~ Cinco de Mayo ~

by Tina~in_ut

I love Mariachi Vargas. They are my family's favorite Mariachi group. We all have their CD's and although not all of us know what some of the songs mean (me), we love listening to them. I asked my sister what this song was about, and she just shook her head and said that there was no real English translation. No biggie.....I love it anyway. When I hear the people screaming in it, it reminds me of my aunt. She was always the one at family weddings that would scream in all the right places. Actually, to me, it's not screaming. It's singing.

Many people in the U.S. think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. It's not. It's the celebration of Mexico's victory in Puebla over the French on May 5, 1862. The French invaded Mexico because the Mexican President decided to discontinue paying their foreign debt for two years because they were bankrupt and devastated after the Mexican-American war. They promised to resume payments after the two year moratorium. The English, Spanish, and French would not accept this and invaded. The English and Spanish soon made deals with the Mexican government and left, but the French decided to take over the country. The French outnumbered the Mexicans 2 to 1 and were better equipped, but the Mexicans still managed to defeat an army that hadn't lost in over 50 years. It was the last time an army from another continent would invade Mexico. Although defeated in Puebla, the French, with reinforcements, took over Mexico City a year later, but with the help of the United States, the Mexican army was able to remove the French from Mexico once and for all.

Cinco de Mayo isn't recognized as a National Holiday in Mexico. For the most part, it is celebrated in the state of Puebla and a few other regions. The U.S. celebrates more than Mexico does, especially in areas heavily populated by those of Mexican descent. I liked going down to Olvera Street in Los Angeles with my family on that day. It was always a treat to go there. We ate at the same little hole in the wall restaurant and I bought my favorite candy.....and if we were lucky, we'd get to hear the Mariachi's play.

Morning Glories!

Shirley awake again? Congrats on first!

Tina interesting blog! I never knew the history of Cinco de Mayo before. Great lesson. More food for thought on this day and I love the music!

I of course thought it was celebrating the invention of the Margarita in my opinion this should be a national holiday.

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!

Good Morning Shirley, Lynn D and all Hooters! Great information, Tina.

If Cinco de Mayo is an excuse to eat Mexican and drink Margaritas, let's go big. Viente de julio. Setenta de septiembre. All we have to do is say the date in spanish and we go from artery-clogged drunks to international celebrants. Yessss!!

Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Eunice- how festive you look!! You have done yourself proud.

Hi Lynn, bonacci!

Shirley, I've had this picture of you in my head recently. It's a half-plucked, defiant chicken, marching. In stiletto heels with tassels. Holding a notepad and pen. Sometimes you have glasses, sometimes not.

Tina...Very interesting blog....I did think that Cinco de Mayo was like the 4th of July or to paraphrase Bonacci the "winds of July" which I assume is similar to the 70th of September

Also saying good morning to LynnD, Bonacci, scirish, Goldie, and Birdee.

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery on May 5th in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Cinco De Mayo.

And now you know where the name originated!

I don't know where Tina got that story she is telling but I wanted you all to know the facts before anyone embarrasses themselves with all that talk about French people traveling in Mexico! Geeez!

Hi Everyone!

TINA: Thanks for the great blog today. I didn't know the origin of Cinco de Mayo either. It was really interesting to read about it. Arizona has been having celebrations all weekend. It's a very big thing here.

I liked the Mariachi Vargas video too. On any given night in my neighborhood, you can go outside and hear this same music playing. Sometimes it's for a party, sometimes just friends gathering to talk and laugh. I don't hear much of the singing your Aunt likes to do..but I really do like the music. To me, it's a very happy sound.

Thanks for the great blog TINA, as always.

BTW....Eunice is looking muy caliente :D

DeeDee said...

"sinko de mayo".....TINA!!! And your calling me Bozo?!?

J/L....lol and I think I threw up a little in my mouth at your mayo slathered chile relleno....

Tina~in_ut said...

DeeDee~ I'm gonna send ur version to Nancy....do you think she'll get it? :)~

Sandie said...

Shirley, you go girl! (I think I will just cut and paste from now on each morning.) :)

Tina, loved the Mariachi Vargas video! I did know what Cinco de Mayo celebrated because I just recently googled it. :) (Zona, I'm surprised that the "fastest googler in the west" didn't do that!) The reason I recently googled it is because I completely embarrassed myself a few weeks ago when some friends asked us to go out to a Mexican restaurant for Cinco de Mayo, and I asked, "What date is that?" I immediately realized what I said and am still being teased about that today. But, I feel comfortable admitting my blunder (stupidity) to my owl friends. :)

So, we are going out to a Mexican restaurant tonight where we will see an Elvis impersonator. I'm not sure what that has to do with Cinco de Mayo--but maybe I'm just being stupid again. LOL

Bonacci, you are cracking me up today!

Happy Birthday, Just_Lin's son!

Sandie said...

Tina, Eunice is very festive today. I've never seen a full body shot of Eunice until today. She's quite statuesque, in more ways than one, I'm sure.

EUNICE looks beautiful today all dressed to celebrate a "mayo" holiday.

