Who have you found on facebook?

by Jodi

I've been on Facebook over a year now. I was wary at first, but it has been a great thing!! Last year it was a great tool in helping to find classmates for our 25th Class Reunion. I've reconnected with 3 of the foreign exchange students I was friends with and never thought I would "talk to" again. Nuria is from Spain, Liana is from Honduras, and Belinda is from Australia.

Recently I reconnected with my cousin Karen. Her Dad and mine are brothers. I don't think I had seen her since her Mother's funeral over 7 years ago. She only lives in Madison, but somehow we just don't get together with that side of the family as we should. Imagine my surprise when she and my Uncle showed up for my Grandma's funeral. When I thanked her, she said that she wouldn't be anywhere else. ♥

On Tuesday I thought I would take a chance and look up my pen pal from high school. You remember those. Someone you would actually write letters to and share everything with? The summer after my 8th grade year my music teacher traveled to and taught in England. Imagine my surprise when I got a letter from a girl about my own age. I was fascinated with Ann and her family. I still have some of the things she sent me the summer that Charles and Diana got married. Things that you couldn't get here!!! As I typed her name into the search bar on Facebook I truly didn't expect to find her. I got 43 people results....maybe just maybe she'll have a picture that I recognize. And she did!!! I messaged her immediately and she wrote back. Never in my wildest imagination did I think I would ever be able to reconnect with her again.

Who have you found of Facebook? It really is a small world after all.

Morning Glories!

BAMM! Back at you Beautiful!

Jodi funny I was thinking about this the other day. So far I have not connected with anyone from High School as I have mixed feelings about that. I have some relatives on my page but really only FB with them once in awhile. Maybe because, one I was never close to them or 2 because a few are the family trouble makers. I sometimes think they are just trolling for family gossip and so I share very little on FB. Sad really.

I think it is great that you have found people in your life you wanted to reconnect with.

I have to say I consider the Owls my modern day pen pals and love spending my spare time with them instead!

Hey Deedee did you find that chicken on Farmville? If so I want one.

Since the Aids epidemic of the 80's when so many young people that I knew died......and after being away from this area for awhile afterwards....there are people that I ask about people that I wonder about who like to be dramatic and say "dead"....all dead....

I have located more than a few people on Facebook who are actually alive and well with has been a huge relief.....of course a few more confirmed dead.....but many that didn't suffer that fate.....

FB has been a wonderful gift in that way......

And most recently watching you Chicago bound owls with your constantly growing thread of communication.....thats been a lot of fun for me....especially since Tina and Dianne strictly forbid my coming along for the fun....I don't know just who they think they are giving me orders.....but frankly...when you put those two together....I am scared of them...so stay behind I shall....

DeeDee does it again! LynnD in for a close second. You both are beautiful today! DeeDee... hmmm. My first guess was a Fabrege Egg. Kind of plain, though. What is it?

I don't use FB to find old friends. I'm not sure why. Just not my cup of tea.

bonachichi said...

I'll have more info later, but...

Facebook has 400 Million users. That would make it equivalent to the 4th largest country in the world.

Jodi..

I have reconnected with some old friends from grammer school. I am not sure I want to connect with many more if one from grammer school friends me I will accept them.. I have gotten a few requests from old ross bloggers, I actually did not really even know their real names.. but anyone, I ignored them.. and not to be rude but I have my family on FB so I am very selective on who friends me. I will say tho, I have peeked at old school friends pages, as I can see them from my friends page and my goodness they actually look the same but older, kinda freaks me out a bit..

I do enjoy fb.. I think more so for FV.. but I also get to interact with the fam which is fun, I never had that on myspace. and speaking of myspace, I am thinking of deleting mine. I just don't go on anymore, and the cpgem8 thing is old. I was hiding behind that name when I first started myspace, and there is no reason to hide anymore.. I know all my serial killers very well..

I will let you all know when I delete it, cause don't want to be rude and just be a X on your page..

:O)

Oh and Jodi..

Glad you reconnected.. and thanks for todays blog.. :O)

Bonachichi....(ignoring Tina)

That is indeed a Faberge egg....matter of fact...the first one...the first Hen Egg or jeweled Hen Egg is a Tsar Imperial Faberge egg...the first in a series of fifty two jeweled eggs made under the supervision of Peter Carl Faberge for the Russian Imperial family....it was crafted and delivered in 1885 to the then Tsar of Russia...Alexander III. The tsarina and tsar liked the egg so much that Alex III ordered a new egg from Faberge for his wifie each Easter after that...the egg is in Russia as part of the Vekselberg Collection.
The hen has ruby eyes and of course the thing is gold with white enamel...to look like a real egg...

