by BebbiAll my life I have admired people who volunteer their time. I think that is the truest way to show that your life’s “cup runneth over”. I used to work full time and part time at a bookstore, when I finally realized I didn’t have to worry about money as much, I gave my notice on my part time job. I figured I could spend the 20 hours giving back and started volunteering instead. I decided I wanted to work one on one with a person and make that sort of impact rather than a more general way of helping others.
Volunteering for me was always with my kids in mind at first. Sports functions, band practice, school stuff and field trips kept me busy. As they got older, I worked because teenagers want all kinds of expensive things and they need more money for college and all that. When I decided to volunteer instead of work my part time job, it was a great decision!
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a top notch organization! I started with BB/BS of Kentuckiana several years ago. I was matched with an awesome girl who was 7 years old named Shiann. She and I went through a lot together. My family and I love her and she will be a part of my life forever. She is 12 now. When she and I met, she was with her mom. Since then she has been at 3 foster homes and one aunt’s house. Without going into too much detail, she has had a lot of challenges. BB/BS is great because they give you free tickets to stuff and we got to be in their brochures. We were interviewed on the news and just loved spending time together. She loves to read so we spent a lot of time at the library. Also, we enjoyed swimming and bicycling.
After Shiann moved away to be adopted (she has since come back in town now), I decided to volunteer in a totally different way. I went through training (40 hours!) to become a hospital advocate for the Women’s Center. I go on hospital runs for domestic violence cases and sexual assaults. My job is to give support and information to women in a very critical time of need. It is very rewarding but also draining at times.
One run I went on recently made me realize how much each little piece of volunteering fits together. I went to the Women’s center to be an advocate for someone who was raped. When she was done with her exam, the victim said she would need clothes. The nurse got out a large bundle of clothes in her size. It was packaged in a very large zip lock bag. It had in it comfortable pants, a nice t-shirt, matching zippered sweatshirt, a pair of cute sandals, a small package of tissues and a little note. I saw how that helped someone in need. It made me cry to watch her read the note and realize it was a church near where I lived that packed up that little care package. I called the church the next day, just to tell them that I was there when the package made it to its recipient and how much it helped. I feel like every time I help, I see small miracles and it really touches me so deeply.
I tell my family and friends, I went from one extreme of volunteering to the other! From taking a bright, bubbly 7 year old to a ball game or a movie and now to going to a hospital in a time of crisis. No matter what I do though, I get a sense of fulfillment out of volunteering. It fulfills a part of me that nothing else can.

I volunteer as most people on the blog know in my local foodbank. Yes it is very rewarding and at times can be exhausting,frustrating,complex but ultimately very rewarding.
I encourage everyone when they have the time to pick a program and volunteer it can change a persons life.
Lately I have been thinking about going through the Redcross training but am just waiting to see what shakes out here at home before I make the big decision.

I have always thought it is easier to give money then your time to an organization.
I am guilty of doing that.
Before all my children were born, I did do volunteer work for our "Let's feed the children" program.
During the summer our town and the town next to ours makes free sack lunches for the children.
There is about eight different buildings in the two towns where all the sack lunches are and the children just have to come to the door to get one.
I am really proud that our town does that and that we have a lot of volunteers every year that help with that program.
I had a lot of fun doing it. I'm hoping next summer to volunteer again for it.

May I send you my heartfelt sympathy on the drivers license thingy. It is a curse and blessing. You will forever worry but dang its great to send them for that gallon of milk when you don't feel like it!
Bebbi- your blog is great. I have done various volunteer work over the years, and it is the best feeling in the world to make a difference in someones life.
MY youngest son has always volunteered- currently he does the San Fransisco Aid Crisis Hotline. But he has worked with planned parenthood, the American Red Cross, the Rodney Scheel house (a home for aids patients) and various others. I think that is one of the things that makes us so proud of him. He parties like any other young person- but he always has time to help out. I honestly can say that I wish I was more like him in that way.
Day 2 of firemen (they are not as cute today). I feel like I am on a parade route with all the traffic going by to see the building. Today they are going to knock some of the walls down, so still have to park in the median on the road.

