Pier 39 Sea Lions

by EBJ

No trip to San Francisco is complete without a visit to Pier 39, home to the famous sea lions.

Here is a little history of the sea lions from the Pier 39 website:

The sea lions camped out in PIER 39's West Marina have been endearingly coined, "Sea Lebrities." The boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves, taking over the docks in January 1990 shortly after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

At first they numbered from 10-50, but due to a plentiful herring supply, available dock space and the marina’s protected environment, the population grew to more than 300 within a few months.

Each winter, the population can increase up to 900 sea lions, most of which are male. During the summer months, the sea lions migrate south to the Channel Islands for breeding season, but in recent years a small group stays year-round at PIER 39's K-Dock.

Staff from The Marine Mammal Center's Kiosk, located next to the sea lions, are happy to inform visitors about these fun, flippered animals. Each weekend, weather permitting, the Center provides volunteer docents at K-Dock who explain sea lion behaviors and answer visitors’ questions. More information and interactive exhibits are available on Level 2 of PIER 39 at The Marine Mammal Center’s Interpretive Center and Gift Store.

EBJ that was one of my favorite things when I went to San Fran a few years ago. I loved see the silly sea lions basking and barking in the sun. I could not believe how many there were. I need another trip to see them again. I loved San Francisco.

Well I get to stay home today I have a list as long as my arm for chores, so I better get my farms done.

Tomorrow I will be gone working a fundraiser at the rest stop.

Be back in a bit to see who was disappointed they did not get first. :)

Goodness gracious...my right eye is blinded by LYNN'S beauty and my left eye has been blinded by DEE DEE's beauty!!

Good morning you lovlies!!

EBJ...I adore those sea lions! I loved to spend time watching them every time I went to SF. Thanks for the blog!

LYNN...glad you got to sleep in. Maybe give MR. LYNN a few of those chores to do? It'll get done a lot faster and then you both can relax together. Good luck tomorrow at the fundraiser.

DEE DEE...old lady smell? Is it similar to tuna? LOL!!

Since SHIRLEY has neglected her duty of feeding us, I guess I will go and make some breakfast...

Lynn D darling....although I am sure my post was many seconds before yours....I am happy to share the number 1 spot with you....I am just like that you know.....if you look up the word generous in the dictionary you'll see my picture....well not so much my picture as a picture of my hoo-haa.....well not so much a picture of anything actually....but half of "first place" today is mine!!

I have been meaning to axe you....do you sleep in your hairnet to help preserve your "do"? I used to wear mine until an unfortunate incident during a dream about a spider...

Well... I have to boogie....I have a birthday party to go to where somebody else gets to be the center of attention and get gifts....yuk...

Maureen...I really don't know what the "old lady smell" is.... Tina started saying that about me almost 3 years ago....maybe something along the line of powdered and perfumed fish??

I'm thinking that perhaps LYNN and DEE DEE should stop bickering about first place and it's beauty and award it to the 11th comment...ijs!

Maureen said...

Ok, so LYNN is whoring, I mean CHOREING and DEE DEE is taming her beauty so as not to steal thunder from the birthday celebrant...where is everyone else today????

It's noon here so I will say g'morining to the West and afternoon to the East :)

I see we have a couple of beauties rolling around in the mud wrestling for 1st lol!

EBJ, That was very interesting about the Sea Lions. I tried to enlarge the vid, but nothing worked. I love live cams!
I saw a few Sea Lions while in Florida a few months ago. I was fascinated by them as well as the stingrays in the Caribbean. Whales are my all time favorite!

It seems to be a busy day for everyone today. I will be heading out also. I will be visiting my brother in the nursing home and just maybe hit the Casino since it is right in my path! I won't be spending much since we leave for Vegas on the 21st. It will be nice to get away from this long ass rainy season!

Diane, I am sending you {{hugs}}. I am glad you didn't get hurt yesterday. I hope your car insurance doesn't go up!

Mo,loved you right eye/left eye comment :)

DeeDee, I can't imagine your not being the center of attraction! Is that even possible???

Lynnd, get busy on them farms so you can work on the list!
