regular grocery stores so it's an easy way for them to remember which brands not to buy.

Iteach: Thanks for writing the blog!

Owls: Waving Hi to all of you! Hope you have a relaxing weekend.

Hi Everyone! Hope that your Saturday has been happy and full of sunshine!

ITEACH: Loved reading your blog! We usually purchase name brand items because the prices are really not that different on most of the things we buy. I like Kraft Ranch Dressing, but have tried the store brand and it just isn't the same. We also only buy Kraft Mac and Cheese..the sharp cheddar flavor. One thing we will buy in the store brand is soup. I prefer Progresso, but ya know..soup is soup.

I wonder sometimes if I just THINK the name brand tastes better because I know it is the name brand? If I was in a blind folded taste test, could I really tell the difference?

Oh, and with soda..it HAS to be Coke or Pepsi..no store brands there. Ick!

Now to read the posts!

Hey Feathered Friends!

BON'O...thanks for asking! I will be working at a local coffee house/cafe/restaurant. I will be working on the coffee side. I know nuttin' about it...a lot of homework ahead! I do know that I love their coffee! When I was melting down (as opposed to melting away!! darn it!) I spent a lot of time there. I found it funny that too much coffee can cause jitters and anxiety, yet when I was there, surrounded by coffee I felt a strange comfort. It felt like a home away from home! I spent many hours there and I loved each one!I told the owner that and he said that I was weird! But I guess in that place weird is good! He also warned me about the kitchen and the kitchen staff...they are NOT politically correct! If I get offended easily, stay out of the kitchen!

It was funny, I was so glad he is giving me a chance, I forgot to even ask him how much I will be paid! But, I guess that means to me it is priceless! As long as I can make enough each month to cover my COBRA insurance, I will be happy!

Now, if only I can catch up here and at home! OY!

I was always taught by my Mom to be a thrifty/bargain shopper!

I used coupons in the past, but not so much these days!

Ironic that you have this blog, because I was talking on the phone yesterday to one of my best girlfriends in SC and she is VERY brand specific! lol
She calls 'off brands'-"bootleg" stuff! LMAO

It always cracks me up, but we were discussing this very subject.

I MUST have French's mustard..That's one item I'm very brand specific about. I found that a lot of the store brand items, taste the same as the real item. A lot of that is trial and error though..I have bought generic cereal that tasted like cardboard! lol

Hope you all have a great evening!
I have to catch up on the last couple days of blogs around here!

Zona, VIG and Amicus - I was just going to write you when I decided I would 'blog' it since you three are here. I have had a change in plans. I went with my BIL and bought "Leopard" and photoshop 08 for my Mac. (I get my hard drive on Wednesday night at the computer meeting.)
Then we went to Zellers for my pills. Then I renewed my lotto 649 subscripton and then bought food for all my pets at the Vet. I got home, took a nap and discovered that was all I was up for today. I just don't have my energy back. My grandchildren are very understanding and we changed our movie plans until tomorrow. I must change my status.
I mentioned this morning that I find Safeway products as good as Brand names, except for Slim Fast. I realized later that I over simplified things. I like Safeway cleaning products and canned fruits and vegetables. There are so many things that I have to buy that are Brand names. Miracle Whip, Kraft dressing, Heinz ketchup, Skippy peanut butter, Island Farms real butter milk and cheese, Tropicana Grovestand orange juice, real and diet Coke, Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Purex T.P.. I buy all my pet food, and treats from the Vet. I wouldn't think of buying them from Safeway. I could go on but I have made my point that I was way 'off base' when I mentioned Slim Fast. I must have been half a sleep when I posted this morning. I am going to have a Diet coke now to try and wake up.

Donna Jean (((((Hugs))))))

Moweenie - Glad you got your job. We were sending you good luck. Please write once in a while.

Birdee - Still waiting to hear if you got the job. We were sending positive vibes your way too.

Jennifer - Hope you are having a great weekend.

I know I have missed 'talking' to many of you. Please forgive me. My only excuse is a
"fuzzy" head.

ZONA...I will make time to read! I can't promise about writing back in a timely fashion! I got a message from Just Lin today and while I was writing back, I fell asleep! I finally hit send 2 hours later!