Good morning Goldie - I agree with you about our children getting their driving licenses. Up until they are teenagers you know early in the evening that they are safely tucked into bed. Then they get old enough to date and be in cars with friends. I always preferred my kids to be doing the driving because I just didn't know how the others drove. Either way I would love to hear them come in at night and know they were safely home. I still worry when my family drives away, especially my son who must drive over the Malahat. There have been more accidents and deaths on that highway than any other in Canada. I am always praying that the guardian angels are doing their work.

A firetruck that is here on scene while they do the investigation, and I guess knock down a wall just pulled out of the drive and in front of my building.
Out gets the driver, comes around to the side of the truck and pulls out his fire gear.(he was in a tshirt and blue pants). So all of a sudden he takes his pants off!! Yes, in front of my window standing in his jockey shorts then puts on his fire gear. No shit! LOL
I couldn't pay for this type of entertainment on the job.......:) :)

A WONDERFUL blog bebbi!
My volunteering is all related to my children. I was my son's room-mom from k-6. I was his den mother and worked at the Trading Post at Boy Scout camp. Went on field trips, band trips, etc. Was, and still am, an active member of the PTC. (We call it the Parent/Teacher Club here.) The PTC does A LOT!!!!!!!!!
I'm now room-mom for my daughter's class. I volunteer enough at her Circus Arts studio that it could be counted as a full-time job. I volunteer at our local museum, where our whole family are members. I'm starting my 5th year as a Girl Scout Leader, where our troop volunteers all over the place most of the year.
You're right bebbi...The rewards are immeasurable! It gives you such a great feeling. So glad you wrote a blog about this because maybe it will spur someone to become a volunteer somewhere. The needs out there are great. You won't have any trouble finding a place that needs you.
I certainly admire you for the work you do, bebbi! MAJOR KUDOS!!!

Bebbi - What a great blog. I certainly admire the work you do and have done through the years. I don't know what we would do without our volunteers.
We need so many of them in this city because we have so many elderly here. I wish I could say I did a lot of volunteering. My intentions were good. When I retired, I was planning on volunteering at the schools in our district. Teacher Aids are so in demand. Then I found I was needed to be the care giver to my grandchildren. I do volunteer a lot of my time when I am at my mother's care home. It isn't just my mom I look after. They are so short staffed that I am always getting something or doing something for the other men and women too. Some of them never get a visitor.
Each day I am there, I take Tango and Tia to each person who likes dogs. It makes them so happy. There is one lady who never speaks unless she sees a dog. And then she repeats. "Oh Teddy, Oh Teddy", over and over again. My mother has been in care for 8 years so I guess I could say I have done volunteer work. It isn't however organized work like you do Bebbi. You should get a medal for what you do.

iteach: You're an elementary school teacher. My lord, I KNOW what elementary school teachers go through! NOT taking away from teachers of the higher grades but I've worked K-12 and, let me tell y'all, elementary school teachers have to be teachers, mothers(fathers), mentors, nurses, therapists, artists, negotiaters, wranglers, maids....the list goes on and on. AND they certainly do NOT get paid enough for the work they do. Countless volunteer hours go into being a school teacher, and people just don't realize that. So, my hat goes off to you iteach, and I think there may be other teachers here too. You all impress and inspire me.

I used to be a member of a ladies auxillary and we did wonderful things... we did raffles ever weekend for " our selcted charities"... we would put on 2 major benifits a year... they took alot of planning...
but we would help people in need in our little town.. and we would donate money to bigger charities...
I really miss it...
too many thieves came in and took over our little club.... the mens part.. anyway... . that is a whole other story for a whole other day!!!!
I admire what you do... that is soooo hard to be able to comfort people in that time in their life!!!

While I 'dabble' in other causes, my volunteer organization of choice is Habitat for Humanity. There's something very rewarding about working shoulder-to-shoulder with folks to literally 'build' a better life for their families and be contributing members of the community. I've found most can't wait to be able to "pay it forward".

