An Absolute Disgrace....

Yesterday at my church, a nun was attacked by an intruder. I am sick over this and can't seem to shake it. I know my church is not in the best area of Newark, but that is certainly not an excuse for such measures. My parents grew up in this area (they both received all their sacraments at this church, as well as the sacrament of marriage) but with time it has changed. I have called this church my home for several years now and most of the parishioners (who have since moved to other areas of NJ) have never forgotten their childhood parish. They continue to attend the services. When attending this church, I am very careful where I park and usually do not go there at night unless I am accompanied.

Part of the article in our local newspaper:

At about 11 a.m., Sister Obiama was doing work in her convent cell at St. Lucy’s Parish when she heard a noise, said Jim Goodness, spokesperson for the Newark Archdiocese. She got up to investigate and discovered a man inside the nunnery.

The assailant repeatedly punched and kicked the 55-year-old nun and stole a laptop before running off from the parish, a complex of buildings made up of the church, a rectory, and the convent on Amity Place in the Central Ward, said Rich Wohltman, the church sexton.

Sister Obiama came away from the attack with a large knot on the side of her head. She was sent to a local hospital and was expected to be released soon, Goodness said.

"She is being evaluated and we’re very hopeful what harm was done is very superficial," he said.

No arrests have been made in the case and her attacker remains unidentified, said Detective Josephine Santaniello, police spokeswoman.

I read the part where she was punched and kicked several times and my stomach turns. How could anyone do such harm to a nun. Actually to anyone. I just think my mind can't wrap around the thought of harming a nun.

Sal and I do all the travel arrangements for the nuns of St Lucy's. We have spoken to Sister Obiama on several occasions. She is very sweet and my heart is broken for her. I know from the article she will be alright and we will reach out to her superior Sister Henrietta to see if there is anything we can do.

I know the economic state is not the best and I also know many don't have jobs. But damn it, hurting the helpless is not the answer for a quick buck. Own up to yourself, and try to do the best with what you have. This simple sentence should have been instilled into this thoughtless thug by his/her parents. So shame on them and their elders. Just so senseless.

CAROL: How awful!! I don't care what the economic times are like..there is no excuse for hurting anyone like this! I had the same sick feeling when I read that a nun was attacked. I'm having trouble understanding the world we live in anymore..and that makes me very sad.

I hope Sister Obiama will make a quick and complete recovery. My prayers are with her.

Morning Glories!

Good Morning to the most beautiful Zona!

Carol I am just sitting here shaking my head. I can't guess why anyone attacks anyone, but there is a part of me lately that keeps thinking that if the economy does not get better soon we may see more of this and other beyond desperate and criminal acts. I hope not but it is in the back of my mind.

I keep thinking that if we did not have the food bank in our small town what would happen? As people get more desperate.....I worry.

I will send up prayers for Sister Obiama. This is just to sad for words.

Maybe the assailant was an addict. Maybe the assailants parents were addicts. A decent laptop might get you $50 to $100 on the street.

The fact that this happened to a nun is not surprising to me. They make easy targets and an addict will beat his Mother up for drugs..

But if it is money or computers that you want...take them....there is usually no resistance so why physically harm someone?

Drugs.

I think that Sister Obiama was fortunate that she wasn't brutally beaten or raped...or worse. She will be ok and probably has already forgiven her attacker and is praying for him.

Carol. This is such a sad incident. As DeeDee said, it is fortunate that she wasn't injured even worse. I also agree that drugs are probably at the root of it. Maybe this incident will help rally the community to come together and try to make things better in their neighborhoods.

A thug doesn't have a conscience. It doesn't matter what sort of person their victim is. Be it a nun, priest, child or woman.

People like this should be sentenced to death. Not in 10 years; a week at the most. I don't like supporting these sub-human species. Better to get rid of them and hopefully improve the gene pool.

I like the Texas moto: You kill one of us, we kill you back.

Happy Friday Owls.

OMG Carol, How awful that someone would break into a convent and attack a nun. Breaking into any place is bad, but breaking into a holy place and hurting a nun is despicable. I wouldn't want to have his Karma.

Zona, Yay!! You are the prettiest today.

DeeDee, I'm sure she has forgiven him and is praying for him. We should take her example and pray for him too. Although my prayer is that he will be caught and punished severely.

J/L, I hope you have recovered from the broccoli caper yesterday.

Lynn, I worry too about people getting more desperate. It is a very scary time.

Bonachichi, I hope you are healing OK.

Waving a wing to all the other Owls. I hope everyone is having a good day.

DeeDee I'm rather concerned about you. Bonachichi was hit by a van, I fell in my kitchen, yet you are the one who has lost her body. Plus, is that 5 o'clock shadow I see?

Carol: Really sad blog today. I hope they catch the person who did that horrible crime.

