Heirlooms

By Mary

My parents have been gone over 12 years. I think of them a lot. I look around and except for pictures I really don't have much that was left from them.

My parents were not wealthy, but we lived comfortably. I don’t recall them ever mentioning any articles that were handed down to them through generations.

Many families hand down silverware, antique furniture, homes, knick knacks, etc. We had none of that. I think maybe some doilies or pictures, that’s it. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to leave things; they only had things that were absolutely necessary to survive. No frills, I am sure. I have a few things my Father left behind from his shoe store. He was a preacher and shoe cobbler. My favorite possession is a hand painted sign with a picture of a wing-tip shoe. It says “Shoe Repair”. I have worried about where the sign and other articles of his would go should anything happen to me. I wonder what should happen to them through coming generations. Will these things mean anything to them? My Father had his shop in the same town for over 50 years. I have decided to donate them to that town’s historical society/museum. I have spoken to a couple of the museum’s curators, and they have said they would accept them. It gives me great peace to know his things will be there for many generations to see.

Do you have things that have been handed down to you or that you know will eventually come to you?

LynnD, what a sweet blog. Your parents did indeed have something; their part in history. They left their mark on their town. People will remember them and future generations will see that sign as a living testament to the early residents. It's a good thing you're doing, donating it.

Hello to DeeDee (Pretty!) and Just_Lin! Waving to all coming later...

Good morning, DeeDee and Bonach. It's too early for me. Now that the house is quiet, I'm going back to bed.

Just_Lin said...

Mary. Great blog! I will be back later to comment.

bonachichi said...

Mary, I'm so sorry! I thought LynnD wrote the blog. I even read your name before reading it. Please forgive! It's your parents... they have a place in history. How many people can say that??

Mary/MI said...

Pretty DeeDee :) where is Tina? Tied down somewhere?

Bonachi, Thanks, that was sweet (both times lol)

JustLin, congrats on #2 (sounds funny lol)

My tummy is so upset this morning. The winter sport here in Florida seems to be eating! I have met up with many Michigan friends here for many meals. Ice cream eating is an Olympic sport! I think I am still tied for 3rd. No way can I keep up with these snowbirds lol! I may need intervention when I get home! We are heading to another restaurant (no one cooks here),shopping, then a stroll on the beach. I have one more day here. I leave Sat.if I can get into my traveling pants lol!
Can you believe I have had an electric blanket on every night? It has been an unusually cold winter. POOH!
Oh well, beats the snow in Michigan.
Have a great day everyone!

Good Mary......the museum is a great idea....have you already donated the sign or loaned it....I would want to see it displayed where people could enjoy it.....thats just me...

I have donated things over time....I still have many things of my parents and grandparents that need to be placed. I have allowed my Fathers journals to be recorded but for some reason I just can't seem to let some things go....but I need to get all this situated for my own peace of mind...

I have our family silver and I love using it daily and I have one set of china that was already antique when my grandmother acquired it....its too valuable and delicate to use......

But you know young people these days just don't live that way anymore.....with all the trappings of my era....so I imagine these things will be donated as well.....

My sons wife would love anything she could get....but shes one of those thin lipped..hard as nails peroxide blonde whores that has transformed her body into a virtual temple of silicone.....just white trash from the WRONG side of the tracks.....

I can't tolerate her...and I have tried.....my son cheated on his fantastic first wife with this harlot and eventually married her.......I begged him to explain what he saw in this tramp and all anyone could tell me was it must be those beach ball titties......

She reminds me of an even more moronic version of Pam Anderson...

On her ONLY visit to my home she examined a Steuben Glass Gazelle bowl and told me that she had one just like it that she had gotten from Finger Hut.....

She sat at and banged on my piano and smiled at me sympathetically because she had never heard of Bosendorfer and assumed it was an OFF BRAND!!!!

I wanted to slam the top down on her but I didn't want to pop anything and risk a flood of silicone all over my "cheap" piano......

bonachichi said...

Jeez, DeeDee... I've never seen a real Bosendorfer. And you have one right there in your home? Is it as beautiful as I've heard they are? Is it an 88, 92 or 97 key?

bonachichi said...

I just re-read Mary's blog, and realized she asked a question; DeeDee so far, has been the only one to answer.

Mary, my uncle died of cancer in 2001. Before he died, he did a complete family history. There's a picture of a several-times great grandmother. She looks just like my mum did. It's amazing how features can be passed through generations.

Dad comes from Missouri farm stock. One of his ancestors owned much of what is now St. Louis. The dumbass (Dad's word, not mine) sold it for like, a donkey cart or something. My family has apparently, been producing idiots for generations.

