Garbage Day

by Just_Lin

It's Sunday night and I just remembered that I have to get my garbage can out to the curb for early morning pick up. Monday is Garbage Day. Agh! I often feel annoyed at our garbage company. It costs me $92 every two months to have one 45 gallon garbage can emptied. If I put no can out for pick up, I am still charged. If I put an extra can or bag out for pick up, I am then charged extra. For any large items, I must call ahead to make special arrangements for pick up and, you guessed it, I am charged big time for that. Although it will probably be raining in the morning, I don't expect it to be anything like last Monday.

I awoke to the sounds of pounding, heavy rains and the roar of the gusting winds as they tore through the trees on the mountainside. The garbage trucks had already come by and, in spite of all the noise from the storm, I could still hear the dreaded sound of my trash can being blown over and then swept along the asphalt as the winds pushed it up the street. I flew out of bed, throwing on my robe, then an oversized man's fleece jacket on top of that, and jammed my feet into my cowboy boots. The look was only accented by my "bed head", with the overall effect being that I am a woman who doesn't quite have all her faculties. I hurried through the house and into the adjoining garage and pushed open the garage door.

It was raining sheets of water which were being blown sideways. Small tree branches were strewn across the lawn, sidewalk and street. I could see my elderly neighbor, who was using a walker due to knee surgery, very slowly working his way over to his garbage can which was across the street. Fortunately, he only had a few feet to go and his can wasn't moving anymore because it had been blown up against a parked car. I finally spotted my own garbage can. It was across the street and up a couple of houses. The lid was not in sight and I was really hoping the garbage man had stuffed the lid down inside the can, like they sometimes do in good weather. I lowered my head and went into the storm to retrieve my garbage can. It was, literally, like buckets of water were being thrown on me.....hard. If I wasn't fully awake before, I definitely was now. I reached the trash can and pulled it back to the shelter of my garage. Water was dripping off of me as if I'd just stepped out of a pool. I looked inside the can. Damn! There was no lid inside but they did manage to leave one small bag of garbage at the very bottom. I knew immediately what it was.....the body of a dead rat that I had trapped out back a week ago. Crap! Double crap!!

As I stood in the doorway of the garage, the winds intensified even more, really showing their full power. I was surprised that I didn't see any roof shingles flying past me, or the witch from The Wizard of Oz, for that matter. I spotted my trash can lid across the street, trapped between two cars that were parked very close to each other. I ventured out into the storm once again, squeezing between the bumpers of the cars as more buckets of water were being blown into my face. When I got back to the garage with the lid, I briefly thought that I could now get a much needed cup of coffee.....but then I remembered......I was missing a bungee cord I had placed across the top of the can lid to prevent the raccoons from getting into the garbage. I went back out to the curb and just stood in the heavy rain for a moment. What the hell? I couldn't possibly get any more drenched than I already was. I just stood there and scanned the street until I saw it. It was laying next to the rushing water in the gutter in front of my neighbor's house. Once I had that, I could finally come in out of the rain.

Oh, yes, I better go put that garbage can out by the curb now before I forget. Garbage Day! What a pain in the ass!

Morning Glories!

I see Tina....Janice got first this morning! Waving a wing at you!

J/L I had to laugh out loud at your garbage day adventures! Yes a very big pain in the ass and they do charge an arm and a leg. We have our recycling picked up but Mr. Lynn D takes every thing else to the dump. It is so much cheaper!

I hope all of the ill, infirm and wounded are on the mend today! Dianne I just about threw up reading your post you know how much I love the freaking dentist.

I have to fly out of here this morning. Full Day ahead, actually tomorrow is going to be one too. I will try to check in when I can!

Good Morning Hooters!
Congrats on 1st tina~ hope your weather gets better!

J/L- I can't believe you have to pay that much for garbage! we can put out as much that fits into the big bin for weekly pickup. Every 2 weeks we put out the big recycle bin. Big items put out they come pick up the 3rd week of the month- we only pay extra for stickers for things like appliances.
I can sympathize with what a pain in the ass it is to get it out there in the morning. Lucky for me Mr. Goldie does it, rain or shine...

Shirley- lmao at your quote of the day!

Thanks for all the sympathy everyone, but really - Its not that terrible. Hurts like an sob and boot is not so attractive (2 weeks min. Shirley) but nothing compared to what Jodi did!

