Judging a Book By its Cover
by Tinka
As I was quickly glancing through T.V. themes on UTube, I came across a show very few of us watched in 1980, called “Bosom Buddies”. What caught my eye was one of the stars. He was a 24 year old guy with black curly hair. He was cute but most girls at the time would hardly give him a second glance. He was no equivalent to our McDreamy. He did not appear to have an outstanding natural aptitude for acting. The show lasted two seasons.
Who was this young man? Well, he was Tom Hanks, who thirteen years later was the charismatic star of “Sleepless in Seattle”. In that same year he was the talented Academy Award winner for the movie "Philadelphia". The following year he won a second time for the movie "Forest Gump" (I994). And that was just the beginning of his great career.
My mind wandered back to my High School Days. (St. Ann's Academy was connected to the Catholic boys' school, St. Louis College.) I remember the "nerds" who the others did not hold in high regard. They were mostly ignored. It was the ‘sport jocks’ who got all the attention and the dates. I also remember my 20th and 40th school reunions with these two schools, where we were all very eager to find out what "everyone was doing now". To our amazement it was not the popular "hunks" who became successful. The shy, quiet, studious guys who were ignored by the "Prom Queens" turned out to be the "Stars of the Night". They were the ones who had made the greatest achievements. I don’t know the reason for this but I did pass my opinion on to my daughters. I don’t think they believed me at the time. Now they are going to their 20th school reunions and discovering the same thing. The "best" High School kids did not necessarily become the "best" adults.
Did you ever disregard any possible boyfriends because at the time you considered them to be "nerds", but actually had a great deal of potential? I think some of us did. I guess it’s the old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”.

First?
Wow! I got my first 69 yesterday and my first FIRST today! It's going to be a good week!
Tinka: GREAT blog! I, for one, DID watch Bosom Buddies when it was on. I kind of liked it. And I've ALWAYS liked Tom Hanks. Forrest Gump is one of my all-time faves!
As for your question regarding nerds. Well, I was one of them! I was a "band geek" and was actually proud of it! To my knowledge, I didn't have any boys who even wanted to date me until I was a Junior in high school, so I had no one to turn my nose up to. LOL! I had no one to turn down! I dated a nerd and hung out with nerds. I was so comfortable in my own clique that I didn't even care what anyone else thought of us. I mean, I guess I knew people thought we were nerds but none of us cared.
I've been to my 10th & 20th reunions. I had to miss my 25th because I attended my son's graduation from Navy Recruit Training. Like you, Tinka, I found that it is the "nerds" who have become the most successful. I knew that's the way it would be all along though. :)
Good morning Donna!
Good Morning Dreama! It looks like it's just you and me!
My Dad was a jock in High School. All of his brothers were football players. In Jr. High school I was a cheer leader on our Pep Squad team. I didn't date the jocks however. In fact I don't even remember the jocks even thanking us for supporting them at all of the games when we followed them by bus and spent hours shaking our pom poms and rooting them on.
In High School I had a lot of friends and we still all stay in touch except for Ron who passed away. The boys in HS were just my friends.I never dated any of them. They seemed a bit too immature for me so when I did date I went out with a few young military guys and after I turned 17. I was supposed to be 18 to date them by law but my Dad gave them firm lectures and there was no problems.I graduated HS at Kaiserslautern HS in Germany so have not attended any HS reunions. I'm sure that the boys who focused on sports would have also not have accomplished as much as the nerds. I guess my friends were the nerds. We enjoyed learning. Everyone seems to have done well with their lives and is happy. My Dad on the other hand has attended his HS reunions. He likes going back for them. My Dad joined the Air Force at 19 and when he retired he began a second government career and has done well for himself. One of his buddies from WVA went on to work for NASA in Houston. That's a pretty good leap from a tiny little town in the mountains of WVA.
Morning Glories!
Hart congrats on your first First!!
Tinka good blog. I watche bosom Buddies I used to love that show and remember when Tom hit it big in the movies. I remember saying hey that is the guy from Bosom Buddies!
I mostly dated the quiet guys too. I think they are all successful because they worked hard to get where they are, often times the jocks and popular crowd are so used to everything being handed to them that they are shocked when real life smacks them around a bit.
Good Morning Dreama and anyone else that flies in!
I've been up since 6AM. I figured I'd beat the heat of this hot summer and get my shopping done so I guess I am out of here.
I hope you had a great week end Donna.
Good morning to everyone who comes in the Nest.
Wake up sleepy birds or I'll get my big metal trash can lids and start banging them together. Boy, I haven't done that in awhile. Clang, clang, clang!
BTW,
I so love Tom Hanks!
Good morning LynnD.
I was trying to wake Tinkatia. My bad!
See ya guys later!
Good morning!
I have told this story, but I was a band geek and in high school I dated the band geeks.
However, I ended up marrying the captain of the football and baseball team. His date to the prom was the prom queen.
My date to the prom was the captain of the color guard in band.
Jocky hubby, turned into a nerd and that is how we fell in love.
I remembered watching Bosom buddies, I liked that show.