I don't buy guacamole, I much prefer to make it. But I tasted the Trader Joe's and it was pretty darn good. I think it is in the freezer section, in a tub...but not sure of that. Do you know it costs 2.50 for an avocado here? WTF! When I made it, I usually made 6 avocados...$15 bucks just for the avocados...and then the tomatoes and garlic and onion and lemon...too expensive to take for parties now. I love them, and adore having slices on sammies and in salads...maybe that will be my first splurge when I get my paycheck! or Charmin!!

Zona - You must be my daughter because I hate to iron too. My sister loved it but hated hand washing sweaters. I
always did her sweaters and she did my ironing gladly. I love washing clothes. If I am not feeling well the clothes basket fills up. Otherwise I am washing clothes every day and I live alone. I love clean bedding and towels. I take everything out of the dryer quickly so that I can smooth out any wrinkles in sheets etc. If I am going out I sometimes have to iron but it is my least favourite job to do in the house.

I just read the comments and took notes. Now I can't read my writing. Arthritis sucks.

grandma moses - I just read what you are having for dinner. Do you have an extra chair for a starving Canadian? It surely sounds fantastic.

VIG - My grandkids love Kraft Dinner. I have never liked it even as child. I like Macaroni and Cheese but with real cheese and tomatoes. It's real comfort food for me.

Lynn - I want to see "Leatherback". I loved George in "Oh Brother where art thou?"

Iteach - Happy birthday to Mr. Iteach. I am still getting books together to send to your school.

Shirley - Love to see that sun.

Mek - I try to get sale prices too. Our gas is now $1.25 a litre which is $6.00 a gallon. I don't know how people who travel by car a lot manage financially.

Bon O - All my pets are fussy eaters. They 'like what they like' and don't change it. People tell me they will eat if they get hungry enough but my Teddy will just sit by his dish and 'meow'. Maybe I give in too fast.

VIG - I thought you would find lots of neat things at the garage sales today. We must go together. I love them too.

Mary - My thoughts and prayers are with you and your brother. I will light a candle tomorrow.

Zona - I feel if I stock up on lots of food and pet food then I am ready for any disaster. We are supposed to be able to look after ourselves for 3 days, in case of earthquake etc.
I love folding and putting away the clean clothes. Just don't ask me to iron them first.

Amicus - So happy to see you posting. I will e-mail you.

Joey - I used to use coupons a lot too. Now our stores have special cards. If you use their card you get the special price. It's a lot easier.

BonO- I will save your picture comment for tomorrow.

I think I have written my share today. As Forrest Gump says

Hi owlings! My feathers are drooping!

The good news is I have one clean room in my house! LOL By clean I mean I filled the trunk of the car with stuff for the charity thrift store, then I mopped, washed windows, decobwebbed everything wiped down the furniture etc.. got the treadmill in and now I am too damn tired to use it!

I am cracking up at what we owls will not compromise on!

TP in our house has to be Scott's Mr. Lynn D throws a fit if I get anything else and it is septic safe!

I forgot peanut butter Jif everytime. Other brands taste like they threw some of the dirt that they grew those peanuts into the vat.

I am not a big Ice cream person but when I crave it my favorite is Godiva!! Chocolate raspberry or Hazelnut! Hard to find so I will pay more for it when I do.

Mo: I am happy that you got the second job, but very sad that they will talk to you more than we do! :) :(

DonnaJean: So the other blog was being unruly again huh? I am so sorry to hear that! How anyone could find anything you post offensive in anyway is beyond me! I don't go their at all anymore so I am not sure what happened! What a bunch of Maroons!

Bono: Will you make me some soup any kind I don't care they all sound delish! Purex laundry soap is my brand too! One of the few that I don't break out in horrible rashes when I use it.

Zona: I used to iron all the freaking time! I would have baskets of all these wrinkly pruned clothes. Then one year I snapped! I told Mr. Lynn D if he wanted clothes Ironed he better figure it out because I refuse! When I have occasion to drag the damn board out it is always covered in dust! So if any of you ever meet me and my clothes look ironed you are special indeed! I don't iron just for anyone!

Mary: I have been thinking about you and Joe everyday. I am so happy to see you checking in! (((Hugs)))

Ok off to hit the shower. I need to remove some of this dust I am carrying around!

Hi everyone!

~~Miss Zona~~ How in the world can you STILL have $25.00 on your Trader Joe's card??? Seriously, you are missing out on so many good things there!