Oh, that poor rat!

Tina, congrats on the early worm :)
I hate, hate ice on the road!!

J/L I thought our trash pick up was high! I pay 45.75 for 3 months. That is for a med. size cart on wheels. I take recycled stuff to a station about 10 miles away.
I think next time you should go out in a white t-shirt and charge for the show lol!

LynnD,I hope you get to take a deep breath in between your projects!

Whabby, eeeewwww!! Save your sympathy for broken arms, toes, and fingers! ijs

Waving at Bonacci,Carol,& Goldie!

Lo and behold, I got a card in the mail yesterday informing me that the garbage company will pick up TWO large items for free this year as long as I attach to it one of the two brightly colored cards they send me. The item can't be more than 200 lbs or longer than 6 ft. We do recycle here, too, which is picked up weekly and we have "Green pick up", i.e., leaves and small branches, every other week.

Bear Yesterday was another garbage pick up day and guess what remains in the bottom of the can? Yep! The rat is still there! I think the plastic bag he is in kind of stuck to the can because it was wet from the storm adventures. I have put it in an additional bag, placed other items at the bottom of the can before putting Ratsy back in. Hopefully, it will finally be gone next Monday.

Mary LOL @ wearing a t-shirt! I would have been so cold!

Tina Be careful driving on that ice. How scary!

Waving a dry wing at Carol, Goldie, Bonach, and LynnD!

Happy Tuesday Owls.

J/L, Reading your blog put me right in the picture. We have those big bins on wheels and they are suppose to be heavy enough to withstand the wind and they usually do. However, last week my trash bin also blew down the street. I have a wonderful next door neighbor who chased it down and brought it back for me (along with his own).

As for your garbage bill, you get off cheaply. I pay $128 every two months for one garbage can plus one recycle and one garden waste which they pick up on alternate weeks. We used to have a neighborhood clean-up day twice a year where we could put out anything and it would be picked up. They discontinued that about 7 years ago and now we have to take that stuff to the dump, which costs $25 for a pick-up load.

When my husband and I owned the glass business, my husband ordered a huge dumpster which was picked up weekly by a private company. He informed the city that we wouldn't be needing their garbage pick up service and they told him it was a city requirement that we have their garbage service, weather or not we put anything in their cans. WTH?

We went through all the appeals, had a lawyer send a letter for us, but in the end we still had to pay the monthly city garbage bill. We still had to keep the dumpster, because with all the scrap glass, etc. the city garbage can was not big enough. BTW, this was in the 80's, before recycling started.

GOLDIE; I heard on TV last night that the airlines were lowering some fares and that Delta was going to spruce up their planes...so you might be in luck. Be careful if TINA books for you and they know that you know her cause you may end up sitting on the wing j/s/

J/L: Ok..first of all...you have a rat in your yard??? I would freak out (right SHIRLEY). Why do you have rats where you live?" I would have to move and the second, you catch it yourself and put it in a bag...yuck!! And where are all those cats during the rat day..aren't they supposed to keep those kind of things away> We had a mouse (saw the signs) in the garage and I will barely go out there without peeking at the traps first.

TINA; Your snow keeps missing us or you are making it up so we will feel sorry for you..which is it? I was watching ET last night and they were in Park City and it looked so beautiful.

BACHELOR FANS: What did you think about last nights show? I thought is was a pretty big surprise and I did not like who received the last rose last night!!!

Dianne/Denver said...

J/L; Our garbage in included in our Hoa so I have no idea what the price is but we can leave as much as we want out there. They give us two of those large carts for weekly pickups.

MEDICAL INFORMATION SO YOU MAY JUST WANT TO SKIP:

Went to the dentist and he had to prep tooth in front of bad one for the bridge, prep the one behind bad one for the bridge (of one tooth) and then pull the bad one. I was there for over two hours and had many shots. I even asked for more, which is a first for me. After they were getting ready to fit the temp bridge there was something "stuck" the dentist realized that some of the root was still there...more shots and then pull. It was not fun. It is hurting more now but I just took my pain meds so I am catching up FB, Farm and blog and then to bed I go. Oh yea, with my insurance my cost was $3180 but they gave me three months to pay with 1000 needing paid today...now wasn't that kind of them? Plus the 1000 go the root canal dr for the canal last week on the tooth that was just pulled.