Hubby did say, if he had to do it over again in high school, he would have looked at everyone with different eyes.
Good morning iteach, dreama, lynn, and hartldo(Congrats on your FIRST 1st! lol)
Great blog Tinka! I admit, in high school, I was attracted to the hot guys, football player type, etc. lol
BUT the older I got, I really saw the potential in the nerds! LMAO
(It reminds me of the Will and Grace episode where Jack is hunting the HGN-hot gay nerd! ROFLMAO)
I hope you all have a great Monday!!
Carol, your QOTD is hilarious!!
Good Morning Lynn & iteach!
Dreama: What tiny WVA town did your dad come from? W Virginians are our neighbors. We even watch the WV news here in our small So. Ohio town.
Hiya Joey! You & I were posting at the same time.
kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigjv....that 's the message from the cat whose house I am staying at (and oh yes, it is definitely her house!!!) who just put her paws on the key board. If anyone speaks cat, could you let me know what that says!
I have a wireless connection this morning, so yippee...I can say good morning Owls! Have a great, wonderful, yellow, marvelous Monday!
Thanks for all your well wishes yesterday...much appreciated. So far my trip across the Pacific River has been great!
Tinka...my good neighbour! What fantastic blogs you write! Bosom Buddies was a fun show and this is a great subject. Tom Hanks was a star from the beginning. Does anyone remember him on Family Ties...I think he was Uncle Ned? So high school nerds that have done well...Bill Gates, Bill Gates, Bill Gates!!!!
I would love to write more, but have to get ready to teach today! Maybe I will have a wireless connection at the school! Have a great day all!
Vig: I have no idea what that means, so I asked my cat Jaspurr. He is going to type now:
lkmm.k
Okay, that's all he would type. Then he jumped out of my arms and is looking at me like I'm nuts. Well, I guess I am for making a cat type. But that cat where you're staying, Vig, started it!!! :)
I do remember Tom Hanks on Family Ties, now that you mention it.
Good Morning Hartldo. Congrats on being first.
Good Morning Dreama, Donna, Lynn, Iteach, Joey and my good friend and neighbour VIG. I hope I didn't miss anyone. I scrolled twice. Hope you are having a great day.

Thanks for commenting on my blog. I loved "Bosom Buddies". I think I watched every show. Tom was playing very much the nerd and had not yet really been discovered. That's why I chose that clip. I often think of this topic when I see Bill Gates. I wonder how many girls in his high school wish they had perhaps been nicer to him. I am only guessing but I bet there were quite a few. The same theme runs through the movie "Romy and Michelle's
Highschool Reunion". The class nerd who everyone treats poorly gets to be voted most successful at his 20th reunion. He arrives in his own helicopter. Apparently he has invented some special glue for sneakers and is now a billionaire. It's a silly little movie but it makes its point.
VIG - I am going to miss you. I hope you can get internet while you are away.
To all of you who have asked about Amicus, she wrote me last night. She has been away on holidays. She will check in later today.

It's my blog so I guess I can grab "25". I am off to myspace. See you all later.
Good Morning Owls!
I've been on vacation and just got home last night so I haven't had time to catch up on blogs or comments. I have a busy schedule at work this week to make up for taking time off, but I wanted to pop in for a quick Hello.
Thank you to everyone who left messages on MySpace!
Cpgem: Happy Belated Birthday!!!
Tinka: I used to occasionally watch "Bosom Buddies" and at the time, would have never guessed Tom Hanks would go on to become the mega star he is now.
Waving HI to everyone!
Hope you all have a great day!
Good morning!
Congrats to Donna today for being first!
VIG, glad you checked in! When Paula wakes up, I will have her type a message back. She will be happy to "help"!! :)
Pinka, great blog this morning! I remember 1 guy who a close friend had set me up with, I was a junior in high school.
He was an older guy (19 or 20, named Larry)with a nice car, and he would wait for me at school, called all the time, he really annoyed me.
I totally ignored him and as we all know, that is what makes them want you more!
Anyway, he finally got the message and backed off. My friend who had set us up told me he was upset that I didn't like him.
Years later, I was at a party, and there was Larry. He was AMAZINGLY gorgeous, I couldn't believe it was the same guy who had gotten on my nerves so bad.
I said hi to him and was hoping we could spend time talking, he totally blew me off.
We ran into each other again, and he told me how he had wanted to call me after we'd seen each other at the party, but his pride wouldn't let him.
Oh well!
My niece is still here so we will do more swimming and sunning today.
Yesterday we were trying to do all the strokes that they Olympians do, it was so funny. The free style and breast stroke are pretty easy, back stroke is hard, and we couldn't even figure out how to do the butterfly!
We can't figure out why the dog paddle isn't included in the Olympic program?? HAHA!!!
We had lots of laughs and got lots of exercise!
Hope everyone has a nice Monday!
Good morning Tinka! I remember that movie, "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion." Romy lied and said she invented Post-It Notes. LOL! I think if you feel like you need to lie at your reunion, you really should just stay at home.
Hi Amicus! I'm an Owl now! :)
And the Gold Medal for doggie paddling goes to ... EBJ!
