What’s That Smell???

by Scirish

I have always had an overdeveloped sense of smell. Sometimes that can be a good thing, other times, not so much. It is amazing how certain smells can trigger a memory. For instance, the smell of hot tar reminds me of riding my bike in the summer as a child. The smell of burning leaves triggers memories of Halloween.

Some interesting facts courtesy of “The Smell Report” (seriously, that’s what it was called): “Our smelling function is carried out by two small odor-detecting patches – made up of about five or six million yellowish cells – high up in the nasal passages.

For comparison, a rabbit has 100 million of these olfactory receptors, and a dog 220 million. Humans are nonetheless capable of detecting certain substances in dilutions of less than one part in several billion parts of air. We may not be able to match the olfactory feats of bloodhounds, but we can, for example, ‘track’ a trail of invisible human footprints across clean blotting paper.

The human nose is in fact the main organ of taste as well as smell. The so-called taste-buds on our tongues can only distinguish four qualities – sweet, sour, bitter and salt -all other ‘tastes’ are detected by the olfactory receptors high up in our nasal passages.”

I had heard before that smell was a big part of taste, so I conducted a not so scientific experiment. I put on a pair of those flesh colored nose pincher plugs that one of the kids had used for the pool (did I mention that they pinch?) and cooked dinner. I made one of my favorites: Pot Roast. Usually, when I cook Pot Roast, I am absolutely starved by the time it is done. I have been anticipating all day. Well, I kept the nose plugs on throughout the cooking and also when I ate, the Pot Roast still melted in my mouth, but I couldn’t TASTE it! I took them off and voila, yummy! I think that I shall use the pinchers as a diet aid!

I think that for my next trick, I will try tracking human footprints. If you see “Woman poses as a Bloodhound” in the headlines, that will be me.

So, Owls, how is your sense of smell? Do you have any fond “smell” memories? What about smells that you strongly dislike? (Hate is such a bad word, but Liver would be an example for me.) Feel free to talk amongst yourselves; I have some tracking to do.

Scirish - Excellent blog!!!! I have a great sense of smell and (like you) that is NOT always a good thing....

I really dislike the smell of a skunk that has become roadkill!!

I LOVE the smell of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies!!

Mr. MEK lost his sense of smell after an accident, SO that is NOT a good thing for me!!!

Again, great blog - can't wait to see everyone's reaction...

Okay - I'm off to another day of tortune!!!!!!

Good Morning Everyone!

Scirish, very interesting blog and testing with the pot roast. I think you may have great diet idea using those nose plug's. I think I may give it a try too. I also think when I go to my mothers house I may use those eye cover's that are used for sleeping! She alway's has something around that I shouldn't be eating.

Tink, I hope you have been able to get some rest. ♥

Bon'O, more ((((hugs)))) to you and your family. ♥

Shirley, sorry to hear you're having bad weather, but glad you are ok. You are missed ♥

Must dry my hair now...I'll try to stop in later. Have a feeling I may need a nap today, not enough sleep last night.

I hope you all have a good day♥

Hi Mek, Congrat's on First!!!

Good Morning Hooters!

MEK- Congrats on 1st! Hi birdee.

scirish, cool blog! I have a very good sense of smell- which apparently leads to a good sense of taste, which leads to eating to much good stuff, which leads to--- well you get my drift!

The things I love to smell? Lilacs blooming and a freshly bathed baby.

I can not stand the smell of olives (yes they have a smell) or puke! I don't do puke. Even when the kids were little, if they puked it was Mr. Goldie who took care of it. Never mom. I can do blood and guts, not puke.

Morning Glories!

I see MEK is at it again! First!

Scrishy very fun blog!

I do have a good sense of smell and often smell things before the rest of the family.

Some of my favorites are fresh mown grass. I find it comforting. A bonfire in the distance makes me feel cozy.

Like Goldie I love the smell of fresh lilacs. Oh and Goldie a freshly bathed baby is the best! You just want to sniff their little heads until the hair stands up. LOL

When I was pregnant with my children my sense of smell went crazy!!! I could not get enough of the smell of the running water and laundry soap and fabric softener when doing the laundry. I would hang my head over the open tub and inhale.

But hey I had weird craving too at that time. We should do a study about heightend hormones and the sense of smell!

Bon I am so sorry for your families loss. (((Hugs)))

Shirley glad to see you survived the storm.

Good morning MEK, Goldie, Birdee, and my lovely Tinka!

Good Morning Everyone,

I have been up early since 5:00 am, I had to drive my husband to work, hopefully is truck will be ready today.

