~ Killing a Killer ~

by Tina~in_ut

It was very upsetting to hear of the murder of Dr. George Tiller on Sunday. He was one of the few doctor's who still performed late-term abortions in our country. He was ushering at his church when a gunman came in and shot him. He was a husband, father, and grandfather. I don't understand how and why this had to happen.

As someone who is completely and utterly against abortion/killing an innocent child, I find that I am dumbfounded at people who are in agreement with me, yet are for the death penalty or are okay with someone taking this man's life. Killing is killing, no matter what form it takes. One is not better than another. One is not worse than another. Each can be avoided. In the case of abortion, in my opinion, the woman's choice was whether or not to have sex in the first place. I realize that those FOR abortion bring up the case of rape, but abortion in the case of rape/incest only happens 1% of the time and that can also be taken care of before conception in the emergency room of a hospital. Killing this man in cold blood will not stop what he was doing at his clinic, either. Someone else will just take over.

We are all put on this earth to live together. We all have differing views, but we need to respect each others views. I'm not someone who goes and pickets or goes to rally's. It's okay if you do. It's just not my thing. I prefer to pray about our differences. (I have a friend at work who knows this and it drives her crazy because I do it in front of her!) In the end, I believe we all answer to God and He is the final judge.

Yup, Ms. Tina, this topic has been heavy on my mind too.

I also think about all those people that witnessed that act of violence in church. They will never be the same again.

Good Morning Hooters!

1st again you pretty bitch? LOL jk

I have some of the same views and some very different view from you tina~. That said, I am totally disturbed that someone protesting death would choose death as their way of protest.

Hope all the Hooters ahve a good day- good morning iteach!

Hi Iteach!

Tina this story the last few days have caused me great anxiety and depression. How someone can have so much hate that they will kill someone but then to proclaim they are a christian and enter a church and kill the person they hate is so beyond my ability to reason out and makes me sick to my stomach.

I am pro choice. I will always believe it is a womans right to choose. What she and her family and doctor decide is between them and none of my business. Something I have learned of late is even those of us who are pro choice really don't like abortion but see that the alternatives to not having this available in a safe medical enviroment would be even more horrendous.

I do have an issue with blaming the woman for making the decision to have sex so therefor it is all her fault. It takes two, a woman does not get pregnant by herself. In a society where we keep voting down sex education and we don't want to fund easy and cheap access to birth control and don't want to support those welfare Moms what do we expect? Oh we put up a good front about those dead beat Dads and try to collect some child support but the fact is we don't try hard enough on either side. I keep wondering if this issue would be different if we legislated about mens reproductive rights. Say if you father more than one child that you cannot support you would then be court ordered to have a vasectomy. Wonder how that would go over? Somehow I think the conversation would take on a whole new context in our society.

I keep wondering what is goal. Do we force women to carry these pregnancies full term? Do we lock them up and make sure that they cannot do harm to themselves or the fetus? Then we force them to give them up for adoption? Kind of like a baby mill? How far do we take it?

What about the cases of incest and rape? Do we force them? In many cases we are talking about young girls being abused? What about women whose lives are in danger from her pregnancy? Do we make her have the child even tho we know the outcome very likely will kill her. Is her life less important?

I have read on other blogs about some of the women Doctor Tiller treated in their own words. It is heart breaking.

In my opinion this is domestic terrorism. To create such fear for anyone to receive Legal Medical treatment is wrong. To intimidate anyone who does not have your beliefs is wrong! Where does it all stop?

These thoughts and more have been going round and round in my brain and I can't seem to stop them.

The only answer I can come up with is, if your truly are a christian shouldn't you worry about your own relationship with God and not your neighbors? No one can convince me that this is what God wants. My beliefs may not be my neighbors beliefs and it is not my right to force them upon them or to label them wicked or evil because they don't believe what I believe. It is to show them courtesy and to find common ground to discuss these issues reasonably even when we don't agree. By doing that I honor my beliefs and the God I believe in.

To glorify what this man did is disgusting, for any of our elected officials to ignore the red flags that are right in front of us is criminal and dangerous and many more people may die.

Tina thank you for doing this blog today. I kept thinking about writing one but have been so emotional that I was afraid to write down what is in my head. I have wavered between Rage and despair. Sometimes it is so hard to be a human just trying to seek out answers and guidance.

Ok enough for now I hope by writing just this bit my mind may get some rest and relief.

Off to feed hungry children today. Bless you all!