SHIRLEY; Can you send me some or all of the bail money for my dentist, please?

Ok...over and out for now.

JODI: How did you do with work or is it tonight you go back? Be careful ....please.

One more thing----guess you might as well put the rat in that playpen you are all relaxing in j/s

sacBarb said...

Tina, congrats on first again. So, why didn't you go to Atlanta?

I am just popping in before I go to the grossry store. I have some last minute things to get for a dinner our sorority is having tonight to entertain another chapter. So I will probably be back late tonight.I am TiVo-ing AI.

Dianne, I hope you survived your dentist appointment and you are resting peacefully. Take the drugs!

I hope everyone else with injuries or illnesses is mending/healing.

Have a good day!

Dianne, I guess we were typing at the same time. I'm glad you survived. Get some rest and again, take the drugs.

J/LIN: I hate garbage day with wind or rain. Mr Z takes the garbage bin out..but I bring it in..and it can be really difficult when we have weather! Our garbage bins have hinged lids and wheels..but they are top heavy..so it the thing falls over..it's a pain to get it upright again. We pay a flat fee for trash pick-up and even if the can is so full the lid is only half closed..they'll empty it. Once every three months we have bulk trash pick up..you can put as much out as you like and they'll haul it away.

I'm still cleaning out the garage today..and I've been taking out 2x4's, plywood, scrap pieces of wood..I didn't know there was so much out there! I never thought I'd say this..but I've had my fill of wood and studs today!! ;)

Loved your blog J/LIN..sorry you have a rat that doesn't seem to want to leave you..I think we've all had one of those in our lives though..ijs..!

Dianne/Denver said...

ZONA; I think I have a "few" but they only had two legs night again

Zona said...

TINA: Congrats on FIRST! I hope the ice has melted..if not..take it slow going home..at least slow for you..you know..about 60 or so.. ;)

MARY: We have a bin for recycled stuff that goes out once a week..it is included with the trash pick up cost..I'm not sure how much that is though. We use to take aluminum cans in for cash..but they are only paying about 12 cents a pound now..so in the recycle bin they go!

LYNND: I second your well wishes to those ill or hurt..and I want to add that I hope those that are healthy and unhurt stay that way!

GOLDIE: Is it ok if I give you some more sympathy anyway? I sure hope you're up and dancin' on tables again soon! :)

SACBARB: Is that the same neighbor who comes over occasionally to drill? Good to hear he chases your can too.. ;)

DIANNE: Once this heals..the pain will be gone for good..thank goodness! Get some rest..I hope you feel better soon!

Waving HI to CAROL, BONACHI and BEAR!

Just_Lin said...

Dianne I am sooo sorry it turned into such an ordeal today for you. I forgot about the prepping of the teeth that will anchor your bridge. When I had my bottom 14 teeth pulled, I was at the dentist for a couple of hours, too, and had so many shots I lost count. At one point, I asked if I had hundreds of shots and he replied, "probably". That is the worst part for me. Hate the shots! I am glad I will never have to do that again.

I live at the foot of a mountain with lots of trees. There are all sorts of critters roaming about at night, including rats, that may come into our yards. Add to that, my weird neighbor whose backyard looks like a city dump, literally. I am sure there plenty of rats making their home there. Because of birdseed spilled out of my bird feeder, rats have decided to come clean it up at night. They used to come in groups, honestly, and even though it was down in the yard and not near my house, it really was unacceptable so I started trapping them in a trap that electrocutes them, then I just dump them into a garbage bag. I have gotten so many that I only see one on occassion now, but I still want to "get them" because I don't want the population to grow again. I realize I could stop feeding the birds (I do bring the feeder in at night) but I really enjoy seeing all the different types that come to feed.

I don't know about our refuse...I was going to ask but I forgot.....but I think if there was a rat in it I would have heard....omg...

J/l....why didn't you wait until the storm had passed to go out and gather your things?

the bedhead and cowboy boots are too funny.....

But I have to tell you what you made me think of....

Melissa Manchester......and her song "Come in From The Rain"...and how much I enjoy her singing....I have been listening to her all day......Thanks for the blast from the past!!

Just_Lin said...

