How much do YOU pay?

by Shirley
I 've been wondering for a while now how much things cost where you all live. So I decided to do a blog about it. (Jodi thought it would be a good idea too) I'm going to give you a list of products and I would like to know what you pay for them in your local grocery store. I will put the price that I pay next to the item. I hope I have the sizes right, cause I had to covert from metric. Which brings me to the question...Why isn't America using the Metric System like everyone else? Just wondering. Hope you enjoy this little shopping excursion!

loaf of white /ww bread - $2.69
1 lb bananas - .89
family size Rice Krispies - $5.69
1/2 gallon of 1% milk - $3.91
1 doz lg white eggs - $2.66
1 lb bacon - $4.79
whole fresh chicken - $2.49/lb
frozen pizza (Delissio) - $7.49
Kraft dinner - $1.39
Heinz Ketchup 36oz bottle - $3.89
1/2 gallon bottle diet Pepsi - $2.39 + .10 for deposit + 15% tax
1 gallon of reg. gas - $4.25

DeeDee: (from Area 51 or so)I hope you were able to get your tooth fixed. I just read that and I hope that the dentist was able to take care of it for you. :)

DeeDee said...

good morning.....

couldn't fix the tooth....but he made me a temporary "flipper"...?

I am going to have to have an implant. All my teeth are capped and its time to redo them all anyway....and its the only way to get a perfect match....so needless to say I am in for some major cosmetic dentistry starting next week.....if there are any more "iffy" real under the crowns...like the one that broke....those will be removed and replaced with implants as well.....

I guess you could say I am having my mouth "overhauled".....

We are talking 28 teeth so its going to be very time consuming...and expensive...so PLEASE eat your CORN!!!

DeeDee said...

Shirley...I have to sit this one out....its not my area....

But I did see a sign last night advertising the price of gas at $254....I don't know how much you get for that amount of money but I feel sure its a Phillip or two....

I did however notice that you didn't include corn on your list....

The potato deal in Idaho fell thru so my idea for a hybrid...the Corntato....is still in the works...

Bebbilane said...

DeeDee: Just for you and to help your cause, I will serve corn at my Thanksgiving meal tomorrow..! So, hopefully, that will help get your cosmetic dentistry done. :)

I hate those issues..so painful and so embarassing. When I was 18 I was in a bad car accident. It was the morning that Princess Di walked down the aisle with Prince Charles. Well, they WOKE ME UP in intensive care to watch a princess walk down the aisle with her prince. All I could do was lay there with tube sticking in my mouth and my tongue sliding over my lips wondering if I still had all my teeth. So, I have always vowed to take really good care of my teeth because I appreciate them.

I hope everyone has a great day today and hello to all those who fly by.

Good Morning!

SHIRLEY: I'm not going near the grocery store today..it was crazy there yesterday, I can just imagine what it'll be like today on Thanksgiving eve! I did go to the Safeway website and check out prices..and they seemed to be close to what I usually see when I'm at the store..so here ya go..

loaf of white /ww bread - $2.69
1 lb bananas - .49
family size Rice Krispies - $3.69
1/2 gallon of 1% milk - $1.89
1 doz lg white eggs - $1.79
1 lb bacon - $3.99
whole fresh chicken - Couldn't find..and I don't buy but I've seen it for .79 a lb
frozen pizza (DiGiorno) - $4.99
Kraft dinner - $1.09
Heinz Ketchup 36oz bottle - $2.99
1/2 gallon bottle diet Pepsi - $1.09 for 2liter no deposit or extra tax
1 gallon of reg. gas - $2.72

We have a lot of good sales here and I rarely pay these prices for these items..well except for gas..you're kinda at their mercy there!

Fun blog Shirley!!

BEBBI: Hello Gorgeous! Put your shoulder pads on when you go to the store tonight!! ;)

DEEDEE: I'm sorry to hear about your tooth..or teeth as it now seems. I do not like the dentist. Just remember this age old advice when you're in that chair..think of rainbows, unicorns and puppies..or, you might try George Clooney, Ewan McGregor and Hugh Grant..it works just as well. ;)

I'll be serving corn tomorrow too..chaaaa-chinnggg! :D

Oh, how fun. A grocery blog. Shirley I have to ask; Is diesel popular in Canada? Also, do your grocery stores require a deposit for the carts and ask that you weigh and label your produce before going to the checkout?

I shop at Coop in Italy, and we have to insert a €1 coin before we can take a cart. We get it back when we return the cart to where we got it.

And we have to weigh our produce, entering the proper code, print a price sticker and put it on the bag. The cashiers don't do this for you. Never forget to do this. There is nothing quite like holding up a cashier line with several angry Italians behind you.

I don't take notice of many prices, but fuel is one that I do. We have gasolio (diesel) and benzina (unleaded). Benzina is $6-$7/gallon so you see, Americans aren't the only ones taking it up the arse.

I look forward to reading about everyone's prices as well as your shopping experiences.