I wanted to comment on Iteach's post about giving money.
Don't ever think of it as just giving money. Money is so important to so many charities!
Our foodbank realizes that many people have such a shortage of time that they only way they can support their favorite charities is to give with money. We are always thrilled with any dollar donation that is given in our name. That money helps buy food, diapers, baby food, hygiene items gas for our volunteers to go pick up food from donors at the grocery stores etc.. It also helps to keep out lights and heat on. Often times it helps pay the insurance for the building and to help with repairs. It is used in so many ways that we could not operate with out it.
I do have to say that our foodbank is unique and is talked about in the foodbank circles in our area because we do not have any paid positions. It is all 100 percent volunteer hours. From just helping weekly to our paper work.
Some of you may not know that this is a major issue as many non profits only function because they receive grants to pay a director and other admin positions. We took a pledge to not go this route as we did not want to create an enviroment of if they get paid why can't I? For now it has worked for us and we will continue this policy. I do understand why some have to as their programs become so large and it is very hard to find people who can volunteer 40 or more hours a week to keep things going.
I have to say I like our grass roots approach. We also did not partner with any religious organization. We did this with major consideration and thought. We wanted a place were people could come and would not feel like they were being influenced in any way.
We just wanted to feed hungry people. No judgements. This is why I keep volunteering there.

Bebbi, Great blog today. Kudos to you for all the time you give to a very important cause. I worked an agency that funded Public Safety and Victim Services organizations and the volunteers are their lifeline.
Currently I volunteer at our local foodbank, but I am not as active as Lynn D. I only work there one morning a week. I should do more.
I also volunteer at Christmas Promise, which is an organization that provides Christmas gifts to approx. 300 families who otherwise wouldn't have a Christmas. We start gathering donations in late November and work through December. Throughout the year, I also help decorate approx. 1000 Christmas stockings for needy children. I love this organization because it is totally staffed by volunteers. Every penny that is donated goes to the families. And I so agree with those who have said how rewarding it is to be a volunteer. I love it.
I have another volunteer position at 3 local theatre companies. I really feel that this is a paid position because I get to see all the plays.
I am not helping them as much as they are allowing me the privilege of seeing plays I would otherwise not be able to afford. Although, the management of all these organizations tells us that without the volunteers, they would not be able to put on the wonderful productions they do.
Two of the companies conduct Children's theatre workshops and work closely with schools to keep kids involved in the arts. Tim Busfield started one of the theatres and his brother works there full time. These two have given back so much to the community, especially schools, that I am honored to be a part of this group.
Tina, congrats on # 1 today. Good luck to your son on his DMV test and good luck to you, too. If you don't color your hair yet, you will soon!

IBB, Planning benefits can be a major stresser. My Hubby used to put on golf tournaments to benefit Hospice. The first one he did brought $6,000 profit that was donated to Hospice. We did 6 before he died and the final one brought $60,000 that was donated to Hospice. And all of it was done with volunteers.
Bon'O, Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful cause.
MEK, As Lynn D, said, without the financial donations, some of the charitable organizations would not be able to continue. Thank you for that.
SacBarb - Thank you for the kind comment. I think the ladies and men at Glenwarren really love having Tango and Tia visit them. Most of them had pets in the past and long for them now.

what an excellant blog!And kudos to you! I always wanted to be a part of BB&BS program when I was younger but as things turned out I took in my 2 & 4 year old niece and nephew and then later in life I took in 2 girls. I had dated their Dad briefly. He was worthless. Their Mother had remarried and was grateful that I'd keep her girls all summer long and every week end. So needless to say she wasn't any better than their Dad.
For many years now I have worked with animal rescue. It's not all fun and games. It can be very heart wrenching and exhausting. What angers me is when people try to persuade me that it's too depressing and they rather not know what goes on. I don't think people should ever stick their heads in the sand or not get involved in helping whether it be animal rescue, cancer patients, the elderly, BB& BS, rape crisis, suicide hotlines or any of the many organizations out there that need help.
A lot of people have too much time on their hands and could be spending their free time giving of themselves instead of sitting at a computer venting and trying to create viruses, ruin blogs, hack profiles and all of the common things I'm sure that we all hear about now days.
I am very proud to know you Bebbi!