Happy Thong Thursday Owl's. Tina do you have your thong on today? Actually, I can't imagine wearing something that gives a permanent wedgie.

DeeDee, BAMMMM right into first.

J/L, you're up early, but going back to bed I see.

Mary, Great blog topic. I have some things that were wedding gifts to my parents when they married in 1930. I treasure most the handmade things from my mother. I have nothing older than that.

My friend, Sorority Sharon, (not Chaperone Sharon) was born in Sac and her family has a long history in Sac. Another Sorority sister, Pat, is the Archivist for the city of Sac. Pat gave our chapter a tour of the city archives and surprised Sharon and us with some memorabella (sp?)from Sharon's family. It was very interesting and it will be preserved there forever.

Mary, I think it is a wonderful idea for you to give your sign to the museum.

sacBarb said...

Mary, are you in Miami? Al Roker said it was 49 there this morning. Burrrr

Bonachichi, LOL

Dee, don't hold back...tell us what you really think of your DIL...LOL

I am off to the dentist. Have a good day everyone. BBL

Waving to all the other Owls.

Bonachichi....

I have a Bosendorfer 225....it has 92 keys....all below are 88 and the one above it..the 209.. has 97 but it is a concert grand....mine is whats called "half a concert grand"....7'4".......I also have a 6' Yamaha just for shits and giggles....its in the sitting area of my bedroom.......

Hi..have not read the blog yet so will comment later. I still have comments written down from last weeks blogs so soon I will be writing.

MO from AREA 51: I am sorry you are not feeling so cheerful but Spring will be here soon. I know we are having teasing Spring days with snow still in the forecast as March is a snowy month for us. I miss seeing and hearing from you on your posts. Maybe you could just peek in on those days you don't want to write and say hi so we know all is well. I am speaking for myself but I don't think any of us would ever feel like you are pulling us down...we are all friends..good friends! I am like you that I know how hard ÇAROL AND TINA are working all day and then trying to blog and then to not get many comments...it makes me feel bad as I mentioned in 51, I get nervous that our nest will go away and I would feel horrible if that happened.

MARY: DRINK A screwdriver or Bloody Mary and you will be well. Heck, it is already afternoon there so I am sure you are fine by now after a couple of meals! I can't wait to eat with you in Chicago.

I finally got officially weighed last night and gained 3 pounds from my cruise so I don't think that is too bad considering all that salt I licked off my marg glasses and all those chocolate chip cookies and cake and a few escargot!!

Off to meet DIL and boys so be back later...I have little presents to deliver to the them and big hugs and kisses to receive!!

Tina~in_ut said...

I just had a thought, DeeDee...DIL stands for daughter I loath! I do believe that fits~ :)~

Mary~ There really isn't anything passed down from generation to generation here.....I think what I will always be most proud of are the buildings my dad has worked on. When you drive to the beach, you pass a building with a lot of arches and cupola that my dad built. When you go to Disneyland, the candy store has a lot of my dad's work. That is what I'll always be proud of~

DeeDee~ ur pretty~

J/L, Bonachichi, Sacky, and Mary...ur pretty too!

Oh...I have to tell you, on the way to the doctor's office, on Superior, you come over a hill and BAM! There's the ocean and today you could see Catalina....it was such a pretty site!~ :)

Tina~in_ut said...

and Di....ur pretty too~ (whispers) but not as pretty as me! :)~

Mary. What a wonderful solution for the preservation of your father's sign. Many generations will be able to enjoy and appreciate it and its place in the town's history.

I have a brooch from my great-grandmother and a long string of onyx beads from my grandmother. I also have a small silver purse of hers. It's made of the metal silver, kind of like maile (sp?). I don't have much from my dad's side. Several years ago, his sisters researched their family as far back as they could and made a good sized hard-bound book for each of us family members. I was very impressed with that and think it is great. .

DeeDee said...

We had a relative do a family tree thing on my Mothers side many years ago.....and it wasn't good.....only a generation or three before she encounter horse thieves and a woman who sold her kids as field hands for 2 bits.....

Years later...a cousin from California....Dolly...very glamorous Dolly decided to do a tree and I told that that on Mothers side that she might want to limit it to a bush....ijs....

I enjoyed your sentimental blog MARY. I am very sentimental and sometimes look at the few things I have and wonder if anyone else will care when I am gone.

I have a silver cup my father won. He was a fine pianist and even won a Steinway piano. I also have a few of my maternal grandfather's water color paintings. I do have family pictures.

SLIN - All you have to do is go to your produce department to get something one of your relatives left behind. :)

Congrats on first DeeDee.

Mary, Great blog. I have a couple of things from my grandmother. She collected the Rockwell plates and she gave each of her grandchildren one. I love that plate.