Scrish, interesting blog, since I have always been called the nose in my family. I have a good sense of smell also, which is a good and bad thing, but I did smell a gas leak in my basement when my oldest one was 5 weeks old. My mother told me that when she went to France in 1985 and went to some perfume factory there, there are only a certain number of people that can actually smell the difference of perfumes, and they hire them to test a good perfume to a bad perfume. Maybe we should go to France and get us a job, everyone with a good sense of smell.

I really hate to mention something bad again I swear it always seems like I'm having problems, I found my oldest son, Anthony, cutting himself this weekend, (last night) he had a knife from the kitchen and he had about 10 marks on his arms. I was pissed, hurt, didn't understand, I love this kid with all my heart and soul, he was so wanted, I went for every test under the sun and seen many doctors just to have him. I am so confused. I have an emergency therapy meeting today hopefully, I'm waiting for his new therapist to call me back. I had to calm down talk to my husband, (he was actually pretty calm about it) we talked with him, he said he feels better when he does it, because people hate him, and thinks he needs to hurt himself for being so bad that people hate him. My heart is breaking for him. Hes not perfect, but hes ADHD, now the secretary/receptionist said I think he needs an antidepressent, How can I put him on an antidepressent, with his concerta, all this drugs at 13 years old. I'm 42 years old I don't know of anyone when I was in 8th grade that was on antidepressents. I talked to my sister this morning and she said things are different, so different than when we were growing up, parents expect so much from their kids today. I only expect their best, they don't have to be super smart, or great at anything, just be a kid and enjoy being young. I did call the principal, he is going to send a private/personal email to his teachers to make sure hes ok during school. I feel like a failure as a mother, where did I go wrong with him. Will he ever be ok and function in society?? Like I said I'm in tears this is the third week I'm so stressed and upset. My therapist retired, But I guess I need to go see one again too. I'm so sorry to burden you guys with this, but I have really no one but my sister to express this too, You, my friends are my therapy. Thank You.

Reene Eve- never feel bad about expressing your feelings to this group. We are here for each other thru thick and thin. If you need a hug, a prayer, a high five or a kick in the pants- someone is here to do it!!

Congrats on first mek!

Renee: So sorry to hear about your son. I hope you find some answers to help him. You'll both be in my thoughts and prayers.

As for smell, so many things trigger my allergies. When I read that Lynn likes fresh mown grass and bonfires, I could feel my nose start to itch and my eyes start to water. And puke....Well, I deal with it at school all the time. Sometimes it gets to me but I usually use "mind over matter" and get through it. It's just part of the job.

Good smells: I agree with MEK about fresh baked chocolate chip cookies!! Or apple pie, right out of the oven. Yum!

I can go into antique stores and get a whiff of something that reminds me of my grandma. It's weird. When I smell Play-doh or super elastic bubble plastic, I think of my childhood. I'm sure there are more things but I can't think of them right now.

I went to the foot doc this morning after my morning shift at work. He gave me a painful injection in my heel. I've been so busy around the house and my foot is still hurting. I think I'm going to go get a power nap before I have to go back to work. Maybe being off my feet for a while will help. Sometimes it only makes it worse when I get up to walk again.

Wishing all my Owl friends a good day.

scirish, thank you for this blog! Smell is the sense with the longest memory. I read this a while ago. A smell from the past can bring back feelings more than any other of the 5 senses.

renee eve, you can not tell your son enough times how precious he is and how much you love him. He definitely needs professional help, and I see you are getting it for him. You are not a failure and neither is your son. He can do fine in the real world. He just needs help. I will be praying for your son, you and your whole family. I am sorry you are going through such hard times.

Scirish, Interesting blog and I think you have found a miracle diet aid. I am going to try it. I guess I have a good sense of smell, I have never really thought about it. One of my favorite smells is bread baking. It reminds me of when my mother used to bake bread and we would eat it warm with butter melting on it. Yummo

Goldie, I'm not good with puke either. Often my hubby would have to take over for me when the kids were puking. And yesterday in Church, the teenage girl next to me puked all over the pew in front of her. Her mother was trying to contain it in her hand (unsuccessfully) and sent another kid to the bathroom to 'get something!' I felt badly that I couldn't offer any help, but I almost puked myself and I had to turn my head. It happened right before Communion so I went up for Communion and walked right out to my car. I'm sure God will forgive me for leaving early.

MEK, you are up too early again.

Tinka, (((HUGS)))

Renee ((((HUGS))) to you too.

Zona, are you sleeping?

