My Jon Bon has competition for my affections!

by Maureen

I have become obsessed, and totally in love with Archibald Alec Leach...CARY GRANT! Ok, so he'd be over a hundred years old, but hey it's my fantasy :)~

One day, I found a 5 movie boxed set of Cary Grant movies...Ohhh la la! My lucky day! The first movie was Holiday. LOVED IT! And so began my infatuation with the oh so handsome, funny and charming Cary Grant. I love a light-hearted romantic comedy from any era, but these movies ("screwball comedies" as they were then dubbed) have captured my heart. And so did Mr. Grant (NOT Ed Asner! tee hee hee!) I watched Holiday 3 times. Then I watched The Awful Truth...repeatedly! His Girl Friday was interesting to me. His character was every bit as suave, but not so debonair. He was rather mean, but the eyes and the voice with his own special accent and the CLEFT CHIN...oh my gawd...that chin! Needless to say I swooned! I was not as thrilled with Only Angels Have Wings, but still a good vehicle for my man! This movie was attributed to the supposed line...JUDY, JUDY, JUDY, but he really only said JUDY one time! I replayed the scene a number of times just to be sure (and see my guy some more!)

I think that my favorite, so far is An Affair To Remember. Nobody dons a tux like Cary (see, I am now on a first name basis with him!) And even though you think he is a wolf in sheep's clothing, he is charming and quick witted and loves his grandma! I cried as he stood, in the rain, at the Empire State Building while being stood up by his one true love. I have a thing for men's hands and he has strong hands that I want to hold me! And when he wiped the tears from Deborah Kerr's cheek...I was smitten. Me thinks I need to watch it AGAIN before it goes back!

So now I am reading a Bio of him. If what is written is true, he was not the nicest man. He was a diva. He drank a LOT. He was cheap. He worked for J. Edgar Hoover as a spy, watching and reporting on his then wife, Barbara Hutton (heiress to the Woolworth fortune) and like so many of the heart throbs of that era was bi-sexual. He was in a long-term relationship with Randolf Scott...it seems even while he was married (as was Scott)...longer then any of his marriages.  He had 5 marriages and 1 daughter by Dyan Cannon. And spent years tripping on LSD.

But I don't care, because remember this is MY fantasy! If he were alive today and 50 years younger we WOULD be together! He would flash that smile at me, caress me with those strong hands and swallow me up in that cleft chin of his. We would cuddle together on the love seat and watch each of the 72 movies he made while sipping champagne. He would make me laugh and then he would take my face in his hands, cock his head ever so slightly and say...maureen, maureen, maureen.

MO - Great blog!! I love a good romantic comedy, so I'm sure that I would love his, too!! I'm going to try to find An Affair To Remember. I've been meaning to watch it, especially since it is referenced so much in Sleepless in Seattle.

BTW....your other boyfriend is performing on the Today Show this morning!!

p.s. I won't tell Cary ♥

Good Morning!!

Jodi thank you for the "hot" and "sweet" mail!! A very nice surprise!!

Oh Maureen...Cary Grant was beautiful....and I don't think he was gay or anything....he didn't mind the photos of he and Randolph being published and didn't care what the rags said.....had the rumors been the case back then it would have been the "bacio de morte" back in those days...

His longest marriage was to Betsy Drake...and I found a quote from her....

"Why would I believe that Cary was homosexual when we were busy fucking? Maybe he was bisexual. He lived 43 years before he met me. I don't know what he did."

and what cinches it for me is that Randolph Scott had a gorgeous face...but...underdeveloped calves....you know..

patas de un pollo...

Love the blog, Mo! And I think you and Cary look better together :)

Good morning SHIRLEY & EBJ!!

I best get my butt moving. I have dishes, laundry, and Dad's shopping to do. I'm saving my book for this afternoon. Great day to snuggle with a good book!! I'm really close to finishing The Girl Who Played With Fire.

Can't say I was ever interested in Cary Grant. I wouldn't know him if he beat me over the head with a stick.

It's the ignorance of the "next generation". If it didn't happen on our watch, we rarely take an interest. Sad, that. So many great people, forgotten in the ignorance of youth.

Morning Glories!

Jodi you look marvolousss!

Mo funny if you have ever seen Carrie Fisher interviewed, she had nothing but respect for Cary Grant. He helped at a trying time in her life according to her. I don't know who wrote the bio but it sounds like maybe some of it should be taken with a sack of salt.

I love his acting and always will@

Ok have to get going I have a 2 year old to wrestle in the tub in a bit. Ritchie has a play date with Angel's granddaughter this afternoon. If you here a little voice yelling Help Me! Just ignore it. He is a faker.

Lynn D said...

