~ Handmade with Love ~

 by Bebbi

Things that my daughter made mean a lot to me.  She has always made cute handmade mementos.  In the picture above are three of them.  The middle one is the latest thing she made.  She made it for Mother's Day and it says, "Mothers hold their child's hands for a short while but their hearts forever."  She did this one with her "Little" in Big Brothers/Big Sisters.  Her "Little" made one for her Mom, too.

The one on the right is one she made for me when she was probably ten or eleven.  I still use it!  It is well worn but the "Mommy" has held up well over the years.  It also has stars and hearts around it too.  :D

The one on the left is one she made to commemorate her first trip as an adult.  She and her girlfriend drove to Cocoa Beach and they each made one to remember their trip.  The souvenir reminds me of the anxiety I had worrying about her during that trip...haha.

I have quilts from when I was a baby and I have crocheted blankets my grandmother made for me and for my kids.  I have lots of clothes my mom made.  I have a cross stitched bird I made for my grandmother.  I got it back after she died and it hangs in my kitchen.

My Mom makes Memory Bears.  She takes an item of clothing from the person that has passed and makes it into a bear.  This can be treasured for years by the loved one.  She has even made one in flannel to represent my grandfather.  She puts a picture of the loved one on the front in a handmade frame.  The saddest one she did was of a baby boy.  The Mom had her made a bear out of his baby blanket.

Do you have handmade things that you have had for years?  If so, who made them and what makes them important to you?  Are there any handmade things that you like to make and give to people?  What is your one most treasured homemade item...whether you made it or you got it?  I can't wait to hear your stories. :D

Morning oh pretty one!

Good morning to all the Hooters today.

I have lots of things that my boys made me when they were little. I now have things that I made my mother too, since she started handing it all back to us kids when she downsized.

The most precious things are now the things that Brynn and Gavin make. They gave me handmade flower pot holders for Mother's day. And of course I save every picture they color for me!

Busy morning...have a good day everyone!

Morning Glories!

Well Bebbi you are the prettiest!

Tina I was teasing you yesterday! :)

Bebbi I have many handmade things that have been given to me over the years. I keep all of them. To me a handmade gift is so special and a real treasure.

I have crocheted blankets that an Aunt makes. I have embroidered pillow cases that one of my Grandmothers made. I have quilt squares that My Mother in law made before she passed away. Also two paintings she did.

I also have a quilt that an Aunt made that has the family names and a picture of my grandparents in the middle.

Several things my children made over the years, that are lopsided and glittered. :) I use a bowl by my kitchen sink to hold found pennies etc... that my son made in the second grade.

They are all special and I could never pick just one as the best.

I have made many things over the years to give to others. Now do they consider them treasures??? I don't know.

You're supposed to keep all that shit? Mum used to do that; drove us nuts. I remember a handmade Christmas ornament hanging on the knob of a cupboard for over 5 years. Continuously.

Then the counter space. Filled with crap none of us cared about. She idn't have a kitchen, she had a junk store.

My view is going to be unpopular, but if it doesn't serve a purpose, get rid of it. My bong for instance, sits proudly on my kitchen table. I use it every day.

Bonachichi: Your sentimental spirit need refreshing..haha. It's okay...you keep your sentiment in your brain rather than in a handmade pencil holder..haha. :) You are too funny!

Bebbilane said...

Bonachichi: Oh, and I had a feeling that you would feel that way..lol.

Bebbi, hooray! You are first, first on your own blog lol!! You learned well from Tina!

Ignoring Bonachi;)

At first I didn't think I had anything to write about. My Mother was not a knitter , seamstress, artist, writer, etc. Then I remembered one thing she made that meant a lot to me.Our old High school had been torn down to be replace by a new fancy dancy one. I loved the old creaky thing! Anyway she managed to get a hold of one of the old bricks and stitched a satin like cloth around it and wrote the name of the school and year it was torn down. It looked like a 5 yr old made it, but I loved it! I still display it proudly!
Have a great day everyone! You too Bonachi, lighten up! :)

Good Morning!