I am like Donna--I currently do and have volunteered at school as a room mother, office helper, guidance helper, etc. I have held just about every position in Cub Scouts. I have always enjoyed it but mighty glad those cub days are over!

Good morning/afternoon to everyone! I'm too tired to name you individually. I stayed up until 2:30 waiting for the rain to stop so they could continue the Canada/USA softball game, but they didn't. It will be finished sometime tonight I guess.
You all do such wonderful thing for your community. All the organizations are very lucky to have you. Where would the Olympics be without all the volunteers?
I have helped out at the canteen in the arena and driven people to the city for appointments on occassion. I have helped seniors with their income tax for no fee. I usually charge $25.00 but I can't justify chargeing someone on a fixed income that amount, and they are always very grateful.
Goldie please keep us updated on the firemen and their hoses! Video would be good!

Lynn: I remember you talking about the food bank. My daughter does "Dare to Care" here in Louisville. She sorts cans, fills backpacks for a weekend program for kids who might not get a meal all weekend and goes to their festivals. She really likes it too. I think that the foodbank has to be very rewarding because you know you are helping people so much by providing them a decent meal.
Iteach: That is a big way to help, by giving money, because it is definitely equally as important!
Goldie: That is awesome about your son. My daughter is like that too. You should be proud. :) What an awesome guy. I don't know many boys that are that way so young. He must have a tremendous heart!! :)

Hart: I can relate to the volunteering for the children. I did that a lot too, but I worked fulltime so I could never be there during the day. It sure sounds like you did a wonderful thing though. I was always envious of mother's like you, because I always had to work, work, work. :( I did make sure I went on at least one field trip each year, helped with as much in the evening and all that though.

What I see here today, besides firemen and their hoses, are how giving and loving all the owls are. It seems everyone here is a giver in one way or the other. No wonder I love having you as friends.
I really can't say I've done that much volunteering besides the usual school related things when my kids were young. For many years I was involved in feral cat/kitten rescue, if that counts. Otherwise, I am a generous giver to several worthy causes and contribute to the food drives.
Goldie Well, you got a free show today. How lucky for you! Did you know firemen have two types of hoses; hard and soft? They also cross-lay hose. LOL
Well I just did one of the things I have been putting off for about three months...I ordered some parts for my CPAP machine. I know, big deal, but with no money coming in I was worrying on how I would pay for it. Well I guess Visa will take care of it for now. My humidifier has been making a noise that is keeping me awake and I need to get it fixed or replace (fixed I hope is cheaper, cause replacement is about $350.00). I also needed filters and a new headgear.
Now if I could just make that other call. I don't know why I am sharing all this with you guys but anyway I did. This has been my exciting day! WOOHOO!! I'll be back later.

I have had the most exhausting day ever. My daughter fractured her foot in three places and we spent the afternoon at the orthopaedic specialist, where my daughter broke into tears when she saw the boot. See link:

To which, I told her I would not get the boot if she wasn't going to wear it, to which she responded that she wasn't going to wear it, to which the doctor's and nurses flipped out, to which brought a flood of tears, to which the technician said to her, "You are 18 years old and you have broken your foot, it is time for you to grow up and be responsible for yourself." To which my daughter FINALLY acknowledged and agreed she would where it, to which lead to her getting it fitted and on her foot. Sheesh. Why oh Why do kids have to be so difficult and do they EVER grow up??? *rolling eyes*
Stressful day. only worked half of it so a less pay next week AND a big medical bill. *sigh* Okay..whine OVER.