I have some kind of tendonitis thing going on in my left forearm right by my elbow. I can't even reach up into the cupboard and pick up a saucer without it hurting big time. I don't think I can count that compared to the other wounds and injuries suffered by the other owls as I am not on meds or wearing a sling.

Just_Lin said...

DeeDee The storm was going on all day plus, the way the wind whips through here, there's no telling where the can and lid could have ended up. I could have never seen the lid again.

Zona said...

J/LIN: I had tendonitis years ago..it hurts so bad..and they never did figure out what caused it. The doctor told me I should have come in for a cortisone shot..maybe that would help you?

BONACHI: Mr Z had out patient surgery..so he was allowed to go home 14 hrs after entering the hospital..about an hour after surgery. When the table fell and he instinctively pulled his hand back..the top knuckle and above was ripped off. They weren't able to re-attach it because it was so mangled. He's doing better..and is going to try and work 6 hrs Wednesday.

I just got done making dinner..successfully..no alarms or smoke! yay! :D

Zona said...

DEEDEE: I always liked Melissa Manchester's song "Midnight Blue".."Don't Cry Out Loud" is good too..I haven't heard either in a long time..I'll have to youtube them..

Just_Lin said...

Zona I'm going to try to wait it out. It started to get better but then I over-used it again. I need to be more mindful of it and stop doing stuff that makes me hurt it all over again. I guess I'm a slow learner. :)

I can't believe Mr. Z is going to go back to work tomorrow. That finger must hurt like a mofo.

Lynn D said...

Hey Gang I would like to say I would rather have a dead rat stuck in my garbage can than have to sit through another meeting. I hate them! Round and round the discussions go with no end in sight. Today I am sick of being a mediator. I had to force the focus and cut through the bullshit and get to the chase. It made me think about Mr. D's family, they get together and then everyone makes a suggestion where to go for dinner but nobody will make a descision as to which one go to. Round and round, just f'n pick McDonalds and call it good already.

I swear I could feel my last estrogen hormone screaming as it was dying off and I just had an overwhelming urge to slap the shit out of someone. I would also like to say quit blowing smoke up my ass and calling it an air enema. Hmmmm I think I am cranky.

Then I thought well I am in the big city, what amounts to that anyway compared to where I live, I will go do some shopping before I go home. So I hit the Fred Meyer, go in buy some things finally relaxing a bit come out and they have part of the damn parking lot cordoned off with crime scene tape and police cars with flashing lights everywhere. WTH? I debate whether I want or even need to know what is going on and decide I don't want to know and head for my car I just want to go home before the bullets start flying.

Get in my car and realize I am freaking trapped. As a police car is parked across the end of my aisle and I can't get out. I sat there for a half hour and they finally moved the damn police car. I am never shopping at Fred Meyer again! I still don't know what was going on and I still just don't care. I suppose it will be on the news tonight but I am not going to watch.

I told you guys I was getting afraid to leave my house well this day might have just sealed that deal for me.

Just_Lin said...

LynnD Sounds like your day was just a tiny bit stressful. I hope you are able to unwind and let it go. We must have some jello shots around here.

Just Lin, here in Nova Scotia the cost of garbage collection is part of what taxes are paid for. In my town (in the winter) the garbage is collected every two weeks (every week in the summer). Thursday for the south end of town and Friday for the north end of town. They usually pick up the organic first and then the regular and finally the recycled stuff. We have a spring and Fall cleanup where you can get rid of cars, freezers ect. Electronics are taken to another place for recycling. None of this costs anything.

Shirley have a great day! Thanks for the morning smiles. Oh and could you add a mental health clinic to the agenda? I think I may need one soon.

Sorry for my post last night kids but I needed to vent and I know that you guys would let me. I was and am feeling overwhelmed by all of the bad, mean and horrible things people do to each other. Whether it is small or big.

The meeting yesterday was about non communication and no one wanting to take a minute and accept there part in tit for tat and trying to find a compromise.

The parking lot thing was the last straw yesterday. I decided I did not want to know because I just knew it was going to be something awful and I was on over load. I think what triggered that reaction was a bank robbery that occured less than 20 minutes from my house in a neighboring town yesterday. It is just all getting to scary and sad.

I would like to go to bed and just pull the covers over my head but can't and today is going to be another long one. So I must try to center and put on my game face. I just don't think there will be enough makeup in the world to cover my disappointment in my fellow man and woman this morning. :)