I'm going to hand out another medal later. Just wait!
Just a little something I thought you might find interesting. Donna Dixon, from "Bosom Buddies", is married to Dan Aykroyd. At least I think they're still married. And if Telma Hopkins looks familiar to you, she was one of the background singers in "Tony Orlando and Dawn".
Happy Monday!!
Good Morning!!
hart - congrats on your first FIRST!! (and your first 69 -LOL)
Tinka - great blog - at my ten year reunion - all the jocks had construction jobs and all the "nerds" were extremely successful in the business world -
EBJ - yes, why isn't the dog paddle an olympic event!!
HOW about that men's relay team last night - AMAZING!!!!
waving good morning to all.....
I hope everyone has an excellent day!!
:-)
Amicus - Good Morning. You have no idea how happy I am seeing you post this morning. The mother in me was starting to get worried. I hope you had a good vacation. You deserved it.
Good Morning East Bay J - There were a few guys in high school that I wish I had been nicer to. There was one boy who everyone considered that word (I really don't like using it). He never had any girl friends. He blossomed after High School. I met him at University and he was surrounded by girls. He was so attractive I wasn't sure it was him. He too paid little attention to me. Why should he? He now could pick and choose. My loss.
Donna - I didn't know Donna Dixon was married to Dan Aykroyd. Thanks for the info. I did know Telma was part of "Tony and Dawn". She was also in a couple of other sit-coms. I will think about that and get back to you. Or someone else might remember first. I am off to have breakfast and watch Regis. I will be back to read comments. I am sure enjoying them so far. Thanks for that.
Another great blog Tinka!
Congrats on 1st Hartldo!
Good morning/afternoon Dreama, Lynn D, Iteach, Joey, VIG, Amicus (welcome back), EBJ and Mek.
I have no nerdy want-to-b boyfriend story and I have never been to a school reunion. I don't think we have had any. At least no one told me. Hmmmmm.
Shirley, I started school when I was 5 years old in Halifax. I was there 3 months. What school did you go to? Nova Scotia is a big province so it's unlikely to be the same school but one never knows.
35
I am watching "Regis and Kelly" and he has on someone who is in a movie of a highschool boy who plays the bassoon in the band. He is just saying bassoon playing band members never get the girl.
I forgot to say Good Morning Mek, Good Morning Shirley.
Donna - I loved "Romy and Michelle's Reunion". That clique that didn't like any nerds and then never reached their expectations was a riot.
I've only been to a couple high school reunions. I always hung out with older people, so didn't have many friends who were classmates, and none that I keep in touch with now.
I do remember that one of the nerdiest, unpopular girls became a pediatrician.
My parents still live in the town where I went to school, so my mom will let me know now and then who she runs into and gives me updates.
VIG, Paula is still sleeping, so haven't been able to have her type you a response yet! :)
Tinka: great blog! I love Tom Hanks. I think he is one of the best actors ever. I used to watch Bosom Buddies, too. I guess it's a lesson we all learn in middle/high school. We try so hard to fit in and be cool that we often miss out on the really cool people. I'm watching my daughter go through that now and trying my best to counsel her on being kind to everyone!!
The other day I was looking at her myspace and she had answered one of those surveys on a bulletin and one of the questions was, "who is the second name under P in your phone's address book?" and she had written some name and wrote "loser" after it. I was so mad at her! I asked her what she was doing with a "loser's" number since she's soooo cool. Then, I gave her one of my famous lectures, of course. LOL
Donna: congrats on first!!
Dreama: good luck on your early start today--good for you!
Lynn: is it quiet in your neighborhood yet??
iteach: aww, your hubby sounds like a sweetie.
Joey: you just make me laugh!
VIG: I think the cat said you are the best cat sitter ever!!
EBJ: I can't wait to hear what Paula has to say when she wakes up!
Amicus!! So happy to see you. I was getting worried, too. I hope you had a wonderful vacation.
MEK: happy Monday to you, too!
Shirley: big hugs to you!
It's quiet at my house today. The kids are in school. :)
Good Morning Sandie - I can tell you have an empty house today. You had time to talk to every one who posted. I like it when I have time to do that too but as you well know some days it's impossible. I think I have every one of Tom Hanks' videos. Of course now they are obsolete so I need to start a DVD collection of his works. I think "You've Got Mail" and "Sleepless in Seattle" are my favourites. I do have them in DVD. I think I watched the videos so often they almost wore out. I love the scene in "Sleepless" where Tom's real wife Rita describes a scene in "An Affair to Remember". It's so great. I love the fact that Tom and Rita have been married so many years. It's rare in Hollywood.
Sandie - I remember having those talks with my girls too. I think that problem is universal. They don't want to be seen with the "wrong boys" or it affects their own popularity. It's nice when your kids get old enough to go to their own school reunion and they find out you were right all the time. The trouble is by the time you get to that point you are as old as I am. That part is not so great.
Tinka, you're right, I have more time today -- and, I don't think I've moved much since they left! LOL
I love the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movies!! I think "You've Got Mail" is my favorite--"don't cry shopgirl"--love it!
