This was def going to be a nothing blog, I was going to do a quick Happy Thong Thursday blog, but with all the devastation in Haiti, I could not find myself being lighthearted. So sad for all affected. Port au Prince is such a poor country, and then you add a 7. 0 earthquake on top of and it certainly becomes a tragedy. I am in hopes that many countries will help. I read in the comments yesterday that some commentators were not very nice in what they had to say, I do not know what they said, as I did not see them. I will try and catch in on the internet today. I know the United States will def help, as our leaders have already pledged to do what we can.
The pictures that are emerging from Haiti, are horrific. Downed housing, bodies, rumble and much more. I can only wonder how long it will take to rebuild.
I have three Haitian clients that left for their homeland on Tuesday. I can't stop thinking of them, I keep seeing them in my office buying their tickets. We reached out for their families, but they have not heard from them. I hope they are ok. If I find out anything I will keep you all posted.
My thoughts are truly with Port au Prince, and all the folks effected by the earthquake.

wow....that IS something~ The first bulletin in my email this morning was on PAP...what to do with those booked to fly there~ So sad that this happened, especially to a place that is so poor in the first place. My prayers are with them~

Yes, the events in Haiti are horrible. Yes, we should help out. Yes, there are still idiots running amok amongst us who will turn even a natural disaster into a political issue.

I watched some CNN coverage on Haiti last night, but respectful as I am of CNN, there were just things I don't need or want to see. I know people are hurt and dying; I don't need to watch it.
Further, I saw a report (again, from CNN) where they did a fly-by in a helo. I viewed carefully captured images of pancaked homes, people standing on the ground and cars moving on the decrepit roads.
What does this mean? Is it possible there is some means of helping a little bit right now? Like a medical supply air drop? But instead, we get pictures?

The news I watched last night showed the US has helped in getting some of the cell communications back up. We also have aide teams there, and we also helped with the tower for the airport. The problem it seems is that the devastation is so bad that getting supplies from the airport to where they are needed is the challenge as their government is in chaos as the gov't buildings are gone and they still don't know how many govt officials etc... are injured or dead.
We have also deployed a Naval medical ship but it was a ways out and will take a few day to get there. Also two Naval cutters are on the way that are closer to help in the interim.
There is also medical equipment at the airport but again the transportation problem. Many from around the world have arrived to supply aide and experts in disaster search.
The fear at this point because the infrastracture has collapsed who will take the lead in getting the aide to people. They are a bit afraid of being mobbed as they get vehicles moving as people will soon be getting very desperate.
Breaks my heart.
Bonachichi I really think we need to see the pictures of the devastation and what is going on. It is to easy for people to deny and turn their backs if we don't face the horror of this.
It is also a call to wake up in my opinion that this can even happen here at anytime. You and I live in quake zones. We need everyone to look at this and learn how can we improve in our country by helping with this disaster?
Also by offering aide and responding quickly we show that we are the America that comes to help in a crisis and if God forbid it does happen here, other countries will respond in kind if we ever need the help.
Carol I ache for those clients of yours. I would be awake worrying about them at this point.
I texted a money donation and all I can offer now is prayers for the victims.

I too am deeply saddened by Haiti. As the old saying goes (doesnt' matter if you believe or not) "But for the grace of god, there go I" is so true. Doesnt' matter if it is a hurricane, earthquake, tornado,tsunami, we could all experience the same kind of horrific events.
Give if you can, $5, $10 or whatever you can afford to the Red Cross to help. Nothing worse than sitting and watching and wondering if there is something I could do to help. Every little bit helps.

According to news reports, there is massive aid coming, however getting it dispersed and in the proper hands is a problem. Last night Brian Williams was reporting about a neo-natal monitor just sitting at the airport- no one to come get it, and no electricity to use it. Hopefully that will all get straightened out when the aid workers arrive and start to delegate.
On a cheerier note- it is Thursday and it is a nice long weekend! Love those Holidays on a Monday... :)

LynnD; I understand and respect your point of view. You are a go-getter, you want to get the word out. It's right for you to feel that way. But do we need to see all the dead children, or do they need that helicopter to transport some urgently needed supplies that are ready to go, waiting for transport? You can't piss & moan about no help when you have it but don't make use of it.
I think those people are brain dead because they could fly supplies into the target zones (they're going there anyway) and still get their pictures.
I am in no position to make negative comments because I am predisposed to find fault where it may not exist. LynnD, nothing was meant to be directed at you; I know if you were there, you'd be getting things going and getting stuff done.
Not only am I predisposed to find fault, but I am also unwilling to give my targets the benefit of the doubt. So shame on me.

Bonachichi I did not take offense at all. I by no means respect our news media today. I do think that the generations behind me have been so desensitized that sadly graphic pictures maybe the only way to get throught to them how dire this situation is.
I also belive that we need a jolt out of our complacency to get things done. I know that I at times live in my safe world and tend to think it is like this for everyone. Then a tragedy like this happens and it makes me find my empathy, sympathy and humanity again.
I am lucky in my world that if the images really get to me I can simply turn it off. Sadly the people in the middle of it can't. So in essence I feel like I am helping the reports coming out by bearing witness for these people.
Do I think the news media should have an obligation to help other than to send reporters? Yes. Do I know they haven't? No so until I hear differently I will not judge.
Yes there are many in our media where it is all about the ratings, I am not naive, but I am hopeful that when they are in the middle of all of this chaos they take pause and question their values.
There is that pragmatic and sensitive hopeful side all at once with me. In the long run all I have is hope.

