Beginning with Books

Books. I love finding that book that has to be read to the very end as soon as it is begun. What a treasure a good book truly is. I have always loved a great story. For as long as I can remember, books have been a big part of my life. My mom read at bedtime – she loved to read Black Beauty, Little Women, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses. My brothers read to me when I couldn’t read yet. We were limited to one hour of television a day and were encouraged to read instead of watching t.v. I remember Clifford the Big Red Dog and all of Dr. Seuss’s books as being much loved. The Bobbsey Twins was the first series I became obsessed with. Then all of the Little House on the Prairie books, soon followed by all of the Anne of Green Gables books. All my friends loved Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, but I never did.
I can see patterns in what I liked then having crossed over to what I like now. I am not big on mysteries or fantasy but love stories about people and relationships. We have talked a lot here on the blog about books we have loved as adults, but what did you love to read as a child? What were your favourites? Are they the same genre of books that you enjoy now? If you have children, did you share the books that you loved as a child with them?
I remember when Dr. Seuss died. Jesse Jackson paid tribute to him on Saturday Night Live by reading a favourite!

VIG that was a cute clip. I loved reading "Green Eggs and Ham" to my friends kids. I couldn't do a lot of physical activities with the kids so we enjoyed reading book.
I also loved the "Anne Of Green Gables" series. My mum , older sister and I read the "Trixie Beldon" series of book. I have read some of the "Nancy Drew" & "Hardy Boys" books as well. In the 80's I read a ton of "Star Trek " books. There is nothing better than getting involved in a good book. Thanks for a great blog topic VIG!

I love to read and as a kid I was a fan of the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys series. I also loved any book that had animals in it. The Jungle Book, Treasure Island, Swiss Family Robinson, Dr. Doolittle were all big hits. And of course there was Dr. Suess.
As an adult I gravitate towards biographys, autobiographys, mystery and a good old fashioned love story and humorous type stories. Not Sci-fi or anything too dark.
Hope you all have a wonderful day and weekend. Heading over to SIL's in Racine for dinner tonight and then to Illinois tomorrow for a birthday party for great-niece and a BIL, then dinner with friends. Back on Sunday to go to the Good neighbor festival in the town just a few blocks from my house.
It all gets to be crazy busy in the summer, but I hate winter and sitting around- so not going to complain too much!

Ahhh Vig one of my favorite topics, books.
Books have been my best friend since I was a child. The are my solace and retreat. They are always there through good times and bad. You can guess what is going on in my life by the the amount of books I consume in a week.
I have stated before that one of the last things my Mother did before she died was to sign me up for a book club so I would get a new book every month.
I do remember my favorites and would look forward to more every month waiting for that package to arrive. Ramona the Pest my all time favorite as a child and a series, if I remember right called Archibald. These two were always in trouble but were funny and innocent. I loved those books.
I read to my children and they all have a love of books to this day. I remember some of their favorites were the Berenstein Bears. Anything to do with fairytales and fantasy were their favorites.
There was also a Shel Silverstein book I am trying to remember the exact name Where the Wild Things Are? I remember reading that and then reading it to my youngest son and he loved that book.
Later the kids read all of the Goosebumps series and we had them all!
I feel that if you teach a child to read they can accomplish anything!
I keep seeing the new invention on Amazon called a Kindle ( I think that is the name) it is an electronic book that you can download any book you want on to it and read off of it.
I just can't seem to get into that technology. There is something about holding a real book whether it is a hardback or paperback that is so comforting. The excitement of cracking open the cover and starting the first page. The smell and the tactile feeling of holding the authors words in your hand that says to me this is a BOOK. This is such an accomplishment! Somebody labored and wrote so I would have a story to read and enjoy. What a truly amazing gift they have and a gift to me for my brain, imagination and soul.