Hello to Birdee and LynnD and all who land later.

I do love the smell of cotton candy, baked warm brownies from the oven and the smell after it rains.

I couldn't say it any better than Grandma Moses did. I saw this cutting of ones self on the show Intervention. I dated a guy whose 13 year old daughter did this.
I am going back to rest. I am still getting over my sore throat and cough.
Flu shots are out now so don't forget to get one right away. Flu season last year was a bad one!

Happy Monday Everyone!!!

Scirish~ Fantastic Blog today! I too have an over-heightened sense of smell. Anything bad, I smell it first, be it something "forgotten" in the refrigerator to the first "ozone" rain smell of the season. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not so good, like if you go to a friend's house, and something "just doesn't smell right", and you can't wait to leave!!

But, as for smells that I love, or brings back memories, anything made by Johnson Baby Products!
Especially the Baby Shampoo, and the Baby Powder, and Jergens Hand Lotion! Everytime I smell those, I am reminded of my Mother. I don't remember much about her, only a few significant memories, as she died when I was six, and actually went to live in a TB Sanitarium in Denver when I was just 5 months old. But those smells of Johnson's and Jergens leave me with a sense of melancholy of my dear Mother.

MEK~ Hi! congrats on First!

And a Good Morning to :
Birdee
Goldie
Tinka~ (((Hugs)))
Lynn D
Renee Eve
Donna Jo
Grandma Moses
SacBarb
And everyone else who flys in later!!!

RENEE EVE~ RUN, don't walk to your nearest Therapist, and get Anthony the help he is so desperately seeking. Yes, 8th graders get depressed, some need medication, others don't, but only a Qualified Therapist/Psychiatrist can make that evaluation!!! I know you said you were waiting for a phone call back. Don't wait. There are Immediate Crisis Intervention Programs available everywhere. You are not worrying needlessly, you are his Mother, and of course you are worried, and so should everyone else be, that is associated with your son.

He can be helped. He WILL be helped.

This isn't the end, all is not lost, it is a beginning of healing.

And, as a Mother of a child who had issues, (I wrote about them to you several days ago, when you first wrote about Anthony)I know that the faster and earlier you get your child into Therapy/Psychiatry, the better off they and your family will be.

Remember, this isn't just Anthony's sickness, it affects everyone in the family also. Your whole family should become involved in Family Therapy as well.

I hope I didn't come across as "preachy", or like I know it all, I just have been through similar, (not exact) circumstances, and am speaking from my own personal experience.

My love, and support are here for you and your family.

May each of you find some peace and love in your day today,
Donna Jean

Mek Congrats on #1, you early bird (at least compared to the rest of us, you are).

Goldie Ooops!! You are the one that had the dog puke in your lap. My apologies! I have written to Carol and hope the mistake will be corrected soon. I'm really sorry.

Tinka and BonO Hugs and love to you both.

Renee Eve I agree with the others, professional help is definitely needed. Love alone will not do it. I'm so sorry you are going through such a stressful time right now.

DonnaJean I love the smell of Jergens Hand Lotion, too.

scirish This was a really great blog! Thank you for writing it. There is a certain smell, I think it must be chicken feed or chickens, that I will pick up once in a blue moon. It's really rare but as soon as I smell it, I recall my grandfather's chicken coop. This was in Florida and we moved from there when I was four. That smell is stuck in my memory banks forever, though. It is also how I got broken of the habit of sucking on a pacifier. I was standing to close to the coop, it dropped out of my mouth and landed right next to the chicken wire. One of the chickens grabbed it and a bunch of them ripped it apart. I wonder if I felt traumatized by that? I guess not, because I enjoy it when I come across that smell again.

Morning almost Afternoon Everyone!

SCIRISH: I remember as a teenager..my dad and I flipping a coin to see who got to use the big bathroom first. I had to get ready for school..he had to get ready for work. My dad usually won...and I would be dreading the entry into the bathroom when he was finished. NOT for the reason you think, though THAT could be unbelievable too...you remember the the joke about putting a canary in the room first?? Uh-huh. But when he was just getting ready for work...he would use so many different 'products'..it was stifling! First deodorant..then hairspary..then aftershave..then cologne..I swear he walked out leaving a cloud in his wake. I had to wait for the fog to clear so I didn't get asthma!!

But ya know...I can still remember how the combination of all those products made my dad smell so good. It's funny how if I really try, I have no problem recalling that scent...and with it the memory of his smile and sparkling eyes.

Great blog today SCIRISH!

