A Shower, A Shit, and A Shave

by Shirley

Let me tell you all a story about my Dad. Remember back in the "old days" when people only took a bath on Saturday night? Yes you do...think!  OK, well that was my Dad. Saturday night like clockwork at 8 he would gather his stuff to go into the bathroom. Now if you were smart you would make sure you ran down stairs and went to the bathroom first, otherwise it would be 2-3 hours before you would be able to get in there.

Dad always said he was going to have a shower, a shit and a shave...HA!HA!HA! (his laugh not mine)...but not in that particular order...HA!HA!HA! (again his laugh not mine). But there was always something I could never understand and he was never able to explain it to me...why did it take an hour to shave his face? I'm sure I have more hair on my two legs than he had on his face and 10 minute, I'm done. Was he plucking them one by one? Measuring them? Counting them? What?

Now before he took his shower he had to cut his toenails...with mum's good sewing scissors of course. Keep in mind that my parents were like oil and water...the only reason they remained together was for us kids ( I would have rather they divorced, but that could be another blog). So mum was not thrilled to learn that Dad was using her sewing scissors to cut his "filthy toenails" with. Although Dad always claimed that anything other than oil and grease was "clean dirt". I would beg to differ with that, cause dog shit on your shoe ain't too clean if you ask me...but who am I to argue with my Dad!

So where was I? Oh yes, he was about to take his bath. Now somewhere between the shaving and toenail cutting I assume the shitting took place. ijs. He would then fill the tub and get in. I know, I said he took a shower, well he did, but it was after he had a bath to "soak all the dirt off him".  Of course he would have to reheat the water 2-3 time during his bath. Mum was usually in the den watching TV but that room shared a wall with the bathroom and I could hear her from upstairs in my room, pounding on the wall and telling him to "hurry up for heaven's sake...someone else might want to use the bathroom you know!!". At this point about 1 1/2 - 2 hours had passed.

Eventually (probably after he got tired of hearing mum) you could hear the shower going and know that within 30-40 minutes he would emerge a clean, shaven and somewhat lighter man. That was his ritual almost every Saturday night. There were exceptions of course and in those instances Sunday morning would be difficult to get into the bathroom.

Do any of you remember things that your parents did or do that you would like to share? Come on now don't be shy!

Good Morning!

SHIRLEY: In the summer my dad would get home from work at 5pm..get his swimsuit on..and go relax in the pool while my mom made dinner. Sometimes he would drink a couple fingers of Drambuie first. He did this from May to the middle of September. If it was after five on a weekday and hot outside..we knew exactly where to find dad. He always asked for Drambuie for his birthday and then would save it for this summer ritual.

After he had taken his 'dip' as he called it..he would come in and shower..put on a pair of Bermuda shorts and a tank top..and sit and watch the news. I just love remembering this image of my dad. He was a very quiet, kind man..and we were happy to see him be able to relax this way.

Thanks for sharing memories of your dad SHIRLEY..as well as helping me relive this one about mine today!

DEEDEE: Love the avatar..so fitting for one as gorgeous as you!

TINA: I have some of those kinds of memories too..lol..

BEBBI: Glad to see you back hootin' and tootin'.. :D

GOLDIE: My dad used so many different sprays in the bathroom, we needed to air it out before we went in!

JODI: I hope you got some sun! If not..I can send you lots and lots..I have extra! ;)

Big step for me today..I'm taking down some of the things my mom put up on the shelves, walls etc. We are in the process of making this house our own. Have a nice day everyone!

Happy Tuesday Owls. I am back from a fun in weekend in San Diego with my youngest, his wife and the fur baby.

Very interesting blog Shirley. My story falls under "things you didn't know were weird until someone else mentions it" category.

Every night at dinner, my Dad would drink either a quart of beer or wine out of a Chianti bottle, which he refilled with a cheap wine he got from Thrifty Drug store. Since I grew up with this 'tradition,' I never gave it a thought until I was in High School. My friends and I were talking about this very subject and one of them said "...and Barb's Dad drinks this big old bottle of beer or wine every night." That comment really took me back. Up to that moment I thought everyone's Dad did that. They didn't know about the homemade Anisette that he put in his coffee every morning. I was sure not everyone's Dad did that!

DeeDee, BAM your loveliness.

Tina, I bet your kids could come up with a story for this blog.

Good morning/afternoon to Bebbi, Goldie, Zona and all the other Owls.

Carol, I also believe that Sal was calling to you and it's good that you answered the call. Even though it will be a difficult memory for you, I'm sure it has or will give you some peace knowing Sal wasn't alone. My prayers are with you and Sal's family. I will also pray that you will find someone who can help you in your business so it won't be so stressful for you.

I don't understand your Dad's shaving habits either, Shirley! My shaving takes about 5 minutes!

And in other news:

1. Zona has a corrupt mind... trust me! :| :) :D

2. New blog up... finally!

Morning Glories!

Deedee you are so beautiful to meeeeee!

Shirley my Dad was an early riser, might be where I get it from. He would get up start the coffee have his first cup then he would turn on the 8 track and put in his Hank Williams tape and sing like crazy! I am not a get up and sing person and it would drive me crazy as my bedroom was next to the kitchen. He would then get his shower.