Tina....This is such a heavy topic, with many different facets. I don't think that I could ever bring myself to have an abortion, but I respect others right to do so. I respect that right for three reasons. 1) The systems currently in place for taking care of unwanted children are an abomination. An Adoption is ridiculously expensive and not covered by insurance eliminating many loving and caring people from the adoption pool. Foster care??? That system is even worse! There are not enough checks and follow ups to ensure that the children are being taken care of properly. There is a case currently in my cities courts of a 10 year old girl who was in a foster home and is currently classified as brain dead. Children's Services had been to the home on several occasions and were told that the marks and scars on this little girl were self inflicted. The social workers accepted this explanation and did no further follow ups. 2) I do not believe in the type of late term abortions that this doctor did unless there is a medical reason for it. For instance, I know of a women who had a late term abortion when she found out that the child she was carrying had severe health issues and would not have any "quality" to it's life. 3) If I remember my biology, there are several stages that a fertilized egg must go through before it becomes an embryo and even then, it is not yet viable on its own. If it's not viable, does that make removing it killing it? I don't know. I don't think I could do it, but there are so many variations on why women do, that I don't think I (or the government) should be able to make that choice for them. It's between them and God.

Good morning!

Such a heavy topic, yet I am very glad you wrote it.

I do not think I could ever have an abortion myself, but do respect the decision of those who do.

My opinion of abortion was formed early in my nursing career, based on things I've seen and situations I've been involved with. I won't go into why or give the details, but will say I am very glad women have the choice.

Killing Dr. Tiller was so very hypocritical, if you are against killing, what is the rationale?

I respect everyone's opinion of this difficult subject. I know we won't all agree.

OK I will check back in a while! I hope everyone has a nice day today!

G'morning Everyone!

TINA: I could never understand how someone could think abortion is murder..but killing the doctor that performed the abortion, wasn't. No matter how they tried to justify it..it just never made sense to me. The fact that Dr. Tiller's killer could walk into a church..a church!!..and do this in the name of the Lord, just boggles the mind.

The whole incident is a tragedy. I just feel so badly for Dr. Tiller's family.

Incredibly thought provoking blog today TINA, thank you!

TINA - Your blog has been heavy on my heart all morning. It hit very close to home. I am pro choice and always will be. I was raped when I was 17 and there was NOT the technology 26 years ago for me to do anything about the conception. I did, however, have an abortion. It was NOT my choice to become pregnant, but I just couldn't carry that child to term. I will forever be thankful that I had the LEGAL right to do so. I may not always agree with why someone chooses, but that is between them and their God. I also have a hard time understanding anyone who would kill a doctor in the name of being pro life!! They truly are hypocrites in my book.

LYNN D - You brought up many of the things that I was thinking. Thank you!!

I'm so glad I got it when I did, otherwise I wouldn't have gotten that picture.

The guy that played taps @ my brother's funeral (he was also the one that wrote a poem that we had engraved on the back of Dale's stone) his father died and I'm going to the wake this afternoon. I am then going to Sam's Orchestra concert tonight. Tomorrow I am planting some geraniums that I purchased from my niece and nephew thru the band, and also planting the rose bush I got from my kids for Mother's Day. And I too love that we haven't had to turn the air on yet!!

Happy Wednesday Owls.

Tina, A very thought provoking blog today. I have mixed feelings about abortion, but basically I am pro choice. It isn't the stance my church takes, but I am very conflicted about making a woman carry a baby to term when the circumstances are dire. Like others, I believe the decision is only between the woman and her God.

The A/C guy should be here any minute, so I don't know if I will be back till much later. Waving a wing to all the Owls. I hope you all have a great day.

Tina Congrats on #1 even though I think it must be cheaqting since you wrote the blog.

It is a very, very thought provoking blog today. Thank you for writing it. In my opinion, the man who killed the doctor is a wacko and murderer. He is a fool and a legend in his own mind. Women need the counsel and medical services of their doctors and no one has a right to interject their own wishes onto them or terrorize them or their doctors.

Jodi Thank you for your trust in sharing your experience with us. I was in the same situation when I was young. In those days, there were no legal options. It was very scary to put my life in the hands of people I did not know, to be snuck in and out of the back door of a house I did not know, in a city I did not know. At least the procedure was performed by a retired doctor whose name we got from my mother's distant cousin who was a nurse. It was a very emotional decision to make and a very frightening experience, not only for me but for my parents as well. There was such a stigma attached to being an unwed mother in those days that it seemed like the only option. I cried over the experience for about 2 years but I still feel it was the best choice for me but a very, very difficult one.

Jodi said...

JUST LIN - Thanks for sharing. What a scary experience. Thankfully you found a doctor that you could trust. ((((HUGS)))) to you!!!

goldie said...