MEK: My mom use to open up all the windows once it got cool out, and bake batch after batch of chocolate chip cookies. I could smell them as I walked home from school...and usually had about five friends in tow coming into the house to eat them...always with a BIG glass of cold milk!

**Congrats on FIRST!**

BIRDEE: You mentioned doing your hair..the stuff they used in the 70's for permanents is one of the smells I couldn't be around very much...it just choked me as a kid.

GOLDIE: LOL...when the dogs made a mess on the floor, my mom would start to gag, she had to call my dad. He would shove kleenex up his nose and clean everything up while us kids would stand behind him laughing at how he looked!!

And you're right..it is your quote..I had a sister that got carsick! ;)

SACBARB: I love the smell of fresh bread too...I get funny looks in the grocery store when I just hang around the bakery sniffing the air as the bread comes out of the oven! ;)

DONNAJEAN: Baby Lotion always smells so good...I wonder if they have a candle with that scent??

Zona said...

J/LIN: You didn't say if you thought that chicken coop smell was a pleasant one or not. There was an egg farm on the way to Mr. Z's folks house...and wooooo-eeee..you could smell that from a half mile away! ;)

HI LYNND!!!! HI GMOSES!!

Has anyone gone into a candle shop and just been totally overwhelmed?? I constantly have to go to the register and take a whiff of the coffee beans they leave there to nuetralize the smells of all the different candles. It sometimes amazes me that there are some that think certain candles smell really good..especially when I smell them and I almost get whiplash pulling away!! lol...

HI RENEE!

Have a great day everyone!

Just_Lin said...

Zona I'm not sure exactly what made up the smell of my grandfather's chicken coop, but it was pleasant. I'm thinking it was some kind of combination of chicken feed and hay, perhaps.

I also have asthma so I avoid the candle shops and perfume departments. And some of those smells are downright unpleasant. AMAZING that anyone thinks they smell good.

Some of my favorite smells are food related, natch. The smell of cinnamon rolls baking or a turkey roasting..........heaven!

Just_Lin said...

I think part of the reason we are attracted to the lovers we are attracted to is due to how we react to their scent. There is a certain sexy black nightgown I have worn with Custard and his scent gets on it. I don't wash it until I'm ready to see him again just so I can smell his scent on it. I swear, it's like I can't get enough of it. I hope that doesn't make me weird. Plenty of other things make me weird. :)

Sandie said...

Hey Scirish! Thanks for the fun blog! (I have visions of looking out the window and seeing you crawl by on all fours sniffing the ground--good luck with that tracking! LOL)

I have always thought it so amazing how smells can instantly bring up memories. The same with music. I love the smell of coffee, fresh cut grass, flowers, new cars .... and okay, I'll admit it--magic markers!! I know, I'm not supposed to sniff those things. LOL

When I was 14 I woke very early one morning to the smell of carnations in my bedroom. I thought it strange but went back to sleep. Later that morning my sister came crying in my room to tell me that our cousin had died the night before in a car accident. I'll always remember that--I think he came to visit me that morning.

Boy, it's been a tough time in the nest lately.

Bon'O, I'm so sorry for the loss of your SIL. I've been thinking about you.

Tinka, I'm still thinking of you and hoping you're getting stronger each day.

Shirley, I wish I could come over there and spend some time with you. I'm sorry you're feeling down.

Renee, it's going to be okay. Anthony will get through this. I know you're on top of it. I'm thinking about you!! My friend always says, "Parenting is not for wimps!" She's sure right about that, huh? It's so hard. But, I know your family will be okay.

Donna, I hope your heel is better--ouch!

Good Afternoon:

I just got home from picking up the boys, and guess what..... Anthony has the CHICKEN POX he has a fever, stomach ache, tired, and redish white blisters full of puss. I was 13 when I had the chicken pox, I called the doctor he has an appointment at 9:15 am, the nurse told me he will just have a milder case since he did have the shot when he was 3 years old, I guess you have to have 3 chicken pox shots by 12, I didn't know that. Hes got about 20 blisters now. I called the Emergency Phyciatric (sp?) Hospital they will not see him with the Chicken Pox. But he has to be out of school for a week, and he can see his new therapist maybe on Friday, but for sure on Monday.

DonnaJean, Thank you for your advice, I come here for advice, like Goldie said.

Ok I have to go teach catachisium tonite with Victor and Vincent.

J/LIN: Love the smell of hay..though it does spark some allergies..it's worth it.

