Ouch!

by Zona

Not many statements can make me stop harvesting my farm on FaceBook..."Honey...don't panic...I cut off my finger.." however, would be one that could. It was 3:45am on a Sunday morning when my husband said these words to me. Of course, the best way to get me to freak is to tell me not to….works every time. I jumped up leaving my pumpkins in the fields, ran down the hall, bounced off the door jamb as I turned the corner and yelled "WHAT!!??!!" Mr Z. was in the kitchen. "Don't come in here!!" he yelled over his shoulder. Too late! I saw the mangled, bloody mess that used to be his pinky finger. Even in my attempt to stay calm, I heard myself repeat "Oh my God! Oh my God!" Mr Z said, "There's a lot of blood! Call 911!!" "What the hell happened??" I asked. He explained about the table, how it fell on his hand and how when he pulled back because of the pain, a third of his finger was yanked off. "Oh my God! Oh my God!" Somehow I got to the phone and called 911. The operator told me to get the finger and put it in ice cold water. WHAT?!?!! I repeated these instructions to my husband and before I could put down the phone, he was out in the garage looking for his missing knuckle and nail. I grabbed a small tupperware container (finally found a use for the damn thing) and filled it with ice water just as Mr Z brought in the glove he had been wearing. He turned it over and let the finger fall out into the water. There is something completely surreal about seeing part of a finger that you recognize floating in a dish. You know it shouldn't be there. Very weird!!

The paramedics arrived, bandaged up his hand, and although we wanted to go to the big hospital downtown, they advised us to go to the one closest to us which is less than 10 minutes away. We arrived there carrying the container with his finger within about 30 minutes of the accident. I have to stop here. I hate Emergency Rooms. I know that the doctors and nurses there save lives, but no matter what injury or sickness you go in for, you can count on being there for at least 3 hours and when you hurt or feel like crap, that's just way too long. Mr Z was admitted immediately. Well, as soon as I paid the $200 co-pay, that is. A doctor came into the room an hour later, shot Novocain into Mr Z's finger, and assessed the injury. She ordered x-rays, looked at the floating finger, and left. About 90 minutes later, she came back and informed us that they couldn't help us. They didn't have a hand doctor on staff. We'd have to go to the downtown hospital about 5 miles away. Did they not know this when we walked in the door almost three hours ago? Couldn't they have directed us to the other hospital immediately? Arrrghh! X-rays and floating finger in hand, we left.

Once again, Mr Z was admitted into the ER immediately, no wait. To my surprise however, we had to pay another $200 co-pay. I questioned this as he was just being transferred. They wouldn't budge. After we got in the room, which contained 2 recliners but strangely no bed, a nurse came in, started an IV line and hung an antibiotic drip. Except to take down the empty fluid bag, no one else walked into that room for 5 hours. I would occasionally go out to the nurse's station to ask if the doctor knew Mr Z was there and was told that of course he did. Sometime after noon, a nurse walked in with a gown for Mr Z and a bed was wheeled up. In a bright and cheery voice she told him, "You're going upstairs for surgery!!" WHAT??!! We hadn't even talked to a doctor! She assured us as she handed me the floating finger which was looking a little pruney by now, that we would talk to someone upstairs in pre-op. Although the doctors and nurses didn't seem to be in a hurry, the orderly that took Mr Z upstairs did. She literally ran through the corridors. I sure was glad I brought my inhaler. ijs! From the time we crossed the finish line into pre-op, until the actual surgery, it was another 3 hour wait. Poor Mr Z. After waiting 12 hours to hear the fate of his finger, the surgeon finally came in 15 minutes before the operation, took one look at the floating finger and unceremoniously threw it away. "It's been sitting around too long," he said. I wanted to kick him in the ankle.

The surgery went well. The doctor said he had to remove the nail bed or Mr. Z would have had something akin to an eagle talon growing out from the stump of his finger. Interesting…but not entirely desirable. Monday was his first follow up appointment and we were shocked to see close to 75 people waiting in the office when we got there. We found a small section of the wall to lean on and settled in for what turned out to be an almost 3 hour wait. They finally called him back and the bandage was removed. The word meat grinder comes to mind. The doctor popped in for about 5 minutes to say the finger looked like it was healing nicely and that the stitches would probably be removed in a week. He took a couple pictures for his carnage scrapbook and then he was gone like the wind. Mr. Z then surprised me by taking out his cell phone and snapping away. I asked him what he was doing. He smiled, "Taking pictures for your blog!" Aren't you glad I said, “No thank you?” :D

Good morning to Tina (Yay, #1) & Jodi!

Zona, I know the Great Pinky Tragedy isn't funny. But the way you tell the story brings humor to it. You and Mr. Z are both troopers.

Oh, Jodi... I am happy to know you're mending well. Kudos to you for working hard to get your arm back.

Morning Glories, and Tina!

Sure I click on the blog and bam I get the finger! Figures with this crowd.

