Too Hot For Television

by Bonachichi

This advert was recently banned from a few television networks, being deemed as “too controversial”. It is an homage to a 1986 advert entitled, “The Deficit Trials”, also banned by major networks. In 1986, the U.S. national debt was around 2 trillion dollars. Today, it is rapidly approaching 14 trillion dollars. A seven hundred percent increase.

Three questions for today: Do you find this advert offensive or controversial? (why or why not?) Do you think it’s right to censor this advert in light of what we’ve just seen with political adverts? What do you think of the “Tax and Spend” solution to the economic crisis? There is no right or wrong answer to any of these questions. Just opinions. Everyone’s got one, and everyone can voice it.

Good morning Tuna....

I don't find it controversial or offensive. Every country in the world with spare change buys a piece of us.... China has the biggest chunk...by far....all these countries buy our debt because we are a pretty safe bet.

China has about a trillion of it and the rest of the world makes up the other 2.5 trillion. (thats is owned by foreign governments)

Most of the national debt is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in somebody elses name.....lol

No...that would be the World Bank...

The Taxing and Spending Clause of the US Constitution gives Congress the power to impose taxes...to finance government debt and the power to spend for the General Welfare... within strictly defined limits....and we know what party controls the house now....

When we attack Iran that should fix everything....lol

We are going to have higher taxes...that inevitable...and I have never understood tax breaks for the rich....I think that those with substantial wealth should pay more to alleviate the burden on the middle class.....I don't have a problem with paying more....I mean..when you look around....especially at struggling families trying to get their kids through college or just food on the table....it just seems right to me....presently...

But a flat 10% tax for everyone even makes more sense...

Hong Kong is fun to visit...I wonder if I will like living there...??

Hi Tina, Carol & DeeDee. I didn't understand why this vid was banned either. I don't know what's controversial about it. That's why I was hoping to get some feedback here.

Morning glories!

Tina is moaning again!

Well because there is a modicum of truth in that there commercial Bon. That is why it was banned.

China owns us. Lest we forget tho that the money that was loaned out was used to pay for the first tax cuts to the wealthy that President Bush put into place 10 years ago. Then the economy started it's downward slide before the last Presidential election and again President Bush decided that we needed to send everyone in America a stimulus check. Remember those? 300 dollars, 600 dollars, 1200 dollars. They were supposed to jump start the economy, people were supposed to go out and buy TV's and other crap to keep things flowing. Of course people had already started to lose jobs and the housing market was crashing around our ears, but hey this might work. The money was used to pay bills and did not effect the economy one iota.

Oh and yeah the money for these stimulus checks was borrowed from???? China.

Oh and lets not forget the jobs lost all went to where? China, India, Bahrain etc.....

But hey it is easier to blame trying to get healthcare reform and trying to create jobs with stimulus money, which by the way did add jobs in every state, even tho the Repulicans deny this at every turn. Except that if you checked out their websites. They bragged about the jobs created and saved in their districts because of that stimulus money.

Our political system has truly become owned by big corporate entities, and full of hypocrites and liars.

The question is how will this commercial play and how much money will we owe China after this next two years?

I see Tina is back to moaning in 1st again! BTW the reason I couldn't watch the video yesterday is because I live in Canada. Every sight I went to it wouldn't allow me. I think that is just rude!!

Good afternoon Carol, DeeDee, Bonachi and Lynn D!

Sorry, but I don't know enough about US politics to make an informed decision on this topic so I will leave it to Lynn D. She is always well informed and always makes excellent comments.

DeeDee what exactly are you going to do to the Chinese with your corn?

Lynn D said...

Lynn D pop's her head up out of the hole and realizes that what her Dad used to say is indeed true.

"Dig a hole deep enough you end up in China"

LOL, LynnD. I think I've turned my back on US politics. I know something's wrong. I don't know how to fix it. The politicos seem to want to bury their heads and not see it. Or admit to it. That was my first thought.

It opens a big can of worms. I once asked a Department of Defense official what country poses the biggest threat to the US. His answer? "China". Not because of weapons, but because of economics. Number 2? India.

Oh, and LynnD; thank you for a beautifully thought out comment. You never cease to amaze me with your insight.

Shirley, you became a victim of USA entertainment regions yesterday. Film and television is released by "region", or geographical location. On the internet, this is usually determined by your IP address.

I run into this all the time and get around it several ways, most of them "kind of" legal.

Are you all aware that your DVD players also have region codes? You can't play a DVD from say, France on a Canadian or American player. It's for the money, nothing more. Apparently, NBC has not sold that episode of SNL yet and they don't want anyone outside the USA to sneak peeks without paying for it.

DeeDee is there a curling rink? What about a Tim Hortons? Do you have bananas? I love bananas. Do I get my own jet? How about a car? And I'll need an unlimited expense account. Movie theater? That should do to start. When do I move in?

DeeDee's also got a teapot you can swim in. The outside is good for rock climbing.