1. Frozen Food Section:
The Orange Mandarin Chicken, delicious & easy.
Also frozen ready to heat & eat brown rice or jasmine rice.

2. Fresh Produce:
The best fresh bagged lettuces, bagged vegetables, whether it be green beans, carrots, broccoli & cauliflower, or butternut squash or sweet potatoes, also delicious. And they ALWAYS have tomatoes (I like the little ones from Mexico)

3. Cheese:
The best already shredded cheeses, both regular and light, (Laurie especially likes the light String cheese) etc. So many varities, you take your pick! Low fat or regular!

Just a hint, be sure to check the expiration date, sometimes, they don't remove the old ones. ALWAYS go for the ones in the back!

And, yes I agree about the frozen guacamole, very good.

But if you want to make your own, here is a very simple and delicious recipe!

Avacados- 2-4 at least (the dark green bumpy Haas ones are the best)
Salsa- (the very best you can find fresh in the deli section of your local grocery store) Trader Joe's is good. (NO BOTTLED SALSA)

Fresh cilantro and garlic.
(chopped onions are optional).

That is it!

Smash up the avacados with a fork in a bowl. (DO NOT USE A FOOD PROCESSOR) some lumps are good! Slowly add the best Salsa you found a teaspoon at a time, until you get the flavor you enjoy. If you like it Hot and Spicy buy the Hot Salsa. I prefer it more on the mild side. Add the cilantro and garlic to taste. I like alot of cilantro and garlic!

NEVER ADD SOUR CREAM TO QUACAMOLE, THAT IS A SIN! (you can have sour cream on the side, though, if you wish)

Always add extra cilantro and garlic if you like.

I found out you don't have to chop all the ingredients, just get a Pyrex measuring cup, at least a 2cup size, push the cilantro into it, and using your Kitchen Shears, just cut away! So easy!!! (works great with basil too) Every one needs Kitchen Shears! I use mine for so many things, cutting up a chicken, etc.

And I am sure you all have a Garlic Press, right?

If you don't, you need to get one right now!!! Pampered Chef has a great one. Just make sure it has a press with no seams.

OK, cooking lesson on guacamole is done.

I know there are those out there that must use their own fresh tomatoes and peppers etc. and a bowl and pestle. I applaud you. But, I found this recipe easy, fast and delicious!

OK, now that I have my No Salt Tortilla Chips, salsa from TJ's, and some light Mexican cheese from TJ's also, I think I'll go make some guacamole! I was going to save my avacados for a salad, but this sounds so much better!!!!

Happy eating everyone!!!

Peace, Love, and Good Food to all, DonnaJean and Laurie Elizabeth

Hey HOoters!!! Busy day - work, shopping with my daughter, then a haircut for me.

Iteach great blog!!! And I totally agree - the blue box Kraft Macaroni & Cheese - is the only one my family likes!!! We've tried the Deluxe version - but nothing compares to the original!!! I do try to save in other areas - such as the store brand (sur-fresh) ketchup - it tastes as good as Heinz to me. I do like Charmin tp - but have found that their Charmin Basic - is great - but not as expensive as the original. I also have found that I can get great bargains at Walgreens. Some of my favorites are the Sun dishwasher soap, and White Rain shampoo and conditioner. All of which are only $1.00 each!!! Love that.

I hope everyone has a great Saturday night. I just wanted to pop in quick and give my 2 cents worth.....LOL!!

Jodi said...

ZONA - We love horseradish mustard - especially on a ham & swiss sandwich!!!

Ok.....totally forgot, but MR. JODI MUST have his Skippy peanut butter. I made the mistake of buying Fisher peanut butter - I personally like it better (it's smoother, creamier, and about $3.00 cheaper for the large jar) - but MR. JODI wasn't having any of that. So now we buy both - one for the hubby and one for me and the kids.

Bon'O said...

Jodi~~Nice haircut!

DJ~~Love me some TJ's salad dressings! Have to pass on their diced butternut squash, though. I prefer to buy whole squash, peel and cut it up...8 minutes in the microwave and it's to die for, even without any butter or honey...just a little sprinkle of fresh nutmeg and I'm in Heaven.

Also love my KitchenAid garlic press (with its own little cleaning brush). And, could there ever be too much cilantro? That has to be the freshest fragrance on the planet...well that and lemon grass.

