County Fair

by Mary/MI

Mr Mary & I went to our county fair this afternoon. It was hot, dirty and humid. We walked forever, ate wonderful nasty "fair food", looked at many art exhibitions, and listened to musicians.  We went through a large Merchants building that had many booths like fudge, jam, those pots you can't live without, jewelry, and sooo many doo- dads lol!  We try to go a few times to help keep the county fair from disappearing.

I love to see the faces of the little children. There is dust, sweat, and some very strange people walking around, kinda like those Walmart pics you see on the internet lol!  It's like they say, "what can we wear that will totally offend someone" lol!

I love the amateur stage shows. There is one I am going to next week "Elvis Idol."  Can't get more hokier than that!

Many ,many years ago they had freak & girly shows. I never went to the freak shows. I always wondered if there really was an alligator woman, two headed man, or the man that swallowed nails and other crap!

I truly hope the county fairs never disappear.  They at least give the kids an escape from the virtual world and a few hours of music, fun smells and of course, all those "Walmart people lol!!

Will you be going to a county fair? Do you have fun memories from them?

Did I mention I like to hang around the barn where they keep the Stallions? ;-)

Mary! I love your blog. I love FAIRS..and we go to the State Fair usually and I grew up on County Fairs..that is where my Mom and Dad MET, was at the Delaware County Fair..back when they had sock hops and that was all the kids had. I don't think they will ever go away because people need fairs!

Love Love LOVE your blog.

DeeDee said...

Good morning Tina and Bebbi.....sniff....is that fish I smell?

I agree..."Come to the fair and SMELL the excitment!!"

Its always especially fragrant around the children's pony rides....and the petting barn....oh! and don't be fooled by that! Its for petting farm animals.

I personally always got the biggest kick out of the freak shows...

One year I went into one to see a half spider half woman.....there was this huge spider body with a live womans head.....and people were stunned...standing around looking and ohh-ing and ahh-ing and theres DeeDee laughing her ass off...she was obviously sitting underneath with her head poking thru a hole....lol

the spider head looked at me like wtf biotch! I told her...I was just picturing your resume....

Experience: Spider head.....baaahaaaaaaa!!!

They really got me on that sideshow...but the laughs and the spider heads sense of humor.... priceless...

And I am always "HOT" for the carny workers....there is just something about the 20 to 28ish ones....no shirts....all those tattoos....just oozing gonorrhea and hepatitis C...once I guessed how many teeth one had that were gone or rotten correctly and won a "CUPIE DOLL!!!"

And the food....I LOVE those sausage sandwiches with the sautéed onions and bell peppers!!! ...yum!!

One of my fondest memories is of my friend Denise. She and I were walking around the midway and as we passed this ride...I think it was called the spider...it had these long arms with swirling seats on the end that twirled around as the arms twirled in a different direction....very exciting looking...

Well! As we passed it something hit Denise. Something high speed!! Upon some investigation we realized that what had hit her hair and one side of her outfit was....vomit. Yes vomit from someone on that ride we had just passed.

And what are ya gonna do? The restrooms are so filthy you run the risk of contracting the ebola virus if you go in there....and I wasn't letting her in my car with that puke all over her......

Well thankfully a nice carny worker lady took her back to her motor home and helped her get cleaned up at least enough that I could take her home.....

I can't wait for the next one!! How bout choo!!??

I'm blogging whilst eating... thanks for that colorful story, DeeDee. I'll be sure and return the favor.

I can't say I know precisely what a "fair" is. I've been to Pow-Wows. No rides, but lots of food and crafts. I think I learned what an Elephant Ear was in here. Never had one myself.

Afternoon Tina, Bebbi, DeeDee and Bonachichi!

Mary here in Nova Scotia we call them Exhibitions. The Shelburne Exhibition is coming up next week. It will start with a parade on Tuesday evening. There will be rides and games and display table table. It isn't anything like it use to be years ago. We use to have floats in the parade from all over the province. The crafts, food and art exhibits were housed in a separate building. Now as the town grows smaller the Exhibition barely breaks even. Businesses don't put floats in cause no one wants to work on them for free. There is so little money around it makes it difficult. But I do remember saving my money to go to the Exhibition when I was a kid. Not much for the rides though. I use to like the games. I won a pink hippo once and named him Fred!

DeeDee isn't this etteque (sp) Monday? Well anyway my question is:

In the summer you sometime hear from old friends you haven't heard from in years. They announce (not ask) that they are coming to visit you. You hope and assume that they are staying in a hotel, but they arrive with a brood of kids (their kids wanted to bring a friend with them) two big tents that they proceed to put up on your front lawn, and a husband right out of Animal House!! My question is...they have an extremely homely baby which they think is just the cutest thing, and ask you "isn't she just the cutest (oh, it's a girl)?"...what should you say?