I have some other small momentos too. I like that.

That is awesome that the sign will be a part of the museum..very exciting!

Bebbilane said...

DeeDee: Wow, sounds like you have very strong feelings about the DIL..holy mackeralantie!

Maureen said...

MARY...what a great blog. I'm glad you have a place to have those mementos be enjoyed for the ages.

I don't have a lot of my parents things. When we left Wisconsin after my dad died, my mom gave almost everything away, as we moved with very little. I have some towels my mom embroidered, pictures, their wedding rings and a few other things. My brother has the flag that was draped on dad's casket, his fishing rod and reel, an onyx ring and his army jacket.

My parents didn't have good china or silver or anything like that. They had gotten married when my dad was on leave from the Army.

As far as handed down things I have a table cloth my great grandmother crocheted and a baby sweater/hat/bootie set my grandmother knitted. Not much else.

It's ironic, this blog. This past weekend I was helping a friend that wanted to get rid of stuff. He kept EVERYTHING his parents had! A box of fish hooks, pads of paper...EVERYTHING! I tried to explain my philosophy...unless it it deeply sentimental, let it go. Can't keep everything. I believe the memories are in the heart and not based on things.

My friend Donna, has been so much fun. She is the pink bunny that loves to keep going and going! She loves taking guests around Florida. We have gotten lost a few times trying to find different beaches. We never sweated it, just laughed and kept going until we found them.
It has been cold, but I haven't let it dampen my time here.

Hey FB friends I have seen a lot of Mingos here!

Thanks for all your wonderful comments here. I loved them all!
Dee,Dee's Pie-an-o,Bonachi's donkey trade-in,SacBarbs Mother's precious things made by hand, would love to see Tina's Dad's handy work on display,Justlins's family jewelry, and family tree,Lani's Dad's silver cup (how proud you must be!),Bebbi's Rockwell plates,Mo's GM'S items made with love, love that you have your parent's rings and sad about your Dad's passing, but glad that family member has his flag.
We will always have the sweet memories. We must talk about them to our families so they will have them to pass on.
Again, thanks everyone for your comments.

I am off to farm and head to bed. My "bunny" friend has another day of fun planned! Nite to all and of course the sweet lurkers :)

Hello to all..

Mary.. Great Blog..

I have lots of Heirlooms from Aunts, Uncle's, friends.. I tried to take one of something from you was important to me..

My fav is a blue sweater I have hanging in my closet from my Aunt Margaret, when we were cleaning her closet out, I came across this sweater, took it off the hanger and put it up to my nose to smell it, and I gotta tell ya, it still had her smell on it.. I grabbed it so quick and told my cousin I wanted it.. she gladly gave it me, I look at if often and yes I still smell it.. and yes it still smells like her.. at least I think it does.. I love it..

My parents have things from their parents, not big things, just small trinkets, but it is good to have them..

I am very lucky that I still have my parents, but I know someday they will not be here.. but I know I will have many things from them..

There is also something very special to me which is in my office, its a plant that was sent to me from some owls when Aunt Jo passed.. it has grown and flourished and I love it, it gets watered twice a week.. I call it Aunt Jo, and treat it very well, I trim it often.. its so very special to me..

Ya know it could be just anything, but the value of it can e enormous..

Again, Mary, Great Blog.. Thank You!

Dianne..

Thank you very much for what you said in your comment..

Our blog def gets more challenging, as posting a blog daily can be hard. It is a gift when owls write one, so the writing for I and Tina can get a rest.

It is very clear that we have lost many owls, for reasons that are their own. I would never ask or be intrusive on the reason why. I always say, anyone is welcome back at anytime, no questions asked.

It is hard, a group of one time unknowns, meeting here each day. And getting to know each other thru words. There is no feel, or touch, or facial expressions to tell the story. So the getting to know you part takes lots of time and patience.

From the day this blog started, I truly believed we were in it as a group. I have realized lately that is not the case. Some leave not to look back. Which makes me sad, because what did we build here then. I am grateful for the owls you have stuck with it, and the importance to them of the nest.

Several months back when we started losing owls. Tina offered to write a blog every other day with me, and if we get blogs from owls we would of course post them and then continue with our every other day agreement. It has worked so far. But holding up a fort that might be breaking apart is a very hard thing to do...

This has been weighing on my mind for a very long time now. I did not approach the subject, as my "real" life has so many issues, I could not make the nest another issue. The nest was my release, my happy place.. I wanted to keep it that way.. I knew I was hurt, but it was easier to just let it be.

My commitment to the nest still stands and I will not walk away. What I/we have built is just to important to me, and perhaps not important to others that I thought it was..

