What the Earth means to me!

by Iteach

Right now my head is swimming with information on how to make the Earth a better place. There is so much to share that I don't know where to start. I have hit the backspace key so many times because I can't decide where to begin. However, when it comes right down to it all that is easy to explain is how the Earth is so important to me.

Let's begin with the colors of the Earth. Each time I see the colors of the fall leaves or the rich deep soil from the fields they make me smile in amazement. I can't help but giggle each time I discover a rainbow after a storm. It is amazingly beautiful and so are the rich wildflowers. I'm very grateful to see that beauty during my walks.

Then there is the smell of the Earth after rain. Certain earthly smells relax my shoulders and make me feel right at home. I love to start my nature walks with a great big deep breath. I always find that each season has its own unique smell to me, it is better then a candle.

Whenever, I take my walks I never have any of those little listening devices in my ears. All I want to hear is the wind, water, or birds. The music distracts me from appreciating all what is outside. Then there is the sense of touch. I love feeling the green grass on my feet and the wind on my face.

All of the above is taken for granted by all of us. I wonder what life would be like without the Earth's beauty? I don't think I want to know. Therefore, I will continue to teach my students how to take of the Earth and at the same time I will practice what I teach.

Morning Glories!

Iteach I so agree about the perfume the earth sends out every season is different. Yesterday with the sun shining like crazy it smelled so good. I cannot describe it and it cannot be duplicated in a perfume manufactured in a lab.

I wracked my brain for some new tips and I came up with two.

I have a wooden rack in my kitchen that I have had for years. It is collapsable (sp) and stands about 5 feet tall. I dry clothing on it. Anything that is delicate or very nice goes on the rack. Especially old quilts and sweaters. I estimate I save at least one to two dryer loads of electricty a week by using this rack. It is such a habit I forgot about it.

The second one I do is haul all of our newspaper and mixed media paper to a recycler. You may say so most of us do. Well the one I use is for the food bank. We have a huge recycler there and when it is full we call and have it emptied and the food bank receives money for the load. So I am asking everyone to check in their area to see if this program is in place for local charities. Saving the earth and feeding hungry people is a great thing!

Oh speaking of racks Mary your teddy is lovely but ummmm it makes your rack look so small. LOL

Good Morning!

ITEACH: I stare in wonderment at the beauty of our sunsets here in Arizona. I love the monsoon storms..thunder, lightning and the rain. I don't like the wind too much though. I'm like you, I run outside to see if there is a rainbow after the storm. Have you ever just looked at the clouds to see what shapes they make? It's one of my favorite things to do. The Earth truly is an amazing place, and it gives us so much. It's only right that we should do our best to give something back.

I've been thinking about this for a while now, but I think it's time to cancel most of my magazine subscriptions and start reading things online. That will cut down on our paper consumption..it's a small thing, but it's a start.

I do like the smell of rain, however I don't feel relaxed, cause its hard to run thru the raindrops..

I do like the smell of dirt tho,
especially when I am in Home Depot and am in the garden department, there is something about that smell that makes me happy.. Very earthy

The other day in the park with the Cherry Blossoms, I felt good, cause it was just so nice to see what the earth grows..

What I don't like tho is rainy dog smell, yesterday when the girl that works for me came in after she brought Bonnie home, I had to tell her she smelled, yes, I told her, she was really ok with me telling her, I just could not take the smell. So I sprayed Febreeze all over her, and then she left..

I hope I passed my assignment.. :O)

I adore you Iteach.. and miss ya..

Good Morning Hooters and congrats on 1st Lynn.

Iteach, I love the smells and sounds too. Well, most of them. I can live without 'fresh' farm air if you know what I mean.

I have bought a bevy of reusable bags and I cringe if I forget them and am forced to use the stores bags. However, we do recycle them at the stores, and keep a few at home for Peppers natural fertilizer.

We save all our cans and donate them to the Boy Scouts. Things I used to throw away (if in good shape) I now donate to charity. We even donated a car one year.

I admit to not really giving it any thought until I became a Grandma. Now I look at everything different because I want my cherished grandbabies to have a healthy world to grow up in.

Hope everyone has a great day. bbl

Lyndeeeee....Congrats on first!

Iteach....Wonderful blog!!! Sunday was a beautiful Spring day here, sunny and a little cool. We were driving back from CT when I noticed everything had suddenly become green. There were buds on all the trees and the Cherry trees were starting to bloom. All of a sudden, I had this little happy, energetic feeling. I guess it can be equated with realizing that the winter hibernation was over and it was time to begin enjoying the outdoors again. Too bad the 4000 other people on the road with me had the same idea. :)

Happy Earth Day, Owls!