VIG - Great blog!! I have ALWAYS been a bookworm. When I was younger I read the whole Little House on the Prairie series, Little Women was a favorite, and when I got to middle school I remember being a Judy Blume fan. I of course constantly read to the kids. Dr. Suess was definitely a favorite, as was Eric Carle books. When the Harry Potter series came out, Sam was still quite young, but bought the first book to see what all the fuss was about. I instantly fell in love!!! I think I'm a bigger fan than the kids (I know.....dork!!!) Thanks for the video. I remember watching it live and still think it is fabulous!!!

For those of you who have asked and for those of you who haven't...the splinters have been removed from my butt. I have been put on an IV drip of chocolate so all should be back to normal in a day or so. Thanks for your concern.
VIG - great blog - my mom had to fight me all the way about reading - I did not enjoy it.. Now, I enjoy reading books to my nephew - nothing better than the little guy wanting to crawl up in your lap and have you read to him.
Shirley - I am SO happy to read that the splinter has been removed. No better medicine than chocolate!!

A few of you have mentioned Little Women and Nancy Drew. I enjoyed those very much as a child. Now I seem to gravitate to whatever Oprah is recommending. I usually enjoy those.

I read Dr. Suess to my children and now to my grandchildren. I enjoy that so much!!
A funny story ~ I read The Bernstein Bears Shoot the Rapids over 100 times to my son when he was a toddler. After so many times reading this book to him he asked me why the Bernstein Bears want to shoot the rabbits?!! What does not make sense to children, they make sense of it!

My childhood would have been so different without access to books. They were such a big part of my life. I have loved reading "The Anne of Green Gables" series over and over again. I wouldn't like to admit how many times I have read those books since I have become an adult. To me every summer lying in the hammock and reading the descriptions of nature by L.M. Montgomery was like being close to heaven. My love of those books started when I was seven and my sister would read one chapter to me every night at bedtime. At seven I would not have been able to read it myself but I certainly could understand the story when it was read to me.
My favourite aunt sent me the first three books of "The Bobbsey Twins". I was so disappointed when my mother took me to the Public Library to get #4 only to be told that the library did not carry the series because they were not considered suitable reading for children. I could never find the answer to that mystery but I think some critics found them to have racial overtones. I don't know if the libraries have them now but I ended up slowly getting the whole series and loved them.
The first twenty minutes after lunch was story time in my classrooms and it was our favourite time of the day. The children loved Dr. Seuss but I don't think there was a book in our school library that the children didn't love. We enjoyed our circle time sitting on the carpet with ample cushions if you wanted one. What fine memories.
Now I love giving books to my grandchildren. Of course "I'll Love You Forever" and "Good Night Moon" are always two of the first. My one year old grand daughter is always "reading" her books. Learning how to turn the pages and "read" the pictures is the start of learning to read. In my first year of teaching I had underprivileged children, some of whom had never seen a book. We had to start with "Reading Readiness" and that took about 3 months. Today most children go into kindergarten able to read simple stories.
I can no longer read comfortably because of my left eye. The last series I enjoyed reading was "Poldark". I always imagined the red headed heroine in that story was similar to my great grandmother Susanna O'Shay who lived in Ireland. When I get to heaven I am going to check that one out.

Oh! I forgot about the Jungle Book and Dr Dolittle... I loved them too!
Mom doesn't like much about the house...She hates that it has a picture window, the cabinets are too small as is the house in general (which she originally wanted) She doesn't like the floors or the woodwork either. I just can't tell you how upset all of this is making me...
scirish- don't let it get to you. I think she is just being resistant to change. No matter where she moved there would be fault with it. She will learn to appreciate it once she gets over the whole moving thing. As with any senior, it can be traumatic whether they instigated it or not. Of course, this is just my humble opinion. ((HUGS)) to you for dealing with the whole process. I just moved my mom into a new place in January so I know how stressfull this all is!
I am home after having a fantastic time away! Me and my new car (just a little bit excited about that!) got home across Zona's Pacific River really late last night (some ferries had broken down and I had to take the long way home!) and came home to Carol's note saying she was going to post this blog today. That was the cherry on top of a really good holiday cake! Thanks, Carol!
I slept in and I have absolutely no food in my place, so I am running out to get something to eat, but just wanted to say thanks so much for the nice words about the blog and contributing tales of your favourite childhood books! I will respond more when I get back from my food retrieval mission!
The book that I pick up the most is The Vitamn Bible written my Earl Mindell PHD. It is a book that covers everything that your doctors don't discuss with you from antioxidents, how to boost your metabolism, how to ward off a cold,how to strengthen yuor bodies defenses against cancer before you do have cancer, how to ease hot flashes, etc.It touches on everything!
The next book would be Why Do Bad Things happen To Good People written by a former Rabbi. It is also available in audio. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has lost a loved one and needs help coping with that or other life crisises.
90 Minutes In Heaven, a true story written by a Houston minister is a book that everyone I know of who has read it has thought it to be awesome. For Christmas I bought the book as gifts for friends and family. They all grew a lot internally from reading that book.
Lastly I have read most all of Sylvia Browne's books. That woman has the greatest mind , maturity in writing and just makes you think and adds new deminsions to your soul just by reading her books.
When I was 21 I read romance novels but for the past 15 years I have read books that are non fiction and help be achieve knowledge.