Sorry for the typos I am racing through the post before the faker finds me.

Jodi! You are exceptionally boootiful today!

Oh Mo, Oh mo, Oh Mo!!! Nah,
Oh Mary,Oh Mary, Oh Mary, now That sounds soooo much better :)
Loved Cary,Clark Gable, and Gene Kelly.
I KNOW Gene didn't have "patas de un pollo... LOL!!

Gottah run, have some errands to run.....

Just_Lin said...

Jodi You are especially beautiful today, even more than usual. xoxo

MO Thanks for the great blog today. Like I told you, one of my all time favorite movies is "Arsenic and Old Lace". No matter that I've seen it dozens of times over the years, it still makes me laugh. I agree that Cary was extremely handsome. It was to him (I believe his first movie) that Mae West said, "Why don't you come up and see me sometime".

Jodi said...

LYNN - lol @ before the faker finds me!! I hope Ritchie has fun on his play date ♥

MARY - Why thank you ma'am!! Where you running to?

Just_Lin said...

Goldie I was thinking of Bringing Up Baby and then I saw you mention it. That was another great comedy. He and Katherine were great together.

Jodi said...

SLIN - We must have been typing at the same time. Thank you!! Any big plans for the weekend?

Just_Lin said...

Hi, HOdi! I see you slipped in between my posts.

Just_Lin said...

No big plans. I'll be meeting a few friends for breakfast on Sunday. Otherwise, it's the same ol', same ol'.

Just_Lin said...

DeeDee As you know, these stars used to be under contract to the studios and their exposure to the media was tightly controlled. There was no paparazzi stalking them at every turn like there is today. I think there were a great deal of things kept under wraps, public dates arranged, etc. Cary may have felt pretty protected as long as he was bringing in the bucks at the box office. I'm of the opinion that he may have been playing both sides. Variety is the spice of life, they say.

Jodi said...

SLIN - I love going out for breakfast!! I have to work, so have something delicious for me ;)

Just_Lin said...

LynnD LOL at hiding from the little faker. Keeping you on the run, eh?

Just_Lin said...

HOdi Will do. Does that mean you'll be consuming some of the calories for me?

Just_Lin said...

Bonach Even the black and white movie, Arsenic and Old Lace, was considered to be an old movie when I first saw it. No matter. Some of these great old films are timeless.

Zona said...

Good Afternoon!

MO: I understand your obsession completely! I did the same thing with Tony Perkins..yep..that's who I said..Tony Perkins! Of course after 3 movies I was over it..lol..

I love old movies. My parents always let me stay up late on the weekends to watch them. I think I was about 10 when I first discovered Frank Sinatra..I've been crazy about him ever since.

I've seen a lot of Cary Grant movies..my favorites are Father Goose and To Catch A Thief. He was so suave..yet funny. He had such a way with facial expressions..and that voice! A class act all the way!

JODI: I echo your sentiment..I love a good romantic comedy too..which of course is why I like Hugh Grant so much! ;)

btw..you are looking extra gorgeous today! :)

BEBBI: Jerry Lewis is one of my favorites too! Have you seen the movie 'Boeing Boeing'? It stars Jerry Lewis AND Tony Curtis! :D

LYNN: Ritchie and Angel's granddaughter have a play date? You better get pics..they are both so adorable!

MARY: Gene Kelly..another one of my favorites..I always stop and watch if I see his movies while channel surfing..never get tired of them!

Waving HI to GOLDIE, EBJ, DEEDEE and SHIRLEY!

Just_Lin said...

Mary I never found Gene to be particularly attractive. Clark's ears were too big but he did know how to "smolder". :)

Zona said...

Hi J/LIN & JODI!

Just_Lin said...

Zona Hi! I'm hiding here behind the big turkey. :)

Just_Lin said...

Bebbi Well, Tony Curtis was a looker back in the day. Jerry and Robin, not so much. But, funny!

Just_Lin said...

Shirley How's the weather up there? Have things calmed down?

Just_Lin said...

EBJ It's another beautiful day here on the coast. Hope you have a good one.

DeeDee said...

J/L...yeah..Cary was a huge homo...I was just saying that to enrich Maureens fantasy....

lol at Clark Gable smoldering....that was a very advanced case of syphilis you know...

and Mary...

Gene Kelly showed his legs once on film...that I know of....in "The Pirate" with Judy Garland...it was a marvelous showcase for his glorious calves and thighs!! That was one hunk of a man!!

uh-o!! Zorch alert!!

Jodi said...

ZONA - Bite your tongue!! Colin Firth and Ewan McGregor are my fav's!!

DeeDee said...

here ya go....one pair of Gene Kelley legs...hot hot hot.....