I have so much to do today and I woke up with a stupid headache!! I took some aspirin and I'm drinking a DC..and it's starting to get better..thank goodness!

BEBBI: DC first thing this morning out of necessity..then on to the H2O! :D

BEAR: Have a wonderful time in PS! It's going to be a bit nippy at night..but that's good cuddling weather! :)

JODI: I'm making your apple crisp tomorrow..yummmmmy!

TINA: I'm glad your son got home safely! I bet he doesn't do one thing to upset you..not one! ;)

Lots to do..Have a nice Thanksgiving Eve everyone!

Zona: I will have full body armor on for sure tonight. It will be a mad house.

Also, way to go on the water. I am having diet coke too but I had a couple of bottles of water this morning and will have more this afternoon.

Shirley, MR. EBJ does most of our grocery shopping, so I will have to ask him about the prices when he gets home from work.

This morning I went by a station where I sometimes get gas, it was $3.05 per gallon.

There is another station that we go to which was $2.97 a few days ago.

Hope everyone has a warm, safe Thanksgiving. It's been in the 20s here at night.

The white bread, bananas, milk, and eggs are our everyday low prices at Kwik Trip!! For the most part they beat most grocery store prices!! I just got back from getting a few things from our small grocery store in Oregon. The Kraft Mac N Cheese was on sale, so that was a really good price!!

SHIRLEY - I loved our conversation about this. It will be fun to see what everyone else has to say!!

BEBBI - You are gorgeous today!!

DEE DEE - Sorry we're not serving corn tomorrow. I'm bringing the requisite green bean casserole. I did purchase some popcorn today, though. I hope that helps ;)

ZONA - Hope the apple crisp turns out...I'm sure it will!! Enjoy ♥

BONACHICHI - Love your description of grocery shopping in Italy!!

EBJ - Been very cold here at night, too. Raining like a mofo when I was coming out of the store. They're calling for freezing rain/sleet/snow mixture tonight....yikes!!! Thankfully I'm prepared with the YACKTRAX that ZONA bought me!!

Good Thanksgiving Eve feathered friends!

SHIRLEY...interesting blog! Since my change in social status, my shopping has changed tremendously. I shop at a lot of off-price stores and Aldi's quite a bit. At Aldi's you have to deposit a quarter to get a cart and if you don't bring your own bags you have to pay for them.

2 litre bottle of DC...on sale for 1.25 or 1.89 reg price
(I buy off brands for about .75 a 2 litre)
Off brand bread..99 - 1.29
Gas...tonight it was 2.89 / gallon
Bananas....49/ pound (.38 at one of the discount places)

I am always pissed at the price of cereal, especially the name brands. When I do buy it, I buy house brands for about 2/3rds of the price.

I buy a lot of the little cans of tuna for lunches and I get them 3/1.47 and in the regular grocery they are 3/3.50.

If I buy frozen pizza it is the Value Time and they are a buck each. They are small and they are enough for a dinner for one!

I also will buy Michelena's Lean frozen dinners instead of WW or Lean Cuisine. They are usually on sale for $1.00 each vs. 2.50 or more.

When I buy chicken or meat I only buy the stuff that is near expiration and is reduced in price. As long as I cook it that day (and then freeze if needed) it is just fine and a great savings.

This is a freaking novel!!

DEE DEE... I think we are having a corn souffle casserole tomorrow...my contribution to your cause!

loaf of white /ww bread - $2.67
1 lb bananas - .59
family size Rice Krispies - $4.39 (but I buy the store brand of Corn Flakes and got it for $1.89 this week....bought 3!~)
1/2 gallon of 1% milk - $1.59
1 doz lg white eggs - $1.09
1 lb bacon - $3.00
whole fresh chicken - $.89/lb
frozen pizza (Delissio) - 2 for $11
Kraft dinner - $.79
Heinz Ketchup 36oz bottle - $1.25
12 pack Diet Pepsi - $2.50
1 gallon of reg. gas - $2.67

Shirley~ I refuse to pay more for some things.....Diet Pepsi is the perfect example.....it always costs $4.99 for a 12 can pack. But I will only buy it when it's "on sale" for $2.50......to me, that's the "regular" price~ kwim?~

Bebbi~ Congrats on first....so pretty~

DeeDee~ my check's in the mail.....on Friday~ mwah~

Hello to everyone~ I haven't killed the kid yet....yay!!! Of course, he went out tonight~ We all got haircuts today to look good for the family picture my daughter has to take of us tomorrow. The part I have a hard time with is that none of us get dressed on Thanksgiving.....we don't shower and never get out of our jammies......so this picture will be just so precious....and it's for her photography class~ ugh~ off to make an apple pie~ (don't faint anyone~)

Tina~in_ut said...

Mary~ that's weird....I didn't feel any lumps~ :)~

Hi, Tina!

Shirley, I pay so little attention to food prices that I have absolutely no idea!

But speaking of US/Canada cultural differences, interesting that nobody batted an eye over "Kraft Dinner"! Jim always gives a hard time over that, since it's a Canadian label for what he calls "Macaroni and Cheese"!