The Haitians were the first to reject slavery in the Western hemisphere. They rejected all that it stood for...
The American slave owners were shocked at this outrage and to prevent the disease from spreading throughout the US and Caribbean, slave owners prevailed upon the US government to reject any overtures of Haitians which would allow them to be treated as free peoples.
Sanctions of all kinds were put upon Haiti by all the colonial powers to ensure that the experiment of free black people in the west fail.
Poverty in Haiti has less to do with pacts with the devil, or moral turpitude than to the fact colonial powers could not allow Haiti to succeed.
Do you know that the Haitians actually feed their children mud pies and biscuits to calm their hunger.....
I don't want to anger anyone but I want to say that the Red Cross is a corrupt organization and your money would do more good somewhere else...the Red Cross is an organization that feeds on itself and looks more to it's own needs...
I hope when they rebuild they use rebar in the concrete and block houses... there would not have been so much death and damage done if they weren't so poor that they did not have proper building materials....
Regarding the now destroyed presidential palace... Such opulence amidst the poverty of Haiti speaks volumes about the government.
Did you know that under Under Baby Doc Duvallier, it's reported that an entire floor used to be 'air conditioned' down to walk-in fridge temperatures... just so that the president and his cronies wives and mistresses would have a place to wear their mink coats??
Anyway.....Doctors without borders are there but 3 of their bases are inoperable.....and I just read that the head of the UN Mission to Haiti as well as the Catholic archbishop of Port-au-Prince, Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot, have been reported to be among the dead....
My thoughts and prayers go out to the people in Haiti. What a terrible tragedy.
Thank you all for your kind words upon the death of my Dad on Monday. It's so hard, as many of you know, but your words bring me comfort. My Dad put up this best effort but it was just too much for him. Even though the last two months have been difficult, I cherish the time I was able to spend with him and the closeness we shared as we faced this horrible thing called cancer.
Mom and Dad moved here to Augusta last year but Dad wanted to be buried in MD, where he spent most of his life. We'll be heading there next week for the funeral.

btw....I was playing golf with my niece in the Dominican republic and talked to our caddy about going into Haiti for some voodoo supplies and he warned me that it would be far to dangerous for me to do that....I thought it was strange that I was talking about needing bloodroot....drawing powder and coyote teeth and hes talking to me about danger.....(insert sinister laugh here)
And while we are on the subject...in the near future I will be needing a lock of hair and a few toenail clippings from some of you.....so if you happen to get a haircut or a pedi in the meantime you'll be ready to wrap these in a little parchment and add just a tiny drop of blood! Simple!!

LynnD, you are another of those amazing people. I'll spill the beans and tell all that I had a conversation with Tina one night, and she told me what a true jewel you are. It was months ago, but I remember her words; "I love that woman".
I am grateful for the brief education on Haiti. I'd always thought of it as a care-free island nation, a place to go for vacation. Sometimes we don't see what's in front of us, yes?
Katrina was something we knew was coming and could mobilize for. Earthquakes are entirely different. No warning and no idea where.
I was very young when the 1971 Sylmar quake struck, but I remember it. My grandparents' home collapsed. We emptied out milk jugs and filled them with water for those who didn't have it. I've also been around for every quake that's struck SoCal since then. We have crack teams of experts that are specially trained to deal with the aftermath of a quake. Right here. We know though, that after a quake, we're on our own for 24-48 hours because that's how long it takes to mobilize, even when help is right here.
When the Northridge quake hit in 1994, I was very surprised when, after the utilities were back up, I learned from the news that we were all dead or dying and what hadn't collapsed was burning. I did not feel dead, crushed nor was I on fire that I am aware of.
I was very proud yesterday, to see all the military transport vehicles on the freeways. Our response teams are responding. It will never be fast enough, though. The only "fast enough" is to be there and ready before it happens.

CAROL: I watched Anderson Cooper last night..and the pictures were just awful..the people so scared and confused. The loss of life..the destruction..heartbreaking. I just don't have the words anymore..all I can do is pray for all the people that this earthquake affected. It's so very sad.
Disturbing stories starting to surface about how the health implications of this disaster will play out over time. Haiti was already a time capsule of life in the tropics hundreds of years ago, when all sorts of enteric and other diseases were present that have been either eliminated or controlled in much of the world today. Not so in Haiti, where the medical infrastructure was thin to begin with. Now, with no medical infrastructure left at all, these diseases could spread like wildfire, which would qualify the earthquake as a "prefect storm" of a medical disaster.

The tragedy in Haiti is overwhelming. So much devastation and so much to do with no infrastructure left. What a daunting task ahead.

Please be cautious about the charities you select to aide the Haitian relief. For years I have donated to AmeriCares. 99% of all money raised is used for aide...not administrative costs. You can read up on them at AmeriCaresdotorg.
The FBI issued a warning yesterday about fake Haitian Relief Funds. I scanned the article, so don't have firm details, but if you go to the FBI's public website, they have a list of either good or bad charities.
I would assume that LynnD could recommend some decent ones.

CHI CHI...It is disgusting how some charities KEEP the majority of the money that they get. The people that need it get very little...some as little as only 10%.
I am not sure, but I think Drs. Without Borders is a reputable charity as well.
I was watching Diane Sawyer in Haiti and there are true miracles happening. Survivors are still being found.
I just looked it up and Drs. without borders gives 87% of the money it gets

There is a girl in the new class at work who is from Haiti. Her family is all there and she hasn't heard a word from them. A friend of mine came to talk to me today and she was sniffling. I asked her if she had a cold. She didn't. She happened by the classroom during a break and the girl was in there alone sobbing uncontrollably. My friend went in to give her a hug and stayed and cried with her.
I love Anderson Cooper......if anyone can get into a country, he can and does~ What I want to know is how he can look so hot 24/7~