Sandie - I have watched that movie so many times and still love it. I especially love when spring comes and he tries to court her. In the last scene when "Over the Rainbow" starts in the background and she sees him. Oh my I must go watch him say "Don't cry shopgirl" one more time.

Way to go Hart! First #1 today and first #69 yesterday! You really are on a roll. Congrats!
Tinka Great blog! I really enjoyed "Bossom Buddies" and was glad to see Tom Hanks make it onto the big screen. He comes across as such a nice guy.
Today's topic is an interesting one, to be sure.
There were lots of different cliques at my high school. I was friendly with a lot of different groups and just saw them as groups with different interests. The majority of the star jocks and pep squad people also got very good grades. I was part of the pep squad, however, I took as much math as possible and had a great time in trig and calculus classes with some guys that would be considered nerds these days. The football team voted me to be one of their homecoming princesses and the all male Key Club (more nerdy, business oriented types) voted me to be an honorary member and secretary. I took all five art classes that were available so I was friendly with the artsy crowd. The surfer culture was taking off at that time and I was friendly with a number of them, also. I don't mean for this to sound like it's all about me. I just mean that I never judged these other kids based on their interests. There were a few kids that were completely socially inept and I really don't know if that ever improved for them.
EBJ- I loved your story!
Amicus great to see you back!
Sandie enjoy your quiet day.
Just_Lin, sounds like you were a well-rounded young lady.
Hi iteach! Thank you!
Oh Tinka, I'm excited for the day when my kids realize I was right--about everything! LOL
Custard was guilty of judging a book by its cover when it came to me. He was a baseball player in school (played in the minors for a while) and got a degree in economics. When it came to me, he was afraid I would never go out with him. That he wasn't on the same "level" as me (his word). He has admitted to calling my house when we were teenagers, then losing his nerve when I answered and hanging up. What a silly boy. I sure am glad he gained confidence with his maturity!
50 :)
Iteach - The problem is they also discovered I was wrong about a few things. They let me know that too. I was guilty of being over protective and of being such a worrier. My daughter was in band and in gymnastics. They travelled a lot. I found out there was very little supervision on out of town field trips when a group of boys knocked on the girls' door saying they were the "Police". I won't go into details but it was a close call for those girls, my daughter being one of them.
One of my regrets was not allowing her to go to Disneyland on a band trip in grade 9. I thought she had 3 more years to go that far from home. As it turned out they all got to see David Hasselhoff while they were there. That was my daughter's great love at the time. I didn't think she would ever forgive me for that one. We did take the kids later to Disneyland but we never saw David. And the band never went to Disneyland in the next three years.
The second regret I have is not allowing my kids to go on school skiing trips to Mt. Washington. We had two bus accidents on two different years killing quite a few beautiful teenagers. This happened just before mine were wanting to go. We promised to take them skiing but never did get to it. The result was my children never learned to ski when they were young. Another sin I am doing penance for. So Iteach my dear, we do our best and we are right most of the time but sadly, not always. By the way I just love your kids. If you ever need respite, I am here.
Just_Lin - Isn't it wonderful you finally got together? That was positively serendipitous. If you had gone out back in High School you may not have "clicked" the same way you have now because now you are both mature and see the greatness in each other. You might have missed that back when you were so very young.
Brian has arrived to fix my broken fence. We had quite a wind the other night. I will be back this afternoon.
Have a great day everyone.
Tinka You are so right. Custard often mourns the fact that we have lost so many years but there is no guarantee that things would have worked for us if we would have gotten together way back then. All we have is the here and now and I am certainly grateful for that.
Your daughter still has a great life even without David Hasselhoff. She probably doesn't give him a second thought now.
Sandie I went to school in the same town from 1st through 12th grades. I really feel like I benefited alot from knowing and socializing with different groups of people. They were all great in their own ways. I did have my own core group of best friends but that never limited my interaction with other kids and groups as well.
Donna,
My Dad grew up in Boone County. My grandma still lives there. I was born there.Scrappysmom and Marr in Ohio are also from WVA. Marr really has that WVA accent. The moment I heard Marr speak then I asked her if she was from WVA. She said yes.I knew it. LOL I love listening to her talk. She makes me think of home and my Aunts voices.
Amicus
So good to hear from you. I was worried that you had left us :(
Sandie
You are such a good Mom. You seem so on top of things. That is good that you had that talk with your daughter.
Well, I just got back home and I am hungry. Hmmm..
I wish you all lived near by so we could go out for lunch.
Cya guys laterz! ( I read that on teen Myspace. LOL)
Good afternoon and Happy Monday Owls. I have just returned from a card making class and I can say that my talents in the card making area are sorely lacking. Maybe I just need more classes.
Tinka, I loved your blog today. I watched Bosom Buddies all the time and was very sad when it was cancelled. Tom Hanks went to Sacramento State University (my alma mater) and was also involved in the local theater where I usher. However that was all before I was involved in it. **sigh**
Donna_no_longer_a_first_virgin_Hart, Congrats to you.
