Summer brings many things but the end of summer brings a fantastic and wonderful specific thing! THE FAIR! When I was young, it was the Delaware County fair. It has demolition derbies, band contests, the midway, the barkers, the games (with the people that try so hard to get you to come and try!), the food, the music, the booths and the animals. I have been to so many festivals including The Indiana State Fair, The Portland Steam Engine Show, The Czech Fest, and other miscellaneous city and county fairs. Nowadays, I go to the Kentucky State Fair.
The Kentucky State Fair has probably the same things as other state fairs but it seems unique in many ways! It has food, quilts, cakes, tobacco (of course), ugly lamps, photos, doll houses and many more contests that people can enter their items. Walking around these displays gives me a glimpse of the unique and creative people who live in this state. I love going to the different county booths and filling out the contests slips to win the prize basket or the trip to the bed and breakfast in the county it represents. Also, I love all the rulers, pencils, and free stuff that fill up my bag! I know that 99% of it will go in the garbage, but for some reason I just still have to have it! Another area has the animals with mamas with their baby piglets, pigeons, rabbits, roosters, cows, horses and so much more. Also, there is the vendor section that sells everything from toys to hot tubs!
If you get bored of all that you can take in a pig race, talent contest, concerts (many locals bands, national bands)or a bite to eat and drink. The smells and sights are incredible! When I walk around and smell the pungent aroma of the onions and peppers for the Italian sausage sandwiches or the sweet and rich smell of the funnel cakes or fried snickers bars, or the tangy and mouthy watering smell of the pork barbecue, I feel like I am in my Utopia! The coco nutty tropical drinks, roasted corn on a stick, strawberries dipped in chocolate..it seems like everything is on a stick or comes in a long tall fancy cup! I love to watch the people. Some have too many beers and they are squatted down, trying to feel better while a worried loved one leans over to help them. Young people holding hands with their girlfriends/boyfriends, people waiting in line excited to go on a thrill ride. Also it is nice to see the older people walking with family, talking and having fun.
Kids can draw, have their teeth cleaned, learn about safety, get in a police car or helicopter and so many more things. I think it is interesting to watch the children that come from small towns and bring their livestock. They will play corn hole, sit around and chat with family, walk around and look at things. It must be a very exciting time of year for them. The animal smell that is so pungent and strong to me, but it is probably not even noticeable to them.
As I was walking around the fair last night, I wanted so much for each and every one of you to get to enjoy this to the level that I do. The moon was full, the weather was perfect, the midway was packed with people and the smells were out of this world. I really wish you could have been there!
My parents met at the Delaware County Fair. My mom and dad went to a Sock Hop and from that night they went on to get married and have three kids, the middle one was me! No wonder I love fairs!

The fair was always something we looked forward to as the highlight of the summer when we were kids. I still enjoy it, and the indulgence of funnel cakes and corn dogs. Oh, and as a kid, cotton candy was the highlight!!

What a wonderful blog Bebbi. I enjoyed reading it and looking at your pictures. It was just as if you were sent to our Saanichton Fair and asked to do a report on it for our local paper. There is so much similarity it is amazing. The only two differences I noticed were the demolition derby and the strawberries coated with chocolate. I have never seen them at the fair but I would to have the strawberries added. Our fair is the largest and oldest Agricultural Fair in Western Canada. I have been going just about every year since I was six years old. For years it was always in the same place and we felt sad when they had to move it because they needed more room. It didn't lose its atmosphere, however, it still has the same 'feel'.

Wow, Bebbi! We had two fall fairs that I attended as a kid, the local Beaver Valley Fall fair and the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. Both bring back floods of memories, but the one that stands out the most is the Beaver Valley (local) fair, which was (of course) tiny compared to the "Ex".
Still, I'll never forget the excitement I felt when I won pocket change at the games of skill, like ringing the glass milk bottles!