DeeDee said...

Y yes Shirley ..it is

ETIQUETTE TIP O THE DAY

and thank you for asking and submitting your excellent question....

First and foremost...try not to get startled and "jump" when you look at the baby...

Be gracious to your guests because YOU let it happen....offer a pork chop to tie around the childs neck so the dogs will play with her.....thats always a nice touch...

And its very astute of you to realize that this is indeed a baby....I had a similar situation once and as Cook was preparing to go to the market I reminded her to get our guests monkey some bananas....
The Mother said..."we didn't bring a monkey!"

and I said "well whats that you're holding over there then?"

Very embarrassing for them....but then again...they did leave rather quickly....

Good afternoon Hooters! We have been very busy here working on a new patio project. One of those that start out small, and turn into a BIG project! If men spent as much time working as they do "discussing" it, they would get done a lot sooner! ijs!

Thanks for all the fun comments. DeeDee you did not let me down lol, but glad I wasn't eating at the time! You are so right about the carnies! Now they make them wear nice clean shirts. Not bad til you get close and smee them and they give you that goofey toothless smile!

I prolly won't be back until tonight. I have a meeting tonight and get started on tomorrow's birthday cake and enchilada meal for my son Tony. He turned 44 today. He just told me today that he moved out of his new beautiful home. His wife "wanted space". I know she is just stringing him along , but he is just too nice to realize it. Today (his b-day) she asked him to watch the dog while she goes to Cedar Point in Ohio. That is why he can't come over today. I will have a hard time keeping my lips sealed, but I will try......

Shirley, I watched the vid that you sent DeeDee, it was wonderful! I loved the music that went with it too! Makes me want to fly there, bring my dog and camp out in your yard... no ugly baby :(
Waving at Bebbi & Bonachi~~

bonachichi said...

OMG, a monkey! That's so funny! I mean um, not for the kid or mother of course... But so funny!!

Mary, tell your son to explain life to that stupid bitch. Space? My arse. Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be a woman. She either wants to split or she doesn't. No wonder men think we're insane.

AFTERNOON Hooters.....MARY: Great blog. My ex and I never missed the State Fair in Colorado. It is in Pueblo, so we always spent the night down there...even tough it was with the "ex" it does bring back fun memories. We would spend the whole day there and end with the big concert and fireworks that night. They always had someone famous for the Sat night concert. We ate all that yummy food and bought some of that fun junk people sold....I think I am still using the knives.

I am waiting for MRD to get back from his Starbucks run to take me to PT. I go to today and Wed and then to DR on Thursday and maybe (hopefully) get boot off. This has been the longest summer of my life and I don't mean that in a good way!!!

Need to go he is here so hello to all of you and thinking of each and every one of you.

Happy Monday Owls.

Mary, Since I live in the capitol city, we have both the State Fair and the County Fair. I much prefer the County Fair. It is smaller and not as commercial, but it has all the good (junk) food. My Hubby and I used to go every year. He and my boys used to play those games that gave stuffed animals as prizes and one year my Hubby won so many, he was banned from the midway games. That was also the year he won two HUGE stuffed dogs that we had to carry around the rest of the day. That thing was almost as tall as I am and I bitched the whole time, ungrateful wench that I am. I have only been a few times since he died. My friends are duds and they don't like to go and I don't like to go alone.

sacBarb said...

Tina, I see you are moaning at first again.

Di, I hope you are able to get rid of that boot this week.

Waving a wing to all the other Owls. I hope you all are having a good day.

Bebbilane said...

DeeDee: LOL at "hot for the carnie workers"...EW! And you think I smell like fish..they usually have not showered in WEEKS..haha.

Dianne: Hope your PT goes well. I am sorry this has been a long bummer of a summer. :(

Evening Glories!

Tina is moaning at first.

Mary, I love this blog. I love county fairs. I love the crappy food, say scone and I am there, I love to see the 4H kids and the animals they have raised. The bunnies and chickens, piggies and more.

The rides and midway fit in there too. It is the best. You walk and gawk and just have fun!

Yes I will be going to our county fair and maybe the one in the next county as it is about the same time.

Tina~in_ut said...

ya know, Bebbi~ You made me think.....I bet those carnies LOVED DeeDee's fish smell~ ijs~ :D

Dianne/Denver said...

DEEDEE: I have another Etiquette Question of the Day:

What if you are at PT and the therapist tells you to lift your leg, he is standing right there and my tummy is a rummbling? I was very nervous that the rumbling was going to come tumbling out right where he was standing....not this time but what if that would happen? Thank you in advance for your help.