Iteach, What a sweet story about you and your Hubby.
MEK, Thanks for telling me to stay up for the men's relay. It was truly AMAZING.
Just_Lin, Everything happens for a reason. Good for Custard finally getting up the confidence to call you.
Tinka, I am still jealous that you have a David and now a Brian too.
LynnD, From yesterday: I saw Swing Vote too and I was surprised that I liked it. I didn't want to see it, but it was my friend's turn to chose. It has a powerful message and I loved the role of the daughter.
Hugs to everyone who has posted so far and to all who will post after me.
60 just for grins
Good Afternoon Every--body!!
TINKA: Oh dear..does this blog hit home. My best friend and I took an A/V course our Junior year in high school. We were both on the newspaper staff and figured this would be a good compliment. Awwwww...who am I kidding..it looked easy and fun! We met a great group of people in that class and soon we were going to football games together and then out for pizza. We all became very close.
In that group there was one boy..tall, dark hair..blue eyes..and a complete computer nerd. We dated briefly..but all he seemed to talk about was computers. He kept asking me to take the Beginning Computer class with him. Hell no...I was bored silly!! Most people thought he was a total geek, but he really was very funny and sweet.
Flash forward...he has turned out to be one of the biggest innovators in computer animation AND he owns his own animation studio!! HUH?? I asked LOVEY if she had ever heard of him...and she was surprised I knew him..cuz she has studied his courses!! Damn...if nothing else, just a few more dates and I would know how to use this frig-fraggin machine!! ;)
Just one more thing..although we fell out of contact during college (because he moved to this silly little Silicon Valley place)..we have since reconnected. He is still as funny as he always was...and now the computer talk isn't quite as boring!! Maybe I'll learn something yet!
What a wonderful blog TINK..thank you!!
Hey Zona, What's shakin? (a little roof humor) Bwaahaahaa
TINKA: I have never seen "Bosom Buddies". It was on during my wilder days...when I didn't watch much TV. :D
HART: Congrats on FIRST!!
LYNND: I think your post was exactly right.
ITEACH: My dad was a jock in high school and college. When mom told us, we laughed our asses off...he so wasn't like that anymore. We needed to see the pictures before we believed her!
VIG: Ruuff! Sorry, no catspeak here! ;)
EBJ: Personally I think they should include the dog paddle..and what about the bellyflop in diving?? I know I'd watch those events! LOL! OH..and I'd LOVE to see what POE would write in addition to PAULA!!! :)
AMICUS: Good to see you're back..and yer front!! **sorry** ;)
SANDIE: You know, you will be right, and they will know it...someday.
J/LIN: I wasn't in all the clubs and groups you were, but being on the newspaper staff gave me glimpses into all these different groups. I got along with just about everyone..and that made high school so much easier for me. Oh wait..there was one girl who wanted to kick my butt...but a cheerleader saved me. LOL
SACBARB: You will be a wonderful card maker...BELIEVE!! :)
Waving HI to MEK, SHIRLEY and JOEY!!!
Off to make lunch for Mr Z...or is it dinner...breakfast...I get so confused! Have a great day all!!
SACBARB: We haven't raised the roof yet today...;)
JODI: THANK YOU!
TINA: I hope all went well at your dad's appointment and that you are safely home, or having a smooth flight back right now.
Good Afternoon - I feel really rested and I think we may swing by Butchart's again. We have yearly passes so we try to use them. They have the best Hot Dog stand there. Now I only eat Hot Dogs once in a while but out there I can't resist them.
SacBarb - Yes I am lucky to have Dave and Brian. They grew up together and are life long friends. They are both divorced. Dave has 2 kids just out of their teens. Brian has none. They are both so good to me. I think when God closes one door, he opens another.
No Tinka I never lived in Halifax. I have lived and gone to school here in Shelburne. It's about 2 hours away from Halifax and about an hour away from Yarmouth.
My stomach isn't feeling well today so I don't know if I'll be back later or not. Have a good evening everyone.

That was for KGRL!!! SWAK!
Zonababy - So good to see you come aboard since I left. If prizes were given out for who lost out on the richest and most valuable nerd, it would be you. I think I know the name of the man you mean. He is famous. He would have been a great techie to have in our nest. The trouble is then we wouldn't have Mr. Z and I wouldn't change that for anything and I know you wouldn't either. Have a great day. How hot is it there?
I feel like marching before I leave. Anyone up to it?

Nobody is playing with me so I think I will take my ball and go home.
Bear - I am waiting to hear about your high school days. I know they will be interesting. Are you laying out in the sun?

I am gone. See you all later.
Hi again!
Zona, Poe is in a pissy mood today so whatever he types would probably be a 4 letter word! haha!
My niece went to feed him a honey nut Cheerios, and he grabbed it from her hand and threw it down.
I agree, belly flop and dog paddle should be included in the Olympics! And the cannon ball dive!
How the heck does one do the butterfly? I think it should be called the butterball, cause that is probably a better description of what I was trying to do!
OK, cute story break.
