Sad moments of TV

Today I was thinking of the saddest memories on TV and the happiest ones. I thought today I would share you my saddest memory on TV and tomorrow my happiest one.
Some of you might already be thinking of the last episode of MASH or JFK's funeral. However, mine is a little different. It was one that happened when I was a child and it has forever stuck in my mind. It was the day Mr. Hooper died on Sesame Street. He really did pass away and Sesame Street decided to incorporate it into their show.
I know that it is not fun to talk about sad moments, but I do believe they make us stronger. I think I was able to understand death more as I watched it from Big Bird's eyes.

ibb~I think we all could relate.
I guess my saddest day on television was the morning I watched the two airplanes hit the World trade Center buildings. I was in bed having coffee with Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson, and like everyone else, it was the biggest OMG moment in my life. As the minutes ticked by and the second plane hit, we all knew that this was not a tragic accident, but an attack on our beloved country.
iteach, and all teachers starting their school year this week and next, please know how much your dedication is appreciated.

Iteach I remember when Mr.Hooper died and I thought they handled it very well on the show. It's very hard to tell kids about death.
Remember how sad it was when the Mary Tyler Moore show ended with them all in a big hug walking out the door? Or the last time Carol Burnett sang "I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together". I loved that show. I use to watch a soap opera called "Another World". I was sad when that ende too. It's always sad when a series that you love ends.
Here in Canada we had a show called "Mr. Dressup" for kids. He had a "tickle" trunk where he kept all kinds of dress up clothes. He did arts and crafts and it was a fun kid show to watch. Just a few years ago Ernie Combs (who played Mr. Dressup) died and I remember thinking how sad that other kids won't get to see him.

Remember the last Johnny Carson Show? When Bette Midler sang? That brought a tear to my eye.
iteach: Wonderful blog! I, too, remember when Mr. Hooper died. Sesame St. handled it so well.
Sad TV moments....Any show with Michael Landon! I always cried when I watched "Little House on the Prairie", "Highway to Heaven", well, maybe not "Bonaza", but those other two shows were such tear-jerkers EVERY time!
I don't really recall specific episodes though.
Iteach, you mentioned M*A*S*H. The last episode was definitely sad, but do you guys remember when Henry Blake died? That was so unexpected and very sad.
I'm sure I could think of more sad TV moments but I don't know if I want to. I am trying to really enjoy this last day before I return to work.
Mom is taking me out to lunch to celebrate my b-day. Then my daughter has a 4 hr play rehearsal. I'm in charge of props so I have to be there the whole time today, to make sure everything runs smoothly with the props.
Open House is at my daughter's school tonight. Busy day here, so I'll probably not check back in until much later.

Iteach I have been racking my brain for the saddest moment I can remember on TV and I have to say there have been so many that I guess I have blocked the worst out.
I do remember watching the last MASH episode and my son was just a newborn it hit me so hard I was sobbing in front of the TV.
Like Ronnie I remember watching the Today show when the planes hit the World Trade center and being in shock and mourning for days as more and more footage was shown.
The days and days of footage from Katrina will last forever in my mind. You know I think this is probably one of the saddest moments for me. As I type images keep popping into my head, so I guess I have not totally blocked things out.
Iteach I hope all goes well at school this year! I can't believe how early some of you are starting back!
From yesterday I have to say you all had me in stitches this morning reading all of your comments! It is comforting to know that I am going through all of life's changes with all of you!
Renee Eve: I am so sorry to hear about your neighbor and am very sad for her children.
Hart: Sending up prayers for your friend and her son.
Dianne in Denver: I am so happy to hear the news that there were no cancer cells!!!! I hope they figure out what is causing the problems soon!

RONNIE - I'm right there with you....9/11 footage wasn't only sad, it was just so shocking. I remember watching the tv for weeks after that. I think we all were a bit numb.
Two more sad tv moments that stand out for me had to do with the show ER....and my beloved Dr. Green. I think it was in the first season (and just a few weeks after I had Sam by c-section) that Dr. Green's patient died after he performed an emergency c-section in the ER. The last scene of that episode brought me to my knees when Dr. Green was telling the father that his wife had died (as he was sitting in a rocking chair cradling his newborn child). The other episode was the death of Dr. Green.....it was done so well. I felt that I had lost a friend.
I hope everyone has a great Tuesday. I just got back from getting Jake's hair cut. We have school registration today...wish me luck!!!

