~ It Can Always Be Worse ~

by Tina~in_ut

As usual, on the way to the doctor, Dad did what he always does.  He talked.  Nonstop!  I still can't get used to it because he was always such a quiet man.  He usually talks about what's worrying him the most, and it's usually a family member.  This time, he talked about the side effects of the chemo.  His hands and feet are pealing and hurt like no tomorrow, his feet and ankles are way swollen, and he has a bad rash.  I didn't want to seem insensitive because I've never had to go thru what he is, but I couldn't help but think, "Dang, dad........it could be worse!"

I asked him how he was sleeping.  He said that he was back sleeping in his own bed, and actually sleeping rather well.  Before, on the chemo pills, he hardly slept at all unless he slept on the couch.  I asked him if he had any pain in his bones.  He said that all that had gone away.  Before, he was constantly telling us about this pain or that pain.....in his ribs, shoulder, or back.  Of course we all took that very seriously because of the kind of cancer he has.

After his doc appointment, he had to go for his chemo.  I waited for him and, hours later, when he came out, he was his usual self, raring to go and wanting out of there.  Even before we got to the car, he was telling me that he has it so good and it could be so much worse.  He told me about this very thin woman and how they had so much trouble finding a vein to give her the chemo.  There was another woman in her 80's who had heart problems and diabetes on top of cancer.  In his words, "She was a mess!  They didn't even want to give her the meds because they were worried about her heart.  They should just take her out back and......"  I asked him, ".....and?"  He didn't answer me, but I knew what he meant.  This was my in to tell him what I thought.  I told him that yes, it could be so much worse and as weird as it is to say, he's lucky.  It's a very strange thing to say to someone with cancer and a broken neck, but had my dad become paralyzed, I don't think he'd ever consider chemo.  He wouldn't be able to stand not being able to get around.  It would have killed him.

So now when I wake up with a back ache, or remember that I have seizures, I think, "My God!  That's nothing!"  There are people with broken backs or those that wear helmets because their seizures aren't under control.  I have to remind myself that it can always be worse and thank God for what I do have!

Need to hop in the shower. I'm going to go see my cousin's new baby!! And visit my Aunt Jane. Feeling like some "mommy" time.....since DIANNE isn't in WESconsin anytime soon!! (I swear that was one of my favorite memories....sitting on your lap that last morning!!)

Everyone have a great day ♥

Bebbilane said...

Jodi: NO on the traveller's butt..thank goodness! I really believe there must be a chemical that releases inside our bodies when we travel that keeps us from having to "poop" at a bad time..and then once we relax to some extent..then "BAM!"... you know what I'm talkin about too! haha.

TMI yet?

Tina so true. Some times we just need reminded that could be me. A Wake up call that what you think you are going through, someone else has a much harder row to hoe.

Good Morning!

TINA: I admire your attitude. I need to learn to be more positive right at the outset when something bad happens. When I hurt my back last week and had to use a cane to walk..I remember sitting in the chair and wondering why this happened to me..totally feeling sorry for myself. Then Nikki needed to go out. While making my way to the door I realized how lucky I was that I was able to get up and let Nikki out..that I could still get around, even if it was more slowly. I also knew I would get better..some people hurt their backs and never recover. It usually takes me a little time and a little whining..but after a while I do realize that I need to just be thankful that what has happened is treatable and fixable.

I'm glad you're dad is doing so well and pray that each day he feels better.

JODI: You are looking mahvelous! Enjoy the time with your aunt and your cousin's new baby! :)

BEBBI: I believe we've all experienced the BAM! ;)

LYNN: Are you feeling better today?

Mr Z is on a 'route ride' today. He had to go with one of the truck drivers from his company to see exactly what it is they do. He called me a little while ago and sounded like a kid at Christmas! He is loving riding in a big rig..he even got to honk the horn!! LMAO!! Boys and their toys..some things never change no matter how old they get! :D

Bebbilane said...

Zona: That's so cute!

Zona said...

BEBBI: Ok..I'm intrigued..what are you 'Gluging'?? ;)

Bebbilane said...

Zona: I don't know..that just came into my head..glug glug glug..odd huh. I guess like chug chug chugging along..except glugging.

Bebbilane said...

maybe that is the noise my brain makes as it is trying to function today..haha.