All this food talk...let's blame it on Grams & Amicus!

K'girl??? Jennifer??? FOADed Whab??? Where'd ya go? Are you having a fun-filled weekend without us?

Just_Lin said...

I used to buy Skippy peanut butter until I heard some of you saying you like Jif better. So I tried it a while back and I agree, I like it better, too. It's also easier to spread on bread. I'm eating a spoonful of it right now. :) I have to leave for a while. See you later.

Zona: I forgot to answer you. My ankle so far today is better! Only a couple of twinges. It is the damndest thing this started a couple of months ago and the doctor has no idea what is causing it. I am starting to think it is related to my sciatic nerve and when I over strain my lower back or my right hip I then get these god awful spasms in my ankle. It feels like someone is grabbing the nerve and squeezing as hard as they can and then it releases.

Any way all the lifting I did last week, I think aggravated it!

Vig: I want to hit the garage sales too!! Wahoo I have noticed in our local paper that some have started up here. Just a few but that is a sure sign of summer on the way!

Ok going to go watch some TV and read a little.

Hi everyone!

I sure need to start proof reading before I post, my first post this morning should have read that my huz buys stuff at Winco that I can't get at Trader Joes! duh.

Anyway, we had a busy day. We had to take our parrot to the vet this afternoon, so got home from there a while ago.

We are having a Trader Joes dinner! Salad, tomatoes, broccoli slaw, rice and spicy tuna. Yum!

There are a few things that I must have, like Quilted Northern tp. I order a case at a time from Costco, they have a great price, plus free shipping.

Costco has great prices, plus free shipping on much of their stuff. We seldom have time to go there to shop, so I shop on their web site quite a bit.

I really prefer Tide laundry soap, but will use Gain once in a while (that smells sooo good!).

Trader Joes has fabulous stuff, their prices are very reasonable at the store I shop at.

One of our faves is the tomato basil marinara sauce, it's $1.69 (just went up from $1.49) for a big jar. I put olives and mushrooms in it and some garlic, it is soooo good.

OK now it's after 7pm, I started writing this before 5!

I'm working extra tomorrow, ugh. But I'm on double time for weekends now, so have to get it while I can!

Will try to stop in later!

I'm not a vegetarian, but I would buy some things at Trader Joe's that the vegetarians here may like.

The Meatless Meatballs. AWESOME. Sometimes I would buy the black bead dip in the salsa aisle, and heat it up with some of their marinara sauce and add in the meatless meatballs and have it over whole wheat pasta. YUMMMO! And they are really low in W.W points! I think they are Vegan, too.

I also loved the Doc. Prager's veggie burgers. I buy the California style. Chunks of veggies in them...not all filler stuff! They are lower in points then other veggie burgers!

Some of their blends of frozen veggies are delish and different. I also buy frozen bags of their rice dishes. Soooo good.

I used to buy the soy peanut butter there, too. Really good. And little soy crackers...I think about 29 was a serving and only 2 points!

They sell packs of sliced Lite Jarlsberg cheese. In the grocery it is like 5.99 and there it is 2.99.

And chocolate merangues...a big tub for less then the price of the smaller ones in the grocery store. Soooo good!

The prices are really reasonable and the quality is the best.

And the environment is fun and the staff very helpful and nice.

If you have a chance to visit one, I highly recommend it!

~~Lynn D~~

You MUST listen to this.

The symptoms you describe with the spasms are exactly what I felt, and unfortunatley still do at times.

I had spinal fusion surgery two years ago May 1st.

It all started at least 4 years before that with my leg and ankles giving mre "trouble". I ignored it, thinking it was "nothing" some various lowerback pains, and sometimes I could not move at all for several minutes/hours.

I put off going to a "physical medicine" doctor. My PCP Dr at Kaiser finally got me to one.

After several MRI's, they found out I had a condtion called get this "spondylothisesis".

Very long word.

Basically, I had a slippage of the discs in my lower lumbar # 4 & 5. And the sciatic nerve damage was very intense.

The surgery corrected the disc problem, opened up the sciatic nerve damge and made me be able to stand and walk for more than 15 minutes at a time.

You can imagine how difficult it was to live a normal life before that. I was working part time doing admin work at a real estate office at the time, (doing everything from lifting reams of paper, and heavy files) during the hours Laurie was at her Day Program.