For me the saddest moment was also the most shocking and scariest, and that was the Twin Towers. I knew I had 2 family members flying that morning.
Henry Blake dying on Mash.
The episode Jodi talked about on ER brought me to sobs.
Happy moments that bring tears as well are always in sporting events. I am such a sucker when they get the trophy or the medals. Makes me so happy for them.

Just stopping in to say hello and good morning before I go to sleep.
ITEACH: I think that watching the planes hit the World Trade Center had to be the saddest and most shocking moment on TV for me. I was watching television with my mom that morning when they switched coverage to a report "..of a plane flying too close to the city...". We watched, horrified as that plane..and then another hit the twin towers.
I was also watching TV the day the Challenger exploded. I was at work..and someone just happened to change the channel to another "routine" launch of the space shuttle. We stood there slack-jawed after the explosion.
These are two things I will remember with sadness, for as long as I live.
HART: Congrats on FIRST! OMG..I only have to hear the violins play on Little House...and I get tears in my eyes! I don't even have to know what the story is about.
IBB: Geez..long time no see! Great to almost catch you! ;)
DJEAN: Get some sleep..and I hope Laurie Elizabeth rests comfortably now too.
SCIRISH: Bette Midler singing to Johnny Carson had me tearing up too.
JODI: I'm going....LOL..

I read all the comments and I agree with every sad moment mentioned. It's hard to say which was the saddest because it seems whichever one you are watching at the time is the saddest thing you have ever seen. One other sad memory was watching the Challenger take off in 1986. There was a teacher aboard by the name of Christa McAlliffe. Because it was the first time for a teacher to be part of the crew, we at school were all watching it. It was such a tragedy when it exploded. The saddest moment for me was the look on Mrs. McAlliffe face when she first realized that something was going wrong with the take-off. Her expression went from such joy, watching her daughter accomplish so much, to horror in a couple of seconds. I will always have that picture in my mind.
Good Morning Zona-my-Baby - We must have been typing at the same time. Like mother like daughter I guess. Talk to you later. Now go to sleep or I will yell at you like another owl did yesterday. Why do we have to yell at you to get you go to bed. Right Jodi??

Donna and Zona - Little House on the Prairie was often sad but do you remember when Michael Landon gave his interview on Larry King? He told us that he had pancreatic cancer and only a few months to live. He was so brave the way he talked about how lucky he was to have had such a happy life. I cry when I think of it. I was in Arizona at the time. It seems like it was just yesterday.
I agree with every sad moment mentioned except those re: E.R. I have never seen a single episode of that show. I bet I missed a lot. The reason I say that is because I had never watched "Grey's Anotomy until Zona and VIG turned me on to that show. I love it so much, I have watched three full seasons in the last couple of weeks. That's a lot of T.V. time but it was oh so worth it.
Thanks to Zona for sending me the first two seasons and for VIG for nagging me about getting started into the series so we could all discuss it each week.
I see some of you have mentioned the planes hitting the Twin Towers as well as the Challenger explosions. Every time I see "Breaking News" come across my TV screen I cringe alittle.
I didn't see anyone mention "The Waltons". I was always crying over that show. The last episode of "Star Trek The Next Generation" was sad for me too.
Scirish - It's great getting your eyelashes dyed. I would never use mascara again. The first thing you have to do is find someone who is very good at it. It shouldn't sting at all. It is just like having someone put mascara on you when your eyes are closed. Wait 20 minutes and you open your eyes, rinse and you are done. I had one girl who didn't do it right (she had me keep my eyes open) and my eyes were stinging. I thought, "Oh my God I have injured my eyes, all for vanity". It didn't last and no damage was done. If done correctly,however, it should not sting at all.
My computer keeps 'pinging' to signal I have mail. It is probably Zona sitting and waiting at myspace. I will check it out and be back later.
Good morning Owls. I have just caught up on yesterday's blog and I have to agree with all the comments made. You all made me laugh, but I think I cried a little too, just thinking of my lost youth.
Iteach, another thought provoking subject. I think the saddest moment for me was 9/11/2001. I woke up a little after 6am and turned on the local news. The image in the screen was of a building with smoke pouring out. The anchor said a small plane accidentally hit one of the Twin Towers. Then when the second plane hit, we knew it wasn't an accident.
I was reduced to tears every time I saw someone holding a picture of a loved one and begging for information. So much coverage, and they kept showing the towers falling that I finally couldn't watch anymore.
Lynn D, Katrina was another sad moment for me too. Not only watching the people who lost everything, but the time it took for the government to help them and so many are still waiting.