Good Morning Hooters!

JO-Ho, say hi to Aunt Jane and have a wonderful day!

tina~ You are so right, it could be worse. The title of your blog made me think of my dad.

My father fought for life every minute of every day and went thru horrendous side effects from his diabetes. He lost a leg, he lost sight in one eye, he had 2 brain surgerys, heart bypass, too many surgerys on his legs to replace and open veins, diabetic reactions, etc, etc.

I never ever heard him complain. NEVER- He used to say, "It could be worse, I could be dead".

He died at age 61, and at that time his heart was only operating at less than 15%. The doctors said it was a miracle he was alive, many, many times over his adult life.

tina~ I'm glad your Dad is doing so well. Oh, and let him talk all he wants, about whatever he wants. When he can't anymore you are going to miss that.

I hope you all have a wonderful day~~I am going to be out in the SUN (I think that is what it is) today taking Stanley for photo-ops!

wow! Hugs to Tina and Goldie and Shirley and everybody who's had to deal with very sick parents. I can't believe that mine are 79 and 89 and still in reasonably good health.

Good morning!

Tina your dad certainly has a great attitude! To me, the attitude is such a huge part of the overall survival of people going through treatment for whatever illness they face.

My parents have both been through cancer treatment, my dad twice now. They both did so well I feel because they faced it with courage and determination.

They just celebrated their 54th anniversary!

I'm glad your dad is doing well!

Zona how is your back, are you feeling better?

Jodi enjoy the new little one! We recently got to meet my new little niece, almost 4 months old (they live in Germany and came for a visit last month! We got extra time due to the volcano ash which closed the airports!)

Bebbi you look lovely in red! Good luck with the BM! :)

Goldie, what a fighter your dad was. Such courage.

Hi Lynn and Bear, hope you all have a good day today!

We are expecting low 80s today with a chance of rain on Monday. Is that crazy or what??

Bebbilane said...

EBJ: Thanks for the compliment and LOL at "good luck with the BM"..roflmao..love it....and, no problems with that area right now...thank goodness.

Just_Lin said...

Jodi Hullo! LOL Congrats on being the first beauty today. Love that pic of you Goldie and Inga Binga, btw. So cute! Have fun with that baby today.

Tina Great blog today! It's a good reminder to count our blessings. Your dad definitely has the right attitude, bless his heart. I find that I will whine over the little health issues, like this cold, but when I've had a genuine health crisis, I step up to the plate and just do what needs to be done to get through it.

LynnD LMAO! Yes, I agree. I like to visit babies but wouldn't want to have another one.

Zona What a cute story about Mr. Z. He's having a super fun day. Good for him.

Goldie Wow! I'm sorry he had to go through so much. I hope you are taking extra good care of yourself.

Bear I see we had a launch today. : )

EBJ I guarantee it won't be 80 here today. Right now it is 58 and overcast.

Bebbi I don't know what noise my brain makes. Unfortunately, it's probably just dead silence. LOL

Oh, and isn't it a sign of being old when people sit around talking about their BM's? Ijs

Just_Lin said...

I need to start cleaning house, but instead, I'm compelled to check my freakin' pretend farm. Who the hell did this to me (SacBarb)...?

Bebbilane said...

J/L: Definitely a sign of getting old..haha....!

Dianne/Denver said...

Good Afternoon Hooters: TINA, your blog hits home with all of us, I think. How often I complain then here of one of my friends with something so serious and I am whining about whatever. I know sometimes our problems seem overwhelming and I had a doctor tell me once to not minimize our own challenges as they are hard for us at the time also. Yes, it could be so worse and I am grateful for my little aches and pains. After going thru so much with my daughter a couple of years ago....I am very grateful and thanks for reminding me to feel and think that way.

JODI YEA, you are first!! Don't you just love it when TINA is sleeping in? Watch out everyone for tomorrow as you know who will be first again.

Ok guys....I don't know how to tell you this BUT remember how you all thought MR GOLDIE liked you best? Well, (please don't tell GOLDIE) BUT I received a "persona' email from his very own email account today from MRGOLDIE. We were talking over football talk....ahhhhh it is so wonderful to have someone to converse with about this topic! So.....bottom line.....he likes me best!!!!~

Happy Furlough (for the CA folks) Friday Owls.

