It's in the words!

when the music starts, i then listen to the
words, and when i feel myself drawn in
by the words, i take a part of me and place
them with the words, and then it all becomes
clear and it all makes sense

this song with its words can have many
meanings and for each person the words
will mean what they feel, it will be interesting
for me to find out the meaning of the words
from different views

listen to the words, the meaning will be there,
the passion will emerge, its all in the words
so true, so real, so universal~~

and oh my, the strength in the voice, that
sings this song, is absolutely chilling!!

Enjoy!

CPGEM: I love this song. I get goosebumps when I hear k.d. lang sing it.

I think it's about a love that started out beautiful but ended up in complete ruins, and the absolute pain that love can sometimes cause. I have listened to it many times and the religious imagery fascinates me. I don't know that I've ever really 'gotten' it so much as experienced the beauty of it...if that makes any sense at all.

Thanks CPGEM for this video this morning..I'm going to go back and watch, and listen, to it again.

Good morning,

Congrats to you Zona for being first this morning.
Good to see you, Mo. and G/Moses.

Hart~Terrific blog, yesterday. Congratulations!

Carol~
Just caught-up on comments in area 51, and hope your hearing is better.

As for the song you presented this morning, I find it to be about a sad revelation about a love that could never be shared. It's a very deep love from afar, but nonetheless, kept in the soul as a oneness. The dreams are gone, and to some extent, the dreamer feels released with an understanding that it will always be unrequited. Very sad, indeed, but the awakening is a bit of a healing process, and the love will always be there. It's mostly the learning of acceptance with understanding.

My goodness, that was a little deep this morning for me to think this much.

Carol, please share with us your thoughts about Hallelajah.

Hope everyone has a wonderful sunday...

Morning all!

We seem to be on a musical adventure this weekend..How cool is that?? I loved all the stories from yesterday..

I really like k.d. Lange, but had never heard this song..Talk about a goosebump raiser!

Good morning, everyone!

I am so excited that Carol picked this song today.

I heard it one time on the radio and fell in love with it.

I never knew who the artist was and I forgot all about it.

Then when I heard it today, I fell in love with it again.

Morning Glories!

Wohoo Zona got first!!!

Wow first of all I want to say everytime I hear K D Lang sing I am amazed by the gift of her voice.

I have listened to this 3 times and I hear about three themes going on here in the words.

I hear the passion about love and about faith. Both can take you to heights that you never dreamed of and can bring you to your knees when both are tested. Love and faith to me are so intertwined.

When you fall in love you have to take that leap of faith to trust and really the same with faith.

I love this line in the song "Your faith was strong but you needed proof" it says it in a nutshell I have faith that you love me but I need proof. To me this applies to real life love and the love of your faith.

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you

These last two parts of the lyrics to me say what happened good and bad are my lesson, the lesson I needed to learn by having taken that leap of faith.

I did my best I was not trying to fool you, I thought I was there but I wasn't strong enough. So I have to learn my lesson or maybe not but in the end the experience makes me sing

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Love Faith and Personal Lessons is what this song says to me and resonates in my soul. Beautiful song and message.

But I could be wrong it could have no more meaning than I loved you it went bad and Hallelujah we split up.

What do I know?

When I first listen to a song, I never listen to the lyrics.

I tune in to the voice and the melody first.

Her powerful voice on this song just puts my shoulders at ease.

I have no idea what she is saying, yet, but her song is filled with emotions.

It also wants to make me weep.

I'm not going to read any of the comments, yet, until I listen to her lyrics more closely.

I will be back soon.

I have read the comments and wow are they eloquent. Everyone is really 'on their game' this morning. I will listen to the song after I take my babies outside. They have had their breakfast.
I don't even want to compete, however, with the deep analysis already written about this song. I can't wait to hear it.

Lynn D said...

Wow Zona and Ronnie I love your answers about how the music speaks to you!

My conclusion no matter what you hear we are all right because it is the message we need to hear. Does that make sense?

Iteach the first time I hear a song I can tell how much it moves me by the initial blending of the music. I feel it in my gut or soul. Sometimes I only hear it in the voice but often times in the back ground instruments being played.

I just can feel the passion or that it means something to person who is interpreting it. If I get any strong emotion from the song I feel that connection.

Waving a wing at MO and GM, Tinka and Scrishy!!!

Zona said...