I think I have to agree that 9/11 was the worst/saddest moment. My husband was working in a federal government building at the time and I couldn't get in touch with him. I was frantic and sobbing by the time we got through to each other. I'll never forget it and can only imagine what it was like for the ones who never got in touch with their loved ones.

The saddest thing I ever saw on television was the ending to "West Side Story" (I was only two when it was released in theatres). That movie gets me every time!
Honorable mention: The ending to "Camelot", when Gueneviere is banished to the convent!

I agree with all the tv moments so far.....the first thing I thought of when i read the blog was the Daytona 500 when Dale Earnhardt died. I remember calling my kids and their friends into the room to watch the final laps of the race. We were all watching with Dale crashed. I sent the kids off to play because I just knew he was gone. Hours later they announced that he had died. I cried then and again when they aired any tribute or his funeral.
Another OMG crying moment was the episode of "8 Simple Rules for Dating my Teenage Daughter" when John Ritter's character dies. He had died in real life and they decided to go on with the show, but had to explain his death. I cried like a baby~

Yes that was my daughter Zona waiting at Myspace. She is now tucked into bed and I am free for the day or at least 4 hours. She never sleeps long.

Sandie - I remember that 911 morning so well too. It was terrifying. It was the first day of school for my Japanese student. She didn't speak English so she didn't understand what she was seeing on T.V. I think she thought it was a movie. When she got home from school after hearing all about it from her Japanese friends she was so upset. They were all afraid to fly home at the end of their month here. Many of the girls paid $800 extra to fly home direct so that they didn't have to fly out of L. A. It was a dreadful time for so many people.
Tink: Do you have a high def TV? If so, yes, I'll bet WSS would look much better from DVD!

Princess Diana's car accident and her death - I came home from a baseball game - turned on the tv and could NOT believe what I was seeing...
Barbaro breaking his leg and having to be put down - then Eight Bells.......
I agree with Goldie - the Olympics make me cry - whether the athletes win or lose!!
and just recently - Tim Russert's death....... totally unexpected..
I'm sure as the day goes on - I will think of a million others...

Well kids I have to get some things done at home today and then I have to run out and mail my primary ballot.
Truly weird and surreal moment yesterday. I have been waiting for my ballot to show up. Last week I called and asked where it might be.
Well yesterday at 7:00pm my dogs started barking outside, Mr. Lynn D went to see what the commotion was about and came in a told me there was a woman at the gate that needed to talk to me. I groaned as I had just put on my lounging around the house crappy clothes on, but wandered down to find out what she wanted.
This woman was from the State auditors office! Very weird, well she was hand carrying my ballot to me because my name was one of thirty five that was flushed from their system by mistake!??? They had received the note about my call and investigated and found out this had happened. So she was out hand delivering part of those ballots!
It was so surreal because after seeing Swing Vote it just made me pause, it felt like a movie or candid camera moment!
I don't know whether to be angry or impressed that they followed through so I could get my ballot.
Any way have to run out and get it in the mail so it will be postmarked today!
Good Morning Mek - Yes all those events you mentioned were so sad.
Another sad time for me too was the Columbine School Massacre on April 20. 1999. It really had an effect on me. I don't think I left the TV for the whole day. Those children endured so much terror. My heart was sick for them.
The result of my being so absorbed was a near miss tragedy in my own life. I only had Tango at the time. She was never more than a few feet from me except when she went out to the fenced in back yard through her doggy door. Then I would be checking her every few minutes. Well, that day I was so engrossed in the sad events that were unfolding constantly on the TV I forgot about Tango. At 4:00 I thought I had better start the fireplace because my grandchildren were coming over. Just then the neighbour came to my door with a nearly drowned Tango. She had chased some ducks onto the winter cover of the swimming pool. It had rained and there were a couple of feet of water in the middle. Tango had slipped in and couldn't get out. It was over her head and she must have just kept on swimming. I found out later that another neighbour heard her crying for about an hour and thought someone had left her dog out in the backyard. He didn't check. When my closest neighbour came home he heard it, jumped the fence and brought Tango to safety. She wouldn't have lasted much longer. She was limp and had swallowed a lot of water. What a lesson that taught me! The swimming pool was filled in immediately. I never wanted to take that chance again. I couldn't believe I had not checked on her. Ever since then, I don't think more than a few minutes have passed by without my monitoring all three pets. Tango's guardian angel helped keep up her strength that day. I was so thankful and repentant.