Great blog Bebbi!The first state fair I ever went to was the Delaware State Fair and it was a blast!
We have The Eastern States Exposition...otherwise known as The Big E...coming up in Sept. It is the state fair for MA, ME, CT, NH, VT and RI and is HUGE! It has all the agricultural events as well as cooking demonstrations, circus acts and concerts, (Fergie, Sugarland and Natasha Bedingfield)a midway, and of course food and crafts galore. There is a "BIG E" Cream puff that is to die for and is probably 1000 calories, but you burn it off with all the walking. You could spend a weekend there and not see everything. There are buildings for each state offering the specialties of each (RI clam chowder, VT cheese and NH blueberry pie yum!) I can't wait......
Our Saanichton Fair always signals the end of summer here. When I was six we lived just down the road from the Fair. We didn't have much money in those days so it was mainly walking around and seeing all the animals and displays. I think we had a ride on the merry-go-round a couple of times. When I compare that to the money my daughter's family spends there each year it makes me dizzy.
When I was a teenager we would go with a group and spend most of the time at the midway. The girls who had boyfriends who were good at baseball always ended up with large stuffed animals that they proudly showed off as they walked around. I always wanted one of those large panda bears but never did get one. I did get a Kewpie doll and I still have it. It sits on my computer and it's looking at me as I type.
When my kids were little they were always so excited about the Fair. I think they liked the cotton candy and caramel apples the best. Of course they loved the baby animals too. I have such warm memories of slowly walking back to the car at the end of the long day. The little ones could hardly walk. The smell of hay was so sweet. Today when I drive through the country, the aroma of hay wafts through the car and my mind immediately goes 'Back to the Fair'.
The Fair is a major event in my daughter's home. All summer they tend to their vegetables with an eye to which ones they will enter in the Fair. My daughter made 127 jars of all different kinds of jams on Monday. One of each kind will be entered. My grandchildren enter about 10 categories each year. It is amazing how many different ones there are; from drawing, modeling with clay, sticks, stones, to name just a few. All four members of their family have won dozens of ribbons through-out the many years they have competed. They spend basically the whole weekend there, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I always meet them with Dave or Brian on the Saturday so they can show us where their prizes are.
They take their trailer out early in the morning and bring it home late each night. The days are spent watching the competing events and the evenings are spent at the midway. They win $5.00 for first prize, $3.00 for second and $2.00 for third. They also get in free if they enter 3 categories. Even at that they spend more money (particularly at the midway) in one weekend then I think we spent all the years we took the kids when they were little. It is worth it to them, if only for the memories they are making for their kids.
I am getting excited. Only 4 more sleeps until the Fair.
I'm back! I swear Mr. Lynn D thinks I am the female version of Speed Racer! He cuts it close to the edge sometimes.
Bebbi, I love the fair and carnivals and all things involved with rides and winning cheap prizes! LOL
My Dad in many ways was a big kid and if their was a local carnival or the fair was going on he always made time to take us!
I remember growing up one fair in particular. I was about 10 or 11 and I really wanted to ride the Zipper it was a new ride then. They would not let me ride it without an adult to take me on. You have to sit in an enclosed basket and it goes around and then they reverse it and the baskets free float! Very exciting!!
I begged and begged my Dad to take me on it. He was not real keen as he did not do rides very often. I pulled out the sad puppy face and welling tears and he caved. I was in heaven! We waited in line for quite awhile and my Dad kept asking me are you sure! Of course I was sure! Helllooooo what kid isn't sure of a ride that is designed to scare the bejeezus out of you!
We finally got on and strapped in. Let me preface this with a little note. Before we got on there was a sign that said empty your pockets before riding this ride. Well lets just say we didn't!
Well the ride started and we were off. I screamed my damn fool head off and then started crying and then begging to be let off the ride! about a 1/4 way through the ride my Dad and I started to get pelted by little flying objects.
I realized my back pocket was full of little tubes of seed beads and other goodies I had bought earlier and they had come out and hit the basket and the lids popped off so the beads were flying everywhere! Then coins, pennies, nickles,quarters and dimes..... I am still screaming and crying and carrying on!
Finally the ride was over and I could barely get out of the basket and walk. My pockets were empty and Dad was checking his, when yep you guessed it all of the coin was gone in both pockets, but luckily he still had his wallet and comb!!!
My Dad looked at me and said never again!!! I looked at him through the tears and said well at least I did not throw up!
Years later we do laugh about this and figured whoever ran that ride had a great week during the fair and probably bought a new car from all of the coin they collected from us unsuspecting fools!
PS I still love rollercoasters!
I love a fair but my favorites now are the local County fairs. They are smaller but I think much more fun because of it. I love going to get my favorite fair food here in WA raspberry filled scones and I always have to have an onion fair burger with cheese of course.
We have quit doing our State fair in Puyallup WA because the cost is just crazy.

