Today owls we are going to review the topic of Taking Care of our Earth. Yes, owls, we have discussed this before in class, but it is very worthy of another lesson. Before we learn new ideas of being "green" let's activate our prior knowledge and review amongst ourselves what we have learned from our fellow owl friends about how to take care of the Earth. If you are having a hard time remembering our prior discussions, I'm sure Shirley, our history & stat. teacher will guide us to correct blogs.
Here our some guidelines while you are reviewing with your partners.
1. No talking about porn unless you can some how relate it to taking care of the Earth.
2. Remember to be good listeners and to give kudos to your friends for participating.
3. Watch your language, because Principal Tinka will be watching.
Today's discussions will help you for your next assignment. Yes, that is right you will have an assignment. School is not over for another seven weeks. I would like you to do some research and teach your fellow owls something new about being friendly to the Earth. It can be a tiny useful tidbit of information or a lengthy essay. You will post this assignment on the blog Wed., April 22nd, since that is Earth Day. We will have a fun Earth Day celebration.
Okay, I have talked enough. It is now time for you to share what you already know about today's topic with other owls.

Bonacci: I have actually heard something about this Cow Farting problem. Sounds like a real issue to me!
Iteach: I used to recycle a lot when I lived in another state but moving to Kentucky recycling has not been as focused on. I think that the area is coming around. I am thinking of starting to squish my cans again. We go through a lot of soda cans. Also, have considered giving up the bottled water I am so addicted to. It would save me money for sure.

ITEACH: We've bought those reusable shopping bags, and we keep them in the trunk all the time. This way we don't have to keep getting the plastic ones each time we shop. We are forever forgetting to bring them into the store with us though. Since I'm the one that usually goes out to get them, I'm getting much better at remembering not to forget. ;)

Zona- We do the same thing. I got all kinds of reusable bags, always left them in the car. I have gotten way better now at remembering to bring them in. I always remembered at the grocery store- it was the Mall or Walgreens, etc. that I would forget them.
I also buy recycled paper products when I can for the office.

Real quick I had another shower moment! I do my best thinking there.
I thought running around nekkid is earth friendly as you are using less water to wash clothes. Then it popped into my head you would be taking more showers or baths because of the lack of clothing so that does not work.
Then the light bulb came on! Just use the water from the water barrel and problem solved.
Nekkidness for saving the earth! Buck nekkid and going green! Nudity for water conservation!

iteach, I have the Maytag high efficiency washer & dryer, I recycle paper,glass,cans & plastic. I use earth friendly floor,bath & dusting
products. I unplug & turn off stuff when not in use. I use earth friendly bags for grocery shopping.
I wish there were more recycling centers, and more community involvement.This area is not encouraged to recycle. I do a lot of nagging about it in hopes that more will recycle.
I would like to recycle Mr Mary in hopes he will come out tobacco free & sweet smelling lol!

I have a good one! I buy pizza (sometimes) from a local Pizza Place (Glass Nickel) that uses recycled cooking oil in their delivery cars!! Now that is going above and beyond.
I also save twist ties. I have a huge bag of them, which I re-use. Mr. Goldie thinks I'm a bit off kilter, but hey they come in handy for a lot of things.
Oh my gosh....oh my gosh....oh my gosh...how could i forget! I save every stinking scrap of paper that i use for scrapbooking....cuz you never know when you will need that certain shade of blue!!!! :D

Iteach, I'll have to think about something new to be earth friendly and save energy. It's not easy being green!
I already use the squirrely light bulbs and I turn off lights, have new energy efficient washer and dryer, use the cloth bags for grossry and other stores, recycle all my junk mail and other paper & cardboard, and I save twist ties, too. Oh, and I also save every scrap of scrapbook paper and ribbon.
I also have a Hybred car. Bear, how do you like your new car?

Iteach I never said I would get nekkid! Just that I would start the movement. We have Carol and Birdee for the nekkid moments. LMAO
ITEACH..the hospital system I work for does direct deposit for almost all the employees and last month they decided that they will no longer mail the pay advice to our homes. It saved a massive amount of paper and $125,000 annually. In our division we are trying to go paperless. We haven't gotten there yet, but we are working on it.
I am not so good at home ;( I leave lights on, the tv and often the computer. I also forget my canvas bags all the time. I do re-use my plastic gross-ery bags. I take them to work to give the nurses their supplies in. I have a lot of work to do to help the planet.
I say we all stop using toilet paper and just use our hands~ :D

Finally getting to blog!
Iteach we recycle lots... our garbage company charges us for 3 cans. One is for regular garbage, the green one is for yard waste, and the blue one is for everything else, i.e. plastic, glass, newspaper, etc.
We have several local places to bring cardboard, cans, you name it.
MR. EBJ is trying to "compost", he takes leftover food and buries it out in his garden.
I'm not sure if he's doing it right, he calls it "feeding the worms".
We have replaced most of our light bulbs with the (I can't think of what they're called). But the squiggly ones that are energy efficient.
We also try to group our errands, for example on Tuesday I had banking, pet store, and a couple other places to go. I made 1 trip instead of several just to save some gas.
I shop at Trader Joes, and usually I bring the same paper bags so I don't have to get new ones each time.
If you bring your own bags, you can enter in a drawing for free grossries. I haven't won yet, but it is saving trees.
I do plan to get the cloth bags one of these days.

Iteach~ On the plane tonight, there was a segment on being Green! They showed two families who built "green" houses. It was very interesting.....but let me just tell you! At the office we have very little "regular" garbage. We rinse and recycle juice cartons and coffee cups and shred all paper. Any organic garbage is taken home and put in our organic buckets. I do the same thing at home. I use cloth bags for goceries and the energy saving light bulbs. Nova Scotia has one of the best recycling programs in Canada. They will soon be charging people .05 for plastic bags at the store. A lot of places you go have idle free zones and you have to turn your engine off. You can be fined if your garbage is not sorted properly. When you buy electronics now there is a fee added on to help the cost of recycling electronics. I can't remember the name of it. Most restaraunts have the different recycling bin for garbage.