Lovely, lovely blog Miss iteach! Your love for this amazing planet is awe inspsiring. Thank you for your beautiful thoughts and words!!!

Here's my homework assignment...plagiarized and everything!

Earth Day Poetry

This Old Earth

(to the tune of "This Old Man")

This old earth
Needs our help
To stay fresh and clean and green
With a pick it up; pitch it in; and throw it in the can--
This old earth needs a helping hand!

Everdyay is Earth Day

Everyday is Earth Day,
If it's cold or wet or hot
Pitch in to save the planet
It's the only one we've got.

Save The Earth

People everywhere
breathe the same air,
share the same seas,
live together on the land.
People everywhere
who learn, plan,
work, care,
can
save the earth.

Betty Miles

In Tune With Mother Nature

If you listen for the songbirds
As they greet the summer sun,
And love the way the wind can make
The trees sings just for fun;

If you like to hear the ocean
As it drums upon the shore,
And imagine all the whales out there,
And hope they'll sing some more;

If you think of all the animals
As players in a band,
Each with a lovely tune to play,
All needed on the land;

And know that as a boy or girl
A woman or a man
You have a vital role to play
In Mother Nature's plan;

If you honor every living thing
As a part of nature's treasure
You're in tune with Mother Nature
So let's all sing her song together.

Earth Day

I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.

And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
Naturally.

That's why we
Celebrate this day.
That's why across
The world we say:
As long as life,
As dear, as free,
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.

Jane Yolen

Our Earth

The Earth is ours to enjoy
For every little girl and boy.
But we must always be aware.
That all its beauty we must share
With all the children yet to come,
Who want to laugh and play and run
Around the trees and in the fields.

So we must keep our planet free
From messy trash and debris
With air that's clean and fresh and clear
For all to breathe from year to year.
We must never ever abuse
Our sweet Earth that's ours to use.

Recycling In My Home

(to the tune of "The Wheels On the Bus")

Recycling in my home goes round and round,
Round and round, round and round.
Recycling in my home goes round and round,
All through the day.

Tie up the papers and take them back,
Take them back, take them back.
Tie up the papers and take them back,
All through the day.

Crush the cans and take them back.....
Rinse the milk bottles and take them back....
Save the glass and take it back......

Working on the Trash

(to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad")

We've been working on RECYCLING All the trash we can,
We've been working on recycling, It's a very simple plan,
Separate your glass and paper,
Separate your plastic and tin.
Take the trash that you've recycled To your recycling bin!

We've been working on REDUCING All the trash we can.
We've been working on reducing It's a very simple plan.
Don't go wasting any products, Use just exactly what you need.
Don't buy things in extra wrapping, Reduce and you'll succeed!

We've been working on REUSING All the trash we can.
We've been working on reusing, It's a very simple plan.
If it's a paper bag you're using, Don't use it once, use it twice!
Give old clothes and toys to someone, To reuse them would be nice!

Working on Recycling

(to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad")

We've been working on recycling
All the trash we can
We've been working on recycling
It's a very simple plan
Separate your glass and paper
Separate you plastic and tin
Take the trash you've recycled...
To the recycling bin!!!

Reduce Reuse Recycle

(to the tune of "The More We Get Together")

Reduce Reuse Recycle
Recycle... recycle
Reduce Reuse Recycle
It's easy to do
Cause your trash
And my trash
Make up way
Too much trash
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Its easy to do!

anyway - the sunrises and sunsets here are AMAZING......

ITEACH - Great Earth Day blog!! My suggestion kinda goes hand in hand with TINA!! Share the shower (or bath).....nekkid!!! Truly this is something that we did in my house growing up (well, until a certain age). But even as we got older, my mother was the queen of the timed shower!!!

Another idea came to me last night and early this morning!! The power of the cabbage!! I made my homemade veggie beef soup. I put a 1/2 head of cabbage in it, so it really wasn't long and the power of the cabbage took over!! Holy crap.....if I could just bottle it!! Jet propulsion at a fraction of the cost!!

Wishing everyone a beautiful EARTH DAY!!!

And I don't care what Kermit the Frog says......it's EASY being green!!!

Happy Earth Day Owls.

Iteach, I envy everyone who can take long walks just to admire nature. My knees don't allow me to do that anymore, but walking along the levee across from my house used to be my most favorite thing to do.