I took my niece out for lunch today, to a Mexican restaurant, and we were seated near the patio door (too hot to sit outside so we sat inside).
We saw a little fat squirrel come up to the glass door and look in. One of the waiters came over with a handfull of chips and threw them out onto the patio.
The little fat boy squirrle ran over and grabbed a chip, then went and layed down under a table and proceded to eat.
We were cracking up, cause he was so fat that he had to lay down to eat! His little tummy was bulging out on both sides.
(It could be a pregnant female too but we just assumed it was a fat male LOL).
He kept running back and taking the chips til they were all gone. I didn't know they did this, but the little guy stored all the chips in his cheeks, so when he was done, we saw him with his fat tummy and fat cheeks.
It was a priceless Kodak moment and I wished I'd had my camera.
The waiter told us that he (squirrel) comes for lunch every day at the same time. He waits at the door til he is "served".
Waiter said he is a good customer, never complains about the food but does not pay his bill! hahaha!!!
Apparently this one comes at 12:30 each day, and there is another who comes to eat at 2:00.
It had to be one of the cutest things I've seen.
I will check back a little later!
EBJ That is such a cute squirrel story! I have a black squirrel that's been coming to raid my bird feeders. When he sees me he runs away, though. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a black squirrel until this guy showed up.
Zona, I enjoyed your story . . . I think you're right where you're supposed to be! Mr. Z sounds fab!
Dreama, thanks, that's such a sweet thing to say. I try my best, as all moms do.
EBJ, I loved your squirrel story!
Good Evening Everyone! I took my daughter back to the eye doc today. She's finally getting the hang of those contacts! Yay!
We then went to a friend's house to watch a movie. Then dinner. Now I'm home doing laundry.
I got in touch with a professional cleaning company to come work on my flooded basement. A guy is coming tomorrow to give us an estimate. Mr. Hart doesn't want to pay someone but he also hasn't gotten very far by trying to do it himself. WE haven't gotten very far.
He was scraping the glue off the floor (once the wet carpet was removed) and hurt his already injured shoulder. I only tell you all this because we really need some help with this mess and I'd like you all to cross your fingers that the professionals are not going to cost us an arm and a leg. What I really need is Ty Pennington and Crew to show up here, but that's not going to happen.
Well, back to the laundry. I'll check in later.
Hart Good luck with your estimate. Sometimes it's worth it to get outside help. They've got the right expertise and equipment, etc. It's alot easier for them to do it than the Mr. I hope his shoulder feels better soon.
Thanks Just_Lin! Will you come tell my hubby that? ;)
Dreama: Marr lives right across the bridge from WV, and I'm just an hour's drive from Marr. On a good day, I can make it there even quicker.
Good luck, Donna! I hope the estimate doesn't cost an arm and a leg and they can get it done quickly! That would be a load off your mind, I'm sure.
My daughter got contacts last summer when she was 11 and she does great with them. It just takes a little learning curve.
Thanks Sandie!
My daughter is 10 and I thought she was a little young for contacts but they will really help her in this play she's in. The part she's playing is actually going to be played by 3 girls...over time. The other 2 girls don't wear glasses and my daughter simply can't see w/o them. That's the only reason we agreed to try them, but she's really doing well!
Good Evening Everyone.
I just heard on the news that Northern California has two of the top three cities that watched the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics...SACRAMENTO, San Francisco and West Palm Beach. How about that!!!!
I hope everyone had a good Monday.
Donna Hart, I have everything X'd for your estimate.
Hart:
Congrats on First!
Amicus:
Good to see ya :O)
Tinka:
Great blog, I was with the "in" crowd, well at least I thought they were, and totally ignored the nerds. I got in some trouble in high school, and have chosen to not stay in contact with anyone, so I don't really know how all turned out...I have heard some rumors, again, Just not my thing!
I loved what you said about Bill Gates tho, as you are so right, I bet those cheerleaders that were in his class have lots of regrets
:O)
I never watched Bosom Buddies, but
I do remember Tom Hanks being on it, and look how his career turned out!!!
Goodnight all! Off to read and go to bed early. We survived the first day of school and I did all my homework (fill out paperwork!).
Iteach:
I so enjoyed your "Love Story" thanks for sharing!

Sandie:
Good Nite, glad all went well
Tina:
Hoping all went well with your father, keep us posted...
QOTD, yes it was quite funny, the sad part is I meant every word :O)
I have enjoyed reading everyone's comments today!!
Tina - I hope you had safe travels today!!
I went to town for errands - got home and my glasses are in - SO, have to go back tomorrow -
I am trying a new groomer for Bailey tomorrow also - crossing fingers that all goes well - i sure am NOT taking her back to the other place.
OH - and really good to see Amicus back with us!!
SacBarb - aren't you glad you stayed up last night - what an AMAZING race!!
we'll be watching Olympics again tonight -
It was such a beautiful day we took the dogs out to Butchart's again. It is a lovely two hour walk to stroll through the gardens. Tango and Tia love the attention they get especially when Tango ends up in her stroller. That is the best money I ever spent.
I will have a little rest and come back later to read the comments.