GMOSES: Thank you..but I think I'm just grasping... ;)

RONNIE: Loved your deep thinking and take on the lyrics!

LYNND: I agree with you, there is a lot of symbolism in this song...and thus quite a few different directions it can take you.

TINKA: Good morning my pretty fair haired cybermom!!!

It brings chills to my spine!

night.owls.sb said...

zona:
I agree, the lyrics in the song can go so may ways!

scirish said...

I have often wondered what it is that makes a song "popular"? In other words, what is in that particular arrangement of words and music that appeals to sooo many people?

night.owls.sb said...

When I first heard it, I was not so enthralled by it, until I heard KDlang sing it, and then it began to make sense.

A love gone wrong, or a love that
cannot be, the love is so strong, it screams Hallelujah. Hallelujah that in one's lifetime the love was found and it was there, and the gratitude for finding such love is praised! If once in a lifetime that real love can be found, then a Hallelujah is in order, as its a gift, a sort of praise, for love!

If it is to be or not, Hallelujah that one felt it!!

grandma moses said...

Good morning lynn d, iteach, tinka, ronnie, scirsh and carol!
Carol, what do you think it means?

There is a verse missing before the last verse ~
Well there was a time when you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do you?
And remember when I moved in you?
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Maybe it is about a perfect love (compared to holy dove) in the writer's mind, but the person sung to has hung a "flag on a marble arch". Now all the singer learned from love was competition ~ "learned to shoot before someone outdrew you"

Does this confuse things further?

night.owls.sb said...

Scirish,
I have always wondered the same, for me its the words, they some how have to mean something to me, and then of course the arrangement! It's really in the words for me.

As as you all know I love words, and how they flow, how they make us who we are and what we believe. I think all of us here love words, we are bloggers, and our words are so strong! Each one of us brings a msg to another by our words. When I look at a comment, I usually know who wrote it by the words, at times I don't even have to look at the name. The words tell me everything.

In "real" life how many times have you and a close friend/relative put something in words, we usually talk, and yes there is eye contact, however the words are not in front of us, we can search their eyes for meaning, but when you see words the meaning is there...

It's all in the words!

night.owls.sb said...

gmoses:
When I was researching this song last nite, I found something (I think Wiki) that stated some believe it was about a orgasm between two partners, and it seems the verse you posted could mean just that.

Many Many meanings...

I am not even going to try and analyze the words to this beautiful song. I just closed my eyes and drank in the beauty of it, twice. I may listen to it again. It brings a feeling of peace over me that I have been missing all week.
The song took me back to 15 years ago when my sister and I watched k.d. Lang sing live in Victoria. We were enthralled by her music and completely captivated by her as a person. She was born in a small town in Alberta and Canadians are very proud of our k.d. Lang. She can melt your heart.

I agree with Tinka, we Canadians are very proud of K.D. Lang. Her voice is so flawless and she shows so much passion when she sings a song like this. I am probably in the minority, but I don't always pay attention to the lyrics. For me the combination of sounds, from the music and the singer, is what I listen to. If that combination is off it doesn't matter what the lyrics are, cause you've already lost me.

Happy Sunday Owls! Can you believe I slept until almost noon?! I HAVE to start getting more sleep during the week! It's almost impossible though!

Well, first of all, I want to thank you all for being so kind yesterday about my first blog. But I also want to thank you for not correcting me about the date. (Although I don't mind being corrected at all.) At one point yesterday, I mentioned the date as Aug. 25th. Well, I didn't have my glasses on and when I glanced at the calendar on the wall, 23 looked like 25. Another sign of getting old. :(

Carol: I LOVE that song!!!! I have had it as my MySpace song several times, but I usually use the version by the wonderful Jeff Buckley, and sometimes by Rufus Wainwright. I've never heard K.D. Lang sing it, but she does an outstanding job with it! It's hauntingly beautiful.

Congrats on first Zona!
Off to read more comments!

RonnieGirl said...

G/Moses, The missing verse you wrote adds more to this song. And Carol, your thought about an orgasm between two people sounds like it might be the 'Hallelajah Moment' that is shared by two people so much in love. THAT moment is the unity of two souls combining into one,and not shared.
It's not about sex, but about becoming one, as if there is noone else in the universe.

Actually, I really like what Lynn said.....
"But I could be wrong it could have no more meaning than I loved you it went bad and Hallelujah we split up."