Bebbi: I work full-time too (except in the summer). I'm just lucky that I've always had jobs that I can get off long enough to be a part of my kids' school functions. When I had my state job, I just took vacation time to go to my son's school activities. Then I stopped working when he was 10 and my daughter was born. I went back to work when she started Kindergarten, but I worked at her school. That was so nice. I'd just pop in and out of her clas if there was a party in her room. Or I'd be there anyway for a program or assembly. Now that she's at a different school, it makes things difficult. I only got to attend two functions at her school last year, but her homeroom teacher still asked me to be room-mom. She wanted me to call everyone, organize everything and make sure there were parents there to help. So I did a lot of work for her AFTER my work hours.
You know what they always say.....Find the busiest person you can, and that person will get the job done.

I just wanted to check in. I was about to leave for the Farmer's market in Sidney and then to have dinner by the sea. Good Early Evening..
My favorite thing to volunteer for is the Professional Golf tournaments!! That is probably my most favorite week of the whole year!!! We get the top 64 players in the World - can't get any better than that.. all the sponsors are crossing their fingers that Tiger Woods has fully recovered from his knee surgery by Feb...
we used to have several women's tournaments that we volunteered for also - but their sponsors canceled - and with no money - there is no tournament..
any word yet from Donna Jean??!!

Hello everyone. Donna Jean just called as I was headed out the door, but I'll give a quick update.
Laurie is doing well and the pacemaker is in and working. They did have a problem getting her IV in and Donna finally had to go into the OR to help calm Laurie and they finally were able to put it in her foot.
Donna is going to try to post a comment after her other daughter goes home. She thanks everyone for their prayers and thoughts.
I have to run. I am going to meet some former co-workers for dinner. BBL

When my son was 6 weeks old he was hopitilized because of his intolerence to milk (formula), they had to drug him, wrap his little arms up in a blanket and put the IV in his head because his little arms and legs were to small. I still get the willey's when I remember having to hold him while they did that..

Hello Owls: I have been trying to read all the comments and have enjoyed reading them. Gosh darn it Bebbi, I have been procrastinating for over a year plus trying to get the courage just to write on volunteering! Now I will be thinking of another topic for the next year :)
TINA: Good luck with your son driving. I still am not too crazy to ride with my son especially since he is uaually in a police car...I think he always thinks he is and I am not too thrilled with that at all.
Tammy has been sleeping most of the day unless she was throwing up and that was frequently. I called the dr and they gave her a different pain pill and medicine for nausea. She has been in quite a bit of pain as well. She did send me on an errand for diet sprite and milk duds!
Kids and husband are doing fine. Thank you so much for all the well wishes, prayers, etc. I appreciate them so much.

YES Donna I cried and cried and felt like the worst mother in the world. But we got him over the hump and he is now 6'5 and about 290. So no damage done there!
Yes, it is sad my firemen are gone, but the good news is that the construction guys are going to have to come raze the place and clean-up, so there is still hope of hunk sightening!

Years ago I used to volunteer with the Homeless. That was a very interesting job and I came to look at the homeless in a whole new light. I was realizing that everyone without a place to stay was not the "kind" of person I thought they would be. There were some just like you and me and so many battered women with children. Anyway, my dad got sick so I had to quit doing that work.
I started doing volunteer with Hospice almost a year ago. I am assigned a few patients and visit with them and their family. So far they have all been at nursing homes. It has been sad but it also has been rewarding helping with the families and knowing a patients wishes were being carried out. There is a lot of training with this particular Hospice and then more every quarter but it is so interesting to listen to the nurses, chaplains and social workers talk to us.
Both of my parents were in Hospice before they died. They only were there for pretty short times but Hospice was so nice and so caring with us. My biggest experience with Hospice was after my husband died. He died suddenly so Hospice wasn't involved but when trying to find a grieving group, Hospice was the only one that would take me before six months had gone by. I needed grieving help right then...not in six months. I will always feel that I owe my sanity today to Hospice for helping me so much and caring.

I'm so exhausted!
We were at our county fair for six hours, but we had the greatest time.
The kids went on rides, played only two games (way too expensive), watched a free puppet show, and watched a really cool free horse show.
I love watching the horses perform.
Dianne: I think that a lot of the things we volunteer for are for reasons unique to us. I chose BB/BS because I had a stepmother who always did stuff with me and knew how to have fun. She taught me a lot, and it made me want to do that for another young person.