TINKA - Yes.....I don't what came over me yesterday morning, but I asked ZONA why she was still up? I guess with me being on vacation this week, I just turn the "mother" mode on with everyone around me!!!
ZONA - So glad you are getting your rest.
TINA - I saw that race....the day Dale Earnhardt died. I think that will stick with me forever, as it was not the first time that I witnessed someone being killed on a racetrack.
MEK - From the time that I was a freshman in high school, I had a penpal from England (my 8th grade chorus teacher taught at her school and gave her my address). So when Charles and Diana got married, I received a bunch of neat memorabilia from her that you just couldn't get here in the States. Because of my English friend, I really took interest in the whole royal family. I remember the night that Princess Di died.....again being rivited to the tv for days. And her funeral.....all I can say is wow!! Very fitting for the "People's Princess".
SACBARB - I survived registration....but it was with ALL 3 kids!!! Holy crap.....spent just short of $300.00. And I haven't even gotten school supplies yet. :(
TINA - Vacay is ok.....mostly working on some projects at home, getting ready for school, and getting ready for Sam's big birthday (co-ed) on Friday. Pray for me. :P

There were a lot of sad moments on TV, but I think 911 was the saddest.
I have to agree with Tinkatia, this had been a terrible month filled with tradgedies (sp) oh well.
My SIL the one with MS broke her leg yesterday and just went up to surgery as I am typing this. I wrote a blog about it on my myspace on how it happened so you can go read it, its really a long story. They will be putting a rod in her leg from her ankle to her knee. Long story short the wheelchair lift on the van just touched her leg, and my FIL heard the bone crack. But there is also some humor to the story, because we think what happened a few days ago is what started it all.
For some reason I just feel useless today. I mean my house is clean, laundry done. But I wanted to get to school shopping for clothes and supplies, but I just don't feel like going whats wrong with me?????? She dosent have that much feeling in her legs due to the MS so they are just giving her Toridol. The doctors told my MIL if she had feeling in her leg she would be on a morphin drip. Oh I think its gonna be a SUBWAY nite. I don' even want to cook.
The neighborhood also looks so sad with my neighbors sister passing away her service is tomorrow. Maybe I'll go outside and putz
HI Jodi - I wonder if our Zona is still asleep. I hope she is resting up for her birthday. Only a couple more sleeps 'til then.
Another sad moment on TV was when Gloria lost her baby in "All in the Family". I cried so hard, I guess because I had been through that experience. It was very cathartic. It was the first time we realized Archie wasn't the heartless soul he was made out to be. He did have a softer side. The other side was such a bigot.

The nest is quiet again today. I guess everyone is getting their nests ready for winter and their little owls outfitted for school.
I just woke up but as soon as the caffeine kicks in from my diet coke I am going to work as hard as yesterday, well maybe not that hard.
I am going to start with a march.

Hey everyone! Getting ready to head out for the afternoon. Thought I would check in.
Tinka: I hope this doesn't happen often! We vote by mail here so I think they are working out the kinks in the system before Nov. When the presidential ballots come. This primary is important tho because we are picking who will be on the Nov. Ballot for Governor.
The last Gov race was very close they had if I remember right to recount all of the ballots twice. The same two people are running again this year so it could be very interesting and I am sure that they don't want anyone to file that they did not receive their ballots or be accused of ballot tampering.
I just find the whole thing odd.