TINA; I was interested in your full history lesson but I have to say I was more interested in DEE DEE"S (nothing personal ya' know). I always wondered why you couldn't get mayo on tacos when visiting Mexico and now I finally know!

I think this music sounds happy also. I used to love to watch my late husband's family (Barajas was the last name) at gatherings. They loved to dance and sing to the music. The older people that weren't able to get up and around just sat in their chair with their shoulders moving to the music. Now me....I didn't like to get up and dance to it so much with my husband .... who of course wanted to dance every song.

Zona said...

Sandie~ omg!!! That really made me laugh....when is it? You could always say you wanted to know which day of the week it was~ ijs~

Zona~ again....you gave me two ideas for November~ :D

Happy Cinco de Mayo Owls.

Tina, thanks for the history lesson. I grew up in Los Angeles and we loved to go to Olvera Street also. It was such a happy place and the food was to die for.

DeeDee, LMAO at the Paul Harvey version (the rest of the story).

LynnD, The margarita may not have been invented on this day, but I know for a fact, many are consumed.

Bonacci, I would have never caught the 70th of September because I don't have even a working knowledge of Spanish, however I DO know sign language in two languages.

sacBarb said...

Shirley, congrats on #1 again.

MEK, good march to 25. You will catch up to Tinka.

Scirish, from A-51 - Your friend is in my prayers.

J/L, A very happy birthday to your son.

Waving to Goldie, Birdee, Zona, Sandie, Dianne, Carol, and everyone who lands later.

bonachichi said...

Scrish, I don't know how people do it. In a restaurant, I wanted butter. I asked for a donkey. I wish I could say this doesn't happen often, but it does.

Literally, viente means he/it blows. 20 is spelled veinte. Viento is wind. Switch languages and all bets are off.

Where's the beer?

bonachichi said...

SacBarb, you know sign language? How cool!! It's like a secret code, isn't it? I never thought about more than one language.. Except for spelling words out, I'd think the sign for things would be the same. Someone putting their hand to their mouth would look like "I'm hungry" in any language, I'd think. What is different from one language to another?

Tina~in_ut said...

Bonacci, I am Italian so the sign language of which I speak is the signage for dirty words in Italian, and of course English. I did take two years of American sign language which barely scratched the surface, but I haven't practiced it in 15 years. That coupled with old timers disease, has rendered me almost useless in ASL.

bonachichi said...

Shirley's on another roll!!! Hold on to your knickers!!

SacBarb, I'm impressed by the sign language. I've seen this Italian sign language you speak of. Basically, "You're bad. Very bad! You're bad and ugly. And arrogant! You're bad, ugly and arrogant! This fist will be so far up your...." Well, you can imagine the rest. Me, well let's just say I know when to start running.

sacBarb said...

Bonacci, There is also the sign of the horns, which puts the worst kind of curse on a person. My Grandmother used this a lot. She didn't speak English, but she understood when someone was not being honest with her and that was her response. Carol and Iteach probably know these signs too.

bonachichi said...

I've seen those horns!!! I don't know why Italians bother speaking. The hands say it all.

Hey hooters,

Tina that was such an informative blog today! I really did not know much about Cinco De Mayo at all.

I enjoy mariachi music too, there is 1 Mexican restaurant we like that has roaming mariachis.

Thank you for the blog!

I worked in the flu clinic today, not 1 case of real flu came in. Mostly kids, mostly colds, a couple with allergies and 1 little girl with asthma.

A couple of the elementary schools in the area have closed, so I think the parents panicked at the first sign of cough or fever. I don't blame them one bit!

BIG SURPRISE: We have decided to adopt the kitten, so my attempt to hold out really failed.

I want to name her Nancy after my favorite aunt that died, but we also like Annie, so she may have 2 first names.

I had thrown out 3 baskets full of toys when we were getting ready to move, not thinking and not planning that we would ever have another kitten or puppy.

So now we will have to get all new toys and stuff which will be fun.

Shirley you did some awesome marching today!

Hope you all had a nice day!

Sandie said...

Shirley, you've got some marching moves, girl! Love the Oh-lays and torrrrtia! LOL

EBJ, congrats on your new kitty! Can't wait to see pictures. I like Annie. :)

We went to the Mexican restaurant tonight and it wasn't as crowded as I thought it would be. The Elvis impersonator was quite good! Tinka, you would have loved him! He was pretty cute, too!

JUST LIN...Happy birthday to your baby boy!!

SHIRLEY...Oy Vey Ole! You are on a roll this week! You are cracking me up!!

Tina: The real story behind Cinco is almost as interesting as Delorese's! I just found out about it today, when we wikipedia'ed it at lunch, and then when I got home tonight and read your blog.

Reaction: How amazing is it that the European Colonial Powers of the time thought it was perfectly acceptable to invade other parts of the world, and flat-out murder the people who lived there, so they could exploit their labor and their resources!!! Wow!

Good job with the lesson today Tina!

I generally celebrate Mexico's Independence Day in my classroom and don't do too much with Cinco de Mayo.

I noticed that all the grocery stores always go wild with Cinco de Mayo sales. I wonder this year if sales went down this year, because people have the fear of buying food from Mexico.