Jodi- very couragous of you to speak about your personal experience and I applaud you for it. Being raped in itself is a horrible thing, I can not imagine being forced to carry a child from that experience. This is the reason EXACTLY that it should be OUR choice as a woman.

Oh, and for those of you who think the necklace looks good on Jodi's rack- well wait until you see the 'rack' that will be sporting it when she hands it over this weekend!! just saying it will be worth the wait.....LOL

East Bay J said...

JL big (((HUGS))) to you, too. I cannot imagine that experience.

I knew someone years ago (she was from Calif. and has since died) who was so passionate about a woman's right to choose that she would go to the demonstrations in Washington DC and march (when they tried to overturn Roe v. Wade).

She ended up opening a clinic in some remote area of Wyoming or Montana because she was so fearful of the pro-life threats.

I am not sure what happened to the clinic since she died. She opened it with a ob/gyn physician who felt the same was as she did.

The clinic was very busy from what I heard.

TINA - Thank you for your thought provoking blog today. Besides murder being horrifying, I find it very hypocritical to murder in the name of pro-life.

I hope that we will find ways to eliminate the need for so many abortions. In the meantime, I would hate to see us go back to the old days of back alley butchers, which is why so many doctors were for legalizing abortions.

I love the OWL'S NEST because we can come here and be who we are and still love each other without judgement. Personally I don't think anyone died and made me God, although, I think I am next in line LOL.

Tina.. I am for abortion, as I believe a women should have a choice. I am also for the death penalty as if you kill you should be killed.. However to kill and killer makes no sense at all. Sad really..

Many years ago my cousin became pregnant, for circumstances she had to have the pregnancy terminated, I went with her, it was a hard decision but she had to do it.. I am glad I was there for her as she could not do it alone. There are no regrets, we both know he had to be done.. She has had a child since then, and is happily married.. It just was not meant to be..

Well, after she instructed us, she turned to me and I went right up..haha. I used to love headstands as a kid and when I was younger, so it was so easy. I have a hard time with my quads and hamstrings..they scream at me in some of the poses. And, I have a hard time with cobra pose because it takes a lot of upper body strength. I kind of just flop into it..haha..it's pretty funny.

Someone close to me had to have an abortion. I was about 10 years old. In Indiana, it was illegal. They drove to New York and got it done. On the way back, she almost bled to death. Thank goodness she survived. Personally, for me, abortion is not something I could consider. BUT, I am so thankful that now my daughter and all the women in my life can make that decision rather than the one that almost cost me someone dear to me. It is a choice and women shouldn't have to choose to drive across the country or use a coat hangar if they do not want a child brought into the world. They should be able to do it early and with discretion.

Tina: Very courageous blog, and I loved it!

As somebody who doesn't believe that our actions are subject to judgment after death, abortion is a tricky issue with me. I can't help but feel that there is some nugget of truth in your point, that the choice is back at whether to have sex or not.

And yet, I am firmly opposed to governments actively limiting the availability of abortions. I basically feel about a fetus about what Benjamin Franklin felt about newborn babies (of what use are they?), so a fetus doesn't have any intrinsic worth or importance: it only has "reflected importance", from human beings (like the Father and Mother) who care about the fetus because they are trying to bring a baby into the world. Then the fetus (and newborn) does have intrinsic worth and importance... in fact, oodles of both, just as it should.

But if neither the mother, the father, nor anyone else has a vested interest in the fetus, I don't believe the state should put a positive value on it, and the state should take no action to protect it.

One thing is sure: I don't believe that the fact that our country permits abortions is going to bring down the wrath of an apoplectic deity on our collective shoulders, because some kind of huge negative collective debt is being generated by the abortions performed now.

Having stated that rather predictable liberal position, I do want to say this, as well. I was never personally in a position of having the prospect of an unwanted child. I would hope that if I had been, I would actually have taken Tina's position, that I made my decision when I had the unprotected sex, and therefore kept the baby.

It would be pretty nifty, I think, as I enter my early 50's, to have a son or daughter in my life!

Owls, is there no way to persuade others that they should not have abortions, but just by argument and example and dialog, rather than by getting the government involved? Could the power of persuasion alone eventually evolve society into a place where where abortions are legal, but rare?

Are we still hugging or groping? I guess I missed it.

J/L, That is the second thing I feel honored that you have shared with us. It is sad that it wasn't made legal earlier than it was. You were lucky that you didn't go to a butcher. Too many women suffered severe consequences before abortion was made legal.

Lani, If you come to Sac with the necklace, I will find a hunk to wear (or at least model) it. But if you really want a bear to wear it, you don't live that far from Whabbear. Maybe he will wear it.

Zona, (((HUGS)))

MEK, (((HUGS))) to you too.