First, John Osteen on television, and then sharing what orgasm means to me. It's cold shower time and another 'Hail Mary'.

bbl...maybe

Have Mercy.....

Happy Sunday Morning Owls.

Carol, I love k.d.lang's version of this song, although I have never listened to the words as carefully as I did today. It makes me sad in a way, but I love the melody. I think it's about a love that tried to be, but just wasn't. It's probably much deeper than that, and I just didn't get it.

I am off to the State Fair today. I can't wait to read all the comments and everyone's take on the lyric when I get back.

Have a great day everyone. Rushing out now.

Carol, I love this song--actually had it as my ringtone for awhile. I love kd lang's version of it--she's amazing! I'm still stuck on Jeff Buckley's version though--it was his first #1 hit (posthumously)in March 2008 after Jason Castro sang it on American Idol. Jeff Buckley had a promising career when he drowned in 1997.

Have a good day, all!

whabbear said...

I'll have to listen to the lyrics again. I interpreted it as a love that KD thought would have to go unrequited until she saw the (gay rainbow) flag up, and realized that the object of her dreams and her desires WAS attainable!

Hallelajah!

Forgot to say I love Jason Castro's version, too! He's such a cutie!

Mornin', Owls!

ZonaBaby Congrats on #1 today. Is hubby still vacuuming the bed or did you distract him?

Carol I love kd lang's version of this song. She has the most beautiful and powerful voice of any female artist, IMHO.

In looking up the lyrics, I see that this song was written by Leonard Cohen and all the sites listing his lyrics, show a shorter version than the different ones when sung by various artists. It's as if each artist wanted to put their on spin on what they thought the song meant.

Here are the original Leonard Cohen lyrics:

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

One of my favorite songs. If Cohen himself complained he would never finish it, after writing 80 verses and discarding most of them, I'm happy to just enjoy the 'goosebumps' it delivers each time I hear it, especially by k.d. lang.

This is a great article, for those who can't get enough:

Hallelujah!

Bon'O said...

Just a theory....wonder if the sexual interpretation of the lyrics is so difficult because it's NOT in the words?? I've always been intrigued by the expression "Them that talk, don't DO. Them that do, don't TALK."

oh, and not to change the subject, but was yesterday not a fantastic one for TEAM U.S.A.??? WOW, the Relays and the Reddeem Team rocked!

Thanks Carol for the JBJ version. I still prefer kd lang. I am not a religious person so I hope I don't offend anyone here. My overall impression of the song is that although the singer is not religious, there were times with his lover that his feelings were so intense and profound as to feel spiritual in nature. Although the relationship didn't endure, he still honors and reveres those feelings with "Hallelujah".

RonnieGirl said...

Bon'o: I liked that link you posted. Funny, right before I read your comment, I played the song again. My daughter heard it and said, "Hey, that song was on Shrek!" I remembered that, in fact, it was! So I looked it up on Amazon.com. That article stated that Rufus Wainwright sang it on Shrek, but Amazon says it was John Cale. I wonder which is correct, because I can't remember?

I haven't been back on here in a while because my mom had to go to the ER this afternoon.

My husband took her because he knows everyone there and he knew he could get her seen and treated quickly. Sure enough, he did! She was in and out of there in an hour.

She's been having pains up and down her right leg, from her hip down. It was so bad last night that she couldn't sleep and it was getting worse today. I was afraid it might be a blood clot and told her she'd better not wait until morning to call her doctor.

So she went to the ER. They took x-rays but couldn't do a doppler study because our stupid, little hospital had no one there to do it today. They wanted to keep her overnight but she refused. She said it would upset my dad too much to leave him overnight. I would've gone in to stay with him but she wouldn't hear of it.

They gave her a shot in her stomach, in case it is a clot. They gave her pain meds and she has to go back in the morning for blood work and the doppler. I hope everything will be okay.

I will just work my morning shift from 6am - 8:30 and then not work during the day until 3pm, when I have to be back at Latchkey. I can be with her during the day.

They did find that she has degenerative disc disease in her back. That could be causing the pain in her hip and down her leg. Who knows?

Just_Lin said...

Hi Ronnie! Been fishing by any chance? :)

I don't think I ever really "heard" the lyrics of this song until the first time I heard kd lang sing it. There is something so pure about her singing that makes these lyrics nearly break my heart.