With several cortisone injections, and pain pills, I was able to function.

But this is what the Dr said to me. "your condition is not life threatening, but what about your quality of life? Do you want to go on like this, or do you at such a young age (55) want to continue in pain until you cannot walk at all"?

For me, it was the best thing I ever did. I can now walk without having to sit down every 10-15minutes, but I still have some issues with other discs in the back, and I will deal with them later.

What I am suggesting to you, dear Lynn, is to make sure your Dr gives you a series of MRI's to see exactly what is causing the sciatic nerve damage.

Sometimes just physical therapy works, or spinal cortisone injection.

It is all YOUR call.

But, I realy want you to look further into this. I waited about 4years too long to go to the Dr to figure out what was the cause.

I had fallen a couple of times on my tailbone and lower back. And didn't think a thing about it, except for the pain. I didn't pursue it with a Dr specialized in the field.

An MRI is simple. It will give you results, and then you can go from there to decide what you want to do further.

I didn't want to live anymore on spinal injections, and pain pills.
But, that is my opinion.

A couple of hints that helped me. I always slept with a pillow under my knees, and one or two pillows under my feet. This helped.

I have now found an oblong round pillow fairly firm that I use under my knees. It helps tremendously! And I found sleeping on my back was best for me. But each person has to find out what is best for them.

I hope so much that you find some comfort and that you feel better soon. I hope I didn't sound preachy about the surgery. That is such a private issue and decision to make. It just worked for me.

Healing thoughts, prayers, and positive thoughts to you my dear friend. If you wnat to talk further, contact me on email, I would be happy to tell you more!

Sleep well Lynn, and all my other lovely Owlettes, and a couple Owls who sneak in here from time to time!!!

Peace and Love, DonnaJean

Lynn - Listen to Donna Jean. Better to rule out everything.

coming out of lurkdom to echo what donnajean said..
Lynn, definitely don't let the pain you are having go to long. and MRI is the fastest and best way to see what is going on.
the longer you wait, the more potential damage you could do.. and you don't want that.
Donnajean, I didn't realize we were sisters in spinal fusion (sounds like a band name!)
Your story is very much like mine.. while it will never be 100% better.. the back surgery is the best thing I ever did..
happy weekend night owls..

oh and as far as the brand names are concerned.. there are a few things I wouldn't buy generic.. but there is definitely one thing!

back into the shadows now.....

Maureen said...

LYNN...I think I have told you this before, but when my discs exploded, the pain was concentrated in my ankle. I thought I had a broken ankle and the pain was horrendous. It radiated down my left butt cheek, down my leg and settled in my ankle. I couldn't sit or sleep. Laying down was excruciating. I had 2 discs that herniated and the matter was resting on that nerve ending in my spine. I had xrays and then an MRI when it was finally diagnosed. I opted not to have the surgery. I also have stenosis and arthritis in my spine. I had a series of 3 shots and thank heavens, I am mostly pain free now. When I get overly stressed, it flares up, but usually 2 advil take care of it. I also took topomax for 2 years as they found it works well on nerve pain. I have been off of that since November.
Please check everything out and get some relief...SOON! I don't like when my friends are suffering.

Tinkatia said...

Boy I guess we all have our aches and pains. My turn to tell. I have arthritis in my back. I have to rest every afternoon with ice packs on my back. It sounds like I am babying myself but if I don't do it I suffer the next day. They told me at the arthritis clinic that with Arthritis one should rest one's back for 10 minutes every couple of hours. There would be no way I could still be working. I also have it in my hands. They aren't the pretty hands they once were that's for sure. They are old ladies' hands. I take Ty 3's when the pain is bad. I also have osteo so I take Fozimax and that has strengthened my bones 5% per bone scan for the last 3 scans. I have bone scans every 2 years. Next?

I haven't been able to read the comments but I wanted to post so you all won't forget me.

I'll try to get Sharon to bring me back here sometime before Friday when we have to leave for home. If we don't get back, I'll post again on Saturday. Have a great week everyone. I miss you all.

I'm calling it a night. I went bowling with a bunch of people at work and I'm exhausted. I haven't bowled in about 20 yrs plus I'm about 20 yrs older than the next oldest. It was lots of fun though. Sweet dreams everyone.