Zona all I can say is freaking OUCH! I think I would have kicked a few nurses and then visualized kicking that doctor in the nuts! I'm sorry to just throw the damn finger away and say it had been to long, WTF???? This guys bedside manner is a bit lacking.

PS tell Mr. Z it would have been an Owl Talon. Eagle talon my ass! He is one of ours and we would have loved him any way. Just think of the money we would have made showing him off. :) imjs

Thank you for not posting the unbandaged finger. I don't think my cawfee would have stayed down this morning.

Have to get back to my farms. Another busy scheduled day today.

Waving a Hodi! Have a beer for me and hug goldie! Oh and don't step on her foot.

Hi Bon!

Zona: Ouch..interesting blog. It made me feel sad that they couldn't save the finger. That is ridiculous they wouldn't send you where you needed to go.

I hope everyone has a great day. I am packing for Flo-rida!

Just got off the phone with my Aunt Jane. Evidentally my Grandma Jacobson is not doing well. She is now bedridden with a horrible bed sore and is failing fast. Please say a prayer that she will be at peace soon.

Good Morning Hooters!

Congrats on 1st "I'm Pretty"

Zona- I must say you have a way with words. I laughed at your blog even if the story wasn't really a funny subject!

When #2 son had just turned 4, he was sitting in the yard watching his brother and friends play baseball. His brother hit a foul ball and clobbered him in the eye. OMG- so off we dash to the hospital. We arrive to find a full emergency room lobby. Well the LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGgg and the short of it was it was 4 hours before we saw a dr.

When the dr. finally came in, he said to me "good thing you got him right here- this kind of injury could have caused him to lose his sight in that eye". I really wanted to strangle him. HELLO- I got him here 4 frigging hours ago!!! geez

Meeting Jodi and so looking forward to it. Some of you Owls are going to be buying her lunch today... (wink, wink).

Tonight I am going to a fancy/schmancy dinner and awards banquet for Mr. Goldies work.
(the not martial arts one)

Have a great day eveyone.

Oh my.. that is one big band aid.. Poor Mr Z I feel bad he lost part of his finger, I had thought they had saved it.. I gonna tell ya, I cracked up @ "finally found a use for that damn thing" LMAO..

I hate emergency rooms as well, you do nothing but wait, and the treatment is awful.. I would have been really pissed if I had to pay the $200.00 copay again.. and why is the copay so high?? My copay is $50.00 this damn health insurance, pisses me off.. People are broke as soon as they walk into a hospital..

Oh my, It is such a shame that doctors can't spend time with patients anymore.. If I have ever walked into the waiting room, I would have walked out immed.. Just Terrible..

What I love about this blog is, you made a awful experience into a funny episode of Seinfeld.. Great writing, I felt drawn in the whole time.. Actually I could have used another paragraph, I was hoping for some nite swimming.. :O)

Lots of Smiles to you and Mr Z..

Great Blog!

Good Morning....

ya most men would have said "I CUT MY HAND OFF!!"

its too bad that his finger wasn't reattached....or that doctors fiddled and farted around until it was to late!

Maybe you should talk to your Insurance people about the double co-pay..... that doesn't sound right at all..

That would be a good "tupperware" party story for yet another use for the container. Perhaps you could contact Tupperware with your story and who knows where that could go....remember Ross and his squash...lol

I would have liked to see a pic of the floating finger...I can't believe you didn't photograph that.

And if Doctor removed the nail bed nothing should grow there...must less an "eagle like" talon!!

One question....we yall at Tina or Lynns Medical Mayhem Hospital?? And was the transfer from one of those to the other? That might explain the double co-pay. And if you were at these facilities.....Mr. Z is lucky he didn't get a nipple removed.....they do a lot of those.......

Zona said...

Good Afternoon!

TINA: Mr Z said to tell you IT DID!! ;)

JODI: The first hospital told us they thought the finger was too damaged for reattachment..but just in case..to take the floating finger with us. After surgery, the surgeon confirmed that the blood vessels were crushed..and reattachment would not have worked.

BONACHI: He agrees with JODI's philosophy..keep going..push through the pain..you'll heal faster.

LYNN: If you ever change your mind..I can send you a picture! ;)

BEBBI: I was upset because he had to wait that much longer for treatment..and he was in so much pain.

GOLDIE: I have never understood the wait in the ER..you wait in the lobby..you wait in the back..you wait and wait and wait..even when it's not crowded..drives me bananas.

CAROL: The reason the co-pay is so high is that they want us to go to Urgent Care..that co-pay is only $30. When it's 3am though..you don't have much of a choice but the ER. It's wrong that they kinda punished us for going there.

LOL @ nite swimming.. ;)

DEEDEE: I called the insurance company the next day..basically they said "Sorry..pay up!"

I ALMOST took a picture of the floating finger..Mr Z ixnayed the idea.

Now that I think about it..it did remind me of Hospital Mayhem!

Oh Kathy....picture please!!! Check your real email......

Zona. That was a great blog! I had to laugh @ the nurse crossing the finish line. I hope you will refrain from sending DeeDee a finger pic as she will probably use it as an avatar. LOL.