Tinka - loved your pictures of the garden - i can understand why you love to go walking there...

Shirley:
I hope you feel better!
Mek - I stepped on you again. I really am not that mean. The flowers seem different each day we go. It's amazing the job the gardeners do out there.
I am going to watch some of the Olympics, I will be back...
:O)
Good evening feathered friends!
TINKA...great blog! Tom Hanks is an incredible actor and so versatile. He and Meg Ryan are so great together.
In school, I had friends that were geeks, hippies, grease monkeys and everything in between! I think I was a composite of all of them (minus the drugs!!)It's funny that at my reunions, the geeks became so handsome and the jocks and hubba-hubba boys were now tubba-tubba baldies!
HARTLDO...congrats on 1st! I am glad your daughter is getting more accustomed to her contacts.
SANDIE...what a beautiful, strong and respectful relationship you have with your kids! They are lucky to have such a great mom.
SHIRLEY...sorry your tummy hurts. Feel better soon.
AMICUS...what a relief to see you again. I was getting very worried. Next time you go on vacation young lady...tell us first!!!
Tomorrow night I pick up a friend that is visiting from california. I haven't seen him in a few years and it will be fun to catch up. He is arriving with his second son and and the rest of his family will join him late next week. I am looking forward to spending the evening with them and his parents.
OMG...a spider just came down on a web right in front of me!! By the time I grabbed a tissue to kill it, I can't find the sucker!! GGrrr!!
JUST LIN...I meant to tell you what a special love story between you and Custard. It warms my heart when I read about it. I am looking forward to your next rendevous! Just not EVERY detail!! bwahahaha
MO - little miss muffet...
I sure hope you find that little sucker soon!!!
okay - I'm going to watch the olympics...
bbl!!!
Thanks for x-ing everything sacbarb!
Sandie: I know what you mean. The paperwork when school first starts is ridiculous!
I'm off to watch The Mole! It's the finale!!!!
Hey Hart, congrats on first!
Tink: Great blog, very true about not judging by someone's "cover". :)
I have had a busy day, so I just flew in to say hello to everyone and I hope you all had a wonderful day!! I walked 9440 steps today and I am so proud because I have been having knee trouble and this is the first time since mid-June that I made my goal of 7,000!!! AND, I beat it by 2000!! woot woot!
Going to go and lie down now though, so I can get some rest and be ready for work early in the a.m. Take care all. :)
Hugs Bebbi
From Area 51: Thanks Linda! ;)
Back in the mid seventies, I had a friend that was attending MIT. He had an interview with a geeky guy for a job at his start up company. My friend, Steve, turned down the job because he didn't have a good feeling. Fast forward...the geeky guy was Bill Gates!! Who's the nerd in that picture...Steve!! Steve has done ok...he is a math professor and in the summers works for NASA!
Maureen Thanks for your comment about Custard and I.
To be honest, I don't care how wealthy Bill Gates is, I still wouldn't find him attractive.
Bebbi Your welcome. :)
Mo, LOL @ tubba-tubba-baldies. At my 30th reunion, my Hubby was worried because he put on weight since high School. He graduated the year before me, but he knew all the kids in my class too. When we left, he said "At least I still have all my hair." Most of the jocks didn't. He didn't feel so bad.
Yay Bebbi! Keep on walkin'!
Oh Mo! What a story about your friend Steve! But if he had a bad feeling about it .... Well, I always say to trust your gut.
Sacbarb - I would love to see your cards. I bet they are a lot better than you think they are.
Zona-my-baby - You have yet to tell me about your wilder days. Are you keeping secrets from your mommy? Mommy doesn't like that. She is also glad you gave the 69 to K-Girl.

Shirley - Thank you for answering my question about what school you attended. I have never been to Shelburne but I have spent a lot of time in Yarmouth as a child. Someday I would like to make a trip back to Nova Scotia. Ron and I had plans to do that but he died before we achieved them. Now I have to persuade VIG to come with me. I no longer like to travel alone. I think I am directionally challenged and I may get lost.
E.B.J. - I loved your squirrel story.
Just_Lin - We used to have the cutest little brown squirrels here. Then the grey squirrels took over and it's impossible to find a brown one. Now the black ones have invaded. What's up with this? I miss my little brown squirrels. They were so tiny and sweet.
Donna - It's great that you can get your daughter to wear contacts. They aren't easy to learn how to use and are very easy to lose. My son wore them for a while but he lost so many he went back to glasses. I think it's different now, however. They used to be expensive but aren't they disposable now?
I think you are wise to get a professional cleaner. My daughter and son-in-law had a leak in their plumbing line. All the front yard had to be ripped up. My SIL was going to do it himself with help from his brothers. They decided on a professional team. It cost $4000 but it was done in a day. They put everything back in place. You wouldn't know there had been a problem. I know it would have taken a week for the family to do it and sure as anything someone would have hurt his back. Sometimes it's better to just swallow hard and write the cheque.
Maureen - I loved your Bill Gates story. He was the one who inspired my blog.
Carol - I bet you turned out best in your whole class. I just have a feeling about that.
