Beginning with Books

Books. I love finding that book that has to be read to the very end as soon as it is begun. What a treasure a good book truly is. I have always loved a great story. For as long as I can remember, books have been a big part of my life. My mom read at bedtime – she loved to read Black Beauty, Little Women, and Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses. My brothers read to me when I couldn’t read yet. We were limited to one hour of television a day and were encouraged to read instead of watching t.v. I remember Clifford the Big Red Dog and all of Dr. Seuss’s books as being much loved. The Bobbsey Twins was the first series I became obsessed with. Then all of the Little House on the Prairie books, soon followed by all of the Anne of Green Gables books. All my friends loved Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, but I never did.
I can see patterns in what I liked then having crossed over to what I like now. I am not big on mysteries or fantasy but love stories about people and relationships. We have talked a lot here on the blog about books we have loved as adults, but what did you love to read as a child? What were your favourites? Are they the same genre of books that you enjoy now? If you have children, did you share the books that you loved as a child with them?
I remember when Dr. Seuss died. Jesse Jackson paid tribute to him on Saturday Night Live by reading a favourite!

MEK, LOL I think you are right. Jodi, I remember having a teen slumber party, and it was coed until the girls had to leave. Those boys never did get to sleep. I was up all night listening to them. They were worse gossips than girls. BTW, I learned a LOT that night.

For dinner I made a small filet mignon, sauteed mushrooms, creamy cucumbers and sliced tomato that actually tasted like a real tomato. It was yummy.
Hi MEK. Your sister had it right, I am Lustlin about now. LOL
MEK - No guarding the tent tonight....they've been banished to Sam's room. All five of them. The Ho ran off and we couldn't find her AND trashed my porch. Thinks it's real funny to have a food fight out there. I'm so pissed I'm shaking. Never again!!

JODI-party-gone-wild-in-WESconsin...good thing you have a drink in your hand. Is this girl (ho) that was sent home, an invited guest to the party or someone that just dropped by? Good thing you brought the girls inside because you can count on the fact that SHIRLEY gave the boys balloons. One other thing JODI, I know you didn't have time to cheer for your new team tonight so we just gave up the win the GB..you know...just to be nice since they were visiting our town!!
BEAR: I can be ant the convention carrying the OWL sign and causing a ruckus but I can't put any names besides OWL on it or it wouldn't be too fair. Now, I was hoping you could fly down to MN the following week and carry our sign at the next convention..NO NAMES!!
ZONA must be plum tuckered out today or still celebrating!! Oh yea, her husband is off today so they are probably swimming themselves to a frenzy!!
JUSTLIN: You cook yummy for yourself. I don't cook that well for two of us. We may be moving in with you for meals!! BTW, I showed my granddaughter the picture you sent her and she laughed!
TOTD: I have always enjoyed reading. I don't remember anyone reading to me as a child but I sure remember having all the books. I loved the Bobsey Twins. I enjoy a good mystery the most now. It just seems like I don't have time to read and I have no idea what I do with my time!
I am still at my daughters and today was one of her best days. We go to the doctor on Monday and then if all goes well, I will be going home to my quiet little house with only two of us there and no stairs! Today the weather was so nice that Tammy and I sat on the porch for three hours so the kids could ride bikes in the front...now that was nice!

ITEACH: Good luck to your husband on his job search. Sounds like things are looking up!
SCRISH: Sorry your mom isn't happy right now. I went through a lot of the same with my mom but she was going (by her choice) to assisted living and I picked the place. She eventually liked her own place there and the extra help she needed but it took awhile. Change is hard for a lot of us but I do know how it can make you feel when you are trying so hard. Have faith as it will get better! Hugs to you.
Well, this is getting pretty boring. I didn't know the party was over as soon as I walked in the room. I think I will play the song on our "system" here at the nest, "I Think I'm Alone Now"(anyone want to dance)? I guess this would be the time to pick up one of those books I never have time to read.
Hi Dianne! Sitting on the front porch, watching the kids for 3 hours sounds very relaxing and nice.
After my husband died, I was feeling so low all the time that I felt a need to be kind to myself. Trying to cook relatively healthy meals for myself was my way of doing that.
Let me know if the granddaughter is looking for more cowboy pictures.
IBB: I am so sorry! The first time was irritating, the second... unforgivable!
It's all Bebbi's fault... I was so startled by her shout out that I lost all bowel control.
MEK: We had a delicious roast chicken from Safeway, fabulous baked potato with butter, sour cream, and pepper, and a tossed salad complete with heirloom tomato slices, avocado, and chopped hard boiled eggs!

Dianne: You want me to go to a REPUBLICAN convention?
LOL! Only if you print up about 10,000 copies of my reasons why I can't vote for McCain!
Bear Dianne told us earlier that at the DNC one of the specialty foods is going to be chocolate covered fried bacon. This is why I'm a Democrat! LOL
BEAR: It is for the sake of our OWLS you would be going...you know just to advertise and get your picture on TV when you are demonstrating (before the arrest)! HMMMM, I thought you were a do or die Republican..must have gotten confused :)

JODI: Some day in the future you will be over at Sam's for your granddaughters sleep-over and she will be pacing and you will be relaxing with a glass of wine and reminding her about her party. It really does happen eventually!
SACBARB: My husband keeps telling me to stay as long as I want. I think he is using these days as a "vacation", although, I can't imagine why! :)

Custard happens to be Republican (I know!) but says he'll probably have to vote Democrat this year. Actually, he's like me and votes more for the person, not the party.