Jodi, a big HULLO to you in first. Have fun with the new baby.

Zona, LOL @ boys and their toys. And the bigger they get, the bigger the toys.

Bear, Good that your parents are enjoying good health. How is your sister doing?

J/L, I know I enabled you and I am not sorry. BTW, I sent you a brick today for your stable. Enjoy.

Waving a wing to all the other Owls. I hope you are all having a good day. ♥

JODI: I have fond memories of my little girl JODI sitting on my lap. I am your "proxy" mom. You are never too old to sit on a mom's lap....so mine is available anytime to you.

GOLDIE: Boy, your dad had to go through a lot. I am so sorry that he had all those problems and passed away at such a young age.

BEBBI: If you remember we were all talking about poop a lot at our meet and greet and some of you are pretty darn young to be already talking about it so much. It's okay for me as I am older...a tiny bit ....than you.

EBJ: I can';t believe Survivor is almost over either. I still don't know who I want to win after last nights elimination. Pav and Russell do play the game well but I can hardly stand Russell but I have to say he gives me a laugh. I can't wait for Bachelor to start either and I like the girl this time...but that usually changes as the show goes on. Do you watch Biggest Loser too? I love that show. Jillian is going to have her own this summer.

ZONA: HONK HONK....that must be MRZ driving by my house and saying hello. Glad he is enjoying his day. How are my flowers doing on FT? :)

Hey BEAR, where are you going this weekend? You always have such fun plans.

ANNIE: I love Lee too and vote for him. I loved your city. We took the water tour and it was so pretty and great flowers too.

I wanted to make a comment on BEBBI's blog from yesterday. I have reconnected with some HS people that really weren't very friendly to me in school but now they got old and go to the reunions and are on FB and have what I would call "normal". I also met a lady on our last cruise that accidentally got off the elevator on the wrong floor. It was about 12:30AM and I just finished the computer. We started talking and 2-1/2 hours later we said our goodnights. We met up numerous times on the ship and had lunch together as well. We are now emailing and calling one another. I love making new friends and I am pretty persistent keeping the old ones. Well, I do have one ex husband that doesn't keep in touch!!!

Dianne/Denver said...

SACBARB: We were typing at the same time. I am glad you finally got J/L to do FB and farming also. Did I ever show up as your friend on FT and FV? You are showing on both of mine.

J/L: We were so busy today. My husband had to take his car in at 9AM and leave it so I brought him home. We went out for a nice breakfast, hung out over three cups of coffee (how nice to talk without the dang TV on) and then came home and cleaned the garage. He is now taking a large load over to Goodwill. It only took us two hours with us both doing it. Now that is what I call a full day already. Guess I will go and get my nails done next as we leave for Texas on Monday so I have to look all pretty again.

Just_Lin said...

Dianne Boy, you have been busy today! Don't you just love to go out for breakfast? It's one of my favorite things to do, even alone. I take the book I'm reading along with me.

Bebbilane said...

Dianne: Wow, you did have a busy day. :) Thanks for the comments on my blog. It is nice to make new friends. I am enjoying that too with Facebook. It does seem like the high school relationships are a lot different now that we aren't in "high school"..haha. Oh, and it does sounds like Mr. Goldie likes you best..haha...

You were talking about poop problems, well my daughter (who would kill me if she read this) has them too. LOL, she was all bloated the first of the week and complaining about it so much. So today, I asked her if that ever worked itself out. Maybe it's the food we consume nowadays because I know more people with poop issues.

I am tired! Worked out at lunch and came home and ate soup and veggies. After I ate, I just wanted to sleep..lol..

Okay..daughter's home from college and we just move the fridge into the dining room (small one, from her dorm)..she is leaving so I will talk to you all later, gaters.

Hello Sacb!

Afternoon Owls!

It is 78 degrees here today. Unbelievable I know! Let me just say any sun in the NW brings out the craziest clothes and I have had more than an eyeful today! Let's just say I am traumatized. About the only thing I did not see was a thong bikini.

Zona I am some what better today. Just a slight headache. But I have more energy.

Dianne Mr. Goldie does not like you more! Geeeez That's a down right dirty lie!