TINKA - Oh, thank you for reminding me about I'll Love You Forever!!! I love that book. "I'll love you forever, I'll love you for always, as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be" That is my absolute favorite line from that book!!! The other book that came in handy was The Kissing Hand. My oldest son really had a hard time leaving me for kindergarten, so his Godmother (who is a 2nd grade teacher recommended that book). It made him not quite so scared that my kisses were just a touch away in his hand. :D

scirish Congrats on #1 today. I'm so sorry that your mom is not liking the new house. I know how very hard you worked on it. It's hard to not have that appreciated, I know. She is probably terrified of the change. It may take a while but she will make it her own and come to feel that it is "home". (((HUGS)))

As a kid, I devoured the Nancy Drew series. I read other things, but they were definitely my favorite. I remember a dentist telling me that if a particular tooth wasn't out by the next visit, he was going to pull it. Well, that night, as I read my Nancy Drew book, I worked on that tooth, wiggling it and wrenching it, until I had it out.
I still love a good mystery and I still hate dentists!

Jodi - Thanks for the suggestion. I do not have "The Kissing Hand" but I will buy it for my little grand daughter. Do you know the author? If not, I can 'google' it.
Yes, I really like Robert Munsch's "Love You Forever", just as I do most of his books. A few of his books have words that I don't find appropriate but others don't mind. I like his "A Promise is a Promise" because it introduces children to a different culture-The Inuits.
My second favourite book for little children is "Guess How Much I Love You?" by Sam McBratney. The only trouble with these books is the fact that you have to learn to read them without crying. The first time I read "I'll Love You Forever," I could hardly get through it.
Two other sweet stories for little ones are "A Special Gift" by Andrea Spalding and "I'll Always Love You" by Hans Wilhelm. It's a book with few words but a lot of feeling. It is the story of a little boy and his dog Elfie and how they grew up together. Of course Elfie grows up faster and the boy has to accept his dog growing
old and eventually dying. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a child and a pet. It could someday be very helpful. It even helps me and I am no longer a 5 year old child, at least not on the outside.

Aaahhh, books. Thanks, VIG. I'm amazed that I have such a love for books, or that I even learned to read, as I don't remember ever being read to by either parent or being given books as gifts. Reading aloud was all about 'Daily Devotions' from Our Daily Bread! Magazines? LIFE (I couldn't wait to see the full page photo at the end), Ladies Home Journal and Field & Stream...no kid stuff :(

The first books I remember seeing in our home were shelves of Readers' Digest condensed versions, a new beautiful binding quarterly, year after year. Your blog led me to Wikipedia, where I was surprised to find a near-complete listing of all the ones from my earliest memories. The first 'book' I remember being totally engrossed in was not a child's book, but rather 'The Day Lincoln' Was Shot' (I can still see all the pictures), then 'Onions in the Stew', by Betty MacDonald (The Egg & I, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle) from the RD series. I was 7 years old.
Most of my childhood allowance was spent at Newberry's or Woolworth's buying 'Heidi', 'Tom Sawyer', etc...all the classics, plus 'Sue Barton, Student Nurse' series.
Loved reading to/with daughter. Her early favorites...The Berenstain Bears series and Shel Silverstein's 'Where the Sidewalk Ends'. Then Pippi Longstocking, Amelia Bedelia, Judy Blume...then came boys, and I don't think she read a book again voluntarily until she became a mom!
Most of my reading is non-fiction now but I love a winter Saturday morning, curled up in front of the fire re-reading Rosamunde Pilcher (The Shell Seekers, Coming Home, September.