Bebbi - Congratulations on walking so far today. Let us know how you feel tomorrow.
Thank you every owl who commented on my blog today. I really appreciate it. I don't find it easy to put myself out there at the top of the morning. It makes me feel very vulnerable and uncomfortable. I am always glad when my 'blog' day is over. You guys have been great. I am off to bed. May God keep us all safe tonight. Love, Tinka
135 and Good Night
Tinka: Yes, her contacts are disposable. She uses them for 30 days and then throws them away. They really aren't expensive at all. They're soft and she's torn one in two once. They say that is very common. Other than that, she's had no problems with them, and she's been very responsible. I'm very proud of her!
And Goodnight from here too!
I am watching the Olympics, and may I say they are fantastic tonite...
I am off to bed to watch the rest..
Tinka:
You are such a sweet blog host, I am hoping in the future (whenever you feel comfy) for another "Tinka blog day" It was fun reading everyone's stories that all came from you blog. Thank You!
Night everyone, have a good tomorrow...
:O)
Are you guys watching the Men's Gymnastics? OMG...exciting stuff!!
Goodnight TINK, HARTLDO and CAROL
Well, I wasn't watching until you mentioned it Mo. You're right! Amazing! Now I can't go to bed!
cpgem and MO - the gymnastics JUST started here - and YES, I'm watching..
nite, Tinka and Donna and cpgem. and anyone else headed to bed...
we were watching a baseball game earlier and it scrolled all the results from swimming - which has NOT started here yet - BUT, I'm still going to watch!!!
GO USA!!!
i needed a new avatar!!
Tink: Sorry for the late post! I read your blog this morning, but had an 8 AM telecom to attend, and had to drive down from the city to make it. Thus, no time this morning to comment!
But your blog really brought back memories of my high school days! As you might imagine, they weren't exactly mainstream. With the requisite horror and dismay, I discovered that I was gay when I was 14 or so, right after poverty. That meant a full four years of high school carrying "the secret", and having essentially little intrinsic interest in male-female interactions and mating rituals.
And, I went to an all-boys school, which meant that at least inside the school, there weren't any neat equivalents of the "in crowd" girls and boys. Our classes were so small (30 or so) that there weren't really well defined nerd groups. We were virtually all college-bound.
There was a jock crowd, though, the ones who were on the team sports like hockey and basketball. I NEVER liked team sports (I was a racquet sport fanatic... badminton an tennis and the like), so I wasn't a core memember of that group. But we all got to be pretty comfortable hanging out with each other, especially in our final year, when the whole class would party together.
I wasn't much into my classmates, lust-wise, either. I wanted to have sex with some of my teachers! I have a vivid memory of one of them who would sit in his office, which was right beside the gym, after being involved in some athletic coaching thing, totally naked before he went to the showers (remember, this was an all-male environment). His office had a window into the gym, and I would always position my badminton game to be on the court beside the window, so I could peek! LOL!
Once a bear lover, always a bear lover, I guess!
Kewl! Out here on the Left Coast, the men's gymnastics final is about to begin, and Phelps is up in 20 minutes.
MEK, Carol, I LOVE the Olympics too! :)
Whabbear, I got foaded.
I will start again.
I have been in bed talking to Zona. I just thought I would check the blog to see if you had written anything. I knew you wouldn't let me down. I so admire your honesty. It must not have been easy in your teen years keeping a secret. Isn't it great how things turned out? Now you are even planning a wedding. I wish I could be there. Love you Bear!
Whabbear- It took me three tries but I finally made it.

Thanks, Tink! Maybe "growing up gay" would make a good blog topic!!
Hart: Congrats on getting your first "69" yesterday! I guess congrats are in order for Mr Hart, too!
I get so irritated at these people who interview the winners after a competition. They ask the most inane questions, like "how were you able to pull ahead of..." I want to hear someone say "I worked my arse off, you idiot"
LOL@SacBarb! I feel the same way about tennis interviews! They ALWAYS ask exactly the SAME questions, and the players always have the SAME answers! Irritating!
Whabby, Why can't they just say 'congratulations' and 'we were all rooting for you' or something like that and let it go? They do it for golf, too.
OMG - you 'left coasters' - you must stay up for the end!!! -
Never give up!!!
USA USA USA USA USA USA..
I need to hit the hay!!
I hope everyone has an excellent Tuesday!!
:-)
OMG - Whabby and SacBarb - if you think some of the other interviews have been bad - wait for another hour!! I think this one took the cake!!!
okay - I'm off to bed...
Hello Everyone!!
Tink, Great blog. I used to watch that show too.
I scanned through the comment's while having my coffee.
It is interesting how the jock's and the geek's have changed place's. Same with the one's I went to school with. Jock's..bald and having a belly, geek's looking pretty darn good!
I guess you could say, my first hubby was a good looking jock type and prooved to be a jerk. Second hubby more of a geek and still around after 28yrs. Prolly cos the jock's seem to have too big of a ego. Just MHO.
I think the last reunion I went to was our 20th. I have no desire to go to any more.