Dianne/Denver said...

Only one more time of PT and then start next week using weight bearing. He told me today that I would probably go from boot and no walker or walker and no boot...Hmmm, what a great choice...how about NO BOOT AN NO WALKER???

I am getting MrD to take me to dinner tonight as I am getting tired of take out. Big night tonight on Bachelor and rumor has it that Ali picks no one....what do you Bachelor fans think? My GD thinks she will go with Jake from last show....boy I hope not!! I will have to watch it recorded so I won't be able to look at one thing until I watch it so I won't find out the answer. Can you all see how damn exciting my life has become...?

sacBarb said...

Di, The commercials for the show seem to indicate that Ali may not choose either Roberto or Chris, but they always try to build it up to something, then the show is a let down. I certainly the rumors about Jake aren't true. I seems like he turned out to be a real jerk.

East Bay J said...

Hi hooters!

Mary, I haven't been to a fair in sooo long. Last one was the Alameda County fair, I'm guessing 15 years ago.

Used to go to the Marin County fair every year.

My best friend Lisa and I befriended a couple carneys one year. They were really nice guys, one stayed in touch for years. He was putting himself thru school and ended up with a very good job.

I am really upset about your son. I hate hearing that his wife is being so awful to him.

She needs a good bitch slap.

Tell him happy birthday for me!

I also think Ali will not pick anyone tonoght. If she does, I hope it's Chris.

I agree Barb, Jake did turn out to be an assh*le.

Yes, I will be watching Bachelor Pad when it starts next week!

Di I think a stomach rumble would be ok, it's a big fart that I would worry about.

If the stomach rumbles you can just say "oh I haven't eaten anything yet today".

A fart might be a little harder, or embarassing, to explain.

We got shrimp burritos from our favorite Mexican restaurant for dinner tonight, yum.

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Dianne and SacBarb I don't know how you can watch those shows! They are soooooo bad!! Enjoy your evening!

Well I'm off to bed. I have a doctor appointment and grocery shopping to do tomorrow. I try to get everything done in one day, then I don't have to go out again. I know, I'm going back to my isolation ways, but it's what I want for now. Nighty night Owls!

DeeDee said...

Well I see Shirleys got another trip to Cambodia slated.....

Dianne..Dianne...Dianne....

Don't borrow trouble honey! Thats all you have had for the last year...Hoof or Mouth Disease! You have been firmly implanted in a dentists chair or a wheelchair....

You deserve a healthcare free couple of years now....

And I hate to tell you this but...now that you have dreamed it you are prolly going to do it...so either wear a diaper to your last PT session or wear some shoes you don't care about....

And go ahead and have some shrimp burritos prior to your appointment....if ur going to blow you may as well go for the gold medal....kwim?

Oh! And take a rug that Mr. D can just roll you up in to transport you afterwards....and when he gets you home he can just hose you down in the yard....

Good evening feathered friends!

MARY...I haven't been to a fair in a trillion years. I am a wimp and don't like to walk around in the hot humid summer air. To go at night and get eaten alive by mosquitos doens't thrill me either! I guess I am a "dud", like SACBARB's friends!

SHIRLEY...There are days, many of them, that I would rather not leave the house. Just hibernate.

DIANNE...that was my biggest fear when I had PT! And my PT was GORGEOUS! It would have been doubly embarassing!

Mary/MI said...

Bonachi, my feelings exactly!

LynnD,I have yet to see one scone at any of our fairs! :(

SacBarb,I'd go to the fair with you! I'd go anywhere with you!! :):)

EBJ, I know not all carnies are bad. My son worked with the fair every summer until he graduated. Hwent all over with them. New Mexico, Iowa,Ohio, to NJ. Friends of ours owned the giant coke,Pepsi cans and root beer stand. They would make thousands in one stand alone each day. They lived in a nice home in the burbs of White Bear Lake Minnesota.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am off to the Monday night fights on FB ;-)

Maureen said...

MARY...I'm sorry your DIL is being like that to your son. I'm sure you'll make his day tomorrow a special one.

Maureen said...

If anyone in the east watched the Bachelorette, email the results!!

Maureen said...

DEE DEE...here's my etiquette question:

You have been standing in line for evah and there is only 1 cash register open. Someone walks up behind you and 30 seconds later another cashier arrives. She calls for the next person and the skank that has waited all of 30 seconds heads for the cash register. Would it be ok to trip her, ram her with your cart or call her every effing name in the book and shame her back to the end of the line to wait her turn?

(I tell the 2nd person in my line to go as they have been waiting the longest!)