Zona: We're here! The drive was uneventful, bit it certainly is chilly. We're sipping on our first cocktails of the day (sorry, Tina!) before heading out to a gay bar to meet friends.

I am NOT an alcoholic, I just play one in Palm Springs! LOL!

Thank you all for participating in todays blog. I enjoyed reading the comments. Congrats on 1st Bebbi!

Bonachi we have diesel, but other than trucker I don't know how popular it is.

I don't have to pay for a cart, but I believe you do in some parts of Canada. There are also some places that charge .05/per plastic bag, if you don't bring the cloth ones.

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

DeeDee when I hear about your dental troubles I start singing "all I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth...". Lol!! I'm sorry, I know it isn't funny but...

Besides I'm sure you have someone to chew your food for you anyway, right?

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

So you guys don't have to pay deposit and tax on your pop/soda when you buy it? Gas seems a lot cheaper in the States too.

How much tax do you pay anyway? Our federal tax is .07 cents and the NS provincial tax is .08 cents.

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

I hope everyone who is celebrating tomorrow has a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving! (((HUGS))) my American friends!!

Thanks for posting my blog Tina!

I miss Dianne, Carol and Goldie!

Lynn keep up the good work and enjoy your smoke free holiday!

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Mary I'm sure everything will be fine next week. Extra ((HUGS)) for you!

Maureen said...

SHIRLEY...some states have a deposit for soda / beer, but not all. I think we did in CA, but in OH we don't.

Our sales tax varies by county. We don't pay sales tax on food, except for "junk food" and soda -- a SIN TAX -- etc... There is no tax on take out food, again except for the soda, but if you eat in there is tax on all of it.

In PA, I know there is no sales tax on clothing, either. Back in the day when I would buy a lot of clothes for summer or winter I would go to the outlet mall in Grove City, PA. It was a nice day out and no clothing tax!

Maureen said...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

I hope you all spend the day with those you love, good food, good conversation and lots of laughter...that is how I will be spending mine. :)

I AM thankful for all you and for Cary Grant!!!

Freaking hell!!!! I had to make a run to the store....and it's 10 degrees~

Shirley~ We don't pay the extra soda tax....but when i'm in CA, I do~

Mo~ Friend went home to Los Angeles this morning~

So is anyone going shopping at 4am tomorrow?

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

DeeDee I'm sorry I teased you about your tooth/teeth. Really I am. Don't be mad. Can't you make one of your "people" give you one of their teeth and then the dentist could just stick it...in your mouth of course. Just a thought. Muah!!

Maureen said...

SHIRLEY...after having spent the majority of my life in retail, you couldn't pay me enough to go shopping on Black Friday!!

I actually have the day off and I am going to stay curled up in bed and watch movies all day! And eat leftovers that I hope my cousin will send home with me...tax free :)

Maureen said...

SHIRLEY...how is your new CPAP? Do ya love it?

Maureen said...

SHIRLEY...since Canada doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving on the same day as we do, do you still have Black Friday sales?

Shirley(NCC-1701) said...

Mo the new CPAP is sooooo much quieter than the other one, you hardly know it's on! Tonight will be my second night with it. I may have to adjust the temp. of the humidifier until I get it where I want it and the mask needs a little adjusting too, but that's all normal stuff.

I think I did see on TV where some stores are having sales, but none of them are here in Shelburne. Enjoy your time off!

Nighty night Owls!!

Maureen said...

Sweet dreams, SHIRLEY.

I am going to curl up with Cary and try to drift off into slumberland and dream of stuffing and turkey and pumpkin pie and...

See ya in the moaning!

Mary, I will definitely be keeping good thoughts and saying a few prayers that all turns out well. SWAK ♥

Shirley, I don't buy most of those things you have listed so I don't know how much they cost. I did fill up my car gas tank yesterday and paid $3.35 for the lowest grade. I have seen it lately for $3.07, but it wasn't at a gas station close to me and I figured by the time I drove there, I would have spent the difference anyway.

In California each city/county has a different sales tax. In Sac I think it is 7.75% and we do pay deposit and tax on soda and even bottled water. I don't like going to the recycling center so I save the cans and bottles and give them to my church who turns them in for the money, which goes to the food bank.

It is interesting to see the difference in prices across the country.

Good night everyone and to all who are celebrating Thanksgiving, have a good one.

Jodi said...

MARY - Sending positive thoughts and prayers for next week....(((hugs))) ♥

SHIRLEY - Glad your CPAP is up and running!! Sales tax is 5% in Wisconsin and an extra .05% in Dane County where I live.

Jodi said...

SHIRLEY - And like MO, we don't have tax on food....just the "junk"!!

Jodi said...

GOLDIE - I'm so sorry....totally forgot to post for you this week. She said to say hi to everyone and to let you know she misses you. Her computer at work got a major virus last week...so no playing there. And her Mom has been staying with her for the last few days, so not a lot of computer time at home ♥

Waving a wing at DIANNE & CAROL....miss u!!!