Deedee a saw a few people that just have to be related to the woman in your avatar picture! Kissing cousins or maybe cousins that got married. imjs

TINA...your dad is so strong and quite the character! I bet he and CICI would have a blast chatting together!! It makes my heart happy that he is doing so well. And also that he has you to accompany him to the doc and chemo. I felt it was very important to take my mom to her appointments.

One time I took her to her Gastro doc. He was awesome. And you all know that sometimes things just fall outta my mouth, so I proceeded told him how much my mom and I liked him and that it takes a special person to look up butts at shit all day!! I couldn't even believe I said it! Luckily he laughed and remained a great doc to her!!

GOLDIE...you're dad sounds like an amazing man. I'm sorry he was taken so young and TOO early.

HODI...looking good!

I had a CRAPPPPPPPY day today. I don't know what the hell was wrong with me. I kept crying. Every little thing set me off. When I left work (1/2 hr early because I HAD to get the heck outta there) I just started driving. First I pulled into the Cirlce K lot and cried. Then I found myself driving to my cousin Elaine's. I guess I needed her "mommyness". I felt much better by the time I left her house.

Maureen said...

Maybe my crappy day was a psychic reaction to all the BM talk here!!

Bebbilane said...

Oh Mo: I am so sorry to hear you had a bad day. I hate days like that..I had a day like that the Tuesday after Chicago. HUGS..glad you found comfort and glad you are doing better.

making a quick pit stop again!
I have been gone all day. I think I covered most of lower Michigan lol!
After a Drs Apptmt.in Grand Rapids 60 miles West I had to drive south east to my Grandson's college ball game another65 miles from there and back to mid Mich 65miles and on to the North 90miles to make Preakness bets! I have to get up early to go back to GS,s ball game tomorrow. I don't have travelers butt...yet lol!

Tina, your blog reminds me of my standing answer to anyone who complains about how old they are. example, yesterday someone was complaining about turning 40! I said, some where there is an 80 yr old man wishing he was 40 again! Usually shuts them up lol!!

I need to farm and see what Tina has been up to.Also need to bond with puppy lol!

BEBBI...thanks. I had to work my stuff and Nicole's as she was off today, and there was one problem after another. And people that only do half assed jobs and then expect me to fix it was just wearing me down. And I was so pissed at my boss. She knew I was alone and not once did she even stop by my desk to ask if I needed any help with anything. I did call her on my way to Elaine's and told her what was going on and she said "why didn't you come and get me?" I tried numerous times to call or stop by her desk and she was never around. Grrrr

Maureen said...

MARY...thanks! I don't think TINA will be partaking in any {{{HUGS}}!!

Damn, you drove almost as much as I did to get to Chicago! Actually, that was about the number of miles from BIRDEE's to home!

Maureen said...

Ohh, I got 50! Yes TINA there is a silver lining to be found!!!

Bebbilane said...

Mary: Hopefully SuperSave will pull through to make it a triple crown hopeful! Glad you had safe travels!

Mo: Oh, it sounds very stressful! I am so sorry you had such a shitty day at work..uggh..I hate those days!

Tina, Furlough Friday takes place 3 Fridays a month for CA state employees who have to take the day off without pay and honor our governator.

Mo, you sound like me. I've been told I only open my mouth to change feet, however it's not true. I also open it to EAT. I'm sorry you had a bad day, but I'm glad you could get some "mommyness" from Elaine.

Bebbi, hi back at ya.

Dianne, Did you see my comment to you in A-51? Thanks again and they are half gone already.

Mary, That's a great come back. May I use it?

J/L, how's the stables coming along?

Bebbilane said...

I had the saddest news a few days ago but I have been hesitant to talk about it. A coworker has been battling cancer and he was finally cleared and came back to work a month or two ago. He has a couple of young daughters and is the same age as me. Well, I just found out that he had a scan and the tumors are back and tripled in size. He was going to Houston for treatment but will now be staying in Atlanta for treatment and told his wife they need to start making sure they have insurance polices and things set... Really, when my boss told me I almost chocked up and lost it. It's been on my mind all week. :( Please PLEASE pray for him and his family.

Bebbilane said...

Sorrry to burden everyone with that, I just am not very good with timing on this stuff..and I had to get it off my chest. It's been eating at me all week. I am going to bed..sweet dreams everyone and talk to you soon. Bev