Just Lin our weather is now sunny, although it will soon be dark here. Water levels are going down, but a lot of damage was done by the heavy rains we had. In the neighboring county several roads are still closed and some bridges are destroyed. Many people still can't get to their homes to access the damage. A friend I went to school with had 4 feet of water in here basement. Her freezer, which was full was floating.

Jodi said...

SHIRLEY - Our gorgeous weather has now come to an end. They're even talking of snow flurries overnight on Saturday. So sorry for your friend. Especially the freezer. I hope she can salvage the food.

Finally a chance to sit!
Jodi, I was on a post office run and getting a few gross-eries. I had to get my $3 worth of lottery tickets, and stock up on Greeting cards.

We have had unseasonably warm weather. Today it was over 60* & sunny. I thought I better stock up on bird feed, & dog food. I know cold & wet weather is not to far away!

DeeDee, what do you do when your Zorch flares up? Should I as Tina?

Mary/MI said...

no no, not "as" Tina, ASK Tina!!

Dianne/Denver said...

MO; i love reading your fantasy....I almost thought I was in the room with you and Cary and covered my eyes!! It was a very fun blog to read....thanks for the smiles.

Well, we never had that snow they predicted in town. The mountains had plenty but they are saying maybe over the weekend. Today was beautiful and hope it stays that way as the Bronco party this Sunday is at our house. Lots of work to do although I did get my daughter to make my main dish and everyone brings things but it still seems busy. I like to go to them rather than have one but ........

J/L: You forgot to mention that on Sunday you will be watching the 49ers lose yet another game unless you are on a Bye. I talk like my team is heading for the Super Bowl. Last weekend in Denver our CU coach was fired after an awful college game, Cowboys coach was fired and everyone was waiting for the Bronco coach to be the third...but not yet!

I am off to the grocery store as I didn't bother to go today and I sure don't want to go on Saturday to get my things for Sunday. Hope you all have a good night.

BTW, did anyone watch the CMA awards show the other night? I loved it.

Lynn D said...

Well I am home and pooped! The kids had a great time and got along famously.

See the picture? I think Ritchie may have a future as a doctor as he was quite fascinated by her belly. :)

Hope everyone is having a great evening.

Dianne/Denver said...

LYNN: What a cute picture of the grandkids playing. Better keep watch on that doctor thing! :) I love the red hair on Angel's grandchild. My daughter grew up with that kind of red hair...she hated it and I loved it! I had always hoped for a red haired grandchild but ended up with blond and brown. Glad you had fun today. Are you too pooped to pop?

Good evening feathered friends!

Thank you all for the comments (I kinda feared a comment count of 2!)

I have now seen 14 of Cary's movies and read a 2nd bio. The 2nd was much more friendly!

If you can find the double disc set of Bringing Up Baby there is a disc with a 2 hour bio. In it is the clip of Betsy Drake that DEE DEE quoted!

JUST LIN...according to this 2nd Bio, Cary said his least favorite movie was Arsenic and Old Lace! HUH? LOL! He said he felt he over-acted in it. I disagree and LOVED IT!

The latest one I watched was Notorious with Ingrid Bergman. The kissing scene from the balcony to the apartment...made my zorch flame! It was soooooo romantic.

GOLDIE...when I rolled over this morning I asked JBJ if he was upset at my obsession with Cary and he was wonderful. He said why should he be? I let him be with YOU and SACBARB and MARY...all of which are still very much alive! And Cary is very much dead!!

Maureen said...

I think we are missing out on the old classics that left something to the imagination. As for the movies I have seen, you never see anyone actually in bed. That way you could imagine the romance and the heat without it being in your face. There was an innocence but enough intendre that you knew what was happening. Amd you totally wished you were the leading lady.

Maureen said...

DEE DEE...I thought Randolf Scott was too skinny. Cary had a much better body! There is a scene from My Favorite Wife that I saw on YouTube where Cary Grant tries to cut in on a dance with Randolf Scott and Betsy Drake. It is hilarious as they both eye each other up and down!

Lynn D said...

Dianne her hair is gorgeous! Very coppery. Ritchie was amazed at meeting someone with the same size belly as him. :)

Maureen said...

LYNN...what a precious picture! Ritchie is getting so big! How is your daughter doing?

I had an extraordinarily bad day at work today. If I didn't love 99.9% of my job and enjoy having a roof over my head and some food on my plate I would have told them all to fuck themselves and walked out.

I am still trying to calm down and coming here to all the comments and thinking about Cary has made it better.

I think I will have to watch Notorious again...

Mary/MI said...

Mo, sorry about your bad day at work!
I will be good and leave you with Cary & BJ for the night :)
Sweet dreams everyone