Zona: Congrats on first and good to see you again.

bonachichi said...

Well, Tina and DeeDee sent me a care package to help me feel better about carelessly walking behind a van. It was a white powdery substance and they said to treat it like nose spray.

I did, but it had absolutely no effect at all. I waited for half an hour during which time I cleaned the kitchen and bathrooms, assembled a new BBQ grill and fixed my lawnmower. I am contemplating installing a doggie-door, but can't find my jig-saw. I am still waiting for the magical effects. Maybe it was powdered sugar, I don't know.

bonachichi: LOL That must be some pretty awesome powdered sugar!

Afternoon Glories!

Just checking in. It has been another long day. I tell you I will no more about walkin refrigeration repair than I will ever freaking want to know.

Just_Lin said...

SacBarb I'm still suffering from broccoli-itis. It's been raining here all day. How is it up there?

Zona said...

SACBARB: I love your prayer!

BONACHI: I'm kinda glad you can't find your jig-saw..ijs. How are you feeling today..I mean now that TINA and DEEDEE's "gift" has worn off??

DEEDEE: Groovy background ;) I can't quite make out the earrings though..what are they?

J/LIN: It's sad to think that even churches may need to think about getting security people. Hope you're not hurting as much this afternoon.

BEBBI: I don't know if I ever told you, but I really like your Fun In the Sun pic!

LYNN: It was gorgeous here today..I sat outside and soaked up a butt load of Vitamin D! :D

sacBarb said...

J/L, It's raining here too. I think it's supposed to stop by Sunday.

Bebbilane said...

Thanks Zona! :)

Carol: Your story reminded me of the 80 year old (or so) lady who beat up an attacker. They had it on video. IT's been a while back..do you remember that? I love stories like that..where the unexpected happens and the bad guys gets it BAD.

I've gotta run.....but i swear J/L said she has broccoli tits!!!~

Zona, that's very sweet of you to ask after my well-being. I'm sure I've mentioned before that as of a few months ago, I've broken 40 bones in 10 years. This makes it 42.

I learned a long time ago to just roll with the punches. If you're determined, you can accomplish just about anything. I've been busier work-wise this week than I've been in a long time. Moaning and groaning gets me nowhere, so I just suck it up. My "hurts" pale in comparison to some other "hurts" I've seen. How can I complain?

Bebbilane said...

42 bones! OUCH! I haven't broken 1~! KNock on wood. I was in a really bad car wreck when I was 18 and had internal damage but never broke a bone. That was lucky. Glad you are hanging in there.

CAROL: Very sad story. I know most of the Catholic churches are locked when a mass isn't going on anymore. I remember with my dad as a child stopping at church during the day to "make a visit". It is pretty sad thing.

I am excited about how many people are looking like we might all meet soon...finally.

CONGRATS on first ZONA. You have Vit D in your butt? Well, I had a shot of B-12 today on my butt...is that the same thing?

I have to run but hope J/L and BONACHICHI are both on the mend. My cousin is just hitting town for the weekend.

On my way out the door again. A friend of mine is doing Karaoke and I promised to be there.
Carol, I was sickened when I read your blog! I hope his karmer catches up with him!
A man here in Mich was sentenced the other day to 90 yrs for beating up an old lady, tying her up and trying to make her give up her ATM card Number. She recovered and was able to testify against the man. Also 3 woman and a man were sentenced today for beating up and robbing and elderly woman. She later died! I think she had about $20 on her! Too depressing!

Have a great week end everyone!

Zona :) such a beauty today!

Hi Everyone..

Happy 1 Zona!!!!

Thanks for the comments on the blog, you are all so insightful.. I agree, a thug has no conscience, so it does not matter who they are beating up. And it prob was for money for drugs.

I have good news, we spoke with Sister Obiama today, she is home, and doing well, she is a little shaken up, but she said with time she will be fine.. all he took was her laptop.

This is what we know, a Caucasian male was hanging around the back of the church asking for money, some gave him money and the church offered him some food.. The sexton asked him to move along after he was fed. And that was the last they saw of him, next they found the Sister beaten. On the surveillance vid, the sexton and the sister (lol sounds like they are a couple, oops sorry its lent) identified him.. he is still at large, but I am confident they will find him..

So much of what happens in our communities is very depressing, I agree..

Tomorrow here in NJ, is rain and wind all day.. that is depressing as well..

I so need the sun..

I hope its sunny in Chicago in May, cause we all can use it..

Good night, HOoters. I'm going to take some arthirtis strength Tylenol and put myself to bed. I am so whiney today, it's pathetic. Obviously I don't have the fortitude that Bonachichi has.

Bonachichi I hope you are able to rest comfortably. Well, as comfortably as possible with two casts.