BEBBI: My mom was the ultimate crafter..she could sew, crochet, knit, embroider and she was an artist as well. I have so many things that she made over the years. It's a wonder to me that she could make all of these things and still take care of our home and family..but she did. One of the things I really love is a Nativity scene that she made in ceramics and then painted herself. It's absolutely gorgeous. I've always been afraid it would break and hesitated displaying it at Christmas. Mr. Z reminded me she made it to be seen and not stored away, so we now set it up every year.

After my mom passed away we found a small ceramic..thing..that I made in school. The opening at the top is too small for pencils..so I'm guessing it was supposed to be a paintbrush holder. It's a hideous shade of yellow. My initials are scratched into the bottom..and I'm guessing it was from about 1967. I was really surprised to find that she had kept it all these years..even I would have thrown it away!! ;)

What wonderful memories writing about this topic bring..great blog today BEBBI..thank you!

BEBBI: Yes you are! #1 or not! :)

BIRRRDDDEEEEE!! Happy Happy Birthday!!! I hope you have a wonderful day! Swak!! ♥♥♥

GOLDIE: I found a box of drawings my nieces and nephews made for us when we lived in Ca. They were 4, 5and 6 yrs old. They are now in their 20's. It's so cool to be able to look back and see the love in every drawing.

LYNN: I've kept all the cards I've gotten from owls too. I also have a beautifully embroidered set of pillow cases that were made for me...I've never used them though..they are just too pretty and I don't want to ruin them.

BONACHI: I think everything homemade serves a purpose..it reminds us that we are loved.

MARY: I love that your mom came up with a way to immortalize your old high school for you..very creative!

Bebbi~ Congrats on prettiest~ :D LOVE ur blog!!!~

My dad made the Nativity Scene that we had growing up. When my brother and I got married, he made one for each of us, too. I LOVE it more than anything I possess...even more than my childrens' crafts!!! Does this mean I love my daddy more than my kids? hmmmmmmm....prolly~ :)~

On the flip side, on Mother's day, I didn't make cards this year. When I talked to my MIL, she was kind of snippy that I didn't send her a homemade card. I was offended at first (mostly cuz I'm used to that with her!), but then realized it was a compliment! Everything I've cross-stitched for her hangs on her walls at home....even the Christmas stuff! All year long. :D I think she's the one who appreciates the stuff I make the most....even more than my own mother~

Goldie~ I would keep everything a grandchild of mine made too! But I won't start keeping any of that crap for another 5-10 years! GOT THAT!!!!!! (I sure hope God heard that!!!!) :)~

Lynndie~ YAY!!! Ur gonna scrapbook!!!!! :D

Bonachichi~ dang you made me laugh! I will admit, some of the stuff is uglier than crap! Last night tho, I went down to the basement to get some laundry, and behind me is my scrapbook desk...with this silhouette framed of my oldest! Ugly frame and all....even taped frame cuz he broke it on the way home.....it's so precious to me....especially since he'll be leaving soon for college! Honey....I want you go outside to the trash can...lift up the lid, sift thru all your crap...and search until you find your sensitive bone~ mkay?~ :D

Mary~ that is so sweet~ what a sweet mommy~

Zona~ USE THOSE PILLOW CASES! Unless ur afraid of the low thread count like DeeDee~ :)~

Tina~in_ut said...

OMG Shirley!!!! I just had an orgasm!!!!! :D

Mary/MI said...

Tina, did I mention a beautiful scarf someone made for me? ;)

I know this sounds spookey, but here goes. I made small shadow boxes for all my siblings when my Mother passed away. I made a small cloth doll and made a dress for it out of our Fave dress our Mother wore. Mom always wore her head in a bun, so I got fake hair from the craft store and shaped it into a bun to put on it. I placed a picture of her next to our family home and some of her favorite bible quotes that she had on these old tiny card, along with a miniature bible in there too. Everyone loved them.
I still have ceramics and drawings my sons made. Luckily they didn't make too many lol!!

Mary/MI said...

Tina! Shirley gave you an orgasm?? She isn't even in the nest yet! What a woman!!

Tina~in_ut said...

i know! huh, mary!!! :)~

Mary~ I don't think that's spooky~ I think that's totally cute of you to do that for your siblings~ mwah~

bonachichi said...