I'm sitting at the hairdresser's with dye on my hair so will bbl.

Just_Lin said...

Jodi. I'm glad you and Goldie had fun at lunch. Beer would make meneed a nap, too.

ZONA - What an ordeal. Did they just ignore the fact that one cannot just leave a body part floating on ice for hours? If there is ever a next time maybe you could pull a Shirley Mcclain in "Terms of Endearment" in the scene at the nurses desk.

Do you eat out of dog bowls at the Great Dane?

Dianne/Denver said...

Ouchy...poor MrZ. I hope you have been taking good care of him. You are more of a woman that I am if you are changing bandages...I would be throwing up on his hand if I had to do that. I wonder how they put bodies on ice and they seem to last....must be a whole different thing! :)

We are off to GD last basketball game and then to their awards dinner. It's been a busy day and I went to bed so darn late and only got four hours sleep. This night owl is tired.

J/L: I wanted to remind you that you can join FB to see pictures, do messages, find people and NOT FARM. Now, I am not quite sure why a person would not want to farm but seriously, it is a fun site to be on and you would be surprised the people that will find you and you just catch up with..I have heard from some school friends that I haven't even thought about in 45 years. It's been fun.

JODI AND GOLDIE: Glad you had a good lunch and that it was a treated lunch too...makes it even more fun. Thanks for the picture.

Ok, have to go and get ready to go out. Everyone have a good night and I will BBL

TINA: Check your email I sent you the blog and on a second email the video. Bye

goldie said...

Just to clarify- Jodi's lunch was paid for by the owls (we went over budget with that big ass beer of hers) LOL- I paid for my own!

Ok, off to dinner/awards banquet with Mr. Goldie. Went to the Clinique counter and had them do make-up and I...omg, MR. Goldie just came down stairs in his suit and holy shit I could just take him now- WAIT A minute, back to reality. Anyway- off we go.... Have a good night Hooters!!!

Zona said...

DEEDEE: The subject line of that email worries me.. ;)

J/LIN: FaceBook! :D

JODI & CAROL: That bandage is my handywork..I am definitely NOT nurse material! When he came out of surgery he had a bandage with smiley faces all over it..talk about adding insult to injury! ;)

LANI: LOL..I thought about scene in Terms of Endearment while we were sitting in the 2nd hospital ER for over 5 hours!

DIANNE: He's being spoiled rotten..ijs..in fact I'm off to give him a back massage now..sheesh..

GOLDIE: Sounds like you're the one that's going to be having a good night!! :D

Tina~in_ut said...

well you know what massages lead to!!!~ ijs~

Happy Friday Owls.

Zona, I'm so sorry I am so late in reading your blog. I know we talked about Mr. Z's injury but reading the print version just brings up some disturbing visuals. You really did a good job describing the whole situation and injecting humor, too.
And could you have bandaged it any BIGGER? ijs :)

I've spent many hours (hundreds really) in the ER and have seen some interesting injuries raising 4 boys (three I gave birth to and one I married), but nothing compares to what Mr. Z did. I'm not sure I would have reacted as calmly as you did.

I'm glad he is healing well and I'm sure he will be happy when the stitches are removed.

sacBarb said...

Tina, isn't today your day off? And you got up early so you could be first?? That's real dedication!

Jodi, Glad you are doing so well with your broken wing. I'll keep Grandma Jacobson and your family in my prayers.

Waving a wing to all the other Owls. My Uncle will be here tonight and I still have cards to finish.

Guess most of the "night" owls are in bed except maybe J/L, TINA AND ZONA (maybe). I think our night owls are turning into evening owls.

Well, my GD's team lost their last game...but they each received a very nice trophy and enjoyed the night and pizza. It is the first piece of pizza I have eaten since August. I don't think I missed it as much as I thought I did.

TINA: I hope you received my blog as I didn't see a note from you.

Good night owls...as I need to get some sleep tonight as I have an early day tomorrow and late night.

Just_Lin said...

Dianne Congrats to your GD. I haven't had pizza in quite a while and it sure sounds tasty. Sweet dreams.

Hi Diane, nite Diane :)
I just stopped in to get grossed out lol!

Zona, I felt so bad for Mr Z going through all that mess! I can't believe the emergency wards don't have a better triage system.
I had to be hospitalized in Las Vegas on one of our trips. The waiting room was packed. I was in horrible pain. My hubby filled out the papers and bam, we were escorted onto a room and had a Dr checking me out. I think my BCBS insurance card had something to do with it.I think that sucks, but I was a mess and was glad to go to the head of the line. I was in the hospital the whole vacation days! Trust me, you don't want to know why lol!

Time for bed. I was busy all day and am pooped!
Goodnite all z-z-z-z-z

BARB - Thanks.....she is so very weak. She did recognize me though, so that was nice. It's just so sad to see her health decline so fast.

SLIN - Good morning pretty lady!!

GOLDIE - I'm sure you looked amazing last night!! LMBO on my "big ass" beer!!! Next time it's on me!!! ♥