Watching Regis and Kelly this morning someone emailed a great suggestion that I think I will adopt...to save on packaging materials, I will only buy the large bags of M&Ms.

When I talked to my son this morning and told him of my plight yesterday with the goose, he said in the spirit of Earth Day I should have COOKED IT! Ewwwwwwwwww NOT FUNNY!

sacBarb said...

LynnD, You are up early to get #1. I have always dried all my clothes on hangers inside the house. This hasn't been for the purpose of being green, but I find they don't shrink as much. The only things I put in the dryer are linens. Now I realize it is also a good thing for the earth.

Your suggestion of recycling for charities is a great one and I am going to make that suggestion to our food bank. We are always trying to think of ways to bring in revenue. Thanks.

Got this in an email from work today:

Earth Day Facts…

April 22 is the first official day of spring in the Northern hemisphere and of fall in the Southern hemisphere and was chosen to be Earth Day for this reason.

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to watch a TV for three hours - equivalent to half a gallon of gasoline.

If every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. Unfortunately only 27% of all American newspapers are recycled.

More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.

The amount of wood and paper we throw away each year is enough to heat 50,000,000 homes for 20 years.

Recycling 1 plastic bottle not only saves anywhere from 100 to 1000 years in the landfill but also saves the environment from the emissions in producing new bottles as well as the oil used to produce that bottle.

For every 1 ton of plastic that is recycled we’d save the equivalent of 2 people’s energy use for 1 year, the amount of water used by 1 person in 2 month’s time AND almost 2000 pounds of oil.

Tina~in_ut said...

....and another one:

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.

~Native American Proverb

sacBarb said...

Zona, I have mixed emotions about reading mags or the paper online. I realize it saves trees, but our local newspaper has just laid off 90 people because the circulation has gone down so much. So many newspapers have folded and I hate the thought that ours may too, and maybe we won't have them at all anymore. That will be sad.

When Sharon and I were in Hawaii just vegging on the beach she started telling me what shapes she saw in the clouds and soon I was doing the same thing. I had never done that before and now I do it all the time. Fun.

sacBarb said...

IBB, Congrats to your co-worker on her Earth Day baby.

VIG, Thanks for the Earth Day songs and poetry.

Tinka, I'm glad you enjoyed your time with family for your daughter's birthday. She has finally caught up to you.

Sandie and Zona, LOL at the natural fertilizer from the fur kids.

sacBarb said...

Goldie, you reminded me that I donated my Hubby's pickup to the Children's home after he died. It wasn't very old, but it needed some work done and I saw an ad that stated they would take vehicles even if they didn't run. I didn't really need it and I didn't want to fix it to sell it. They were very grateful and I felt really good about it.

I also donate clothes to Women Escaping A Violent Environment (WEAVE). In addition to giving these women a place to go and protecting them and their children, they also help them get back into the workforce and give them clothes they can use for work.

sacBarb said...

LynnD Congrats on being first, firstly and firsted!

Tina You'll never be teacher's pet with that cig hanging out of your mouth.

iteach That was a great blog you wrote today. I have been noticing lately that there are beautiful floral fragrances in the air at about dusk. Our sunset last night was beautiful, with pink streaks going across the sky. There were huge clouds overhead that appeared to be bright pink as well, giving everything a pink cast. It was like looking at the world through rose colored glasses. : )

I use an Advair inhaler in the morning because of my asthma. Part of the directions are to rinse and gargle with warm water after using it. I used to turn on the faucet and wait for the hot water, then it dawned on me that I just need to heat up a cup of water in the microwave for 30-40 seconds. Duh!

I do recycle paper, cardboard, plastic and glass but I had never thought about the foil on Kisses before, either. I just realized that my Altoid tins are recyclable, too. I return my plastic shopping bags to the store. I give useable clothes and household items to Goodwill.

Sandie said...

Congrats on first, LynnD!

Mrs. iteach, I have worked hard on my homework (I googled it), which I think was to tell others ways we can help our earth. (If I seem a little fuzzy-headed, it's because I had to sit next to Tina, if you remember, and she was giving examples of toxic odors.) I also see that VIG is trying to knock me out of the teacher's pet position.

One of the ways that we can all help the earth is to have our own little compost pile in our backyards. Compost is a soil conditioner, mulch and fertilizer all wrapped into one. It feeds the soil microorganisms that help plants stay healthy, adds nutrients to the soil, and helps clay soil drain better and sandy soil retain water. Plus, composting reduces your contribution to the waste stream by recycling yard and kitchen waste into the world's best soil.