Well, I have to profess some indignance at your responses ;). I do TOO have stuff. Letters I wrote to my kids on their birthdays every year. I'll give them to them one day. All my STUFF though, is in one of those under-bed boxes. I'd saved my older daughter's cheer outfit, etc. and when she found them, she told me she didn't care about 'em anymore; I should just toss it.

Now I am sentimental about my tools. I've got tools I've used once that I wouldn't part with for anything. But an ugly handmade Christmas ornament hanging on the cupboard for 5 July's in a row just doesn't make any sense to me. I think that's called kitch, isn't it?

Birdee said...

Hello Everyone!!

Bebbi, congrats on being the prettiest! Like your blog...what your daughter wrote on the candle is very touching.

I've always liked getting homemade stuff from my kids...more than store bought..saved it all.

Goldie, I agree...things the g-kids make are even sweeter!
I really like when they make their handprints.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! So nice to read and made me smile....which I needed!
It's been so cold, rainy and overcast here lately. It's finally sunny and feeling like summer today. I'm going to spend as much time as I can outside.
Got lots of weeds to pull now.

Would have been out before now, but I've been waiting for a groundhog and her 3 babies to finish looking for food and scamper back into the woods. Didn't want to scare them or have the dogs go all ape sh!t on them.

Hope you all have a good day!

Again.....Thank you! Thank you!!
xoxoxoxox

Bebbilane said...

Birdee: That was so sweet of you to wait like that. Very nice. Did they finally scurry back into the woods?

Rut Roh, bonachichi, we caught you with sentimental stuff..haha. ;) You are too much like a man! haha. My hubby has tools he wouldn't part with either..lol. You are so funny.

Bebbilane said...

Bonachichi: Oh, and my daughter told me to throw some stuff out once..a frame with all types of pictures of her..I couldn't do it! So glad I didn't..that girl would throw out her own mother if she wasn't being used for more than a year..oh wait, THAT'S ME!

Bebbilane said...

Speaking of throwing out stuff, Daughter wants to have a yard sale this weekend. So, we are going to do it. Goodbye junk..now, the fun part is when Mr. Bebbi comes out to inspect to make sure we didn't touch any of his junk...lol. He's such a hoarder...! hehe

Bebbilane said...

And, if any of you want to come to it..just let me know..you get a special discount..everything half off for Owls only.

Bebbi The lady in red is first today! Congrats!

Goldie I have a drawer full of my kids' drawings. Not every one they did, but some special ones that really make me smile.

LynnD LOL @ you setting your kids up for the WTC moment. I have two little bowls on my mantle that my kids made. They're very "rustic". LOL

Zona I'm glad you display the Nativity scene. Your mom would be happy that you're enjoying it.

Mary I love it that your mom gave you a brick from your high school! That's really cool!

Tina I have a framed needlepoint of pink roses on my bedroom wall that my husband's mother made for me. She was already in her late seventies when I first met her and she wanted to make sure I had something to remember her by. It's very special to me.

Bonach Do you have sentimental attachment to your bong?

Bebbi I still have a little crocheted jacket that my grandmother made that I wore home from the hospital when I was a newborn. I had my first born wear it home from the hospital, too.

Happy Thursday Owls.

Bebbi, your blog brings up some fond memories of when my kids were young. I still have a glittered star my oldest made when he was in kindergarten and I hang it on the tree every year. Most of the glitter is gone, but the memories will never fade.

My mother started painting when she was 65 and she got pretty good after a few years, but the ones that mean the most to me are some of her early ones. They show her heart. I wouldn't give them up for anything.

I have a candle that I made for my Mom when I was in Girl Scouts (shaddup Tina). I decorated it with faux pearls made into an "M" for "Mom". She treasured it and it made me feel so good.

Frankly, I have trouble getting rid of anything given to me, weather handmade or bought.

Mary/MI said...

Bonachi, I got all choked up over your "attachment to your tools", and happy that your bong can still bring you pleasure lol! I knew you had a soft spot!