DeeDee said...

Maureen...

It would be perfectly acceptable to trip her...pull her back where she belongs by the hair....or any of the methods you listed...

I was with a disabled friend one day in the parking lot at Walmart waiting patiently for a car to back out of a handicapped space when a woman whipped into the space ahead of us.....I walked over to her and she jumped out of her SUV and told her that I was with someone who is truly handicapped and that we had been waiting for that space.....she said "TOUGH!!".....

I said..."Well you fucking bitch!"...and she said..."thats what they call me!" ...and as she walked away I said..."well they're going to be calling you 4 flat tires after you leave here!"

After we had been in the store for about 15 minutes I paid 3 boys $20 each to let the air out of her tires....

When we left her SUV was still sitting there...just closer to the ground.....

Maureen said...

Don't even get me started on people that are not handicapped parking in the hanicapped spaces!

Sharon took the handicapped placard from Joanne's car and carries it in her purse. She is always trying to get me to park in the handicapped spaces. Ain't gonna happen.

DEE DEE...thanks for the insight!

So Mary, what are ya saying, you like looking at those "Italian" Stallions..

:)

We have one country fair every yr at the end of June that is set up at the Meadowlands (where Giant Stadium is located). I have never went but my nephews used to go, and they seemed to enjoy themselves.. I am not even sure why I did not go.. I guess its not my thing.. or I so often go to the boardwalk at the Jersey shore, so I can all my nasty delish food there..

night.owls.sb said...

Mo.. you should have done what Zona likes to do.. kick her in the shins.. but easy tho..

Dianne/Denver said...

Ok...I admit it, I love that show and cry too

night.owls.sb said...

Shirley..

Great pic for SMV.. love Diana and that song..

night.owls.sb said...

I just read SacBarbs comment and realized the fair at the meadowlands is a State Fair and not a country fair.. I don't think we have country fairs here in this area..

night.owls.sb said...

Mary.. sorry what your son is going tho.. when these things happen its a awful feeling cause you have to bite your lip and hope for the best.. I remember when my brother left my SIL, the feelings of dread filled me to the brim.. and I to bit my lip, and just hoped.. and actually things did turn out for the best, and everyone found peace..

night.owls.sb said...

Ok.. so I see I am typing country instead of county.. Calgon needs to take me away.. :O)

Just_Lin said...

Tina I heard you moaning all the way over here. Congrats on being so darn purdy.

Mary I tend to not go to the fairs. It just isn't my thing, I guess. I used to dance at the LA County Fair when I was about 13.

Dianne It's been a long, hard summer for you but keep hanging in there. You are coming into the home stretch.

Waving at LynnD, SacBarb, Bebbi, DeeDee, Shirley, Bonach, EBJ, and Magnificent MO. By the way MO, I wouldn't use that placard either. Very bad mojo to use that when you don't need it. You know what they say about karma. She's a bitch!

night.owls.sb said...

Things are moving along.. Dad is still hanging in there.. one more test to go thru and then we will know... Work is not getting any easier.. I am pulled in 17 different directions all the time.. I have found a couple of mistakes that I made, but thank goodness I was able to fix them before the client even knew.. whew!!!!

My 50th BBQ, is almost all ready, I just have to get a couple more things on Friday nite..and then Saturday set it all up.. The Party Place is bringing the Tent, table and chairs on Friday.. so Saturday all we have to do is set up.. Spoke with the caterer today and all is set they will be at my home at 5p on Saturday.. I am looking forward to it.. It should be fun.. I have a couple ppl roasting me so it will be LOL to see what they have to say..

Finally.. after three long months something to look forward to..

Lets just hope there are no hiccups..

Just_Lin said...

Hi, Carol!!! Didn't see you slip in there.

Shirley I really enjoyed Dianna yesterday. What a great diva and a great song.

night.owls.sb said...

Mo.. my dad has a placard, and I never use it unless he is with me.. sometimes If I am with my mom and I know the parking will be terrible I use it with her.. I hate when ppl use the placards when they are not with the person who needs it..

Hi J/L.. you flew in while I was typing..

and btw Shirley.. if you can count them up and see which day would be out 1000th that would be great, cause I have to borrow Goldies's stilettos..

EBJ: LOL at your talking about farting and then mentioning burritos.. They always do that to me..hehe.

Okay..I am going to read over all the stuff more but DeeDee..LOL at letting out the air to the tires.

I have really been working on my patience and not getting upset with people about going ahead and stuff. I have found that it keeps me in a better place not to get all miffed about other people. I just keep trying to think that maybe they have a reason to be in that big of a hurry and I try to let it go. Attitude is everything.
