What would you do with $11,255,272?

by Shirley

LOWER TRURO — They won $11.2 million from a lottery ticket in July. And now every penny is gone. But Allen and Violet Large didn’t spend any of it on themselves. And that’s just the way they like it.

"What you’ve never had, you never miss," said Violet, 78.

Married since 1974, the Lower Truro couple don’t live large. They don’t travel, they don’t gamble and they don’t buy what they don’t need.

"We have an old house, but we’re comfortable and we’re happy in it," Violet said.

They spent 30 years in Ontario where Allen was a steel welder and Violet worked for cosmetics and chocolate companies. They retired in 1983 and returned to Nova Scotia.

"We were pretty well set, not millionaires, but comfortable," said Allen, 75.

So when they hit it big in Lotto 6-49’s July 14 draw, they decided to give it all away.

All that money "was a big headache," Allen said. Violet said she was concerned about "crooked people" who might try to take advantage of them.

But the big win came at a difficult time in their lives: Violet was undergoing treatment for cancer that doctors discovered in the spring.

"That money that we won was nothing," said Allen, choking back tears. "We have each other."
Violet has been through surgery and finished her last chemotherapy treatment a week ago.

"I’ve been very fortunate not to be bedfast," said Violet, who also pointed to the support of her family and neighbours who bring them meals and keep their spirits up.

"It’s very hard" to watch the woman he married 36 years ago go through so much, Allen said.

"All the money in the world can’t buy your health," he said.

After the win, the couple took about a week to work out the details before embarking on their $11,255,272 spending spree.

They took care of family first and then began delivering donations to the two pages’ worth of groups they had decided on, including the local fire department, churches, cemeteries, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, hospitals in Truro and Halifax, where Violet underwent her cancer treatment, and organizations that fight cancer, Alzheimer’s and diabetes. The list goes on and on.

The couple won’t say how much they gave each group, but they’ve received plenty of phone calls, letters and plaques of gratitude. While they’re thankful for each one, they didn’t do it for the recognition.

"It made us feel good," said Violet. "And there’s so much good being done with that money."

She and her husband said they feel privileged to be able to give back to the community, to help the firefighters, the doctors and nurses and the volunteers who have helped them.

"We’re the lucky ones," Violet said. "I have no complaints."

How many of us would be able to do what this couple did with that much money? I know I wouldn't. I would certainly help people out but I would also spend on myself.

Happy Birthday, Di~

Shirley~ I was going to blog about this too~ Good one~ Hubby and I bought lottery tkts in Washington a couple of weeks ago and still haven't checked the numbers. We told the kids that if we won big, I'd buy the Cricut Imagine and he'd buy some other small thing and then give the rest of the money to the poor. They think they are poor, but they have so much! You should have seen their faces!

Good morning! Gosh, I love this! LOVE it..that is a perfect thing to do and I would do the same. Take care of family first and then give it to the people in this world that need it. Why have a huge fancy house, luxury cars, waste waste.. I am not perfect because I do tend to want to have a little extra spending money and have fun, but I am a giver and money is not what drives me or makes me happy.

Take care and great blog SHIRLEY! :)

Morning Glories!

Tina quit the moaning!

Shirley I love this story. I would help out family and friends in need and pay off my house. I would also designate a portion for charity. This couple is so inspiring. Just love what they did!

I have been busy here. Having a two year old and pregnant woman in the house is taking up a lot of time. Mostly it is the two year old! :)

Happy Birthday Dianne!

Carol yes we are adjusting. I just finished making french toast and scrambled eggs for the thumper (that's what I call Ritchie. I know when he is up by the thump, thump, thump of his splint) I never make these items but he ate it all. I had to pull him off the dishwasher as I did dishes and I know he is trying to help, but trying to unload the glass cups just won't do. Also steak knives are a no no.

Then I caught Seamus our lab mix with the beanie baby teddy bear (green m&m) that Dianne sent a long time ago. The dog was licking the hell out of the snout of the bear. I grabbed it and realized the snout wad all red. I think from cranrasberry juice. Evidently the lab thinks it tastes great. Oh and the lab about broke his neck slipping on a hot wheel car.

That is just in the last hour.

I read this a few days ago. It was sad about her cancer, but so inspiring on their donations, and making sure family was taken care of. In their position I would have done the same... minus porno money of course lol!!
To have so much money can cause many problems. We have had 2 lottery millionaires in our tiny community, both bought at the same grocery store. One is now dead. He was a male chauvinist pig! Died after drunken street fight. The other is still around. He was on welfare with second wife paying no child support to first wife. He had to pay all child support arrears and of course keeping it coming. Too bad he didn't have to pay back welfare. I think since this has happened Mich. laws have been passed to fix that. He was spending his winnings too quickly. He did finally smarten up and have someone manage his money & set a budget for him.

LynnD, I want French toast!! Can I can I ??? What's one more mouth to feed" LOL!!
I have a feeling you will not be having trouble sleeping tonight! Bless you for helping your family. You are my millionaire care giver of the month :)

Happy Birthday DIANNE!!

SHIRLEY: What an inspiring story! "All the money in the world can't buy your health" so very true. I wouldn't want to win that much money..I know things would change too much and I kinda like them the way they are..well except for the house that's falling apart, so I'd fix that. The one car situation..definitely fix that. New a/c..yep that too. I'd help my family and friends and then donate, donate, donate. I have so much stuff now..I don't need any more to push around and dust. I might have a different take on this if I was younger..but at this age I'm pretty settled and like it that way.