Then he would wake us up by opening our doors and flip the light switch up and down and yell wakey, wakey. Yuck!

The other thing I remember is that we had the first TV with remote. When he got home that damn remote was glued to his hand. Almost always he would fall asleep with it in a death grip. If you tried to take it or change channels he would wake up instantly and tell you emphatically that he was not asleep just resting his eyes. (Do you see the family collectively rolling their eyes at that remark?)

That was the only time you could wake him up from one of his cat naps.

I do remember one time he fell asleep on the couch with shorts on and I got the idea of connecting the moles on his legs with a marking pen. Hours of entertainment.

He woke up went to the bathroom, wandered back into the living room and was wondering why we were all laughing our asses off. It took a few minutes and then he looked down. One of the few times I heard him use the f word. "What the fuck happened to my legs?" was his response.

Welcome home Sacbarb!

Good to see you Bebbi!

Hi there!

Gorgeous Dee Dee is first today! Congrats!

WB Bebbi! :) Good to see you!

I don't have anything along the lines you mentioned, but my dad is definitely a remote control "hog".

We still laugh to this day about this... he had come out of surgery for his colon cancer. Once they got him to his room and settled, we were allowed to visit.

My mom, brother and I walked in and the tv was on. He was given a PCA pump (a pump that the patient can give themself their own pain medication when needed).

No he didn't have the PCA control in his hand, he had the tv remote! He was sound asleep and when my brother tried to take it from him to put it on the bedside table, he immediately woke up and gripped it tighter.

He has so many "gadgets" hooked up in their family room, and there are about 7 remotes.

One is the surround sound, one is the stereo, etc. Turning on the tv is a challenge.

My dad also says shit, shave, shampoo, and shower.

We are getting ready to vacume the pool today, finally. We both have the day off so can get things done that take 2 of us!

I was looking in the cabinets in the garage this morning, and found boxes and bags of stuff that I have no idea what they are.

When we moved here I guess we just put stuff where it would fit, and then forgot about it.

So I have a project to work on to clear the cabinets. Ugh!

Zona that is a big step, you can't rush that kind of thing, you have to do it when the time is right.

Have a nice day everyone!

Whab...maybe Shirleys Dad was doing a little manscaping.....kwim?

My Father didn't have any remarkable routines....but Mother had one...

As long as I can remember....after lunch and until 3pm was "do not disturb Mother" time.....

Most times it was nap-time.....although she wouldn't admit actual sleeping....she just said she was resting...well actually she said that what she was doing was none of our business..

But for me it never failed....something or things that were pressing would always come up during that time and I HAD to talk to her.....once I had noticed some split ends in my hair and needed to schedule a salon appointment immediately.....she said that if I didn't shut up and get out she would cut my hair personally....she also threatened to snap my neck like a twig once...

I was to full of myself to understand why she shouldn't be at my beckon call....I understand the fabulousness of a nap now...

She repaid me many times over though....I swear that woman had major ESP.....if I wanted her to call all I had to do get in the shower or get right to the edge of an orgasm during sex...and rrrring!! rrrring!!!

Good Afternoon Owls....I just came back from the repair shop to get an estimate on my car and it it $2600. My whole gate on the car has to be replaced. Wow, I was surprised to know this as you can't really tell my looking.

SHIRLEY Fun blog...my dad walked around in his boxers too BEBBI. We only had one bathroom and when my dad went in there to do his business we had to go to the neighbors sometimes to go to the bathroom as he took a book and was in there forever.
When my mom was in there I would follow her in for "her" time whether it be bathroom or bath. We had some of our best talks in there (hmmm, wonder if she thought the same thing).

ZONA: Good for you. It will be nice to have the house be yours and Randys now. Good job.

EBJ: Get that pool ready for some fun times. You are missing the summer!!

DEEDEE: You are so lovely today and I like your avatar...so professional.

GOLDIE: How are you feeling? Is that shoulder working yetZ?

BEBBI: Glad to see you back in full swing....missed you.

LANI: WHERE ARE YOU?

TINA; I would bet aLl of our kids could answer on this blog today...but especially yours!!! :) Well, maybe mine too.

BEAR: I will check out your blog later. Nice to see you today so early.

LYNND: Your dad would have gotten on my nerves flicking that light on and off every morning!! You didn't do that to your kids did you?

JODI: Just take a swig and finish up that wine. Do the kids have summer plans?

BARB: Glad you had a good time with your son and family. Was the weather nice for you? Did you do anything fun? Visiting is sometimes the most fun.

well, off to the doctor for my pre-op appt.

See ya all later

DeeDee Queen of beauty today!

We only had one bathroom for 7 kids and 2 adults. Once we had our Paternal GR Father stay with us. That was horrible! He was "old school" and an old grump from what I remember. He was king when he was with us. He ruled the bathroom for sure! He had to have spent hrs at a time in there. We didn't dare say a word. We just did a lot of dancing lol!
No one walked around in their undies at our house! That would have been a sin! We had to be fully dressed at all times. No sweats, shorts nighties etc. I never saw my Father when he wasn't fully dressed, except when he came to live with me after my Mother died. I am sure he was embarrassed when we had to take care of him.