One must think, If I walked away, what would happen. I am in no means saying that I am irreplaceable.. but if I did that would be a pretty shitty thing to do to my friends, that stuck by me and the nest..

I will say this tho, to the owls still standing.. if you feel the nest has run its course, lets discuss it together as friends, and see what we come up with..

Wow, I guess that was weighing on my mind more than I thought..

♥♥♥

You know what sucks.......

Hubby might be losing his job.

I'm trying not to stress about it , but for the last two weeks my stomach has been in knots.

He will find out March 22nd, if his company is relocating to California. There is no way we can go with my stepdaughter still living in Illinois.

night.owls.sb said...

Mo..

You have been there from the beginning, you have always helped me in ways that might me unknown to you, but just your comments, your friendly hello's, your wit, just those things help when one has a hectic day, and then reads your comments.. You have stuck with it tho, even if some days you were not up to it, you always came back.. just as I have.. and actually its all about that..

I would send you a hug, but don't know how to them.. so I will just say hug.. :)

You know I had to come back here and just make a comment. I have a solution to our problem. They need to outlaw Farmville, Mafia Wars, Farmtown, etc.

Here's why:

1. Less time to socialize with others (aka, the blog~!)
2. Carpal Tunnel cause you know we all are getting it by clicking on those damn squares trying to farm.
3. Our computers would run faster because we wouldn't be clogging it up with spyware and crap.
4.It's just wrong to farm and never get any real fruit from it.

Carol, I am so grateful to you for starting this blog and I would hate to see it go away. Thank you Tina for helping Carol keep the nest up. I feel very guilty for not being a better Owl and giving you guys more help.

I agree that we do not need a topic every day. We seem to be able to talk to each other without a specific topic. The whole point of this nest was to have a place where we could be together. We have that, and we do not need to put pressure on Carol or Tina to provide us with a topic.

Well, it looks like I opened a big old whoop ass can regarding the blog and I'm glad that I did. I for one do not want to see it go away. I have enjoyed it so much aNd am so grateful to CAROL for even starting it. As I was telling TINA tonight that if it went away I would have to go back to Ross or Rosie and I don't like their blogs. TINA asked me why I would have to go there....well, I don't know any others except I am on a Weight Watcher one every once in awhile but all they we talk about is food and not eating it so that gets kind of boring.

I think if we keep up comments it will help keep this blog running. I know it is discouraging to TINA AND CAROL and whoever writes a blog to not see comments...***disclaimer...this has nothing to do with the fact that tomorrow's blog is mine*** SO, if we that read write hellos and just some comments it keeps the blogs up and as I said yesterday to MO...it let's us know that our friends are doing okay.

I will be passing that onto Sam someday. My Dad has some of my brother Dale's artwork that Eric and I didn't want, so he has decided to donate it to our local Historical Society. I love that a piece of him will be part of Oregon's history!!!

DIANNE....Thank you for opening that can. I will be the first to admit that I am a wayward owl...(hanging head in shame). I am forever grateful to CAROL for starting the nest. Also a huge thank you to TINA for all that you do. I value my friendships here and sincerely wish we can keep the nest going. It has been a huge part of my life for 2 + years. You have been here for me in more ways that I can count....and for that i THANK YOU!!! ♥

MARY: My mom left me so many things..I don't know what to do with them all. I prize her paintings most of all though. She was an artist and we still have about 15 of her paintings. I worry that when we are gone, they will just be disposed of because we have no children to pass them down to. The thought of them just being thrown away really makes me sad.

After my mom passed away, I found all kinds of documents in an old steel box. My grandparents' and great grandparents birth certificates...pictures from the early 1900's..all kinds of stuff. It was really cool to see it. I don't necessarily know who everyone in the pictures are..but they are interesting nonetheless.

CAROL: I made a commitment to always be here to comment unless I wasn't feeling well. I really like coming in each day and saying HI and reading what everyone has to say. I've made wonderful friends here and I don't ever want to see this blog go away.

JENNIFER: I'll keep you and your family in my prayers. I'm so sorry you are going through this again.

JODI: I love that your brother's paintings will be given to the Historical Society! Good to see the DP and Glazers again! :)

SACBARB: I second your ewwwww on the escargot!

DIANNE: No one does whoopass like you..gentle but firm.. ;)

J/LIN: I have a purse just like that from my grandmother!

I'm sorry to be commenting so late but I seem to be losing this bronchitis battle. Mr Z wanted to take me to Urgent Care yesterday, but I didn't want more doctor's bills..so I said no and just went to bed. This coughing is wearing me out. I have another RX that I'm going to try today, hopefully that will help.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!