What a great blog bebbi. You did a great job painting a picture of the whole fair experience. We have already had our fair. Mr. Mary & I always save one day to get our "junk food" fill. We love the corn dogs,lemonade,caramel corn,& homemade chips & fries.

I am such a morning person and have loved watching the sun rise at 5:30-6a.m. throughout the summer. HOWEVER....
awoke early this morning and it was still dark out (BOO, HISS)and 45 degrees. Since I'd left every window open all night, it was a bit 'nipply'. But how I do love this time of year. Mid-80's every day, chilly nights. My MS profile WeatherClicker tells me it's finally 50* and 100% humidity (shouldn't that be, like, rain??) but I've been out washing windows in the bright sunshine.

Bebbi What a great blog! You really did capture the whole essence of what it's like at the fair. I used to perform at the Los Angeles County Fair every year as a child. I was a dancer. Most of my time at the fair was centered around the stage. I do remember cupie dolls very fondly as well as the smells of the cotton candy and other foods.

I don't know how well you can see it, but this is a picture of me in tutu and toe shoes, resting between performances at the L.A. County Fair. I was about 12 in this pic. This was about the time Custard and I were really starting to get under each other's skin and on each other's nerves. LOL

I'll have to scrounge around and see if I can find any pics from my first real date with my ex. Talk about "had me at Hello"! I lived in a Seattle apartment with my college and after roommate, who had introduced us, at the time. He picked me up in his Corvette convertible and we spent a VERY long day--or was it a weekend?-- at the PNE (Pacific Northwest Exposition) in Vancouver, BC. Good times!
Just googled the PNE...it's going on right now. Tonight's Summer Night Concert is Air Supply, and they've already had Billy Ray Cyrus, The (Kevin) Bacon Brothers, Sheena Easton, Tower of Power, Vanessa Hudgens.....and Tinka, Elvis Night is still to come!
Bon'0 - I would love to go to Elvis night. I went to the P.N.E often when I was a teenager. My uncle would take me and a couple of friends each year. It was fun but nothing like our local Fair for atmosphere.
It is hard to get off and on the island by ferry these days. There are too many people and too few ferries. Some would like to see a bridge built like they have in P.E.I but most of us feel we would then become a suburb of Vancouver.

BEBBI: What great memories your blog brought back for me. I remember going to the AZ State Fair with my folks and my sister and brother every year. We would no sooner get in the gates..and we would have to run to get Fry Bread..just salt..no honey. It was our favorite fair food.
As I got older I would go to the Fair with my friends and we would meet our respective boyfriends there. I was still pretty innocent and it was just such a thrill to be walking around the Fair holding a boy's hand...and if he won you a purple and white teddy bear by throwing rings around bottles..well that was just a bonus. Sigh...those were the days.
I haven't been to the Fair in years..and I'm not really sure why. Maybe this would be a good year to go again.

Great blog today.. We don't have state fair's here in NJ. They have a fair at the Meadowlands (where the Jets and Giants Play) every year, however its not a state fair, I have been to that fair many years ago, I just was not impressed, it was like a street fair in a parking lot..

Bebbi, What a great blog. I felt like I was there. Oh wait, I was just there on Sunday. Well, at our State Fair anyway. It had all those things you mentioned, except the demolition derby.
We walked around for four hours and only got through three of the buildings and one pass down the midway.
The county building had an exhibit from each of the 58 counties in CA and I was a little disappointed because they were not as elaborate as in the past. I guess budgets are getting smaller everywhere.
The first time I ever went to a fair was when my Hubby took me to the Santa Barbara County fair three months before we were married. I was 17. My favorite thing was seeing all the mama animals with their babies.