Tink...did your daughter get on the ferry? I just saw on the news that there is a four hour wait becuase of the broken down ferry. Hope she gets over okay! I love how you read to your students every day after lunch and how you made it such a pleasant experience. I am going to do the same thing when I move into my own class next year (hopefully!!!)

I try not to get excited about material things...but I have to say there is nothing like a new car. It is much more economical and environmentally friendly than my other car. It's a Mazda 3 Sport and it is very fun!

VIG: I loved so many of the Stottlemeyer stable series... Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, of course. Cherry Ames. But my favorite was Bomba the Jungle Boy! I can't begin to count how many times I read "Bomba the Jungle Boy at the Giant Cataract"!!
Started out on the Thornton W. Burgess animal stories... I remember reading Reddy Fox over and over in first grade!

Others: LOVED the Walter Farley Black Stallion books, the Enid Blyton "Adventure" series, and "Elizabeth of the Garrett Theatre"!
And then there was "Tales to Tremble By"!! I LOVED "The Judge's House" by Bram Stoker! Absolutely chilling!
My absolutely favorite past time as a kid: Drinking lemonade, eating Dare Chocolate Chip Cookies, and reading a good book! :)
And then there was that day, I think in 1975, when I idly picked up a paperback horror novel, by an author I'd never heard of, about an awkward teenage girl with psychokinetic powers who wreaks havoc at her school prom.
I was hooked immediately, and have read virtually everything that the author of that story has published since!
My mother is a very big reader and a regular at her local library. She used to take my little brother and I to the library every week to pick out books. We'd then go across the street to the soda fountain and have a flavored Coke. I always had a hard time deciding between chocolate, cherry or vanilla Coke, as I loved them all. Chocolate was probably chosen the most frequently.
I remember in 6th grade, my teacher, Mr. White, read "Up Periscope" aloud to us. I was totally enthralled. Each chapter seemed to be a cliff hanger.
I always read to my kids each night before bed. Besides wanting them to enjoy reading, it was a good way to have some nice quiet time with them, especially since I was a working single mom during that time.
Bear The only book I ever read twice was "The Stand".
Bear~~Did that author perhaps write the book which became Steven Spielberg's first movie??? and which may actually be the reason why the movie 'Breakdown' scares the bejeebers out of me?

When I was a little girl I belonged to Disney's book of the month club.
I loved all the books I got each month in the mail. I wished my mother would have kept them.
I read to my own children all the time and I love it.
My nerdy husband and I have books everywhere.
In fifth grade I fell in love with Nancy Drew and I read all her books.
If I had the money I would go buy all her first editions.
Lynn, I have always thought of books as my best friend too.
The library is one of my favorite places in the whole wide world.

Hi Owls. I hope everyone is having a good day. I have been crazy busy and out of the house since 8am and just got back. I think I'll pour a glass of wine and collapse.
VIG, I love the blog today. As a child, my parents never read to me. My Mom worked as a seamstress and was always busy cooking and cleaning when she was home, so there was little one-on-one time. However when I was in the third grade, I was lucky enough to be chosen to appear on the Art Linkletter radio show in the 'Kids Say The Darnedest Things' segment, and I received a whole set of Golden books as a prize. I loved those books.
When I was 11, Gone With The Wind was re-released and I went to see it with my cousins. I fell so in love with the movie and the characters that I decided to read the book. I have read it 3 times since then.
I also read the Nancy Drew series, but I never read the Hardy Boys. I don't know why.
When my children were young I read to them all the time. I also subscribed to Sesame Street Magazine for them. As soon as the magazine would come in the mail, we would sit and read it together. They also loved to do all the puzzles and games in the magazine. When they outgrew Sesame Street, we got One, Two, Three Contact magazine, which was for ages 8-11 I think, and they loved that too.
Yep, Jodi, the appointment is Monday morning 8:30.