Welcome back "bubbles"

Had my roots covered today. I know feel pretty :)
I visited a sweet lady friend in ICU today. She is also one of my elderly VFW Aux. members. I was there when they told her of her colon cancer. They also found cancer in many of her organs. I don't think they want to give her Chemo due to her age. Some how during one of their tests they punctured her lung and have air pockets. Now they have to open her back and repair that before sending her home! Even with all that and the pain she still smiled sweetly and told me of some of the cute interns! My kind of gal! I know she won't be getting better, but keep good thoughts for her as she travels her journey where ever that may take her.

SHIRLEY...what a sweet blog! Fun memories of your dad.

I can't remember any of the rituals except a few. My dad always fell asleep with the tv on and as soon as we changed a channel he would pop awake and proclaim he was watching that! Only if he had a tv on the inside of his eyelids!

We had our own ritual on Sunday mornings. Dad would come in and read me the comics as my blue stuffed monkey, Chimpee! Then I would "help" him take his insulin and then we made pancakes.

I also remember my mom would set her hair by rolling pieces around a clothespin, pulling out the pin and bobbie pinning the curl down. She still did that until she cut her hair short, not long before she died.

DIANNE...when is your surgery scheduled?

MARY...your friend sounds amazing. I wish she could talk to Joanne.

TINA...if only to be a fly on the wall in your house!!!

SACBARB... any good news on the job front for your son?

BEBBI...great pic!

Mo, my Mother wrapped her hair around her finger and bobby pinned them in under a hairnet. She also wore her stockings just above her knee where she would either put an elastic band on to hold them up. I was always worried about her blood circulation! Looked painful to ,e lol!
A church lady friend of hers did the same thing only she never shaved her legs and she had dark loooog hair eeeek?

Mary/MI said...

What a sweet blog.. even if does have shit it in I still think its sweet!

So funny how the older generations would only shower once a week.. My dad use to do the same, when I was younger.. I think its because when they were growing up, there where no showers/baths in their flats, so they had to go to the bathhouse and pay, and they can only afford to go once a week..

Now my dad has graduated and showers daily.. he tells me he can afford it now.. lol

This is a great memory of yours.. Great Blog.. thanks for sharing!

Hi..Just came home from an evening with one granddaughter...the youngest. Everyone had plans so I took her to Olive Garden. I haven't been there for a long time and it felt old home week tasting that yummy soup!! School will be out for them on June 22 and she was kind of down tonight. Her sister ended up with a 4.0 average and honor roll (yea!!!) and she just missed it by a couple of points. Her little group of friends were about 50/50 on getting it so she felt bad. We had a good talk about how close she was and how there is next year and how important next year will be for her for her last year in grade school. I am off to their school tomorrow as one is giving her career day speech and the other is doing the was museum like older one did last year.

I thought of you TINA while we were eating at the OG and saw that lemon cake you love. And then I thought of you ZONA on the way home. MrD just bought xm radio for me so I listened to Sinatra all the way home....nice and relaxing.

Talk to you all tomorrow....night

I just hope he doesn't come home sick. It has rained everyday since he left. Sam is spending 10 days in Amboy with LOIS and LANE 2. I'm going back down to pick her up on the 24th. Hello, HOoters. I apologize for not getting here sooner. Probaby no one is even awake to read my post.

DeeDee Congrats on BAM first this morning. You are, and always will be, the fairest in the land.

Shirley Thanks for your blog today. My dad could take 3 showers in the same day, especially during the summer in southern California. He might take one when he first got up in the morning, then take another one after mowing the lawn, then go swimming in the pool and lay in the sun for a while, then take another shower. Dad was kind of a neat freak.

SacBarb Welcome home. I hope you had a nice visit with your son.

Bebbi Glad you are back among the hooters.

Tina Oh, I bet your kids could tell some tales. I wonder if they can be bought. ;)

Goldie I can't imagine you being anything but the life of the party so I bet your sons have tales to tell, too.

Zona I'm glad to here that you are ready to make that house your own home now. As a mom, I know she would want that for you.

Bear I think dad's just use the bathroom as a way to get some alone time and they take full advantage of the opportunity.

LynnD I would have really hated the light flickering maneuver, too. Thankfully, he didn't have a bugle.

Jodi My grandson is only 9 and he keeps hold of the remote control like it controls the universe or something.

EBJ I had been starting to make headway with cleaning stuff out of my garage but now my son has moved a bunch of his stuff in. Crap!

Mary Prays and good wishes for your friend. Oh, and there's nothing quite like the look of dark hair smashed down under a stocking. Eeeeww!

MO My mom used to curl my hair by rolling a section of hair up in a strip of cloth then tying the cloth. I would then have knots of cloth all over my head. LOL It worked, though.

Carol I hope each day is getting a little easier.

Dianne I LOVE that Zuppa Toscana at the Olive Garden. I probably didn't spell it right but now that you reminded me of it, I'm going to be craving it.