I do want to say I was paid back many years later by my youngest son who just had to go on the hammer! He begged and I said ok lets go. Mr. Lynn D does not do rides at all!
I have to say it was great until the ride operator decided to give us an extra long trip backwards, because we were the only ones on the ride and there was no line. Let's just say it took about a half hour before I could walk and not feel like I was going to loose my scones all over the place!!!

Did anyone else come home EVERY year from the fair with goldfish, only to have them die a few days later?? We would toss the ping pong ball into the bowls and win the fish. My mother hated that part- because we always cried when our fish died.

Lynn D: I had really similar experiences with the Zipper at the "Ex" in Toronto! First time I went on it I was terrified! But I ventured on again when I was a little older, and LOVED it.
Mary/MI: The weather's looking pretty typical (which means pretty good) for this time of year. A heat wave is ramping up today, but should run its course by Friday. Then, its looking like highs around 91 degrees in Brentwood, and only high 60's at the coast (low 70's in San Francisco). So if you plan to visit any beaches, a jacket would be a good option.

Bebbi~ great blog~ I loved the fair when i was a kid. I even worked there for a couple of summers....i worked at the Old Fashioned Ice Cream stand~ Oh the fun....I was in charge of dipping the long ones (bananas) and the other girl dipped the dark or light ones (choc and vanilla ice cream)...my favorite was the long ones with the nuts! :)~ I miss the Orange County Fair. The Utah State Fair just doesn't cut it~

Hi everyone! All the descriptions of the fairs you guys have attended over the years sounds so much more fun than anything I ever went to.
Our Exhibition (as we call it) starts with the parade and it lasts from Tuesday until Saturday night. We have rides for the kids and games. There is musicals acts and a Queen pageant and a Little Miss Queen pageant. There are ox hauls and horse riding competitions, and of course plenty of food. They also have a talent night where some fool staggers in from the beer room and thinks he can sing. It's usually good for a laugh or two. Although I haven't been to the Ex for a few years now.
Oh Tina I'm still waiting for the twins. I have a long list of chores for them when they get here. Lol!

Whew, break time again. Gosh, it never occurred to be that some states might not have State or County Fairs. That's just WRONG!
Tina~~Why am I not surprised that you were in charge of "dipping the long ones"?
Does anyone else love the indoor 'slice, dice, chop, cook' gadget demos at the fair? The demonstrators usually have such personality and suck in the passing crowds for free samples. I've come SO close to buying a big honkin' juicer every year, but always manage to resist.
For all you glasses wearing people out there would you recommend bi-focals with a line or invisable?
Went to the eye doctor today and it looks like I need glasses. Surprise! Surprise! I think I'm going to go with the invisable line but I wanted your opinions first. Any advise? Thanks.
Shirley: I tried no-line bifocals and they made me sick. Seriously, my eyes could not adjust. I just went back to readers, and I just take them off and on as needed. My distance vision isn't that bad....yet.

The "Ex" (We always called it the CNE) is AWESOME! I have been a couple of times but not in recent years. My "In-laws" lived in Niagara Falls, NY and we used to go when we'd go up to visit. The best "fair" ever!
sacbarb: The Delaware County Fair in Muncie had the band contests and demolition derby. They don't have that at the Kentucky State Fair sorry for the confusion.

My newest glasses are Transitions (photobrown) gradiant invisiline bifocals. I love them. No 'dizzy lines', you'd never know they are 'bi', plus they automatically become sunglasses. Cost more initially, but don't need two different pairs or to do all the switching back and forth.
Hi Shirley, I have the invisible line bifocals and I like them a lot. They also turn darker when I go outside so I don't have to have sunglasses also. Good Luck.

Shirley I had to start wearing glasses for reading 2 years ago. Since I often read and watched TV at the same time, I decided to get bifocals so I wouldn't have to keep taking the glasses off and on. I got the invisible kind. It does take a couple of weeks to get used to them. At first, you really notice the scenery being wavy at your periferal (sp?) vision as you move your head. To avoid that, I would blink as I turned my head from side to side. Anyway, it will be weird at first but you do get used to it and don't notice it at all anymore.
Wow Mek: Garth Brooks and free beer!! I bet that was a time!! I love Garth Brooks..and my hubby lives for free beer!! hehe.