MEK, I was on the radio show before he was on TV and I told the world how I watched TV through the keyhole in my bedroom door after my Mom put me to bed. I was 8 years old and I just knew my Mom wasn't listening because we went to the studio with our teacher. LOL I wish we had a tape of that show.

VIG~ great blog (and car!) I love books...love love love to read....will read most anything~ :D My parents never read to me when i was little, but I always remember having a book in my hands. I read every Hardy Boys book more than once. Loved Curious George! When my kids were little, I loved to read The Lady With the Alligator Purse to them. I read it so often, I had it memorized! Now I read anything and everything. I met a lady on the phones at work who is an author. I asked what she wrote and she said Regency Novels. Didn't know what they were, so I googled her. lol....she writes historical smut books...I've read all of them now and I email her when I finish one and tell her how much I love them~ Her name is Mary Jo Putney~ Also....I really loved "Lamb - The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Friend".....my sister has also read it and a couple of weeks ago at church, I leaned over and reminded her of something from the book and we both laughed. I love sharing books as well~

Urgg...Not having a good day, my right ear is all plugged up, I am hoping its excess wax and not some kind of weird object. I remember hearing once about a bug that got into someones ear, and kinda lived there for while, THIS is freakin me out! Could not get an appt with my Dr today, so I have to wait till Monday! In the meantime I bought some ear drops for wax, which I now think is making it worse...
What, did someone say something! Can't hear ya, can you speak up..

While it was actually written by Richard Matheson, it was scary enough I believed him! After being totally traumatized by reading, and later seeing, 'Helter Skelter' in the 70's, I swore off scary/bloody books and movies. Tried, unsuccessfully, to make it through 'Carrie'; couldn't resist 'The Shining', but they still creep me out.

My first favorite book had no words, it was "Where the Wild Things Are". I just loved that book. One of my faves to read my kids was "Love you Forever"..that book always makes me cry!
My favorite series of all time was the Chronicles of Narnia. Second fave was Nancy Drew.

Dreama: My Father In Law used to live by that book too! It is a good one. There is another one called "Back to Eden" that has natural remedies and stuff. My mom uses that one a lot.
Oh CpGem, I hate when I have something in my ear like that. I hope that it gets unclogged soon. One time my daughter's was clogged (she had that problem too) and I RUPTERED her eardrum!! bad bad mommmy day there with trip to the emergency room..*sigh*..anyway, I hope that your ear wax stuff works. One thing that worked for my daughter..get a steamy hot wash cloth and put it in a coffee cup and put it over your ear. The steam seemed to unclog it. Dont' let the hot cloth touch ear, it should be at the bottom of the cup.

Like bon'o, I can't remember a soul reading to me as a child and we hardly had any books in our home. When I became a mother, all that changed. Our house is filled with books. So many, in fact, that it could be a small town library!
My husband is an avid reader of just about everything. To be honest, I don't read many books for grown ups. I start them and never seem to find the time to finish them. However, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Children's books. I always read to my kids. I even still read to my 10 yr old.
I work at an elementary school, so I'm around children's books every day! Each year at the school book fair, people joke that they'll have to "cut me off" because of my "book problem". I spend way too much money at that fair, but it helps the school and I get a lot of great books in return.
My absolute favorite book is The Lorax. LOVE the message behind it. I love The Sneetches too. Both are Dr. Seuss books.
I collect Robert Sabuda pop-up books. They are beautiful and fascinating!
Lynn: The Berenstein Bears series of books were my son's favorite. We have sooooo many of them. What a sweet memory it is to think of me reading to that little boy, who is all grown up and married now.
Well, I'll have to catch up on comments tomorrow. I'm so darn tired.