Thanks for today's daily blog, that video was so special, the sesame street writers handled that so well, as for a child, death can be very confusing, I adore Big Bird! So Very Yellow!
I remember Mash being sad, but most in my memory is "Friends" I loved that show, and I knew when it was over the sitcom era, was about to die down as well, and it seems it did.. Oh, one more, When George Clooney left ER, it broke my heart, however when Julianna Margolis meets up with him by the lake, the tears flowed.. Sad and Happy!!!

Lynn - Thanks for the explanation. It sounded strange to me. Our elections are called and within a couple of months they are over and done with. I know there is a reason for the difference but I don't 'get' most of it. I just go and vote and watch the TV that night and it's over. We don't seem to get the exciting drama that Americans get. I guess we are a boring country.

Well the post office has surprised me twice in the last couple weeks. First they delivered a post card that had only my name, state and zip on it....no street as that had somehow been torn off. Then today there was a card in the mailbox from a good friend, who forgot to put a stamp on it! Will wonders never cease??

I'm back from the school open house. One of my daughter's teachers isn't going to be there for the next 3 days. Her father died unexpectantly yesterday. To make matters worse for this teacher, her mother has cancer.
Gosh, I know this sounds selfish, but I hope this doesn't affect my daughter having a good year at school. My son had this same teacher a few years ago. The teacher was going through fertility problems and was very depressed and/or grumpy all year. It really made for a bad year for all her students.
Tinka: I don't remember seeing Michael Landon on Larry King. That would've definitely made me cry.
I agree with you about Columbine. That was such a sad time. I remember Katie Couric interviewing so many of the family members of the deceased and she almost broke down and cried a few times herself.

Zona wondered where I disappeared to but I got a rather important phone call. I won't go into details but it was important.
Donna - Don't feel bad about wishing for a good year for your daughter. I feel sad for anyone going through rough times but they should take a leave of absence from school if they can't put their full attention to their job. I don't mean to sound harsh but I have seen teachers who should have gone on a LOA and the results are not favourable for the teacher or the class. One poor year for a child can really affect the next few years. I know because I have seen it.
You would have cried if you had watched Michael Landon being so brave after he got his diagnosis. I wish research would come up with some kind of cure for pancreatic cancer. Randy Pausch said it was the only cancer that they have not made any progress on in 30 years. That's not good enough.

WOW, I just watched the video for today. It made me very sad. Needless to say, I haven't watched this show for many years.
The 9/11 was probably one of the worst sad things along with Katrina and Columbine. Columbine was in our city so it even made it more real and now we live only two blocks from the school. I think of that horrible day every time I drive by it.
I will admit on the fun side of sad..I have been pretty weepy on some shows and one soap opera too! It still stands out in my mind and it was many years ago!!
I am sending good thoughts to you Renee Eve with your family and neighbor and you also Hart. Your friend will be in my prayers..and we do know that prayer works!

My only worry is how hot it's going to be in that gym where I have Latchkey. There are no windows, no AC, and we're not allowed to open the door. It has to remain locked. We have two big fans but they don't do a very good job during the afternoon session. That gym heats up like an oven all day long.

I cry a lot, so sad stuff is pretty much a nightly affair at my house. My kids laugh at me. Hey, I am an emotional wreck, what can I say!
I was at work when the planes hit on 9/11. I wasn't sad until later but I was very scared! I had a close co-worker who just had a baby. We heard that the pentagon got attacked too and though were were under attack completely. It was scary..and of course, the true tragedy hit me later in the day. :(

Hello everyone. I had a busy day today.I went to Verizon to upgrade my son & Mr Marys phones. This was 35 miles away. When I got home i found out they forgot to activate the phones and mistakenly gave the same number to both phones! I called the service dept to activate. Can you believe she asked me if i was talking on one of the non activated phones? Geesh!
I pretty much cry for anything on tv or big screen. My sad tv moments were, 9/11, Princes Diane, John Lennon, & John Ritter.