Tina, If Shirley and your special "tool" are all you need to reach orgasms, I guess you won't be needing my boobs anymore lol!!

sacBarb said...

Tina, if you let me use your Hubby's tool, I promise not to let it get rusty.

GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE
I am very sentimental. So much so that someone once told me that I needed to cut the umbilical cord. I have school papers and pictures from when Jennifer was little. I have kept every card and letter sent to me by family and friends. I held onto clothes from when Jennifer was a baby, which I have given to her for Georgina.

I think the most special gift was that of a comment made to me by Jennifer when she was aound 7 years old. She looked at me and said, "thank you". I asked her for what and she said "just everything".

Thank you for your blog today BEBBI.

Mary/MI said...

One more collectible..
I saved a baby bootie that had a huge hole in it, a baby blanky, and a 1 year journal of my neighbor's son Sammy.I took care of him from 6 mo. until he went to school. I will give them to 6'5" Sam to do as he pleases when I attend his Graduation open house next month. sniff sniff!

bonachichi said...

Bebbi, you caught me. I am like a man. One thing I've learned is that as soon as you get rid of a tool, you'll need it.

What I don't understand is this attachment to "stuff". I mean no offense... Mum had a china cabinet. There was a complete service for 12 in it, beautifully displayed. Lead crystal glasses, silver silverware and a formal table/chairs. As far as I know, nobody's used any of it in the last 40 years at least.

That's a whole room devoted to nothing useful. I've dusted that stupid china cabinet and it takes an hour to move everything, dust underneath and move it back. Why? Because it's PRETTY! Well, it's not pretty to me, it's a pain in the arse. I don't know why Dad doesn't get rid of it.

Tina~in_ut said...

and quite frankly....I don't know why you dust it! Isn't that against the law in CA? It was when I lived there....Utah changed their laws too....no dusting here either~ :)~

BEBBI - I have so many things that my kids have made, especially all the homemade Christmas ornaments. Oh, and some of my fav's are the clay creations. One year Tim made an owl (!!!) and this year Jake made a flying pig!! I most definitely will not be throwing either of these treasures away!! I have blankets that both of my grandmothers crocheted, a vest that my great-grandmother crocheted, a scarf that TINA crocheted, and a snazzy pair of vibrating slippers that LYNN made me!!

BIRDEE - Happy Birthday 2 u!!!

Waving a wing @ all my beloved HOoters. It's been a long ass day, but totally worth being tired. Supper is almost ready and then I have to take Jake to his tournament team baseball practice.

BEBBI...great blog. I love the sentimental things I have accumulated thru the years. It may be stuff, or crap or whatever, but each piece of crap means something special to me. Good night Bebbi!
Great blog!
Congrats on 1st!
I have a quilt that my Grandmother made me. It has a few rips in it and the edge is frayed. I have it lying over a rocking chair that my Grandfather made. I have a bookshelf that Dad made me. Mum was into knitting and made a lot of sweaters, hats, mittens, and socks. Most were for Robin or her friends. Although I think she did make me one sweater...I don't have it anymore. Mum kept some of our stuff that we made in school but not a lot. There is still a crossstitch that I did hanging in the kitchen. I didn't do it in school though. That's about all I remember.
Good Night Owls!!

Well I just got the phone with Tina. She's alive!

She also informed me of two things.. I've been bitchy lately. This, I knew. I just couldn't help myself, but I'll try to tone it down if you all will call me out on it when I let loose. K?

The next thing, I didn't know. I thought everyone knew I don't drink or take drugs, so a bong on my table would not be considered useful in my house and hence, does not in fact, decorate my table. I've seen such devices, and though they're pretty, I'd much rather put some fake dog poo on the table. You know, for a conversation piece.

Mary/MI said...

Bonachi, if you want doggie poo I will gladly send you some. Our puppy is a poop machine. But if you want Tina's poop, I am sure she will gladly send it as her shit don't stink! lol!

Nite everyone!

bonachichi said...

Mary, thanks for the offer, but I've got real animal poo all over the place. I was thinking more of that plastic stuff that just looks like poo.

Feel free to send me real poo, though... I'll put it in a sack on your doorstep, set it on fire and ring your doorbell.