I think I'll go and smell Mr. Z to test your theory and see what happens..I'll let you know.. ;)

SANDIE: A couple years after my dad died, my sis came home really late one night from work. She was fumbling with her key at the door, a little nervous because the porch light wasn't on..when she smelled my dad's cologne. She said she relaxed immediately and was able to find the right key and get into the house safely. The scent lingered for just a moment after she got inside..and then was gone.

I'm off to check on Mr. Z! :)

Hi All..It was strange quite awhile after my dad passed away, my DIL asked me if my dad wore Old Spice (she had barely known him before he died). She said she smells it in her house all time..yep, she was right..that was what dad wore!

I love the smell of rain and flowers and (now this is weird) but rodeo smells. It reminds me of my dad taking us to the Stock Show every year when we were kids. I also love the smell of food cooking at someone's house other than my own :) Pop Tarts just don't smell that great!

RENEE EVE: I am really sorry you are having so many problems right now. I am glad you are in touch with doctors and keeping a close watch on your son. As Sandie said, "parenting isn't for wimps" and "getting old isn't for sissys"...I'd like to hear a good quote!

ZONA: I will be so glad to know your husband has put up those orange lights. We needed them yesterday. JODI did not wear her Bronco shirt and I knew it as I watched the Chiefs score get higher. Right after my Mom died, my Dad slept in their extra bedroom for months (he found he lying across their bed). In those first few weeks, I would go into their bedroom and wrap myself up in her blanket and just drink in her smell. It felt like she was giving me a hug.

I have a great sense of smell, at times tho it is a bad thing, as if something really smells bad, I smell it so quickly. I will share a secret, I carry a small spray of bath and body (any scent) in my pocketbook, and when I get a whiff of a bad smell I take it out and spray it right in the air, right in front of my nose, I don't even care who sees me....

If a client walks in, and sits at my desk and has a funky smell, I take out the spray and spray in my hands as if its antibacterial spray. And once they leave the febreeze comes out and it sprayed on the chair...

I just can't take a bad smell...

My throat is better, its not on fire, however now its one big tickle.. I can't stop the coughing...
Which then leads to the nose running and the eyes watering...

Carol, thanks for the well wishes and thanks for the kudos on the weight loss and walking. :) I walked 7,646 steps today, not as many as some days but above my goal of 7500.

I love the smell of coffee but I don't like to drink it. Also, when I buy dryer sheets, I am very fussy about which one to get. I can stand there for several minutes trying to get just the right smell. I LOVE GAIN, that stuff is the BOMB, it smells GREAT and the clothes stay smelling good for a long long time too.

Shirley, Please just check in so we can know what happened with the Hurricane! I hope you are well today and that you got up a little and got moving some.

On that note, I just can't leave the 69, not that I would know about that stuff in real life anymore..LOL.

Okay, now I have to even it up.

Good evening feathered friends!

MEK...congrats on 1st! You were sure up early.

RENEE...Teenagers today have so much more to deal with then when we were kids. But, don't ever think you failed Anthony. You are doing the right thing getting him help. And while it sux that he now has Chicken Pox, maybe it is just what he needed...a week home alone with you. Lot's of time to talk about things. {{{hugs}}} to you and your family.

TINKA...it was nice to see you post again. I hope you are feeling better. {{hugs}}

SCIRISH...fun blog! I hope your shots went ok. I had a series in my back, too. If ya wanna talk about it, drop me a ms message. Crossing my fingers they work wonders for you, as they did for me.

I too love the smell of Lilacs, probably my favorite scent of all flowers. I also love the smell of baking bread and brewing coffee. And Brut! I can still smell the scent of Brut from a guy I dated a million years ago that wore it. I can think about it and voila...I smell it. And I get chills ;)

SHIRLEY...your meals are also something I can mentally smell! I wish you find your yellow SOON...I miss you.

Renee: Welcome to the teenage years. I sure hope that you get help for your son with the cutting. Be thankful, you caught it now, because that is a bad habit for some kids these days. Once they get the habit, it is hard for them to stop.

I am so sorry you are going through so much lately. If only our kids knew the worry and love we have for them, they would behave better during their teenage years (okay, maybe not but it sounded good!). One thing I used to say to myself a lot during those years was, "Whatever doesn't kill me, will only make me stronger".

You'll get through it, just hang in there mom!

Goldie I find it interesting that you don't like the smell of olives. I absolutely love olives, all kinds.

LynnD LOL @ you hanging over the tub.

SacBarb Why do people try to catch puke in their hands? It never, ever works.

Jodi That story about you in your mother's blanket really touched my heart. (((HUGS)))