A good copy of it was stolen from a jewelry store in England and even it was valued at $65,000....

That was my delete...I misspelled a word...lol

had trouble spelling "Tina" again, huh?

My cousin Stanley found me just yesterday. His Mom was my Mom's youngest sister. He lives in California, and wasn't able to fly home for Grandma's funeral. Now that Grandma is gone I'm bound and determined to keep in touch with my cousins!!

I best get my ass out of here. I have a tax appt @ 3:15pm, and need to get organized. Praying for a healthy refund!!!

Hodi, I didn't figure out that FB stat for myself. I've had a British documentary on FB sitting on my computer for some time. I watched it after reading the blog.

FB is innovative and powerful. It probably does more good than harm, but it's a power we need to learn how to handle.

As an experiment, a man set up a FB profile. He didn't put personal information on it, only bland stuff. He had a pic of himself and his dog. He accepted a random friend request.

This new "friend" happened to be a prolific hacker, hired by the production company. This is what happened;

The man was walking in a town square and was shocked to see his pic and his dog's pic on the big screen overlooking the square. The hacker approached him and started rattling a lot of personal details to the man, things only he and his family should know.

It takes only one loose thread. In this case, the hacker was able to determine the man's real e-mail address. He hacked into the e-mail and read all the mail. From that, he just followed leads and learned the man's life story.

It shouldn't be that easy, but it is. Another story was about a girl who had been harassing another via FB. She posted a comment that she was going to kill the other girl. The police got involved, arrested the bully and she spent 3 months in prison. Guess what? She's still on FB.

This is why my profile is basically, a lie. It's meant to be generic and at the same time obviously ridiculous. The pic is me, but it's such a bad pic that it could be anyone, anywhere, anytime.

I like FB and I think it's our future. I keep personal information away from there not because I don't want people like the owls to know it; I'm fine with that. I just don't want the whole world to have it.

Finally, the default privacy settings are to allow everyone, even non FB members, to view your profile. Mine is set to allow only "friends" to view it, but with 500+ "friends" (19 of those are owls), I don't know anything about most of them. These 500+ "friends" can see that I'm friends with all of you. Whether they can see your profile info is up to you. You really should set your security to "only friends".

BONACHICHI - Thanks for the heads up about FB!!!

I did it!!! All organized and ready for my appointment. I'll be back later.....♥

Happy Wednesday Owls.

Jodi, Very interesting topic. First I was afraid of starting a MySpace page and I finally did and nothing bad happened. Then I was leary of Facebook, but it seems to be OK too. I did set my page to be viewed by friends only and I only accept people I know or who are referred by a friend, usually because they need FV neighbors.

I haven't looked for school chums, because I am already in touch with people from school that I want to be in touch with. I don't have a need for 'friends' just to beef up my friends number.

I do like having some relatives on my page that I used to keep in touch with by email. It is easier to chat on FB.

Like some others, I am seriously considering deleting my MS page, so J/L take note: GET ON FACEBOOK! I talked Lynn into it when she was at my house and she set her page up on my computer, so watch out!

DeeDee, I love your egg/chicken. Thanks for the info on the origin of the Fabergé eggs. It was very interesting.

Lynn, I love spending time with the Owls, too.

Tina, LOL @ mocking Dee's spelling.

Waving a wing also to Carol, Bonachichi, Jodi and all the other Owls. I am going to watch my TiVo'd AIdol so I can be caught up for tonight. BBL

Woo hoo.....bring on the refund!!! I don't know why I dragged my feet. Could've had the money a few weeks ago.

Thank you for all the comments today. I barely got a "nap" last night and am now thoroughly exhausted!! I'll check in before I head to work in the wee hours. ♥

BARB - Didn't mean to be rude. Waving a wing @ you!!

JODI...good blog!

I have had FB for almost 3 years. I have a lot of family on my page and haven't really had any long lost relatives find me.

I did have an ex friend request me and that one got ignored! An old friend I hadn't heard from since the 80's in L.A did find me and that has been fun catching up.

I too am going to delete my MySpace. I never really go there and why have it taking up space on my 'puter?!

Waving to all that have posted.

Been a long day, gonna curl up under the blankies and chill.

Have a good night

I am so tired, come home and watch the news and see stories of Democratic members of congress facing death threats not just for themselves but their families. Two members had their home addresses published by irresponsible people on facebook.

One from Ohio his children can not leave his home and have been forbidden to answer their own phone.

The other one who's address was published, well it was the wrong address, it was his brothers and now the FBI is investigating because someone cut the gas line leading to his home. Oh the blogger who published the original wrong address, his response? Oh well collateral damage.