Oh Tink, you have to share with us the pics of the items and who wins the most blue ribbons! I wish I could enter something in the fair. I never seem to have the time, but someday I will. I entered "Kolaches" in the Czech Fest when my kids were small and we lived in Texas. I had to work the day of the fair but Mr. Bebbi called me at work and told me I WON FIRST PLACE!!! I got my picture in the paper and the Houston Oilers were the judges!! I was so proud. I still have the #1 Plaque on my wall in my kitchen. Someday I will enter into another one. :)
Bebbi - We always take pictures of the entries and ribbons. I will put them on ms. When our kids were little we never thought of entering anything. We would just walk around and compare all the winning items to things we had grown at home and always thought ours were better. They probably weren't as good but we had fun thinking that.
In our minds we imagined that we would have won many prizes but we never actually got the forms and filled them in.
My daughter's family somehow started right from the beginning of their marriage, entering every category they could find. There are longs lists of categories.
My grandson won his first, 1st ribbon when he was only 2.
I think he was the only entry for "paintings by children under 3." It wasn't much of a painting but we framed it nonetheless. Needless to say, now that he is 13 there is strict competition. Even at 12, he didn't win as many as he had in previous years.
I was thinking of entering my 'famous buns' but I think it would break my heart if they didn't win. After all they are famous. LOL.
Doug and Cara amaze me with the prizes they get for his vegetables and her jams, jellies and flower arrangements. It's always exciting to get there just after the judging to see what they won.
I would just like to thank Hartldo, Bebbi, Bonnie (got the email and will check the site out tomorrow ty), Sacbarb and JustLin for giving me their opinions on the glasses. I appreciate it. ((HUGS))

BEBBI - Great blog!! I love all fairs, but I think my favorite is the Wisconsin State Fair!!! We love going through all the animal barns, the rides, and our state fair is known for their Cream Puffs!! They are about the size of your head (not really)....and sooooooooo yummy!!! Of course there are many beer gardens and tons of free entertainment. About 20 years ago I did go to the Rock County Fair and saw a little know artist named Garth Brooks for free. We sat in the front row....be still my heart!!!

I was thinking about this blog today and wondered, why NJ does not have a state fair..
I found out today that Sussex NJ has our state fair:
New Jersey State Fair / Sussex County Farm and Horse Show
The area of Sussex is considered Northwestern NJ and it is in a rural area...It seems the NJ State Fair is the first couple of weeks of August. The rest of the time this area is Country Farm/Horse Farm...
Sussex is about 2hrs from me..
I also realized that within a hr from where I live, we have the Jersey Shore Boardwalks, many shore points have there own boardwalks, and on such, we have all the things you guys spoke about that are in a fair, the boardwalks just don't have animals. Alot of these boardwalks stay open most of year esp Atlantic City. So maybe that is why my area does not have a state fair. As we are all at the Boardwalk..

My sister couldn't adjust to the no line eye glasses. She ended up having to go back and get another pair. I Don't mind sticking my finger in my eye so I usually just put in my contact lens! :0)

Ok, I know this will shock you all but I won a ribbon on my cookies in about 3rd grade at a state fair..I was in 4H! Nobody ever believes me. I wish I knew where that darn ribbon was and I would hang it on the wall in my kitchen!
We have a large state fair in Pueblo in August. I used to go to it all the time and see great singers and displays and food. It is hard for me to walk that much anymore but it was fun when I did it.

I haven't found any new foods advertised at the convention. The news is busy showing all the shirts, sunglasses, etc., that are being sold there. It has been pretty quiet compared to what the city was concerned about regarding protesting, etc. My son is hanging out on the roof of a parking garage across the street from the Pepsi Center from 10AM to 10PM.

CAROL - That is why my dr. still says to never stick anything smaller than your elbow in your ear!!! I got a nasty case of "swimmer's ear" from overuse of a q-tip. I learned my lesson....was damn painful. And my youngest gets big time wax build up. You should see the candles the dr. pulls out of there......reminds me of Shrek!!!