TINA: Don't forget to set a little extra aside for the next Cricut machine that comes out too.. :D

LYNN: Sounds like Thumper thought the Beanie Baby would like a drink..lol..

MARY: I don't think I've ever read a story about lottery winners that had a happy ending.

CAROL: I have a feeling there would be a wedding that was all paid for too.. :)

MO: We are supposed to be dropping all the way down into the 70's for the next few days..brrrrrr... ;)

BARB: I hope your shoulder is feeling better today! :)

The neighbors behind us and the ones across the street are getting their new roofs today..POUND, POUND, POUND since 7am..and it takes 3 days to replace a roof! Well, we'll get 'em back next week..HA!!

Hi....thanks for all the birthday wishes on here and FB. I appreciate them and the singing from TINA AND JODI was just....hmm.....overwhelming in separate ways from each and I will just leave it at that...

I would love to win all this money. No health can't be bought but I would so like to help out my family, get our house paid for, MrD would think he would be retiring but that would be up for discussion and I also have a couple of charity places I would donate to as it wouldn't feel right keeping it all. I just should buy a ticket to see how I really handle it when I win!

Shirley Excellent blog topic! I agree with the other Owls that it is truly an inspiring story. There are some things I would do for myself. I would definitely share with my family and help out friends, too. I'm lucky that my house is paid for but there are things around here that need work and upgrading and I'd definitely want to do that. I would also donate a large part of it. At least I think I would. I never buy lottery tickets so I guess I'll never know for sure.

Just_Lin said...

Dianne I hope you've had a great day so far. How much older are you than me? LOL

Just_Lin said...

LynnD I'm envisioning one of those scary camp stories that they tell around the campfire where you hear the thumping coming closer and closer and closer. Aaaahhhh!!! LOL

Just_Lin said...

Zona With the money, you could hire someone to dust your stuff for you. : )

Just_Lin said...

Carol LOL @ buying tripe......and PORN!

Just_Lin said...

Bonach LOL! Look in the "used" section.

Just_Lin said...

Mary You are so right! Having money is also a responsibility not just party time like some seem to think. There is a learning curve involved for those who've never had it. With that kind of winnings, the first thing to do is sit down with a financial advisor.

Just_Lin said...

Tina Why buy the tickets if you aren't going to check the numbers. Before you know it, you'll lose the tickets and there goes the Cricuit Imagine!

Happy Monday!

I loved this story... how selfless and generous.

I would pay off the house, and take care of my family.

There are several charities I donate to, and I would give the majority of the money to them.

Thank you for posting this, Shirley!

We had a cold, stormy day yesterday, today was sunny and warm.

Di, hope you had a nice birthday!

Bebbi Yes, I picked up on that right away in Chicago. You are definitely a giver and a beautiful person. : )

Just_Lin; I see your avatar, and I have fantasies of loading a small plane with its brothers and sisters, then dumping them out at altitude. Maybe turkeys CAN fly.

Just_Lin said...

Bonach I see it and have fantasies of gravy. That's probably why you're thin and I'm not. LOL

My delete by the way, due to a typo. I was asking someone to pass the gravy.

EBJ I just saw that you slipped in. Yes, today was so different from yesterday. We got a good dousing yesterday but today was blue skies.

Good evening Owls...Moaning Tina, Bebbi, Lynn D, Carol, Bonachi, Mary, Zona, Dianne, Just Lin and EBJ!

I could not be as selfless as this couple. I would have to keep some of this money for myself, but I would give money to places that helped abuse victims, the Childrens hospital, facilities that delt with burn victims and some other. I would probably organize an Owl get together and I might even attend!

Thank you all for your wonderful comments today! I've been involved in some family drama today that promises to only get worse. It's zapped all my energy, so I'm going to go to bed. I have to be in the office tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be out of the line of fire. Nighty night Owls!!! ((HUGS))

Just_Lin said...

Shirley LOL You better attend! Did you see in Area 51 where I wrote to you that I went to Peggy's Cove during my trip?

Good evening feathered friends!

SHIRLEY...great blog. Inspirational and thought inspiring.

If I won (crossing fingers and saying a prayer)I would pay off everything I owe, pay off my dump and then fix up my dump, get hi-speed wireless, buy at least one article of clothing that costs more then $10, purchase all 72 of Cary Grant's movies, fly to Bristol, EN and stare at the statue of Cary Grant, put some away so as to never be in this position again. Then I would help my family. I would help my friends and then donate to my favorite charities.

I would probably quit my job and take on a part-time job so I could volunteer and travel.

And I would buy TINA a Cricut since I won and she didn't!

whabbear said...

I wouldn't give away a dime! I'd keep it all, live off just the interest, and then will it all to good causes and charities when I die!

Just_Lin said...

Maureen One of my all time favorite movies is Arsenic and Old Lace. It's an early Grant movie and still makes me laugh. He was quite the looker, wasn't he?

Just_Lin said...

Bear Good plan but your family and loved ones may not be too thrilled with it.

Maureen said...

JUST LIN...ohhh, he makes me swoon! I am obsessed with Cary Grant right now! I have a hold on Arsenic and Old Lace at the library. I love An Affair to Remember. And The Awful Truth. And The Philadelphia Story. The list goes on and on...

I discovered a YouTube of him singing a lullaby to his daughter...made me cry. So lovely.