Somebody pleas explain to me in what world it is right for our elected officials such as John Boehner to say that the Congressman in Ohio is now a dead man. Or for Sarah Palin put out a call for people to reload and use gun sights for the 20 members of congress she has decided in her own words need to be taken out on the map her site created.

Why was it ok for Republican leaders in the house to go outside and egg the crowd on that just spit on, and called fellow members of congress niggers and faggots. Today they half ass denounce it but not before they make sure to get their digs in about how the Democrats are really out to get them.

How is this leadership? If you so proudly proclaim these things and use this incendiary language how come you can't accept responsibility when the end product is someone getting hurt or possibly ending up dead. If you light the fire aren't you an arsonist and responsible for everything that burns in the fires wake? Why is this any different?

I am sorry but wrong is wrong.

Off my soap box. I needed to vent because I am just sick to my stomach about what is happening in this country.

Jodi. Great blog today! I just may have to go to FB one of these days since it appears I'll be all by my lonesome on MS.

SacBarb. Maybe you can show me around your farm.

Still at my mom's and having a nice visit. Dinner is almost ready so will try to stop in again later. Waving at you all.

Politics will certainly let your temper boil.. it is so frustrating, so your vent is warranted, and to vent makes one feel good.. so go right ahead and vent all ya want..

DeeDee: congrats on first. I need to just copy and paste that and keep it handy, you get first all the time now! Ya first Ho.

Jodi: I have found a few friends from school which has been fun. I haven't put my maiden name on here so I may not get as many friends finding me as I would if I put my maiden name. That is okay with me though.

I enjoy keeping in touch more with my Stepmom and cousins. That is very nice.

I had a terrible headache all day. Finally laid down and slept. It was better when I woke up and then after my workout I was fine. I really think that there is something to be said for "working it off"..it works for me with colds, pains and headaches. I never realized before how much I was missing. My instinct is to not go because I feel bad, but I have found that it makes me better! I wonder if it is the sweating that cleans out the impurities..not sure, just my theory.

bonachichi said...

WOW! What'd I miss? I thought the Biden comment was blown out of proportion. I don't use that word personally, but I do say "flippin'" instead. Since the intent is the same, is it wrong for me?

LynnD, it's sad to give up on your country. What choice are we left with? I don't want to be associated with those people. Politicians are spoilt children who will never grow up.

Hi Everyone!

JODI: I really like connecting with old friends on FB. I've found a lot of people from high school, or they've found me..and it's great to see what they're doing now. One thing I've found out the hard way..be careful with contact from old boyfriends. You would think they'd have matured by now..in some cases..not so much. It would be cool to find the exchange student that went to my school in 8th grade. We kept in contact until we were in our 20's..and then he just kind of disappeared off the radar. Maybe I'll search his name tonight and see what pops up..ya never know! Great blog JODI..thank you!

DEEDEE: Congrats on loveliest!

CAROL: I haven't been over to MS for months..my status probably still says Merry Christmas. I think I'm going to delete my page there too..though I do like my music player..even if I never listen to it..lol..

J/LIN: Yay..it sounds like you might be ready to take the FB plunge! :)

LYNN: The news is reporting that windows are being broken in our representatives offices downtown..really sad.

BONACHI: I don't have that much personal info on FB either..the thing about the emails is a little scary though. Thanks for the warning!

SACBARB: I would think it'd be really difficult to stay in touch with a large number of friends on FB, but some seem very good at it. Not me though...lol..! Once in a while I'll see my friend count go down by one..and for the life of me I don't know who's gone!

MO: Don't you mean curl up under the blankets and warm?? ;)

TINA: LOL@ spelling Tina..and moving..and vent..dang..you're three for three!! ;)...:D

Long day here today..dentist tomorrow..ugh..so for now..over to FB!! :)

Have a great night..Owls! :D

Bebbilane said...

Zona: Hi and have a good day tomorrow. Hopefully the dentist won't be too bad.

I am thinking of deleting my Myspace too. Not sure yet, I haven't been there in ages though..lol. I will have to transfer all my pics over to my Facebook..they need an export function...lol

I love FB. I have re-connected with some of my high school friends that I really didn't know (they didn't talk to me) but have gotten to know if my reunions over the years. It has been nice to become friendly with a few of them. I also found a girl that I grew up with that I hadn't talked to in about 35 years and she lives in Colorado so that will be fun to meet soon. Interesting blog JODI and interesting comments.

I have been snowed in today and that has been just fine with me. The snow is all melted now off the roads so I will be out and about again tomorrow. It was quite the storm last night. A lot of people lost their power with how heavey the snow was...our lights blinked but thank goodness no power loss.

I just wanted to say hi to everyone and I am off to bed.

Night...