You can google it to see how to make your own compost pile.

Happy Earth Day, owls!!

Good afternoon Mrs. Iteach! Don't you look lovely today! Is that a new hairdo? Your outfit is soooo pretty! Have I told you that you are my favorite teach? You're so kind and understanding. Here's my homework Mrs. Iteach.

DON'T FLUSH THAT POO AWAY!

The term “humanure” refers to human waste which is recycled by methods of composting, and which can later be used for gardening or agricultural purposes. Instead of using a toilet, you might choose to use the bucket system, which is essentially a five gallon bucket. After doing one’s business, sawdust or straw is sprinkled on the bucket’s contents to prevent odor, add carbon, and absorb liquids. (Believe me: it really does keep down odor.) Humanure can then be dumped into compost bins, where it decomposes and cures after one to two years. After this time, you are left with nothing but purely organic matter, something quite like dirt. As long as the humanare is given enough time to decompose, there should be no fear about the spread of pathogens, and this material can be used as a soil amendment in gardening or agriculture. It’s that simple! It’s nature at its finest.

Just_Lin said...

Hmmm TINA: I think I eat Hershey kisses so fast that I didn't notice they were wrapped in anything!! (just kidding..I don't really eat the foil)!

I do use the fabric bags at the grocery store but I like GOLDIE forget many times to bring them in so I then stimulate the economy by purchasing more of them. I have quite a nice selection now of colors, etc.

ZONA: YOU are going to give up magaizines subscriptions right when I still owe you one? Maybe I should just recycle mine.

I wonder who the second person will be voted off Idol tonight. I don't like when it gets down to the last because usually I don't want anyone to go. I loved Adam's look last night. He is a nice looking guy...for a youngster...hmm, wonder if he likes cougars! :)

Good evening feathered friends!

LYNNNNNN...first and last! You go girl!

SHIRLEY's post is a great segue into my suggestion to help the earth...water conservation!

Get rid of those darn automatic flush, supposedly water saving, toilets.

Picture this...a nice dinner. A glass of wine, a couple glasses of water and a few cups of coffee as you chat with your dinner partner. All of a sudden your bladder is fuller then that 5 gallon bucket could ever hold. You amble your way to the restroom...legs crossed. You get to the one vacant stall. Rush in and WHOOSH, the damn toilet flushes. The seat is now sprinkled with the spray. Legs still crossed you yank a wad of T.P and dry the seat. Grab a paper toilet seat shield and it falls in the pot. Grab another one and strategically place it on the seat when...WHOOSH the frickin toilet flushes again swallowing the paper seat cover. Thankfully the cover protected the seat, so it is still dry. Grab another paper protector and finally get it into place. Turn around to unzip the jeans. Now pants around ankles and legs still crossed and the fucker flushes again! Now, half nekkid you repeat the process and finally get your butt on a paper protected toilet seat. Before you can even relax enough to pee you take a sigh of relief when...WHOOSH the mutha fuckah flushes again, this time spraying your ass with ice cold water!!! WTF. Finally you say screw it, pee a river. Wipe your ass and half your back, pull up your pants from your ankles, prepare to leave and...the somnabitch toilet WON'T FLUSH! Now you have to stand over a pot of pee trying to find the damn little button to make it flush!

And this saves water how?????????
Not to mention the tree that died for that T.P and all the paper seat covers that were wasted.

Go figure!

Maureen said...

DIANNE...if you are the cougar, how could he not ;)

Lynn D said...

Oh Good Lord I have been catching up on comments.

Ok I have saved all the damn foil from the Hershey Kisses now what the hell do I do with all the paper strips???

Shirley I absolutely draw the line at human waste compost! There is no bucket big enough!

Whabbear a billion years huh? Is that sun frying predicted to happen before the great flood when the ice caps melt? Do I invest in sunscreen or boats?

Dianne in D town: I tried the blue pills and my boobs are no perkier! However my big toe on my right foot is pointing north. :) Thanks for the advice! (((Hugs)))

Jodi Hodi Friendship oh Friendship! Love ya Ethel!

Owls I have read all the comments and I have so enjoyed reading about your passion for the Earth too.

For the past week I have been basically been a "single" parent. Therefore, I haven't had a lot of time to fly over here. Hubby has been at the library a lot studying for a big math test. He is trying to fullfill his dream of being a math teacher. It is a long story but there is a possibility that dream might come true shortly. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
